Structure of Stochastic Dynamics near Fixed Points

We analyze the structure of stochastic dynamics near either a stable or unstable fixed point, where force can be approximated by linearization. We find that a cost function that determines a Boltzmann-like stationary distribution can always be defined near it. Such a stationary distribution does not need to satisfy the usual detailed balance condition, but might have instead a divergence-free probability current. In the linear case the force can be split into two parts, one of which gives detailed balance with the diffusive motion, while the other induces cyclic motion on surfaces of constant cost function. Using the Jordan transformation for the force matrix, we find an explicit construction of the cost function. We discuss singularities of the transformation and their consequences for the stationary distribution. This Boltzmann-like distribution may be not unique, and nonlinear effects and boundary conditions may change the distribution and induce additional currents even in the neighborhood of a fixed point.

Width-amplitude relation of Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal solitary waves

Inequality width-amplitude relations for three-dimensional Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal solitary waves are derived for magnetized plasmas. Criteria for neglecting effects of nonzero cyclotron radius are obtained. We emphasize that the form of the solitary potential is not tightly constrained, and the amplitude and widths of the potential are constrained by inequalities. The existence of a continuous range of allowed sizes and shapes for these waves makes them easily accessible. We propose that these solitary waves can be spontaneously generated in turbulence or thermal fluctuations. We expect that the high excitation probability of these waves should alter the bulk properties of the plasma medium such as electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity.

Pairing Instability and Mechanical Collapse of a Bose Gas with an Attractive Interaction

We study the pairing instability and mechanical collapse of a dilute homogeneous bose gas with an attractive interaction. The pairing phase is found to be a saddle point, unstable against pairing fluctuations. This pairing saddle point exists above a critical temperature. Below this critical temperature, the system is totally unstable in the pairing channel. Thus the system could collapse in the pairing channel in addition to mechanical collapse. The critical temperatures of pairing instability and mechanical collapse are higher than the BEC temperature of an ideal bose gas with the same density. When fluctuations are taken into account, we find that the critical temperature of mechanical collapse is even higher. The difference between the collapse temperature and the BEC temperature is proportional to $(n|a_s|^3)^{2/9}$, where $n$ is the density and $a_s$ is the scattering length.

Iordanskii and Lifshitz-Pitaevskii Forces in the Two-Fluid Model

It has been known since the pioneering work of Onsager and Feynman that the statistical mechanics and dynamics of vortices play an essential role in the behavior of superfluids and superconductors. However, the theory of vortices in quantum fluids remains in a most unsatisfactory state, with many conflicting results in the literature. In this paper we review the theory of Thouless, Ao and Niu, which gives an expression for the total transverse force acting on a quantized vortex that is in apparent disagreement with the work of Iordanskii and of Lifshitz and Pitaevskii. In particular, no transverse force proportional to the asymptotic normal fluid velocity was found. We use two-fluid hydrodynamics to study this discrepancy.

Transverse force on a quantized vortex in a superconductor

The total transverse force acting on a quantized vortex in a type-II superconductor determines the Hall response in the mixed state, yet a consensus as to its correct form is still lacking. In this paper we present an essentially exact expression for this force, valid in the superclean limit, which was obtained by generalizing the recent work by Thouless, Ao, and Niu [D. J. Thouless, P. Ao, and Q. Niu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 3758 (1996)] on the Magnus force in a neutral superfluid. We find the transverse force per unit length to be $f = ρK \times V$, where $ρ= ρ_{n} + ρ_{s}$ is the sum of the mass densities of the normal and superconducting components, $K$ is a vector parallel to the line vortex with a magnitude equal to the quantized circulation, and $V$ is the vortex velocity.

Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation for Superconductors

Using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov factorization of the density matrix and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation we show that the motion of the condensate satisfies a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the zero temperature limit. The Galilean invariance of the equation is explicitly manifested. {}From this equation some general properties of a superconductor, such as Josephson effects, the Magnus force, and the Bogoliubov-Anderson mode can be obtained readily.

Tunneling of a Quantized Vortex: Roles of Pinning and Dissipation

We have performed a theoretical study of the effects of pinning potential and dissipation on vortex tunneling in superconductors. Analytical results are obtained in various limits relevant to experiment. In general we have found that pinning and dissipation tend to suppress the effect of the vortex velocity dependent part of the Magnus force on vortex tunneling.
