Curved nonlinear waveguides

The Dirichlet p-Laplacian in tubes of arbitrary cross-section along infinite curves in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension is investigated. First, it is shown that the gap between the lowest point of the generalised spectrum and the essential spectrum is positive whenever the cross-section is circular and the tube is asymptotically straight, untwisted and non-trivially bent. Second, a Hardy-type inequality is derived for unbent and non-trivially twisted tubes.

Uniform resolvent estimates and absence of eigenvalues of biharmonic operators with complex potentials

We quantify the subcriticality of the bilaplacian in dimensions greater than four by providing explicit repulsivity/smallness conditions on complex additive perturbations under which the spectrum remains stable. Our assumptions cover critical Rellich-type potentials too. As a byproduct we obtain uniform resolvent estimates in weighted spaces. Some of the results are new also in the self-adjoint setting.

Optimisation and monotonicity of the second Robin eigenvalue on a planar exterior domain

We consider the Laplace operator in the exterior of a compact set in the plane, subject to Robin boundary conditions. If the boundary coupling is sufficiently negative, there are at least two discrete eigenvalues below the essential spectrum. We state a general conjecture that the second eigenvalue is maximised by the exterior of a disk under isochoric or isoperimetric constraints. We prove an isoelastic version of the conjecture for the exterior of convex domains. Finally, we establish a monotonicity result for the second eigenvalue under the condition that the compact set is strictly star-shaped and centrally symmetric.

Criticality transition for positive powers of the discrete Laplacian on the half line

We study the criticality and subcriticality of powers $(-Δ)^α$ with $α>0$ of the discrete Laplacian $-Δ$ acting on $\ell^2(\mathbb{N})$. We prove that these positive powers of the Laplacian are critical if and only if $α\ge 3/2$. We complement our analysis with Hardy type inequalities for $(-Δ)^α$ in the subcritical regimes $α\in (0,3/2)$. As an illustration of the critical case, we describe the negative eigenvalues emerging by coupling the discrete bilaplacian with an arbitrarily small localized potential.

Reverse isoperimetric inequality for the lowest Robin eigenvalue of a triangle

We consider the Laplace operator on a triangle, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. We prove that the equilateral triangle is a local maximiser of the lowest eigenvalue among all triangles of a given area provided that the negative boundary parameter is sufficiently small in absolute value, with the smallness depending on the area only. Moreover, using various trial functions, we obtain sufficient conditions for the global optimality of the equilateral triangle under fixed area constraint in the regimes of small and large couplings. We also discuss the constraint of fixed perimeter.

Hardy inequalities for magnetic $p$-Laplacians

We establish improved Hardy inequalities for the magnetic $p$-Laplacian due to adding nontrivial magnetic fields. We also prove that for Aharonov-Bohm magnetic fields the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality becomes strictly larger than in the case of a magnetic-free $p$-Laplacian. We also post some remarks with open problems.

Bound states in soft quantum layers

We develop a general approach to study three-dimensional Schroedinger operators with confining potentials depending on the distance to a surface. The main idea is to apply parallel coordinates based on the surface but outside its cut locus in the Euclidean space. If the surface is asymptotically planar in a suitable sense, we give an estimate on the location of the essential spectrum of the Schroedinger operator. Moreover, if the surface coincides up to a compact subset with a surface of revolution with strictly positive total Gauss curvature, it is shown that the Schroedinger operator possesses an infinite number of discrete eigenvalues.

Complex-self-adjointness

We develop the concept of operators in Hilbert spaces which are similar to their adjoints via antiunitary operators, the latter being not necessarily involutive. We discuss extension theory, refined polar and singular-value decompositions, and antilinear eigenfunction expansions. The study is motivated by physical symmetries in quantum mechanics with non-self-adjoint operators.

An improved discrete Rellich inequality on the half-line

Based on a new idea of factorization, we prove an improved discrete Rellich inequality and discuss its optimality. We also give a conjecture on improved higher order discrete Hardy-like inequalities and formulate an open problem for the discrete Rellich inequality on the full space.

Spectrum of the wave equation with Dirac damping on a non-compact star graph

We consider the wave equation on non-compact star graphs, subject to a distributional damping defined through a Robin-type vertex condition with complex coupling. It is shown that the non-self-adjoint generator of the evolution problem admits an abrupt change in its spectral properties for a special coupling related to the number of graph edges. As an application, we show that the evolution problem is highly unstable for the critical couplings. The relationship with the Dirac equation in non-relativistic quantum mechanics is also mentioned.

Spectral properties of relativistic quantum waveguides

We make a spectral analysis of the massive Dirac operator in a tubular neighborhood of an unbounded planar curve, subject to infinite mass boundary conditions. Under general assumptions on the curvature, we locate the essential spectrum and derive an effective Hamiltonian on the base curve which approximates the original operator in the thin-strip limit. We also investigate the existence of bound states in the non-relativistic limit and give a geometric quantitative condition for the bound states to exist.

Pseudomodes for non-self-adjoint Dirac operators

Depending on the behaviour of the complex-valued electromagnetic potential in the neighbourhood of infinity, pseudomodes of one-dimensional Dirac operators corresponding to large pseudoeigenvalues are constructed. This is a first systematic non-semi-classical approach, which results in substantial progress in achieving optimal conditions and conclusions as well as in covering a wide class of previously inaccessible potentials, including superexponential ones.

Spectral optimisation of Dirac rectangles

We are concerned with the dependence of the lowest positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on the geometry of rectangles, subject to infinite-mass boundary conditions. We conjecture that the square is a global minimiser both under the area or perimeter constraints. Contrary to well-known non-relativistic analogues, we show that the present spectral problem does not admit explicit solutions. We prove partial optimisation results based on a variational reformulation and newly established lower and upper bounds to the Dirac eigenvalue. We also propose an alternative approach based on symmetries of rectangles and a non-convex minimisation problem; this implies a sufficient condition formulated in terms of a symmetry of the minimiser which guarantees the conjectured results.

Spectral enclosures and stability for non-self-adjoint discrete Schroedinger operators on the half-line

We make a spectral analysis of discrete Schroedinger operators on the half-line, subject to complex Robin-type boundary couplings and complex-valued potentials. First, optimal spectral enclosures are obtained for summable potentials. Second, general smallness conditions on the potentials guaranteeing a spectral stability are established. Third, a general identity which allows to generate optimal discrete Hardy inequalities for the discrete Dirichlet Laplacian on the half-line is proved.

Horizontal magnetic fields and improved Hardy inequalities in the Heisenberg group

In this paper we introduce a notion of magnetic field in the Heisenberg group and we study its influence on spectral properties of the corresponding magnetic (sub-elliptic) Laplacian. We show that uniform magnetic fields uplift the bottom of the spectrum. For magnetic fields vanishing at infinity, including Aharonov--Bohm potentials, we derive magnetic improvements to a variety of Hardy-type inequalities for the Heisenberg sub-Laplacian. In particular, we establish a sub-Riemannian analogue of Laptev and Weidl sub-criticality result for magnetic Laplacians in the plane. Instrumental for our argument is the validity of a Hardy-type inequality for the Folland--Stein operator, that we prove in this paper and has an interest on its own.

On the two-dimensional quantum confined Stark effect in strong electric fields

We consider a Stark Hamiltonian on a two-dimensional bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the strong electric field limit we derive, under certain local convexity conditions, a three-term asymptotic expansion of the low-lying eigenvalues. This shows that the excitation frequencies are proportional to the square root of the boundary curvature at a certain point determined by the direction of the electric field.
