Migrating Carrollian particles on magnetized black hole horizons

By considering a misaligned (asymptotically uniform) magnetic field in the background of a rotating black hole, we uncover a possibility for a highly non-trivial motion of Carrollian particles on the black hole horizon that is characterized by a time-dependent velocity field and reminds us (because of its latitudinal oscillations) of a 'monarch butterfly migration'.

Carrollian Motion in Magnetized Black Hole Horizons

We revisit the motion of massless particles with anyonic spin in the horizon of Kerr--Newman geometry. As recently shown, such particles can move within the horizon of the black hole due to the coupling of charges associated with a 2-parametric central extension of the 2-dimensional Carroll group to the magnetic field generated by the black hole -- the so called "anyonic spin-Hall effect". We show that the previously computed magnetic field is not invariant under Carroll diffeomorphisms and find another result which respects these symmetries of the horizon. We also consider a more astrophysically relevant case of a (weakly charged) rotating back hole placed in a uniform magnetic field, which could, for instance, be induced by the surrounding plasma. We show that a qualitatively similar magnetic field assisted anyonic spin-Hall effect takes place, even in the absence of black hole rotation. The theoretical possibility of a motion induced by a magnetic monopole is also studied.

Holographic CFT Phase Transitions and Criticality for Charged AdS Black Holes

We study the hololgraphic dual of the extended thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, charged AdS black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravitational thermodynamics of AdS black holes can be extended by allowing for variations of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant. In the dual CFT this corresponds to including the central charge $C$ and its chemical potential $μ$ as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables, in addition to the standard pairs: temperature vs. entropy $(T,S)$, electric potential vs. charge $(\tilde Φ, \tilde Q)$ and field theory pressure vs. volume $(p,{\cal V})$. For the (grand) canonical ensembles at fixed $(\tilde Q, {\cal V}, C), (\tilde Φ, {\cal V},C)$ and $(\tilde Q, {\cal V}, μ)$ we show the CFT description of charged AdS black holes contains either critical phenomena or interesting phase behaviour. In the fixed $(\tilde Q, \mathcal V, μ)$ we find a new zeroth-order phase transition between a high- and low-entropy phase at some $μ$-dependent temperature. Finally, we point out there is no critical behaviour in the fixed $p$ ensembles, i.e. there is no $p - \cal V$ criticality, and hence the CFT state dual to a classical charged black hole cannot be a Van der Waals fluid.

Vortex/anti-vortex pair creation in black hole thermodynamics

An isolated critical point is a peculiar thermodynamic critical point that occurs in the phase diagram of hyperbolic black holes in Kth-order Lovelock gravity in higher dimensions (with K odd) for special tuned Lovelock coupling constants. It corresponds to a "merger" of two swallowtails and is characterized by non-standard critical exponents. Upon employing a recent proposal for assigning a topological charge to thermodynamic critical points, we argue that the isolated critical point offers an interpretation corresponding to the onset of a topological phase transition of a "vortex/anti-vortex pair".

Accelerated Black Holes beyond Maxwell's Electrodynamics

Theories of non-linear electrodynamics naturally describe deviations from Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Among these, of special interest is the recently discovered ModMax electrodynamics, which is a unique 1-parametric generalization of Maxwell's theory that possesses the conformal invariance as well as the electromagnetic duality. In this paper we construct the asymptotically AdS accelerated black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics - providing thus a first example of accelerated solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. Our study opens a window towards studying radiative spacetimes in non-linear electromagnetic regime as well as raises new challenges for their corresponding holographic interpretation.

Slowly rotating black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics

We show how (at least in principle) one can construct electrically and magnetically charged slowly rotating black hole solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics (NLE). Our generalized Lense-Thirring ansatz is, apart from the static metric function $f$ and the electrostatic potential $ϕ$ inherited from the corresponding spherical solution, characterized by two new functions $h$ (in the metric) and $ω$ (in the vector potential) encoding the effect of rotation. In the linear Maxwell case, the rotating solutions are completely characterized by static solution, featuring $h=(f-1)/r^2$ and $ω=1$. We show that when the first is imposed, the ansatz is inconsistent with any restricted (see below) NLE but the Maxwell electrodynamics. In particular, this implies that the (standard) Newman-Janis algorithm cannot be used to generate rotating solutions for any restricted non-trivial NLE. We present a few explicit examples of slowly rotating solutions in particular models of NLE, as well as briefly discuss the NLE charged Taub-NUT spacetimes.

Slowly rotating black holes with exact Killing tensor symmetries

We present a novel family of slowly rotating black hole solutions in four, and higher dimensions, that extend the well known Lense-Thirring spacetime and solve the field equations to linear order in rotation parameter. As "exact metrics" in their own right, the new (non-vacuum) spacetimes feature the following two remarkable properties: i) near the black hole horizon they can be cast in the, manifestly regular, Painlevé-Gullstrand form and ii) they admit exact Killing tensor symmetries. We show these symmetries are inherited from the principal Killing-Yano tensor of the exact rotating black hole geometry in the slow rotation limit. This provides a missing link as to how the exact hidden symmetries emerge as rotation is switched on. Remarkably, in higher dimensions the novel generalized Lense-Thirring spacetimes feature a rapidly growing number of exact irreducible rank-2, as well as higher-rank, Killing tensors -- giving a first example of a physical spacetime with more hidden than explicit symmetries.

Generalized Lense--Thirring metrics: higher-curvature corrections and solutions with matter

The Lense--Thirring spacetime describes a 4-dimensional slowly rotating approximate solution of vacuum Einstein equations valid to a linear order in rotation parameter. It is fully characterized by a single metric function of the corresponding static (Schwarzschild) solution. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the Lense--Thirring spacetimes to the higher-dimensional multiply-spinning case, with an ansatz that is not necessarily fully characterized by a single (static) metric function. This generalization lets us study slowly rotating spacetimes in various higher curvature gravities as well as in the presence of non-trivial matter. Moreover, the ansatz can be recast in Painlev{é}--Gullstrand form (and thence is manifestly regular on the horizon) and admits a tower of exact rank-2 and higher rank Killing tensors that rapidly grows with the number of dimensions. In particular, we construct slowly multiply-spinning solutions in Lovelock gravity and notably show that in four dimensions Einstein gravity is the only non-trivial theory amongst all up to quartic curvature gravities that admits a Lense--Thirring solution characterized by a single metric function.

Quantum Detection of Conicity

We investigate the sensitivity of an Unruh-DeWitt detector to the global features of a deficit angle that are otherwise classically inaccessible. Specifically, we consider a detector placed inside an infinite thin hollow cylinder whose spacetime is everywhere flat but outside of which the spacetime has a deficit angle and study its response to a scalar field to which it couples. We find that the response of the detector is sensitive to the deficit angle, despite the fact that it does not interact with the cylinder.

Quantum imprints of gravitational shockwaves

Gravitational shockwaves are simple exact solutions of Einstein equations representing the fields of ultrarelativistic sources and idealized gravitational waves (shocks). Historically, much work has focused on shockwaves in the context of possible black hole formation in high energy particle collisions, yet they remain at the forefront of research even today. Representing hard modes in the bulk, shocks give rise to the gravitational memory effect at the classical level and implant supertranslation (BMS) hair onto a classical spacetime at the quantum level. The aim of this paper is to further our understanding of the `information content' of such supertranslations. Namely, we show that, contrary to the several claims in the literature, a gravitational shockwave does leave a quantum imprint on the vacuum state of a test quantum field and that this imprint is accessible to local observers carrying Unruh--DeWitt (UDW) detectors in this spacetime.

Black hole chemistry: thermodynamics with Lambda

We review recent developments on the thermodynamics of black holes in extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is interpreted as thermodynamic pressure and treated as a thermodynamic variable in its own right. In this approach, the mass of the black hole is no longer regarded as internal energy, rather it is identified with the chemical enthalpy. This leads to an extended dictionary for black hole thermodynamic quantities, in particular a notion of thermodynamic volume emerges for a given black hole spacetime. This volume is conjectured to satisfy the reverse isoperimetric inequality - an inequality imposing a bound on the amount of entropy black hole can carry for a fixed thermodynamic volume. New thermodynamic phase transitions naturally emerge from these identifications. Namely, we show that black holes can be understood from the viewpoint of chemistry, in terms of concepts such as Van der Waals fluids, reentrant phase transitions, and triple points. We also review the recent attempts at extending the AdS/CFT dictionary in this setting, discuss the connections with horizon thermodynamics, applications to Lifshitz spacetimes, and outline possible future directions in this field.

Thermodynamics of AdS Black Holes: Central Charge Criticality

We reconsider the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting where both the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the gravitational Newton constant $G$ are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both $Λ$ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of the charged AdS black holes, in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of freedom in the CFT. Compared to the "old" $P-V$ criticality, this new criticality is "universal" (independent of the bulk pressure) and directly relates to the thermodynamics of the dual field theory and its central charge.

Symmetry operators for the conformal wave equation in rotating black hole spacetimes

We present covariant symmetry operators for the conformal wave equation in the (off-shell) Kerr-NUT-AdS spacetimes. These operators, that are constructed from the principal Killing-Yano tensor, its `symmetry descendants', and the curvature tensor, guarantee separability of the conformal wave equation in these spacetimes. We next discuss how these operators give rise to a full set of conformally invariant mutually commuting operators for the conformally rescaled spacetimes and underlie the $R$-separability of the conformal wave equation therein. Finally, by employing the WKB approximation we derive the associated Hamilton-Jacobi equation with a scalar curvature potential term and show its separability in the Kerr-NUT-AdS spacetimes.

Taub-NUT solutions in conformal electrodynamics

We construct a novel charged Taub-NUT spacetime, providing a first non-trivial example of a self-gravitating solution to the recently proposed ModMax theory, the most general (1-parametric) theory of non-linear electrodynamics that is characterized by both the conformal symmetry and the $SO(2)$ duality-rotation invariance. The spacetime features non-trivial magnetic fields, in their presence the non-linearity of the field becomes apparent and the solution is distinguished from that of the Maxwell theory. Thermodynamics of the new solution, the charged black hole limit of vanishing NUT parameter, and the self-dual solutions are also briefly discussed.

Quantum Detection of Inertial Frame Dragging

A relativistic theory of gravity like general relativity produces phenomena differing fundamentally from Newton's theory. An example, analogous to electromagnetic induction, is gravitomagnetism, or the dragging of inertial frames by mass-energy currents. These effects have recently been confirmed by classical observations. Here we show, for the first time, that they can be observed by a quantum detector. We study the response function of Unruh De-Witt detectors placed in a slowly rotating shell. We show that the response function picks up the presence of rotation even though the spacetime inside the shell is flat and the detector is locally inertial. The detector can distinguish between the static situation when the shell is non-rotating and the stationary case when the shell rotates and the dragging of inertial frames, i.e. gravitomagnetic effects, arise. Moreover, it can do so when the detector is switched on for a finite time interval within which a light signal cannot travel to the shell and back to convey the presence of rotation.

Lower-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and BTZ Black Holes

We consider the $D\to 3$ limit of Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find two distinct but similar versions of the theory and obtain black hole solutions for each. For one theory the solution is an interesting generalization of the BTZ black hole that does not have constant curvature but whose thermodynamics is identical. The other theory admits a solution that is asymptotically AdS but does not approach the BTZ black hole in the limit of small Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also discuss the distinction between our solutions and those obtained by taking a $D\to 3$ limit of solutions to $D$-dimensional Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that these latter metrics are not solutions of the theories we consider except for particular constraints on the parameters.

Rotating Gauss-Bonnet BTZ Black Holes

We obtain rotating black hole solutions to the novel 3D Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity recently proposed. These solutions generalize the BTZ metric and are not of constant curvature. They possess an ergoregion and outer horizon, but do not have an inner horizon. We present their basic properties and show that they break the universality of thermodynamics present for their static charged counterparts, whose properties we also discuss. Extending our considerations to higher dimensions, we also obtain novel 4D Gauss-Bonnet rotating black strings.

Quantum Distinction of Inertial Frames: Local vs. Global

We study the response function of Unruh-deWitt detectors placed in a flat spacetime inside a thin matter shell. We show that the response function distinguishes between the local and global (Minkowski) inertial frames and picks up the presence of the shell even when the detector is switched on for a finite time interval within which a light signal cannot travel to the shell and back as required by a classical measurement. We also analyze how the response of the detector depends on its location within the shell.
