Orbit equivalence and sofic approximation

Given an ergodic probability measure preserving dynamical system $\G\acts (X,μ)$, where $\G$ is a finitely generated countable group, we show that the asymptotic growth of the number of finite models for the dynamics, in the sense of sofic approximations, is an invariant of orbit equivalence. We then prove an additivity formula for free products with amenable (possibly trivial) amalgamation. In particular, we obtain purely combinatorial proofs of several results in orbit equivalence theory.

Sofic measure entropy via finite partitions

We give a generator-free formulation of sofic measure entropy using finite partitions and establish a Kolmogorov-Sinai theorem. We also show how to compute the values for general Bernoulli actions in a concise way using the arguments of Bowen in the finite base case.

Residually finite actions and crossed products

We study a notion of residual finiteness for continuous actions of discrete groups on compact Hausdorff spaces and how it relates to the existence of norm microstates for the reduced crossed product. Our main result asserts that an action of a free group on a zero-dimensional compact metrizable space is residually finite if and only if its reduced crossed product admits norm microstates, i.e., is an MF algebra.

Entropy and the variational principle for actions of sofic groups

Recently Lewis Bowen introduced a notion of entropy for measure-preserving actions of a countable sofic group on a standard probability space admitting a generating partition with finite entropy. By applying an operator algebra perspective we develop a more general approach to sofic entropy which produces both measure and topological dynamical invariants, and we establish the variational principle in this context. In the case of residually finite groups we use the variational principle to compute the topological entropy of principal algebraic actions whose defining group ring element is invertible in the full group C*-algebra.

Soficity, amenability, and dynamical entropy

In a previous paper the authors developed an operator-algebraic approach to Lewis Bowen's sofic measure entropy that yields invariants for actions of countable sofic groups by homeomorphisms on a compact metrizable space and by measure-preserving transformations on a standard probability space. We show here that these measure and topological entropy invariants both coincide with their classical counterparts when the acting group is amenable.

Bernoulli actions and infinite entropy

We show that, for countable sofic groups, a Bernoulli action with infinite entropy base has infinite entropy with respect to every sofic approximation sequence. This builds on the work of Lewis Bowen in the case of finite entropy base and completes the computation of measure entropy for Bernoulli actions over countable sofic groups. One consequence is that such a Bernoulli action fails to have a generating countable partition with finite entropy if the base has infinite entropy, which in the amenable case is well known and in the case that the acting group contains the free group on two generators was established by Bowen using a different argument.

Turbulence, representations, and trace-preserving actions

We establish criteria for turbulence in certain spaces of C*-algebra representations and apply this to the problem of nonclassifiability by countable structures for group actions on a standard atomless probability space (X,μ) and on the hyperfinite II_1 factor R. We also prove that the conjugacy action on the space of free actions of a countably infinite amenable group on R is turbulent, and that the conjugacy action on the space of ergodic measure-preserving flows on (X,μ) is generically turbulent.

Combinatorial independence in measurable dynamics

We develop a fine-scale local analysis of measure entropy and measure sequence entropy based on combinatorial independence. The concepts of measure IE-tuples and measure IN-tuples are introduced and studied in analogy with their counterparts in topological dynamics. Local characterizations of the Pinsker von Neumann algebra and its sequence entropy analogue are given in terms of combinatorial independence, l_1 geometry, and Voiculescu's completely positive approximation entropy. Among the novel features of our local study is the treatment of general discrete acting groups, with the structural assumption of amenability in the case of entropy.

Independence in topological and C*-dynamics

We develop a systematic approach to the study of independence in topological dynamics with an emphasis on combinatorial methods. One of our principal aims is to combinatorialize the local analysis of topological entropy and related mixing properties. We also reframe our theory of dynamical independence in terms of tensor products and thereby expand its scope to C*-dynamics.

On Gromov-Hausdorff convergence for operator metric spaces

We introduce an analogue for Lip-normed operator systems of the second author's order-unit quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance and prove that it is equal to the first author's complete distance. This enables us to consolidate the basic theory of what might be called operator Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. In particular we establish a completeness theorem and deduce continuity in quantum tori, Berezin-Toeplitz quantizations, and theta-deformations from work of the second author. We show that approximability by Lip-normed matrix algebras is equivalent to 1-exactness of the underlying operator space and, by applying a result of Junge and Pisier, that for n greater than or equal to 7 the set of isometry classes of n-dimensional Lip-normed operator systems is nonseparable. We also treat the question of generic complete order structure.

Dynamical entropy in Banach spaces

We introduce a version of Voiculescu-Brown approximation entropy for isometric automorphisms of Banach spaces and develop within this framework the connection between dynamics and the local theory of Banach spaces discovered by Glasner and Weiss. Our fundamental result concerning this contractive approximation entropy, or CA entropy, characterizes the occurrence of positive values both geometrically and topologically. This leads to various applications; for example, we obtain a geometric description of the topological Pinsker factor and show that a C*-algebra is type I if and only if every multiplier inner *-automorphism has zero CA entropy. We also examine the behaviour of CA entropy under various product constructions and determine its value in many examples, including isometric automorphisms of l_p spaces and noncommutative tensor product shifts.

Entropy and induced dynamics on state spaces

We consider the topological entropy of state space and quasi-state space homeomorphisms induced from C*-algebra automorphisms. Our main result asserts that, for automorphisms of separable exact C*-algebras, zero Voiculescu-Brown entropy implies zero topological entropy on the quasi-state space (and also more generally on the entire unit ball of the dual). As an application we obtain a simple description of the topological Pinsker algebra in terms of local Voiculescu-Brown entropy.

A geometric approach to Voiculescu-Brown entropy

A basic problem in dynamics is to identify systems with positive entropy, i.e., systems which are "chaotic." While there is a vast collection of results addressing this issue in topological dynamics, the phenomenon of positive entropy remains by and large a mystery within the broader noncommutative domain of C*-algebraic dynamics. To shed some light on the noncommutative situation we propose a geometric perspective inspired by work of Glasner and Weiss on topological entropy. This is a written version of the author's talk at the Winter 2002 Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society in Ottawa, Ontario.

Positive topological entropy and $\ell_1$

We characterize positive topological entropy for quasi-state space homeomorphisms induced from $C^*$-algebra automorphisms in terms of dynamically generated subspaces isomorphic to $\ell_1$. This geometric condition is also used to give a description of the topological Pinsker algebra. In particular we obtain a geometric characterization of positive entropy for topological dynamical systems, as well as an analogue for completely positive topological entropy of Glasner and Weiss's combinatorial characterization of completely positive Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy.

Positive Voiculescu-Brown entropy in noncommutative toral automorphisms

We show that the Voiculescu-Brown entropy of a noncommutative toral automorphism arising from a matrix S in GL(d,Z) is at least half the value of the topological entropy of the corresponding classical toral automorphism. We also obtain some information concerning the positivity of local Voiculescu-Brown entropy with respect to single unitaries. In particular we show that if S has no roots of unity as eigenvalues then the local Voiculescu-Brown entropy with respect to every product of canonical unitaries is positive, and also that in the presence of completely positive CNT entropy the unital version of local Voiculescu-Brown entropy with respect to every non-scalar unitary is positive.

Dimension and dynamical entropy for metrized C*-algebras

We introduce notions of dimension and dynamical entropy for unital C*-algebras ``metrized'' by means of c-Lip-norms, which are complex-scalar versions of the Lip-norms constitutive of Rieffel's compact quantum metric spaces. Our examples involve UHF algebras and noncommutative tori. In particular we show that the entropy of a noncommutative toral automorphism with respect to the canonical c-Lip-norm coincides with the topological entropy of its commutative analogue.

Matricial quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance

We develop a matricial version of Rieffel's Gromov-Hausdorff distance for compact quantum metric spaces within the setting of operator systems and unital C*-algebras. Our approach yields a metric space of ``isometric'' unital complete order isomorphism classes of metrized operator systems which in many cases exhibits the same convergence properties as those in the quantum metric setting, as for example in Rieffel's approximation of the sphere by matrix algebras using Berezin quantization. Within the metric subspace of metrized unital C*-algebras we establish the convergence of sequences which are Cauchy with respect to a larger Leibniz distance, and we also prove an analogue of the precompactness theorems of Gromov and Rieffel.

Noncommutative pressure and the variational principle in Cuntz-Krieger-type C*-algebras

We define a notion of dynamical pressure at a self-adjoint element for a contractive completely positive self-map of an exact C*-algebra which adopts Voiculescu's approximation approach to noncommutative entropy and extends the Voiculescu-Brown topological entropy and Neshveyev-Stormer unital-nuclear pressure. A variational inequality bounding the pressure below by the free energies with respect to the Sauvageot-Thouvenot entropy is established in two stages via the introduction of a local state approximation entropy, whose associated free energies function as an intermediate term. Pimsner C*-algebras furnish a framework for investigating the variational principle, which asserts the equality of the pressure and the supremum of the free energies over all dynamically invariant states. In one direction we extend Brown's result on the constancy of the Voiculescu-Brown entropy upon passing to the crossed product, and in another we show that the pressure of a self-adjoint element over the Markov subshift underlying the canonical map on a Cuntz-Kreiger algebra is equal to its classical pressure. The latter result is extended to a more general setting comprising an expanded class of Cuntz-Krieger-type Pimsner algebras, leading to the variational principle for self-adjoint elements in a diagonal subalgebra. Equilibrium states are constructed from KMS states under certain conditions in the case of Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
