Hydrodynamic integrability via geometry

This paper develops a geometric approach to the theory of integrability by hydrodynamic reductions to establish an equivalence, for a large class of quasilinear systems, between hydrodynamic integrability and the existence of nets compatible with the geometry induced on the codomain of the system. This unifies and extends known results for three subclasses of such systems. The generalization is obtained by studying the algebraic geometry of the characteristic correspondence of the system, and by introducing a generalized notion of conjugate nets.

Weighted K-stability of polarized varieties and extremality of Sasaki manifolds

We use the correspondence between extremal Sasaki structures and weighted extremal Kahler metrics defined on a regular quotient of a Sasaki manifold, established by the first two authors, and Lahdili's theory of weighted K-stability in order to define a suitable notion of (relative) weighted K-stability for compact Sasaki manifolds of regular type. We show that the (relative) weighted K-stability with respect to a maximal torus is a necessary condition for the existence of a (possibly irregular) extremal Sasaki metric. We also compare weighted K-stability to the K-stability of the corresponding polarized affine cone (introduced by Collins-Szekelyhidi), and prove that they agree on the class of test configurations we consider. As a byproduct, we strengthen the obstruction to the existence of a scalar-flat Kahler cone metric from the K-semistability to the K-stability on these test configurations. We use our approach to give a characterization of the existence of a compatible extremal Sasaki structure on a principal circle bundle over an admissible ruled manifold, expressed in terms of the positivity of a single polynomial of one variable over a given interval.

The Kähler geometry of Bott manifolds

We study the Kähler geometry of stage n Bott manifolds, which can be viewed as $n$-dimensional generalizations of Hirzebruch surfaces. We show, using a simple induction argument and the generalized Calabi construction from [ACGT04,ACGT11], that any stage n Bott manifold $M_n$ admits an extremal Kähler metric. We also give necessary conditions for $M_n$ to admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. We obtain more precise results for stage 3 Bott manifolds, including in particular some interesting relations with c-projective geometry and some explicit examples of almost Kähler structures. To place these results in context, we review and develop the topology, complex geometry and symplectic geometry of Bott manifolds. In particular, we study the Kähler cone, the automorphism group and the Fano condition. We also relate the number of conjugacy classes of maximal tori in the symplectomorphism group to the number of biholomorphism classes compatible with the symplectic structure.

Integrability via geometry: dispersionless differential equations in three and four dimensions

We prove that the existence of a dispersionless Lax pair with spectral parameter for a nondegenerate hyperbolic second order partial differential equation (PDE) is equivalent to the canonical conformal structure defined by the symbol being Einstein-Weyl on any solution in 3D, and self-dual on any solution in 4D. The first main ingredient in the proof is a characteristic property for dispersionless Lax pairs. The second is the projective behaviour of the Lax pair with respect to the spectral parameter. Both are established for nondegenerate determined systems of PDEs of any order. Thus our main result applies more generally to any such PDE system whose characteristic variety is a quadric hypersurface.

The CR geometry of weighted extremal Kahler and Sasaki metrics

We establish an equivalence between conformally Einstein--Maxwell Kahler 4-manifolds (recently studied in many works) and extremal Kahler 4-manifolds (in the sense of Calabi) with nowhere vanishing scalar curvature. The corresponding pairs of Kahler metrics arise as transversal Kahler structures of Sasaki metrics compatible with the same CR structure and having commuting Sasaki--Reeb vector fields. This correspondence extends to higher dimensions using the notion of a weighted extremal Kahler metric, illuminating and uniting several explicit constructions in Kahler and Sasaki geometry. It also leads to new existence and non-existence results for extremal Sasaki metrics, suggesting a link between notions of relative weighted K-stability for a polarized variety, and relative K-stability of the Kahler cone corresponding to a Sasaki polarization.

Projective geometry and the quaternionic Feix-Kaledin construction

Starting from a complex manifold S with a real-analytic c-projective structure whose curvature has type (1,1), and a complex line bundle L with a connection whose curvature has type (1,1), we construct the twistor space Z of a quaternionic manifold M with a quaternionic circle action which contains S as a totally complex submanifold fixed by the action. This extends a construction of hypercomplex manifolds, including hyperkaehler metrics on cotangent bundles, obtained independently by B. Feix and D. Kaledin. When S is a Riemann surface, M is a self-dual conformal 4-manifold, and the quotient of M by the circle action is an Einstein-Weyl manifold with an asymptotically hyperbolic end, and our construction coincides with a construction presented by the first author in a previous paper. The extension also applies to quaternionic Kaehler manifolds with circle actions, as studied by A. Haydys and N. Hitchin.

Subriemannian metrics and the metrizability of parabolic geometries

We present the linearized metrizability problem in the context of parabolic geometries and subriemannian geometry, generalizing the metrizability problem in projective geometry studied by R. Liouville in 1889. We give a general method for linearizability and a classification of all cases with irreducible defining distribution where this method applies. These tools lead to natural subriemannian metrics on generic distributions of interest in geometric control theory.

Parabolic subalgebras, parabolic buildings and parabolic projection

Reductive (or semisimple) algebraic groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras have a rich geometry determined by their parabolic subgroups and subalgebras, which carry the structure of a building in the sense of J. Tits. We present herein an elementary approach to the geometry of parabolic subalgebras, over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero, which does not rely upon the structure theory of semisimple Lie algebras. Indeed we derive such structure theory, from root systems to the Bruhat decomposition, from the properties of parabolic subalgebras. As well as constructing the Tits building of a reductive Lie algebra, we establish a "parabolic projection" process which sends parabolic subalgebras of a reductive Lie algebra to parabolic subalgebras of a Levi subquotient. We indicate how these ideas may be used to study geometric configurations and their moduli.

C-projective geometry

We develop in detail the theory of c-projective geometry, a natural analogue of projective differential geometry adapted to complex manifolds. We realise it as a type of parabolic geometry and describe the associated Cartan or tractor connection. A Kaehler manifold gives rise to a c-projective structure and this is one of the primary motivations for its study. The existence of two or more Kaehler metrics underlying a given c-projective structure has many ramifications, which we explore in depth. As a consequence of this analysis, we prove the Yano-Obata conjecture for complete Kaehler manifolds: if such a manifold admits a one parameter group of c-projective transformations that are not affine, then it is complex projective space, equipped with a multiple of the Fubini-Study metric.

Curvature and the c-projective mobility of Kaehler metrics with hamiltonian 2-forms

The mobility of a Kaehler metric is the dimension of the space of metrics with which it is c-projectively equivalent. The mobility is at least two if and only if the Kaehler metric admits a nontrivial hamiltonian 2-form. After summarizing this relationship, we present necessary conditions for a Kaehler metric to have mobility at least three: its curvature must have nontrivial nullity at every point. Using the local classification of Kaehler metrics with hamiltonian 2-forms, we describe explicitly the Kaehler metrics with mobility at least three and hence show that the nullity condition on the curvature is also sufficient, up to some degenerate exceptions. In an Appendix, we explain how the classification may be related, generically, to the holonomy of a complex cone metric.

Integrable Background Geometries

This work has its origins in an attempt to describe systematically the integrable geometries and gauge theories in dimensions one to four related to twistor theory. In each such dimension, there is a nondegenerate integrable geometric structure, governed by a nonlinear integrable differential equation, and each solution of this equation determines a background geometry on which, for any Lie group $G$, an integrable gauge theory is defined. In four dimensions, the geometry is selfdual conformal geometry and the gauge theory is selfdual Yang-Mills theory, while the lower-dimensional structures are nondegenerate (i.e., non-null) reductions of this. Any solution of the gauge theory on a $k$-dimensional geometry, such that the gauge group $H$ acts transitively on an $\ell$-manifold, determines a $(k+\ell)$-dimensional geometry ($k+\ell\leqslant4$) fibering over the $k$-dimensional geometry with $H$ as a structure group. In the case of an $\ell$-dimensional group $H$ acting on itself by the regular representation, all $(k+\ell)$-dimensional geometries with symmetry group $H$ are locally obtained in this way. This framework unifies and extends known results about dimensional reductions of selfdual conformal geometry and the selfdual Yang-Mills equation, and provides a rich supply of constructive methods. In one dimension, generalized Nahm equations provide a uniform description of four pole isomonodromic deformation problems, and may be related to the ${\rm SU}(\infty)$ Toda and dKP equations via a hodograph transformation. In two dimensions, the ${\rm Diff}(S^1)$ Hitchin equation is shown to be equivalent to the hyperCR Einstein-Weyl equation, while the ${\rm SDiff}(Σ^2)$ Hitchin equation leads to a Euclidean analogue of Plebanski's heavenly equations.

Selfdual 4-Manifolds, Projective Surfaces, and the Dunajski-West Construction

I present a construction of real or complex selfdual conformal 4-manifolds (of signature (2,2) in the real case) from a natural gauge field equation on a real or complex projective surface, the gauge group being the group of diffeomorphisms of a real or complex 2-manifold. The 4-manifolds obtained are characterized by the existence of a foliation by selfdual null surfaces of a special kind. The classification by Dunajski and West of selfdual conformal 4-manifolds with a null conformal vector field is the special case in which the gauge group reduces to the group of diffeomorphisms commuting with a vector field, and I analyse the presence of compatible scalar-flat Kähler, hypercomplex and hyperkähler structures from a gauge-theoretic point of view. In an appendix, I discuss the twistor theory of projective surfaces, which is used in the body of the paper, but is also of independent interest.

Ambikaehler geometry, ambitoric surfaces and Einstein 4-orbifolds

We give an explicit local classification of conformally equivalent but oppositely oriented Kaehler metrics on a 4-manifold which are toric with respect to a common 2-torus action. In the generic case, these structures have an intriguing local geometry depending on a quadratic polynomial and two arbitrary functions of one variable, these two functions being explicit degree 4 polynomials when the Kaehler metrics are extremal (in the sense of Calabi). One motivation for and application of this result is an explicit local description of Einstein 4-manifolds which are hermitian with respect to either orientation. This can be considered as a riemannian analogue of a result in General Relativity due to R. Debever, N. Kamran, and R. McLenaghan, and is a natural extension of the classification of selfdual Einstein hermitian 4-manifolds, obtained independently by R. Bryant and the first and third authors. We discuss toric compactifications of these metrics on orbifolds and provide infinite discrete families of compact toric extremal Kaehler orbifolds. Our examples include Bach-flat Kaehler orbifolds which are conformal to complete smooth Einstein metrics on an open subset. We illustrate how these examples fit with recent conjectures relating the existence of extremal toric metrics to various notions of stability.

Ambitoric geometry I: Einstein metrics and extremal ambikaehler structures

We present a local classification of conformally equivalent but oppositely oriented 4-dimensional Kaehler metrics which are toric with respect to a common 2-torus action. In the generic case, these "ambitoric" structures have an intriguing local geometry depending on a quadratic polynomial q and arbitrary functions A and B of one variable. We use this description to classify Einstein 4-metrics which are hermitian with respect to both orientations, as well a class of solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations including riemannian analogues of the Plebanski-Demianski metrics. Our classification can be viewed as a riemannian analogue of a result in relativity due to R. Debever, N. Kamran, and R. McLenaghan, and is a natural extension of the classification of selfdual Einstein hermitian 4-manifolds, obtained independently by R. Bryant and the first and third authors. These Einstein metrics are precisely the ambitoric structures with vanishing Bach tensor, and thus have the property that the associated toric Kaehler metrics are extremal (in the sense of E. Calabi). Our main results also classify the latter, providing new examples of explicit extremal Kaehler metrics. For both the Einstein-Maxwell and the extremal ambitoric structures, A and B are quartic polynomials, but with different conditions on the coefficients. In the sequel to this paper we consider global examples, and use them to resolve the existence problem for extremal Kaehler metrics on toric 4-orbifolds with second betti number b2=2.

Ambitoric geometry II: Extremal toric surfaces and Einstein 4-orbifolds

We provide an explicit resolution of the existence problem for extremal Kaehler metrics on toric 4-orbifolds M with second Betti number b2(M)=2. More precisely we show that M admits such a metric if and only if its rational Delzant polytope (which is a labelled quadrilateral) is K-polystable in the relative, toric sense (as studied by S. Donaldson, E. Legendre, G. Szekelyhidi et al.). Furthermore, in this case, the extremal Kaehler metric is ambitoric, i.e., compatible with a conformally equivalent, oppositely oriented toric Kaehler metric, which turns out to be extremal as well. These results provide a computational test for the K-stability of labelled quadrilaterals. Extremal ambitoric structures were classified locally in Part I of this work, but herein we only use the straightforward fact that explicit Kaehler metrics obtained there are extremal, and the identification of Bach-flat (conformally Einstein) examples among them. Using our global results, the latter yield countably infinite families of compact toric Bach-flat Kaehler orbifolds, including examples which are globally conformally Einstein, and examples which are conformal to complete smooth Einstein metrics on an open subset, thus extending the work of many authors.

Conformal submanifold geometry I-III

In Part I, we develop the notions of a Moebius structure and a conformal Cartan geometry, establish an equivalence between them; we use them in Part II to study submanifolds of conformal manifolds in arbitrary dimension and codimension. We obtain Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations and a conformal Bonnet theorem characterizing immersed submanifolds of the conformal n-sphere. These methods are applied in Part III to study constrained Willmore surfaces, isothermic surfaces, Guichard surfaces and conformally-flat submanifolds with flat normal bundle, and their spectral deformations, in arbitrary codimension. The high point of these applications is a unified theory of Moebius-flat submanifolds, which include Guichard surfaces and conformally flat hypersurfaces.

Extremal Kähler metrics on projective bundles over a curve

Let $M=P(E)$ be the complex manifold underlying the total space of the projectivization of a holomorphic vector bundle $E \to Σ$ over a compact complex curve $Σ$ of genus $\ge 2$. Building on ideas of Fujiki, we prove that $M$ admits a Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature if and only if $E$ is polystable. We also address the more general existence problem of extremal Kähler metrics on such bundles and prove that the splitting of $E$ as a direct sum of stable subbundles is necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of extremal Kähler metrics in sufficiently small Kähler classes. The methods used to prove the above results apply to a wider class of manifolds, called {\it rigid toric bundles over a semisimple base}, which are fibrations associated to a principal torus bundle over a product of constant scalar curvature Kähler manifolds with fibres isomorphic to a given toric Kähler variety. We discuss various ramifications of our approach to this class of manifolds.

Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry, III Compact examples

This paper has been withdrawn in order to replace it by two separate submissions: 1. Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry III: Extremal metrics and stability, math.DG/0511118; 2. Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry IV: Weakly Bochner-flat Kahler manifolds, math.DG/0511119. As the titles indicate, the first paper covers the parts of this withdrawn submission concerning extremal Kahler metrics, while the second one deals the weakly Bochner-flat Kahler metrics. However, the material for the first paper has been substantially revised and extended with several new results. 1. The exposition has been expanded and clarified, and some technical errors and missing arguments have been corrected. 2. A new computation of the modified K-energy is used to obtain a characterization of the admissible Kahler classes which contain an extremal Kahler metric. In particular, these results complete the classification of extremal Kahler metrics on ruled surfaces. 3. The existence of extremal Kahler metrics is related to the notion of relative K-stability leading in particular to some examples of projective varieties which are destabilized by a non-algebraic degeneration. We believe that these results add considerable interest to our work, and go far beyond the original paper, which is why we have chosen to withdraw this paper and post the replacements as new submissions.
