Unambiguous Formalism for Higher-Order Lagrangian Field Theories

The aim of this paper is to propose an unambiguous intrinsic formalism for higher-order field theories which avoids the arbitrariness in the generalization of the conventional description of field theories, which implies the existence of different Cartan forms and Legendre transformations. We propose a differential-geometric setting for the dynamics of a higher-order field theory, based on the Skinner and Rusk formalism for mechanics. This approach incorporates aspects of both, the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian description, since the field equations are formulated using the Lagrangian on a higher-order jet bundle and the canonical multisymplectic form on its dual. As both of these objects are uniquely defined, the Skinner-Rusk approach has the advantage that it does not suffer from the arbitrariness in conventional descriptions. The result is that we obtain a unique and global intrinsic version of the Euler-Lagrange equations for higher-order field theories. Several examples illustrate our construction.

Variational Constrained Mechanics on Lie Affgebroids

In this paper we discuss variational constrained mechanics (vakonomic mechanics) on Lie affgebroids. We obtain the dynamical equations and the aff-Poisson bracket associated with a vakonomic system on a Lie affgebroid ${\mathcal A}$. We devote special attention to the particular case when the nonholonomic constraints are given by an affine subbundle of ${\mathcal A}$ and we discuss the variational character of the theory. Finally, we apply the results obtained to several examples.

Geometric aspects of nonholonomic field theories

A geometric model for nonholonomic Lagrangian field theory is studied. The multisymplectic approach to such a theory as well as the corresponding Cauchy formalism are discussed. It is shown that in both formulations, the relevant equations for the constrained system can be recovered by a suitable projection of the equations for the underlying free (i.e. unconstrained) Lagrangian system.

A Generalization of Chetaev's Principle for a Class of Higher Order Non-holonomic Constraints

The constraint distribution in non-holonomic mechanics has a double role. On one hand, it is a kinematic constraint, that is, it is a restriction on the motion itself. On the other hand, it is also a restriction on the allowed variations when using D'Alembert's Principle to derive the equations of motion. We will show that many systems of physical interest where D'Alembert's Principle does not apply can be conveniently modeled within the general idea of the Principle of Virtual Work by the introduction of both kinematic constraints and variational constraints as being independent entities. This includes, for example, elastic rolling bodies and pneumatic tires. Also, D'Alembert's Principle and Chetaev's Principle fall into this scheme. We emphasize the geometric point of view, avoiding the use of local coordinates, which is the appropriate setting for dealing with questions of global nature, like reduction.

Geometric description of vakonomic and nonholonomic dynamics. Comparison of solutions

We treat the vakonomic dynamics with general constraints within a new geometric framework which will be appropriate to study optimal control problems. We compare our formulation with Vershik-Gershkovich one in the case of linear constraints. We show how nonholonomic mechanics also admits a new geometrical description wich enables us to develop an algorithm of comparison between the solutions of both dynamics. Some examples illustrating the theory are treated.
