On the improvement of the Hardy inequality due to singular magnetic fields

We establish magnetic improvements upon the classical Hardy inequality for two specific choices of singular magnetic fields. First, we consider the Aharonov-Bohm field in all dimensions and establish a sharp Hardy-type inequality that takes into account both the dimensional as well as the magnetic flux contributions. Second, in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we derive a non-trivial magnetic Hardy inequality for a magnetic field that vanishes at infinity and diverges along a plane.

The minimally anisotropic metric operator in quasi-Hermitian quantum mechanics

We propose a unique way how to choose a new inner product in a Hilbert space with respect to which an originally non-self-adjoint operator similar to a self-adjoint operator becomes self-adjoint. Our construction is based on minimising a 'Hilbert-Schmidt distance' to the original inner product among the entire class of admissible inner products. We prove that either the minimiser exists and is unique, or it does not exist at all. In the former case we derive a system of Euler-Lagrange equations by which the optimal inner product is determined. A sufficient condition for the existence of the unique minimally anisotropic metric is obtained. The abstract results are supplied by examples in which the optimal inner product does not coincide with the most popular choice fixed through a charge-like symmetry.

Lifshits tails for randomly twisted quantum waveguides

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian $H_γ$ on a 3D twisted waveguide with random Anderson-type twisting $γ$. We introduce the integrated density of states $N_γ$ for the operator $H_γ$, and investigate the Lifshits tails of $N_γ$, i.e. the asymptotic behavior of $N_γ(E)$ as $E \downarrow \inf {\rm supp}\, dN_γ$. In particular, we study the dependence of the Lifshits exponent on the decay rate of the single-site twisting at infinity.

Complex magnetic fields: An improved Hardy-Laptev-Weidl inequality and quasi-self-adjointness

We show that allowing magnetic fields to be complex-valued leads to an improvement in the magnetic Hardy-type inequality due to Laptev and Weidl. The proof is based on the study of momenta on the circle with complex magnetic fields, which is of independent interest in the context of PT-symmetric and quasi-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We study basis properties of the non-self-adjoint momenta and derive closed formulae for the similarity transforms relating them to self-adjoint operators.

Ruled strips with asymptotically diverging twisting

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in a two-dimensional strip composed of segments translated along a straight line with respect to a rotation angle with velocity diverging at infinity. We show that this model exhibits a "raise of dimension" at infinity leading to an essential spectrum determined by an asymptotic three-dimensional tube of annular cross-section. If the cross-section of the asymptotic tube is a disk, we also prove the existence of discrete eigenvalues below the essential spectrum.

Absence of eigenvalues of two-dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operators

By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the electric potential and magnetic field which guarantee that the corresponding two-dimensional Schroedinger operator possesses no point spectrum. The settings of complex-valued electric potentials and singular magnetic potentials of Aharonov-Bohm field are also covered.

Optimisation of the lowest Robin eigenvalue in the exterior of a compact set

We consider the problem of geometric optimisation of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the exterior of a compact planar set, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. Under either a constraint of fixed perimeter or area, we show that the maximiser within the class of exteriors of convex sets is always the exterior of a disk. We also argue why the results fail without the convexity constraint and in higher dimensions.

Optimisation of the lowest Robin eigenvalue in the exterior of a compact set, II: non-convex domains and higher dimensions

We consider the problem of geometric optimisation of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the exterior of a compact set in any dimension, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. As an improvement upon our previous work (arXiv:1608.04896, to appear in J. Convex Anal.), we show that under either a constraint of fixed perimeter or area, the maximiser within the class of exteriors of simply connected planar sets is always the exterior of a disk, without the need of convexity assumption. Moreover, we generalise the result to disconnected compact planar sets. Namely, we prove that under a constraint of fixed average value of the perimeter over all the connected components, the maximiser within the class of disconnected compact planar sets, consisting of finitely many simply connected components, is again a disk. In higher dimensions, we prove a completely new result that the lowest point in the spectrum is maximised by the exterior of a ball among all sets exterior to bounded convex sets satisfying a constraint on the integral of a dimensional power of the mean curvature of their boundaries. Furthermore, it follows that the critical coupling at which the lowest point in the spectrum becomes a discrete eigenvalue emerging from the essential spectrum is minimised under the same constraint by the critical coupling for the exterior of a ball.

Reduction of dimension as a consequence of norm-resolvent convergence and applications

This paper is devoted to dimensional reductions via the norm resolvent convergence. We derive explicit bounds on the resolvent difference as well as spectral asymptotics. The efficiency of our abstract tool is demonstrated by its application on seemingly different PDE problems from various areas of mathematical physics; all are analysed in a unified manner now, known results are recovered and new ones established.

Spectral stability of Schroedinger operators with subordinated complex potentials

We prove that the spectrum of Schroedinger operators in three dimensions is purely continuous and coincides with the non-negative semiaxis for all potentials satisfying a form-subordinate smallness condition. By developing the method of multipliers, we also establish the absence of point spectrum for Schroedinger operators in all dimensions under various alternative hypotheses, still allowing complex-valued potentials with critical singularities.

Spectral transitions for Aharonov-Bohm Laplacians on conical layers

We consider the Laplace operator in a tubular neighbourhood of a conical surface of revolution, subject to an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field supported on the axis of symmetry and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. We show that there exists a critical total magnetic flux depending on the aperture of the conical surface for which the system undergoes an abrupt spectral transition from infinitely many eigenvalues below the essential spectrum to an empty discrete spectrum. For the critical flux we establish a Hardy-type inequality. In the regime with infinite discrete spectrum we obtain sharp spectral asymptotics with refined estimate of the remainder and investigate the dependence of the eigenvalues on the aperture of the surface and the flux of the magnetic field.

Asymptotic spectral analysis in colliding leaky quantum layers

We consider the Schroedinger operator with a complex delta interaction supported by two parallel hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space of any dimension. We analyse spectral properties of the system in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. We establish the norm-resolvent convergence to a limiting operator and derive first-order corrections for the corresponding eigenvalues.

Bounds and extremal domains for Robin eigenvalues with negative boundary parameter

We present some new bounds for the first Robin eigenvalue with a negative boundary parameter. These include the constant volume problem, where the bounds are based on the shrinking coordinate method, and a proof that in the fixed perimeter case the disk maximises the first eigenvalue for all values of the parameter. This is in contrast with what happens in the constant area problem, where the disk is the maximiser only for small values of the boundary parameter. We also present sharp upper and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the ball and spherical shells. These results are complemented by the numerical optimisation of the first four and two eigenvalues in 2 and 3 dimensions, respectively, and an evaluation of the quality of the upper bounds obtained. We also study the bifurcations from the ball as the boundary parameter becomes large (negative).

Non-accretive Schrödinger operators and exponential decay of their eigenfunctions

We consider non-self-adjoint electromagnetic Schrödinger operators on arbitrary open sets with complex scalar potentials whose real part is not necessarily bounded from below. Under a suitable sufficient condition on the electromagnetic potential, we introduce a Dirichlet realisation as a closed densely defined operator with non-empty resolvent set and show that the eigenfunctions corresponding to discrete eigenvalues satisfy an Agmon-type exponential decay.

The Hardy inequality and the heat equation with magnetic field in any dimension

In the Euclidean space of any dimension d, we consider the heat semigroup generated by the magnetic Schroedinger operator from which an inverse-square potential is subtracted in order to make the operator critical in the magnetic-free case. Assuming that the magnetic field is compactly supported, we show that the polynomial large-time behaviour of the heat semigroup is determined by the eigenvalue problem for a magnetic Schroedinger operator on the (d-1)-dimensional sphere whose vector potential reflects the behaviour of the magnetic field at the space infinity. From the spectral problem on the sphere, we deduce that in d=2 there is an improvement of the decay rate of the heat semigroup by a polynomial factor with power proportional to the distance of the total magnetic flux to the discrete set of flux quanta, while there is no extra polynomial decay rate in higher dimensions. To prove the results, we establish new magnetic Hardy-type inequalities for the Schroedinger operator and develop the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the associated heat equation.

A lower bound to the spectral threshold in curved quantum layers

We derive a lower bound to the spectral threshold of the Dirichlet Laplacian in tubular neighbourhoods of constant radius about complete surfaces. This lower bound is given by the lowest eigenvalue of a one-dimensional operator depending on the radius and principal curvatures of the reference surface. Moreover, we show that it is optimal if the reference surface is non-negatively curved.

The Hardy inequality and the heat flow in curved wedges

We show that the polynomial decay rate of the heat semigroup of the Dirichlet Laplacian in curved planar wedges equals the sum of the usual dimensional decay rate and a multiple of the reciprocal value of the opening angle. To prove the result, we develop the method of self-similar variables for the associated heat equation and study the asymptotic behaviour of the transformed non-autonomous parabolic problem for large times. We also establish an improved Hardy inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian in non-trivially curved wedges and state a conjecture about an improved decay rate in this case.

Pseudospectra of the Schroedinger operator with a discontinuous complex potential

We study spectral properties of the Schroedinger operator with an imaginary sign potential on the real line. By constructing the resolvent kernel, we show that the pseudospectra of this operator are highly non-trivial, because of a blow-up of the resolvent at infinity. Furthermore, we derive estimates on the location of eigenvalues of the operator perturbed by complex potentials. The overall analysis demonstrates striking differences with respect to the weak-coupling behaviour of the Laplacian.
