Spin Glass and Semiconducting Behavior in 1D BaFe2-δSe3 Crystals

We investigate the physical properties and electronic structure of BaFe2-δSe3 crystals, which were grown out of tellurium flux. The crystal structure of the compound, an iron-deficient derivative of the ThCr2Si2-type, is built upon edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra fused into double chains. The semiconducting BaFe2-δSe3 with δ \approx 0.2 (ρ295K = 0.18 Ω\cdotcm and Eg = 0.30 eV) does not order magnetically, however there is evidence for short-range magnetic correlations of spin glass type (Tf \approx 50 K) in magnetization, heat capacity and neutron diffraction results. A one-third substitution of selenium with sulfur leads to a slightly higher electrical conductivity (ρ295K = 0.11 Ω\cdotcm and Eg = 0.22 eV) and a lower spin glass freezing temperature (Tf \approx 15 K), corroborating with higher electrical conductivity reported for BaFe2S3. According to the electronic structure calculations, BaFe2Se3 can be considered as a one-dimensional ladder structure with a weak interchain coupling.

Design of a low band gap oxide ferroelectric: Bi$_6$Ti$_4$O$_{17}$

A strategy for obtaining low band gap oxide ferroelectrics based on charge imbalance is described and illustrated by first principles studies of the hypothetical compound Bi$_6$Ti$_4$O$_{17}$, which is an alternate stacking of the ferroelectric Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$. We find that this compound is ferroelectric, similar to Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$ although with a reduced polarization. Importantly, calculations of the electronic structure with the recently developed functional of Tran and Blaha yield a much reduced band gap of 1.83 eV for this material compared to Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$. Therefore, Bi$_6$Ti$_4$O$_{17}$ is predicted to be a low band gap ferroelectric material.

Control of Correlations in Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 by Chemical Stoichiometry

We show using a combination of powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, first principles calculations, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, heat capacity and resistivity data that the superconducting behavior of `Sr$_4$V$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$As$_2$' is dependent on synthesis conditions, particularly, heating profiles result in unintentional chemical doping. This compound can be tuned from a state in which the vanadium electrons are itinerant with a high electronic density of states, to a state where the vanadium-oxide layers are insulating and presumably antiferromagnetic.

Electronic Structure Calculations with the Tran-Blaha Modified Becke-Johnson Density Functional

We report a series of calculations testing the predictions of the Tran-Blaha functional for the electronic structure and magnetic properties of condensed systems. We find a general improvement in the properties of semiconducting and insulating systems, relative to calculations with standard generalized gradient approximations, although this is not always by the same mechanism as other approaches such as the quasiparticle GW method. In ZnO the valence bands are narrowed and the band gap is increased to a value in much better agreement with experiment. The Zn $d$ states do not move to higher binding energy as they do in LDA+U calculations. The functional is effective for systems with hydride anions, where correcting self-interaction errors in the 1$s$ state is important. Similarly, it correctly opens semiconducting gaps in the alkaline earth hexaborides. It correctly stabilizes an antiferromagnetic insulating ground state for the undoped cuprate parent CaCuO$_2$, but seriously degrades the agreement with experiment for ferromagnetic Gd relative to the standard local spin density approximation and generalized gradient approximations. This is due to positioning of the minority spin $4f$ states at too low an energy. Conversly, the position of the La $4f$ conduction bands of La$_2$O$_3$ is in reasonable accord with experiment as it is with standard functionals. The functional narrows the Fe $d$ bands of the parent compound LaFeAsO of the iron high temperature superconductors, while maintaining the high Fe spectral weight near the Fermi energy.

Structure and optical properties of high light output halide scintillators

Structural and optical properties of several high light output halide scintillators and closely related materials are presented based on first principles calculations. The optical properties are based on the Engel-Vosko generalized gradient approximation and the recently developed density functional of Tran and Blaha. The materials investigated are BaBr$_2$, BaIBr, BaCl$_2$, BaF$_2$, BaI$_2$, BiI$_3$, CaI$_2$, Cs$_2LiYCl$_6$, CsBa$_2$Br$_5$, CsBa$_2$I$_5$, K$_2$LaBr$_5$, K$_2$LaCl$_5$,K$_2$LaI$_5$, LaBr$_3$, LaCl$_3$, SrBr$_2$, and YI$_3$. For comparison results are presented for the oxide CdWO$_4$. We find that the Tran Blaha functional gives greatly improved band gaps and optical properties in this class of materials. Furthermore, we find that unlike CdWO$_4$, most of these halides are highly isotropic from an optical point of view even though in many cases the crystal structures and other properties are not. This general result is rationalized in terms of halide chemistry. Implications for the development of ceramic halide scintillators are discussed.

Suppression of spin density wave by isoelectronic substitution in PrFe(1-x)Ru(x)AsO

We have studied the effects of the isoelectronic substitution of Ru for Fe in polycrystalline samples of the spin density wave (SDW) material PrFeAsO. Crystal structures from powder x-ray diffraction at room temperature and transport properties from 2-300 K are reported. The SDW is completely suppressed upon Ru substitution. The distortion of the tetrahedral coordination environment of the transition metal site increases as the Ru concentration increases, which may be related to the absence of superconductivity above 2 K. Band structure calculations show that the larger size of Ru 4$d$ orbitals is primarily responsible for the suppression of magnetism as Ru is substituted into the Fe layer. The experimental results indicate that long-ranged magnetic order of Pr moments is suppressed at Ru concentrations as low as 10%.

Hole-doped BaFe2-xCrxAs2 Crystals: A Case of Non-superconductivity

We investigate the physical properties and electronic structure upon Cr-doping in the iron arsenide layers of BaFe2As2. This form of hole-doping leads to suppression of the magnetic/structural phase transition in BaFe2-xCrxAs2 for x > 0, but does not lead to superconductivity. For various x values, temperature dependence of the resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, Hall coefficient, and single crystal x-ray diffraction data are presented. The materials show signatures of approaching a ferromagnetic state with x, including a metamagnetic transition for x as little as 0.36, an enhanced magnetic susceptibility, and a large Sommerfeld coefficient. Such results reflect renormalization due to spin fluctuations and they are supported by density functional calculations at x = 1. Calculations show a strong interplay between magnetic ordering and chemical ordering of Fe and Cr, with a ferromagnetic ground state. This ferromagnetic ground state is explained in terms of the electronic structure. The resulting phase diagram is suggestive that superconductivity does not derive simply from the suppression of the structural/magnetic transitions.

BaT2As2 Single Crystals (T = Fe, Co, Ni) and Superconductivity upon Co-doping

The crystal structure and physical properties of BaFe2As2, BaCo2As2, and BaNi2As2 single crystals are surveyed. BaFe2As2 gives a magnetic and structural transition at TN = 132(1) K, BaCo2As2 is a paramagnetic metal, while BaNi2As2 has a structural phase transition at T0 = 131 K, followed by superconductivity below Tc = 0.69 K. The bulk superconductivity in Co-doped BaFe2As2 below Tc = 22 K is demonstrated by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat data. In contrast to the cuprates, the Fe-based system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the transition metal layers. First principles calculations for BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 indicate the inter-band scattering due to Co is weak.

Density functional study of BaNi$_2$As$_2$: Electronic structure, phonons and electron-phonon superconductivity

We investigate the properties of BaNi$_2$As$_2$ using first principles calculations. The band structure has a similar shape to that of the BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and in particular shows a pseudogap between a manifold of six heavy $d$ electron bands and four lighter $d$ bands, i.e. at an electron count of six $d$ electrons per Ni. However, unlike BaFe$_2$As$_2$, where the Fermi energy occurs at the bottom of the pseudogap, the two additional electrons per Ni in the Ni compound place the Fermi energy in the upper manifold. Thus BaNi$_2$As$_2$ has large Fermi surfaces very distinct from BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Results for the phonon spectrum and electron-phonon coupling are consistent with a classification of this material as a conventional phonon mediated superconductor although spin fluctuations and nearness to magnetism may be anticipated based on the value of $N(E_F)$.

Density functional study of FeS, FeSe and FeTe: Electronic structure, magnetism, phonons and superconductivity

We report density functional calculations of the electronic structure, Fermi surface, phonon spectrum, magnetism and electron-phonon coupling for the superconducting phase FeSe, as well as the related compounds FeS and FeTe. We find that the Fermi surface structure of these compounds is very similar to that of the Fe-As based superconductors, with cylindrical electron sections at the zone corner, cylindrical hole surface sections, and depending on the compound, other small hole sections at the zone center. As in the Fe-As based materials, these surfaces are separated by a 2D nesting vector at ($π$,$π$). The density of states, nesting and Fermi surface size increase going from FeSe to FeTe. Both FeSe and FeTe show spin density wave ground states, while FeS is close to an instability. In a scenario where superconductivity is mediated by spin fluctuations at the SDW nesting vector, the strongest superconductor in this series would be doped FeTe.

Superconductivity at 22 K in Co-doped BaFe2As2 Crystals

Here we report bulk superconductivity in BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 single crystals below Tc = 22 K, as demonstrated by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat data. Hall data indicate that the dominant carriers are electrons, as expected from simple chemical reasoning. This is the first example of superconductivity induced by electron doping in this family of materials. In contrast to the cuprates, the BaFe2As2 system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the FeAs planes. First principles calculations for BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 indicate the inter-band scattering due to Co is weak.

Ab Initio Phonon Dispersions for PbTe

We report first principles calculations of the phonon dispersions of PbTe both for its observed structure and under compression. At the experimental lattice parameter we find a near instability of the optic branch at the zone center, in accord with experimental observations. This hardens quickly towards the zone boundary. There is also a very strong volume dependence of this mode, which is rapidly driven away from an instability by compression. These results are discussed inrelation to the thermal conductivity of the material.

BoltzTraP. A code for calculating band-structure dependent quantities

A program for calculating the semi-classic transport coefficients is described. It is based on a smoothed Fourier interpolation of the bands. From this analytical representation we calculate the derivatives necessary for the transport distributions. The method is compared to earlier calculations, which in principle should be exact within Boltzmann theory, and a very convincing agreement is found.

Prediction of Room Temperature High Thermoelectric Performance in n-type La(Ru,Rh)4Sb12

First principles calculations are used to investigate the band structure and the transport related properties of unfilled and filled 4d skutterudite antimonides. The calculations show that, while RhSb3 and p-type La(Rh,Ru)4Sb12 are unfavorable for thermoelectric application, n-type La(Rh,Ru)4Sb12 is very likely a high figure of merit thermoelectric material in the important temperature range 150-300 K.

Theory of angular magnetoresistance oscillations in Tl2Ba2CuO6

Using the calculated electron energy band structure of Tl2Ba2CuO6, we compute the dependence of the c axis magnetoresistance on the orientation of the magnetic field for different magnitudes of the magnetic field. We explain the known experimental results for the in-plane rotation of the magnetic field and predict the shape of the magnetoresistance oscillations for the out-of-plane rotations of the magnetic field. We show how the latter oscillations can be utilized to reconstruct the shape of the Fermi surface and to study the coherence of inter-plane electron tunneling.

Electronic Structure and Thermoelectric Prospects of Phosphide Skutterudites

The prospects for high thermoelectric performance in phosphide skutterudites are investigated based on first principles calculations. We find that stoichiometric CoP_3 differs from the corresponding arsenide and antimonide in that it is metallic. As such the band structure must be modified if high thermopowers are to be achieved. In analogy to the antimonides it is expected that this may be done by filling with La. Calculations for LaFe_4P_12 show that a gap can in fact be opened by La filling, but that the valence band is too light to yield reasonable p-type thermopowers at appropriate carrier densities; n-type La filled material may be more favorable.
