Diagonalization of the Toda flow for arbitrary isospectral symmetric matrices

We construct coordinates on orthogonal conjugacy classes of traceless real symmetric matrices with arbitrary spectrum (the isospectral manifold) that diagonalize the non-periodic Toda vector field. The coordinates, defined on a neighborhood of any diagonal matrix decouple the Toda vector field into a sum of multiples of the Euler vector field in $\mathbb{R}$. The domain of each set of coordinates is dense and their union covers the isospectral manifold. The construction relies on a new matrix factorization which is of independent interest.

The topology of tridiagonal isospectral sets

We describe the topology of the set of tridiagonal symmetric real matrices with fixed non-simple spectrum. The tridiagonal isospectral set is not a submanifold of the corresponding orthogonal conjugacy class, but a collection of submanifolds which intersect cleanly. We show that the tridiagonal isospectral set is an aspherical space and that its Betti numbers are combinatorial numbers. This generalizes to arbitrary spectrum constructions and results known for simple spectrum. We also extend these results to split real semisimple Lie algebras.

Poisson Manifolds of Compact Types with an Appendix by Joshua Mundinger

We develop the theory of Poisson and Dirac manifolds of compact types, a broad generalization in Poisson and Dirac geometry of compact Lie algebras and Lie groups. We establish key structural results, including local normal forms, canonical stratifications, and a Weyl type resolution, which provides a way to resolve the singularities of the original structure. These tools allow us to show that the leaf space of such manifolds is an integral affine orbifold and to define their Weyl group. This group is a Coxeter group acting on the orbifold universal cover of the leaf space by integral affine transformations, and one can associate to it Weyl chambers, reflection hyperplanes, etc. We further develop a Duistermaat-Heckman theory for Poisson manifolds of s-proper type, proving the linear variation of cohomology of leafwise symplectic form and establishing a Weyl integration formula. As an application, we show that every Poisson manifold of compact type is necessarily regular. We conclude the paper with a list of open problems.

Diagonalization of the Toda flow on conjugacy classes of matrices with simple spectrum

We construct coordinates on conjugacy classes of traceless complex matrices with simple spectrum that diagonalize the non-periodic Toda vector field. By this we mean that the coordinates, defined on an open and dense neighborhood of any diagonal matrix in the conjugacy class, decouple the Toda vector field into a sum of multiples of the Euler and rotational vector field in $\mathbb{C}$. Using Lie theoretic methods, we extend this construction from $\mathfrak{sl}_\mathbb{C}$ to arbitrary complex semisimple Lie algebras and to their real forms

Dirac products and concurring Dirac structures

We discuss in this note two dual canonical operations on Dirac structures $L$ and $R$ -- the \emph{tangent product} $L \star R$ and the \emph{cotangent product} $L \circledast R$. Our first result gives an explicit description of the leaves of $L \star R$ in terms of those of $L$ and $R$, surprisingly ruling out the pathologies which plague general ``induced Dirac structures''. In contrast to the tangent product, the more novel contangent product $L \circledast R$ need not be Dirac even if smooth. When it is, we say that $L$ and $R$ \emph{concur}. Concurrence captures commuting Poison structures, refines the \emph{Dirac pairs} of Dorfman and Kosmann-Schwarzbach, and it is our proposal as the natural notion of ``compatibility'' between Dirac structures. The rest of the paper is devoted to illustrating the usefulness of tangent- and cotangent products in general, and the notion of concurrence in particular. Dirac products clarify old constructions in Poisson geometry, characterize Dirac structures which can be pushed forward by a smooth map, and mandate a version of a local normal form. Magri and Morosi's $PΩ$-condition and Vaisman's notion of two-forms complementary to a Poisson structures are found to be instances of concurrence, as is the setting for the Frobenius-Nirenberg theorem. We conclude the paper with an interpretation in the style of Magri and Morosi of generalized complex structures which concur with their conjugates.

Coregular submanifolds and Poisson submersions

We analyze \emph{submersions with Poisson fibres}. These are submersions whose total space carries a Poisson structure, on which the ambient Poisson structure pulls back, as a Dirac structure, to Poisson structures on each individual fibre. Our ``Poisson-Dirac viewpoint'' is prompted by natural examples of Poisson submersions with Poisson fibers -- in toric geometry and Poisson-Lie groups -- whose analysis was not possible using the existing tools in the Poisson literature. The first part of the paper studies the Poisson-Dirac perspective of inducing Poisson structures on submanifolds. This is a rich landscape, in which subtle behaviours abound -- as illustrated by a surprising ``jumping phenomenon'' concerning the complex relation between the induced and the ambient symplectic foliations, which we discovered here. These pathologies, however, are absent from the well-behaved and abundant class of \emph{coregular} submanifolds, with which we are mostly concerned here. The second part of the paper studies Poisson submersions with Poisson fibres -- the natural Poisson generalization of flat symplectic bundles. These Poisson submersions have coregular Poisson-Dirac fibres, and behave functorially with respect to such submanifolds. We discuss the subtle collective behavior of the Poisson fibers of such Poisson fibrations, and explain their relation to pencils of Poisson structures. The third and final part applies the theory developed to Poisson submersions with Poisson fibres which arise in Lie theory. We also show that such submersions are a convenient setting for the associated bundle construction, and we illustrate this by producing new Poisson structures with a finite number of symplectic leaves. Some of the points in the paper being fairly new, we illustrate the many fine issues that appear with an abundance of (counter-)examples.

Canonical domains for coadjoint orbits

This paper describes two real analytic symplectomorphisms defined on appropriate dense open subsets of any coadjoint orbit of a compact semisimple Lie algebra. The first symplectomorphism sends the open dense subset to a bounded subset of a standard cotangent bundle. The second symplectomorphism has target a bounded subset of a hyperbolic coadjoint orbit of an associated non-compact semi-simple Lie algebra. Therefore, coadjoint orbits of compact Lie algebras are symplectic compactifications of domains of cotangent bundles, and are in symplectic duality with hyperbolic orbits of non-compact semisimple Lie algebras.

Linearizing Toda and SVD flows on large phase spaces of matrices with real spectrum

We consider different phase spaces for the Toda flows and the less familiar SVD flows. For the Toda flow, we handle symmetric and non-symmetric matrices with real simple eigenvalues, possibly with a given profile. Profiles encode, for example, band matrices and Hessenberg matrices. For the SVD flow, we assume simplicity of the singular values. In all cases, an open cover is constructed, as are corresponding charts to Euclidean space. The charts linearize the flows, converting it into a linear differential system with constant coefficients and diagonal matrix. A variant construction transform the flows into uniform straight line motion. Since limit points belong to the phase space, asymptotic behavior becomes a local issue. The constructions rely only on basic facts of linear algebra, making no use of symplectic geometry.

Non-exactness of toric Poisson structures

We prove that a Poisson structure on a projective toric variety which is invariant by the torus action and whose symplectic leaves are the torus orbits is not exact. This is deduced from a geometric criterion for non-exactness of Poisson structures with a finite number of symplectic leaves.

An atlas adapted to the Toda flow

We introduce an atlas adapted to the Toda flow on the manifold of full flags of any non-compact real semisimple Lie algebra, and on its Hessenberg-type submanifolds. In our local coordinates the Toda flow becomes linear. We use these new coordinates to show that the Toda flow on the manifold of full flags is Morse-Smale, which generalizes the main result of \cite{CSS1} to arbitrary non-compact real semisimple Lie algebras. As a byproduct we describe new features of classical constructions in matrix theory.

PDEs from matrices with orthogonal columns

We discuss a system of third order PDEs for strictly convex smooth functions on domains of Euclidean space. We argue that it may be understood as a closure of sorts of the first order prolongation of a family of second order PDEs. We describe explicitly its real analytic solutions and all the solutions which satisfy a genericity condition; we also describe a family of non-generic solutions which has an application to Poisson geometry and Kahler structures on toric varieties. Our methods are geometric: we use the theory of Hessian metrics and symmetric spaces to link the analysis of the system of PDEs with properties of the manifold of matrices with orthogonal columns.

A Poisson manifold of strong compact type

We construct a corank one Poisson manifold which is of strong compact type, i.e., the associated Lie algebroid structure on its cotangent bundle is integrable, annd the source 1-conected (symplectic) integration is compact. The construction relies on the moduli of marked K3 surfaces.

The foliated Lefschetz hyperplane theorem

A foliation $(M,\mathcal{F})$ is said to be $2$--calibrated if it admits a closed 2-form $ω$ making each leaf symplectic. By using approximately holomorphic techniques, a sequence $W_k$ of $2$--calibrated submanifolds of codimension--$2$ can be found for $(M, \mathcal{F}, ω)$. Our main result says that the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem holds for the pairs $(F, F \cap W_k)$, with $F$ any leaf of $\mathcal{F}$. This is applied to draw important consequences on the transverse geometry of such foliations.

Semisimple coadjoint orbits and cotangent bundles

Semisimple (co)adjoint orbits through real hyperbolic elements are well-known to be symplectomorphic to cotangent bundles. We provide a new proof of this fact based on elementary results on both Lie theory and symplectic geometry. Our proof establishes a new connection between the Iwasawa horospherical projection and the symplectic geometry of real hyperbolic (co)adjoint orbits.

Nontrivial bundles of coadjoint orbits over $S^2$

Let $G$ be a compact connected semisimple Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Let $\mathcal{O}\subset\mathfrak{g}^*$ be a coadjoint orbit. The action of $G$ on $\mathcal{O}$ induces a morphism $ρ:G\to \mathrm{Homeo}(\mathcal{O})$. We prove that the induced map $π_1(ρ):π_1(G)\toπ_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(\mathcal{O}))$ is injective. This strengthens a theorem of McDuff and Tolman (conjectured by Weinstein in 1989) according to which the analogous map $G\to\mathrm{Ham}(\mathcal{O})$ is injective on fundamental groups, where $\mathrm{Ham}(\mathcal{O})$ is the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the standard symplectic structure on $\mathcal{O}$. To prove our theorem we associate to every nontrivial element of $π_1(G)$ a bundle over $S^2$ with fiber $\mathcal{O}$, using the standard patching construction. We then prove that the resulting bundle is topologically nontrivial by studying its cohomology. For this, we prove that it suffices to consider the case in which $G$ is simple and $\mathcal{O}$ is a minimal orbit, and then we prove our result for simple $G$ and minimal orbit $\mathcal{O}$ in a case by case analysis; the proof for the exceptional groups $E_6$ and $E_7$ relies on computer calculations, while all the other ones are addressed by hand. A basic tool in some of our computations is a generalization of Chevalley's formula to bundles of coadjoint orbits over $S^2$ that we prove in this paper.

Zeroth Poisson homology, foliated cohomology and perfect Poisson manifolds

We prove that for regular Poisson manifolds, the zeroth homology group is isomorphic to the top foliated cohomology group and we give some applications. In particular, we show that for regular unimodular Poisson manifolds top Poisson and foliated cohomology groups are isomorphic. Inspired by the symplectic setting, we define what is a perfect Poisson manifold. We use these Poisson homology computations to provide families of perfect Poisson manifolds.

Weakly Hamiltonian actions

In this paper we generalize constructions of non-commutative integrable systems to the context of weakly Hamiltonian actions on Poisson manifolds. In particular we prove that abelian weakly Hamiltonian actions on symplectic manifolds split into Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian factors, and explore generalizations in the Poisson setting.
