IIA Perspective On Cascading Gauge Theory

We study the N=1 supersymmetric cascading gauge theory found in type IIB string theory on p regular and M fractional D3-branes at the tip of the conifold, using the T-dual type IIA description. We reproduce the supersymmetric vacuum structure of this theory, and show that the IIA analog of the non-supersymmetric state found by Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde in the IIB description is metastable in string theory, but the barrier for tunneling to the supersymmetric vacuum goes to infinity in the field theory limit. We also comment on the N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory corresponding to regular and fractional D3-branes on a near-singular K3, and clarify the origin of the cascade in this theory.

Holographic Walking from Tachyon DBI

We use holography to study Conformal Phase Transitions, which are believed to be realized in four dimensional QCD and play an important role in walking technicolor models of electroweak symmetry breaking. At strong coupling they can be modeled by the non-linear dynamics of a tachyonic scalar field with mass close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound in anti de Sitter spacetime. Taking the action for this field to have a Tachyon-Dirac-Born-Infeld form gives rise to models that resemble hard and soft wall AdS/QCD, with a dynamically generated wall. For hard wall models, the highly excited spectrum has the KK form m_n ~ n; in the soft wall case we exhibit potentials with m_n ~ n^α, 0<α\leq1/2. We investigate the finite temperature phase structure and find first or second order symmetry restoration transitions, depending on the behavior of the potential near the origin of field space.

Conformal Phase Transitions at Weak and Strong Coupling

D3 and D7-branes intersecting in 2+1 dimensions give rise at low energies to N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to defect fermions in the fundamental representation. This theory undergoes a BKT-type phase transition from a conformal phase to one in which the fermions acquire a non-zero mass when the 't Hooft coupling of the N=4 SYM exceeds a critical value. To study this transition, we continue the parameters of the model to a regime where a gravitational description is valid. We use it to calculate the masses of mesons and the phase diagram as a function of temperature and chemical potential. We also comment on the relation of our discussion to the transition from the non-abelian Coulomb phase to a confining one believed to occur in QCD at a critical number of flavors.

a-Maximization, Global Symmetries and RG Flows

We construct the a-function of [1] for general F-term perturbations of a 3+1 dimensional N=1 SCFT. We use this construction to argue that the central charge a always decreases along the corresponding RG flows, and discuss some other applications.

Holographic MQCD

We study a brane configuration of D4-branes and NS5-branes in weakly coupled type IIA string theory, which describes in a particular limit d=4 N=1 SU(N+p) supersymmetric QCD with 2N flavors and a quartic superpotential. We describe the geometric realization of the supersymmetric vacuum structure of this gauge theory. We focus on the confining vacua of the gauge theory, whose holographic description is given by the MQCD brane configuration in the near-horizon geometry of N D4-branes. This description, which gives an embedding of MQCD into a field theory decoupled from gravity, is valid for 1 << p << N, in the limit of large five dimensional `t Hooft couplings for the color and flavor groups. We analyze various properties of the theory in this limit, such as the spectrum of mesons, the finite temperature behavior, and the quark-anti-quark potential. We also discuss the same brane configuration on a circle, where it gives a geometric description of the moduli space of the Klebanov-Strassler cascading theory, and some non-supersymmetric generalizations.

Spontaneous SUSY Breaking in Various Dimensions

We generalize the ISS model of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking to lower dimensions. We also comment on the dynamics of the corresponding brane systems in string theory, and on possible applications to gauge/gravity duality.

Dynamical Vacuum Selection in String Theory

We study a system of D-branes localized near an intersection of Neveu-Schwarz fivebranes, that is known to exhibit a landscape of supersymmetric and (metastable) supersymmetry breaking vacua. We show that early universe cosmology drives it to a particular long-lived supersymmetry breaking ground state.

D-Terms and Supersymmetry Breaking from Branes

Metastable supersymmetry breaking configurations of D-branes and NS5-branes in string theory often owe their existence to classical gravitational interactions between the branes. We show that in the effective theory of the light fields, these interactions give rise to a non-canonical Kähler potential and other D-terms. String theory provides a UV completion in which these non-renormalizable terms can be computed. We use these observations to clarify the relation between the phase structure of ISS-type models and their brane realizations.

Brane-Antibrane Dynamics From the Tachyon DBI Action

The Tachyon-Dirac-Born-Infeld (TDBI) action captures some aspects of the dynamics of non-BPS D-branes in type II string theory. We show that it can also be used to study the classical interactions of BPS branes and antibranes. Our analysis sheds light on real time D-Dbar tachyon condensation, on the proposal that the tachyon field can be thought of as an extra spatial dimension whose role is similar to the radial direction in holography, and on A. Sen's open string completeness conjecture.

Seiberg Duality in Chern-Simons Theory

We argue that N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories exhibit a strong-weak coupling Seiberg-type duality. We also discuss supersymmetry breaking in these theories.

Holographic Duals of Long Open Strings

We study the holographic map between long open strings, which stretch between D-branes separated in the bulk space-time, and operators in the dual boundary theory. We focus on a generalization of the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic model of QCD, where the simplest chiral condensate involves an operator of this type. Its expectation value is dominated by a semi-classical string worldsheet, as for Wilson loops. We also discuss the deformation of the model by this operator, and in particular its effect on the meson spectrum. This deformation can be thought of as a generalization of a quark mass term to strong coupling. It leads to the first top-down holographic model of QCD with a non-Abelian chiral symmetry which is both spontaneously and explicitly broken, as in QCD. Other examples we study include half-supersymmetric open Wilson lines, and systems of D-branes ending on NS5-branes, which can be analyzed using worldsheet methods.

Entanglement as a Probe of Confinement

We investigate the entanglement entropy in gravity duals of confining large $N_c$ gauge theories using the proposal of arXiv:hep-th/0603001, arXiv:hep-th/0605073. Dividing one of the directions of space into a line segment of length $l$ and its complement, the entanglement entropy between the two subspaces is given by the classical action of the minimal bulk hypersurface which approaches the endpoints of the line segment at the boundary. We find that in confining backgrounds there are generally two such surfaces. One consists of two disconnected components localized at the endpoints of the line segment. The other contains a tube connecting the two components. The disconnected surface dominates the entropy for $l$ above a certain critical value $l_{\rm crit}$ while the connected one dominates below that value. The change of behavior at $l=l_{\rm crit}$ is reminiscent of the finite temperature deconfinement transition: for $l < l_{\rm crit}$ the entropy scales as $N_c^2$, while for $l > l_{\rm crit}$ as $N_c^0$. We argue that a similar transition should occur in any field theory with a Hagedorn spectrum of non-interacting bound states. The requirement that the entanglement entropy has a phase transition may be useful in constraining gravity duals of confining theories.

Stable and Metastable Vacua in Brane Constructions of SQCD

In a recent paper [1] we showed that N=1 supersymmetric QCD in the presence of certain superpotential deformations has a rich landscape of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua. In this paper we embed this theory in string theory as a low energy theory of intersecting NS and D-branes. We find that in the region of parameter space of brane configurations that can be reliably studied using classical string theory, the vacuum structure is qualitatively similar to that in the field theory regime. Effects that in field theory come from one loop corrections arise in string theory as classical gravitational effects. The brane construction provides a useful guide to the structure of stable and metastable gauge theory vacua.

Gauge Symmetry and Supersymmetry Breaking From Intersecting Branes

We study a system of intersecting NS and D-branes in type IIA string theory in R^{9,1}. We show that the 3+1 dimensional non-supersymmetric theory at the intersection has unstable vacua which are long-lived in some regions of the parameter space of brane configurations, and disappear in others. We also comment on the relation of our construction to systems of D and anti D-branes wrapped around cycles of non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds and to other related systems.

Non-Supersymmetric Deformations of Non-Critical Superstrings

We study certain supersymmetry breaking deformations of linear dilaton backgrounds in different dimensions. In some cases, the deformed theory has bulk closed strings tachyons. In other cases there are no bulk tachyons, but there are localized tachyons. The real time condensation of these localized tachyons is described by an exactly solvable worldsheet CFT. We also find some stable, non-supersymmetric backgrounds.

Accelerating Branes and the String/Black Hole Transition

String theory in Euclidean flat space with a spacelike linear dilaton contains a D1-brane which looks like a semi-infinite hairpin. In addition to its curved shape, this ``hairpin brane'' has a condensate of the open string tachyon stretched between its two sides. The tachyon smears the brane and shifts the location of its tip. The Minkowski continuation of the hairpin brane describes a D0-brane freely falling in a linear dilaton background. Effects that in Euclidean space are attributed to the tachyon condensate, give rise in the Minkowski case to a stringy smearing of the trajectory of the D-brane by an amount that grows as its acceleration increases. When the Unruh temperature of the brane reaches the Hagedorn temperature of perturbative string theory in the throat, the rolling D-brane state becomes non-normalizable. We propose that black holes in string theory exhibit similar properties. The Euclidean black hole solution has a condensate of a tachyon winding around Euclidean time. The Minkowski manifestation of this condensate is a smearing of the geometry in a layer around the horizon. As the Hawking temperature, T_{bh}, increases, the width of this layer grows. When T_{bh} reaches the Hagedorn temperature, the size of this ``smeared horizon'' diverges, and the black hole becomes non-normalizable. This provides a new point of view on the string/black hole transition.
