Confluent Second-Order Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and Spectral Design

The confluent second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics, in which the factorization energies tend to a common value, is used to generate Hamiltonians with known spectra departing from the hyperbolic Rosen-Morse and Eckart potentials. The possible spectral modifications, as to create a new level or to delete a given one, as well as the isospectral transformations, are discussed.

Trends in supersymmetric quantum mechanics

Along the years, supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) has been used for studying solvable quantum potentials. It is the simplest method to build Hamiltonians with prescribed spectra in the spectral design. The key is to pair two Hamiltonians through a finite order differential operator. Some related subjects can be simply analyzed, as the algebras ruling both Hamiltonians and the associated coherent states. The technique has been applied also to periodic potentials, where the spectra consist of allowed and forbidden energy bands. In addition, a link with non-linear second order differential equations, and the possibility of generating some solutions, can be explored. Recent applications concern the study of Dirac electrons in graphene placed either in electric or magnetic fields, and the analysis of optical systems whose relevant equations are the same as those of SUSY QM. These issues will be reviewed briefly in this paper, trying to identify the most important subjects explored currently in the literature.

Graphene coherent states

In this paper, we will construct the coherent states for a Dirac electron in graphene placed in a constant homogeneous magnetic field which is orthogonal to the graphene surface. First of all, we will identify the appropriate annihilation and creation operators. Then, we will derive the coherent states as eigenstates of the annihilation operator, with complex eigenvalues. Several physical quantities, as the Heisenberg uncertainty product, probability density and mean energy value, will be as well explored.

The good, the bad and the ugly coherent states through polynomial Heisenberg algebras

Second degree polynomial Heisenberg algebras are realized through the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian, together with two deformed ladder operators chosen as the third powers of the standard annihilation and creation operators. The corresponding solutions to the Painleve IV equation are easily found. Moreover, three different sets of eigenstates of the deformed annihilation operator are constructed, called the good, the bad and the ugly coherent states. Some physical properties of such states will be as well studied.

Complex oscillator and Painlevé IV equation

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics is a powerful tool for generating exactly solvable potentials departing from a given initial one. In this article the first- and second- order supersymmetric transformations will be used to obtain new exactly solvable potentials departing from the complex oscillator. The corresponding Hamiltonians turn out to be ruled by polynomial Heisenberg algebras. By applying a mechanism to reduce to second the order of these algebras, the connection with the Painlevé IV equation is achieved, thus giving place to new solutions for the Painlevé IV equation.

Factorization method and new potentials from the inverted oscillator

In this article we will apply the first- and second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics to obtain new exactly-solvable real potentials departing from the inverted oscillator potential. This system has some special properties; in particular, only very specific second-order transformations produce non-singular real potentials. It will be shown that these transformations turn out to be the so-called complex ones. Moreover, we will study the factorization method applied to the inverted oscillator and the algebraic structure of the new Hamiltonians.

Coherent states for Hamiltonians generated by supersymmetry

Coherent states are derived for one-dimensional systems generated by supersymmetry from an initial Hamiltonian with a purely discrete spectrum for which the levels depend analytically on their subindex. It is shown that the algebra of the initial system is inherited by its SUSY partners in the subspace associated to the isospectral part or the spectrum. The technique is applied to the harmonic oscillator, infinite well and trigonometric Poeschl-Teller potentials.

Solution hierarchies for the Painleve IV equation

In this article we will obtain real and complex solutions to the Painleve IV equation through supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Then we will classify them into real solution hierarchies and also the complex solution hierarchies, which are hardly studied.

Non-hermitian Hamiltonians and Painlevé IV equation with real parameters

In this letter we will use higher-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics to obtain several families of complex solutions of the Painleve IV equation with real parameters. We shall also study the algebraic structure, the eigenfunctions and the energy spectra of the corresponding non-hermitian Hamiltonians.

Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) is a powerful tool for generating new potentials with known spectra departing from an initial solvable one. In these lecture notes we will present some general formulas concerning SUSY QM of first and second order for one-dimensional arbitrary systems, and we will illustrate the method through the trigonometric Poschl-Teller potentials. Some intrinsically related subjects, as the algebraic structure inherited by the new Hamiltonians and the corresponding coherent states will be analyzed. The technique will be as well implemented for periodic potentials, for which the corresponding spectrum is composed of allowed bands separated by energy gaps.

Supersymmetrically transformed periodic potentials

The higher order supersymmetric partners of a stationary periodic potential are studied. The transformation functions associated to the band edges do not change the spectral structure. However, when the transformation is implemented for factorization energies inside of the forbidden bands, the final potential will have again the initial band structure but it can have bound states encrusted into the gaps, giving place to localized periodicity defects.

New hydrogen-like potentials

Using the modified factorization method introduced by Mielnik, we construct a new class of radial potentials whose spectrum for l=0 coincides exactly with that of the hydrogen atom. A limiting case of our family coincides with the potentials previously derived by Abraham and Moses

The manipulation problem in quantum mechanics

We explain the meaning of dynamical manipulation, and we illustrate its mechanism by using a system composed of a charged particle in a Penning trap. It is shown that by means of appropriate electric shocks (delta-like pulses) applied to the trap walls one can induce the squeezing transformation. The geometric phases associated to some cyclic evolutions, induced either by the standard fields of the Penning trap or by the superposition of these plus a rotating magnetic field, are analysed
