Information geometry for types in the large-$n$ limit of random matrices

We study the interaction between entropy and Wasserstein distance in free probability theory. In particular, we give lower bounds for several versions of free entropy dimension along Wasserstein geodesics, as well as study their topological properties with respect to Wasserstein distance. We also study moment measures in the multivariate free setting, showing the existence and uniqueness of solutions for a regularized version of Santambrogio's variational problem. The role of probability distributions in these results is played by types, functionals which assign values not only to polynomial test functions, but to all real-valued logical formulas built from them using suprema and infima. We give an explicit counterexample showing that in the framework of non-commutative laws, the usual notion of probability distributions using only non-commutative polynomial test functions, one cannot obtain the desired large-$n$ limiting behavior for both Wasserstein distance and entropy simultaneously in random multi-matrix models.

Quantum Expanders and Quantifier Reduction for Tracial von Neumann Algebras

We provide a complete characterization of theories of tracial von Neumann algebras that admit quantifier elimination. We also show that the theory of a separable tracial von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{N}$ is never model complete if its direct integral decomposition contains $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors $\mathcal{M}$ such that $M_2(\mathcal{M})$ embeds into an ultrapower of $\mathcal{M}$. The proof in the case of $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors uses an explicit construction based on random matrices and quantum expanders.

Elementary equivalence and disintegration of tracial von Neumann algebras

We prove an analog of the disintegration theorem for tracial von Neumann algebras in the setting of elementary equivalence rather than isomorphism, showing that elementary equivalence of two direct integrals implies fiberwise elementary equivalence under mild, and necessary, hypotheses. This verifies a conjecture of Farah and Ghasemi. Our argument uses a continuous analog of ultraproducts where an ultrafilter on a discrete index set is replaced by a character on a commutative von Neumann algebra, which is closely related to Keisler randomizations of metric structures. We extend several essential results on ultraproducts, such as Łoś's theorem and countable saturation, to this more general setting.

Viscosity Solutions in Non-commutative Variables

Motivated by parallels between mean field games and random matrix theory, we develop stochastic optimal control problems and viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations in the setting of non-commutative variables. Rather than real vectors, the inputs to the equation are tuples of self-adjoint operators from a tracial von Neumann algebra. The individual noise from mean field games is replaced by a free semi-circular Brownian motion, which describes the large-$n$ limit of Brownian motion on the space of self-adjoint matrices. We introduce a classical common noise from mean field games into the non-commutative setting as well, allowing the problems to combine both classical and non-commutative randomness.

Combinatorial aspects of Parraud's asymptotic expansion for GUE matrices

We give a new combinatorial proof of Parraud's formula for the asymptotic expansion in powers of $1/N^2$ for the expected trace of polynomials of several independent $N \times N$ GUE matrices, which expresses the result using a mixture of free difference quotients, introducing new freely independent semicircular variables, and integration with respect to parameters. Our approach streamlines the statement of the formula while clarifying its relationship to the combinatorial genus expansion.

General solidity phenomena and anticoarse spaces for type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factors

By developing a theory of anticoarse spaces in the purely infinite setting and using 1-bounded entropy techniques along with recent strong convergence results in random matrix theory, we show that free Araki--Woods factors offer the first examples of type $\mathrm{III}$ factors satisfying vastly general degrees of indecomposability phenomena. Notably this includes strong solidity with respect to any weakening of the normalizer currently in the literature and the Peterson--Thom property.

Random permutation matrix models for graph products

Graph independence (also known as $ε$-independence or $λ$-independence) is a mixture of classical independence and free independence corresponding to graph products or groups and operator algebras. Using conjugation by certain random permutation matrices, we construct random matrix models for graph independence with amalgamation over the diagonal matrices. This yields a new probabilist,ic proof that graph products of sofic groups are sofic.

Consequences of the random matrix solution to the Peterson-Thom conjecture

In this paper we show various new structural properties of free group factors using the recent resolution (due independently to Belinschi-Capitaine and Bordenave-Collins) of the Peterson-Thom conjecture. These results include the resolution to the coarseness conjecture independently due to the first-named author and Popa, a generalization of Ozawa-Popa's celebrated strong solidity result using vastly more general versions of the normalizer (and in an ultraproduct setting), a dichotomy result for intertwining of maximal amenable subalgebras of interpolated free group factors, as well as application to ultraproduct embeddings of nonamenable subalgebras of interpolated free group factors.

On the structure of graph product von Neumann algebras

We undertake a comprehensive study of structural properties of graph products of von Neumann algebras equipped with faithful, normal states, as well as properties of the graph products relative to subalgebras coming from induced subgraphs. Among the technical contributions in this paper include a complete bimodule calculation for subalgebras arising from subgraphs. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of when two subalgebras coming from induced subgraphs can be amenable relative to each other. We also give complete characterizations of when the graph product can be full, diffuse, or a factor. Our results are obtained in a broad generality, and we emphasize that they are new even in the tracial setting. They also allow us to deduce new results about when graph products of groups can be amenable relative to each other.

Strong 1-boundedness, $L^2$-Betti numbers, algebraic soficity, and graph products

We show that graph products of non trivial finite dimensional von Neumann algebras are strongly 1-bounded when the underlying *-algebra has vanishing first L2-Betti number. The proof uses a combination of the following two key ideas to obtain lower bounds on the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of matrix polynomials in a generating set: a notion called ''algebraic soficity'' for *-algebras allowing for the existence of Galois bounded microstates with asymptotically constant diagonals; a probabilistic construction of the authors of permutation models for graph independence over the diagonal.

An Elementary Proof of the Inequality $χ\leq χ^*$ for Conditional Free Entropy

Through the study of large deviations theory for matrix Brownian motion, Biane-Capitaine-Guionnet proved the inequality $χ(X) \leq χ^*(X)$ that relates two analogs of entropy in free probability defined by Voiculescu. We give a new proof of $χ\leq χ^*$ that is elementary in the sense that it does not rely on stochastic differential equations and large deviation theory. Moreover, we generalize the result to conditional microstates and non-microstates free entropy.

Optimal transport for types and convex analysis for definable predicates in tracial $\mathrm{W}^*$-algebras

We investigate the connections between continuous model theory, free probability, and optimal transport/convex analysis in the context of tracial von Neumann algebras. In particular, we give an analog of Monge-Kantorovich duality for optimal couplings where the role of probability distributions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ is played by model-theoretic types, the role of real-valued continuous functions is played by definable predicates, and the role of continuous function $\mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}^n$ is played by definable functions. In the process, we also advance the understanding of definable predicates and definable functions by showing that all definable predicates can be approximated by "$C^1$ definable predicates" whose gradients are definable functions. As a consequence, we show that every element in the definable closure of $\mathrm{W}^*(x_1,\dots,x_n)$ can be expressed as a definable function of $(x_1,\dots,x_n)$. We give several classes of examples showing that the definable closure can be much larger than $\mathrm{W}^*(x_1,\dots,x_n)$ in general.

Vanishing first cohomology and strong 1-boundedness for von Neumann algebras

In this paper, we obtain a new proof result of Shlyakhtenko which states that if $G$ is a sofic, finitely presented group with vanishing first $\ell^2$-Betti number, then $L(G)$ is strongly 1-bounded. Our proof of this result adapts and simplifies Jung's technical arguments which showed strong 1-boundedness under certain conditions on the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of the matrix capturing the relations. Our proof also features a key idea due to Jung which involves an iterative estimate for the covering numbers of microstate spaces. We also provide a short proof using works of Shlyakhtenko and Shalom that the von Neumann algebras of sofic groups with Property T are strongly 1 bounded, which is a special case of another result by the authors.

Covering entropy for types in tracial $\mathrm{W}^*$-algebras

We study embeddings of tracial $\mathrm{W}^*$-algebras into a ultraproduct of matrix algebras through an amalgamation of free probabilistic and model-theoretic techniques. Jung implicitly and Hayes explicitly defined $1$-bounded entropy through the asymptotic covering numbers of Voiculescu's microstate spaces, that is, spaces of matrix tuples $(X_1^{(N)},X_2^{(N)},\dots)$ having approximately the same $*$-moments as the generators $(X_1,X_2,\dots)$ of a given tracial $\mathrm{W}^*$-algebra. We study the analogous covering entropy for microstate spaces defined through formulas that use not only $*$-algebra operations and the trace, but also suprema and infima, such as arise in the model theory of tracial $\mathrm{W}^*$-algebras initiated by Farah, Hart, and Sherman. By relating the new theory with the original $1$-bounded entropy, we show that if $h(\mathcal{N}:\mathcal{M}) \geq 0$, then there exists an embedding of $\mathcal{M}$ into a matrix ultraproduct $\mathcal{Q} = \prod_{n \to \mathcal{U}} M_n(\mathbb{C})$ such that $h(\mathcal{N}:\mathcal{Q})$ is arbitrarily close to $h(\mathcal{N}:\mathcal{M})$. We deduce if all embeddings of $\mathcal{M}$ into $\mathcal{Q}$ are automorphically equivalent, then $\mathcal{M}$ is strongly $1$-bounded and in fact has $h(\mathcal{M}) \leq 0$.

Uniformly Super McDuff II$_1$ Factors

We introduce and study the family of uniformly super McDuff II$_1$ factors. This family is shown to be closed under elementary equivalence and also coincides with the family of II$_1$ factors with the Brown property introduced in arXiv:2004.02293. We show that a certain family of existentially closed factors, the so-called infinitely generic factors, are uniformly super McDuff, thereby improving a recent result of arXiv:2205.07442. We also show that Popa's family of strongly McDuff II$_1$ factors are uniformly super McDuff. Lastly, we investigate when finitely generic II$_1$ factors are uniformly super McDuff.

Free probability and model theory of tracial $\mathrm{W}^*$-algebras

The notion of a $*$-law or $*$-distribution in free probability is also known as the quantifier-free type in Farah, Hart, and Sherman's model theoretic framework for tracial von Neumann algebras. However, the full type can also be considered an analog of a classical probability distribution (indeed, Ben Yaacov showed that in the classical setting, atomless probability spaces admit quantifier elimination and hence there is no difference between the full type and the quantifier-free type). We therefore develop a notion of Voiculescu's free microstates entropy for a full type, and we show that if $\mathbf{X}$ is a $d$-tuple in $\mathcal{M}$ with $χ^{\mathcal{U}}(\mathbf{X}:\mathcal{M}) > -\infty$ for a given ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$, then there exists an embedding $ι$ of $\mathcal{M}$ into $\mathcal{Q} = \prod_{n \to \mathcal{U}} M_n(\mathbb{C})$ with $χ(ι(\mathbf{X}): \mathcal{Q}) = χ(\mathbf{X}:\mathcal{M})$; in particular, such an embedding will satisfy $ι(\mathbf{X})' \cap \mathcal{Q} = \mathbb{C}$ by the results of Voiculescu. Furthermore, we sketch some open problems and challenges for developing model-theoretic versions of free independence and free Gibbs laws.

Duality for optimal couplings in free probability

We study the free probabilistic analog of optimal couplings for the quadratic cost, where classical probability spaces are replaced by tracial von Neumann algebras, and probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^m$ are replaced by non-commutative laws of $m$-tuples. We prove an analog of the Monge-Kantorovich duality which characterizes optimal couplings of non-commutative laws with respect to Biane and Voiculescu's non-commutative $L^2$-Wasserstein distance using a new type of convex functions. As a consequence, we show that if $(X,Y)$ is a pair of optimally coupled $m$-tuples of non-commutative random variables in a tracial $\mathrm{W}^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, then $\mathrm{W}^*((1 - t)X + tY) = \mathrm{W}^*(X,Y)$ for all $t \in (0,1)$. Finally, we illustrate the subtleties of non-commutative optimal couplings through connections with results in quantum information theory and operator algebras. For instance, two non-commutative laws that can be realized in finite-dimensional algebras may still require an infinite-dimensional algebra to optimally couple. Moreover, the space of non-commutative laws of $m$-tuples is not separable with respect to the Wasserstein distance for $m > 1$.

Tracial smooth functions of non-commuting variables and the free Wasserstein manifold

We formulate a free probabilistic analog of the Wasserstein manifold on $\mathbb{R}^d$ (the formal Riemannian manifold of smooth probability densities on $\mathbb{R}^d$), and we use it to study smooth non-commutative transport of measure. The points of the free Wasserstein manifold $\mathscr{W}(\mathbb{R}^{*d})$ are smooth tracial non-commutative functions $V$ with quadratic growth at $\infty$, which correspond to minus the log-density in the classical setting. The space of smooth tracial non-commutative functions used here is a new one whose definition and basic properties we develop in the paper; they are scalar-valued functions of self-adjoint $d$-tuples from arbitrary tracial von Neumann algebras that can be approximated by trace polynomials. The space of non-commutative diffeomorphisms $\mathscr{D}(\mathbb{R}^{*d})$ acts on $\mathscr{W}(\mathbb{R}^{*d})$ by transport, and the basic relationship between tangent vectors for $\mathscr{D}(\mathbb{R}^{*d})$ and tangent vectors for $\mathscr{W}(\mathbb{R}^{*d})$ is described using the Laplacian $L_V$ associated to $V$ and its pseudo-inverse $Ψ_V$ (when defined). Following similar arguments to arXiv:1204.2182, arXiv:1701.00132, and arXiv:1906.10051 in the new setting, we give a rigorous proof for the existence of smooth transport along any path $t \mapsto V_t$ when $V$ is sufficiently close $(1/2) \sum_j \operatorname{tr}(x_j^2)$, as well as smooth triangular transport.
