Quantum computation via measurements on the low-temperature state of a many-body system

We consider measurement-based quantum computation using the state of a spin-lattice system in equilibrium with a thermal bath and free to evolve under its own Hamiltonian. Any single qubit measurements disturb the system from equilibrium and, with adaptive measurements performed at a finite rate, the resulting dynamics reduces the fidelity of the computation. We show that it is possible to describe the loss in fidelity by a single quantum operation on the encoded quantum state that is independent of the measurement history. To achieve this simple description, we choose a particular form of spin-boson coupling to describe the interaction with the environment, and perform measurements periodically at a natural rate determined by the energy gap of the system. We found that an optimal cooling exists, which is a trade-off between keeping the system cool enough that the resource state remains close to the ground state, but also isolated enough that the cooling does not strongly interfere with the dynamics of the computation. For a sufficiently low temperature we obtain a fault-tolerant threshold for the couplings to the environment.

Comment on `Quantum resolution to the arrow of time dilemma'

Recently, a substantial amount of debate has grown up around a proposed quantum resolution to the `arrow of time dilemma' that is based on the role of classical memory records of entropy-decreasing events. In this note we show that the argument is incomplete and furthermore, by providing a counter-example, argue that it is incorrect. Instead of quantum mechanics providing a resolution in the manner suggested, it allows enhanced classical memory records of entropy-decreasing events.

Kaluza-Klein reduction for the Unruh brane

We present a Kaluza-Klein reduction for the Unruh response that a brane, in an AdS bulk would experience due to its acceleration. The Unruh radiation is realised as particle production on the brane for each of the Kaluza-Klein modes. A correction, coming from the massive modes, is calculated for the standard Unruh effect in Minkowski spacetime and it is found that the response coming from these modes is exponentially suppressed.

The brane universe as an Unruh observer

We make the observation that a brane universe accelerates through its bulk spacetime, and so may be interpreted as an Unruh observer. The bulk vacuum is perceived to be a thermal bath that heats matter fields on the brane. It is shown that, aside from being relevant in the early universe, an asymptotic temperature exists for the brane universe corresponding to late time thermal equilibrium with the bulk. In the simplest case two possible equilibrium points exist, one at the Gibbons-Hawking temperature for an asymptotic de Sitter universe embedded in an Anti-de Sitter bulk and another with a non-zero density on the brane universe. We calculate various limiting cases of Wightman functions in N-dimensional AdS spacetime and show explicitly that the Unruh effect only occurs for accelerations above the mass scale of the spacetime. The thermal excitations are found to be modified by both the curvature of the bulk and by its dimension. It is found that a scalar field can appear like a fermion in odd dimensions. We analyse the excitations in terms of vacuum fluctuations and back reactions and find that the Unruh effect stems solely from the vacuum fluctuations in even dimensions and from the back reactions in odd dimensions.

Graviton Emission into Non-Z_2 Symmetric Brane World Spacetimes

The equations for the evolution of a homogeneous brane world that emits gravitons at early times, and into a non-Z_2 symmetric bulk, are derived using an AdS-Vaidya spacetime approximation. The behaviour of the black hole mass parameters either side of the brane is analysed, and it is found that in general graviton emission leads to a decrease in the non-Z_2 symmetry. However, the behaviour of the dark radiation term in the Friedmann equation is more complex: it is shown that this term can increase or decrease due to the non-Z_2 symmetry, and can become negative in some cases, leading to H=0 and the brane universe collapsing. Constraints on the initial (nonzero) sizes of the mass parameters are therefore derived.

Bulk black holes radiating in non-Z_2 brane-world spacetimes

In this paper we present a general asymmetric brane model involving arbitrary energy transport to and from an embedded 4-D FRW universe. We derive a locally defined mass function for the 5D spacetime and describe its time evolution on the brane. We then specialise our model to the two cases of graviton production in the early universe and radiating black holes in the bulk.
