The omnidirectional trace in H 1 ($\Omega$)

We first prove that all the functions in L 2 whose directional derivative is in L 2 have a directional trace on the boundary of any open bounded domain, without assumptions on its regularity. This enables us to define the omnidirectional trace of the elements of the Sobolev space H 1 ($\Omega$) for which there exists a function on the boundary that is almost everywhere equal, with respect to the directional measure, to the directional trace, regardless of the direction. The set of all these elements of H 1 ($\Omega$), denoted by H 1 tr ($\Omega$), is shown to be closed, and to always contain the closure in H 1 ($\Omega$) of the set C 0 ($\Omega$)$\cap$ H 1 ($\Omega$) (it is always equal to this set in the 1D case, and can be strictly greater in higher dimensions). The omnidirectional trace always satisfies an integration-by-parts formula, which combines the values of the trace on opposite points of the boundary. Examples show that this notion enables the resolution of variational problems involving the values at the boundary of the domain.

Trace operator on H 1 ($\Omega$) for general open bounded domains

In the case of any bounded open set $\Omega$ $\subset$ R d with boundary $\partial$$\Omega$, we first construct a directional trace in any direction $\theta$ of the unit sphere, for any u $\in$ L 2 ($\Omega$) whose the directional derivative $\partial$ $\theta$ u in the direction $\theta$ belongs to L 2 ($\Omega$). This directional trace is shown to belong to L 2 ($\partial$$\Omega$, $\mu$ $\theta$ ), where $\mu$ $\theta$ is a measure supported by the closure of all points of $\partial$$\Omega$ which are the extremity of an open segment directed by $\theta$, included in $\Omega$. This trace enables an integration by parts formula. We then show that the set H 1 tr ($\Omega$) containing the elements of H 1 ($\Omega$) whose the directional trace does not depend on $\theta$ is closed. It therefore contains the closure of H 1 ($\Omega$) $\cap$ C 0 ($\Omega$) in H 1 ($\Omega$). Examples where H 1 tr ($\Omega$) = H 1 ($\Omega$) and H 1 tr ($\Omega$) __ = H 1 ($\Omega$) are provided.

Convergence of the incremental projection method using conforming approximations

We prove the convergence of an incremental projection numerical scheme for the time-dependent incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, without any regularity assumption on the weak solution. The velocity and the pressure are discretised in conforming spaces, whose the compatibility is ensured by the existence of an interpolator for regular functions which preserves approximate divergence free properties. Owing to a priori estimates, we get the existence and uniqueness of the discrete approximation. Compactness properties are then proved, relying on a Lions-like lemma for time translate estimates. It is then possible to show the convergence of the approximate solution to a weak solution of the problem. The construction of the interpolator is detailed in the case of the lowest degree Taylor-Hood finite element.

Convergence of the fully discrete incremental projection scheme for incompressible flows

The present paper addresses the convergence of a first order in time incremental projection scheme for the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to a weak solution, without any assumption of existence or regularity assumptions on the exact solution. We prove the convergence of the approximate solutions obtained by the semi-discrete scheme and a fully discrete scheme using a staggered finite volume scheme on non uniform rectangular meshes. Some first a priori estimates on the approximate solutions yield the existence. Compactness arguments, relying on these estimates, together with some estimates on the translates of the discrete time derivatives, are then developed to obtain convergence (up to the extraction of a subsequence), when the time step tends to zero in the semi-discrete scheme and when the space and time steps tend to zero in the fully discrete scheme; the approximate solutions are thus shown to converge to a limit function which is then shown to be a weak solution to the continuous problem by passing to the limit in these schemes.

Weighted p--Laplace approximation of linear and quasi-linear elliptic problems with measure data

We approximate the solution to some linear and degenerate quasi-linear problem involving a linear elliptic operator (like the semi-discrete in time implicit Euler approximation of Richards and Stefan equations) with measure right-hand side and heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion matrix. This approximation is obtained through the addition of a weighted p--Laplace term. A well chosen diffeomorphism between R and (--1, 1) is used for the estimates of the approximated solution, and is involved in the above weight. We show that this approximation converges to a weak sense of the problem for general right-hand-side, and to the entropy solution in the case where the right-hand-side is in L 1 .

On some new results on anisotropic singular perturbations of second order elliptic operators

In this article, we deal with some problems involving a class of singularly perturbed elliptic operator. We prove the asymptotic preserving of a general Galerkin method associated to a semilinear problem. We use a particular Galerkin approximation to estimate the convergence rate on the whole domain, for the linear problem. Finally, we study the asymptotic behavior of the semigroup generated.

Convergence of the MAC scheme for the compressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations

We prove in this paper the convergence of the Marker and Cell (MAC) scheme for the discretization of the steady state compressible and isentropic Navier-Stokes equations on two or three-dimensional Cartesian grids. Existence of a solution to the scheme is proven, followed by estimates on approximate solutions, which yield the convergence of the approximate solutions, up to a subsequence, and in an appropriate sense. We then prove that the limit of the approximate solutions satisfies the mass and momentum balance equations, as well as the equation of state, which is the main difficulty of this study.

Existence of weak solutions for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with entropy transport

We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system with variable entropy. The pressure is a nonlinear function of the density and the entropy/potential temperature which, unlike in the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, satisfies only the transport equation. We provide existence results within three alternative weak formulations of the corresponding classical problem. Our constructions hold for the optimal range of the adiabatic coefficients from the point of view of the nowadays existence theory.

Error estimates for a numerical method for the compressible Navier-Stokes system on sufficiently smooth domains

We derive an a priori error estimate for the numerical solution obtained by time and space discretization by the finite volume/finite element method of the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations. The numerical solution on a convenient polyhedral domain approximating a sufficiently smooth bounded domain is compared with an exact solution of the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations with a bounded density. The result is unconditional in the sense that there are no assumed bounds on the numerical solution.

Error estimates for a numerical approximation to the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations

We present here a general method based on the investigation of the relative energy of the system, that provides an unconditional error estimate for the approximate solution of the barotropic Navier Stokes equations obtained by time and space discretization. We use this methodology to derive an error estimate for a specific DG/finite element scheme for which the convergence was proved in [27]. This is an extended version of the paper submitted to IMAJNA.
