Gauge/string duality applied to heavy ion collisions: Limitations, insights and prospects

Over the last decade a fruitful interplay has developed between analyses of strongly coupled non-abelian plasmas via the gauge/string duality and the phenomenology of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy ion collisions. I review the reasons why the gauge/string duality is not a precision tool for QCD physics at present, with emphasis on conceptual issues. I then argue that, nevertheless, the duality can provide valuable insights at both the quantitive and the qualitative level. I illustrate this with a few examples, and conclude with a brief discussion of future prospects.

Towards holographic walking from N=4 super Yang-Mills

We propose that a holographic description of `walking' behaviour, namely quasi-conformal dynamics relevant for technicolor models, can be obtained from relevant deformations of N=4 super Yang-Mills. We consider deformations which drive the theory close to the N=1 Leigh-Strassler fixed point, eventually deviating from it in the deep IR. We use the Pilch-Warner dual supergravity description of the flow between the N=4 and the N=1 fixed points to focus on observables that only require knowledge of the walking region. These include large anomalous dimensions of quark bilinear operators, which we study via probe D7-branes. We also make a first attempt at describing the theory beyond the walking region by introducing an infrared cut-off, in the spirit of hard-wall models. In this case we find a light, dilaton-like scalar state, but whether this mode persists in the exact theory remains an open question.

Cherenkov mesons as in-medium quark energy loss

We recently showed that a heavy quark moving sufficiently fast through a quark-gluon plasma may lose energy by Cherenkov-radiating mesons [1]. Here we review our previous holographic calculation of the energy loss in N=4 Super Yang-Mills and extend it to longitudinal vector mesons and scalar mesons. We also discuss phenomenological implications for heavy-ion collision experiments. Although the Cherenkov energy loss is an O(1/Nc) effect, a ballpark estimate yields a value of dE/dx for Nc=3 which is comparable to that of other mechanisms.

A New Mechanism of Quark Energy Loss

We show that a heavy quark moving sufficiently fast through a quark-gluon plasma may lose energy by Cherenkov-radiating mesons. We demonstrate that this takes place in all strongly coupled, large-Nc plasmas with a gravity dual. The energy loss is exactly calculable in these models despite being an O(1/Nc)-effect. We discuss phenomenological implications for heavy-ion collision experiments.

Prediction of a Photon Peak in Heavy Ion Collisions

We show that if a flavour-less vector meson remains bound after deconfinement, and if its limiting velocity in the quark-gluon plasma is subluminal, then this meson produces a distinct peak in the spectrum of thermal photons emitted by the plasma. We also demonstrate that this effect is a universal property of all strongly coupled, large-Nc plasmas with a gravity dual. For the J/psi the corresponding peak lies between 3 and 5 GeV and could be observed at LHC.

Holographic phase transitions at finite chemical potential

Recently holographic techniques have been used to study the thermal properties of N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory, with gauge group SU(Nc) and coupled to Nf << Nc flavours of fundamental matter, at large Nc and large 't Hooft coupling. Here we consider the phase diagram as a function of temperature and baryon chemical potential mu. For fixed mu < Nc Mq there is a line of first order thermal phase transitions separating a region with vanishing baryon density and one with nonzero density. For fixed mu > Nc Mq there is no phase transition as a function of the temperature and the baryon density is always nonzero. We also compare the present results for the grand canonical ensemble with those for canonical ensemble in which the baryon density is held fixed [1].

Bright branes for strongly coupled plasmas

We use holographic techniques to study photon production in a class of finite temperature, strongly coupled, large-Nc SU(Nc) quark-gluon plasmas with Nf << Nc quark flavours. Our results are valid to leading order in the electromagnetic coupling constant but non-perturbatively in the SU(Nc) interactions. The spectral function of electromagnetic currents and other related observables exhibit an interesting structure as a function of the photon frequency and the quark mass. We discuss possible implications for heavy ion collision experiments.

String Theory and Quantum Chromodynamics

I review recent progress on the connection between string theory and quantum chromodynamics in the context of the gauge/gravity duality. Emphasis is placed on conciseness and conceptual aspects rather than on technical details. Topics covered include the large-Nc limit of gauge theories, the gravitational description of gauge theory thermodynamics and hydrodynamics, and confinement/deconfinement thermal phase transitions.

Thermodynamics of the brane

The holographic dual of a finite-temperature gauge theory with a small number of flavours typically contains D-brane probes in a black hole background. We have recently shown that these systems undergo a first order phase transition characterised by a `melting' of the mesons. Here we extend our analysis of the thermodynamics of these systems by computing their free energy, entropy and energy densities, as well as the speed of sound. We also compute the meson spectrum for brane embeddings outside the horizon and find that tachyonic modes appear where this phase is expected to be unstable from thermodynamic considerations.

Holographic phase transitions at finite baryon density

We use holographic techniques to study SU(Nc) super Yang-Mills theory coupled to Nf << Nc flavours of fundamental matter at finite temperature and baryon density. We focus on four dimensions, for which the dual description consists of Nf D7-branes in the background of Nc black D3-branes, but our results apply in other dimensions as well. A non-zero chemical potential mu or baryon number density n is introduced via a nonvanishing worldvolume gauge field on the D7-branes. Ref. [1] identified a first order phase transition at zero density associated with `melting' of the mesons. This extends to a line of phase transitions for small n, which terminates at a critical point at finite n. Investigation of the D7-branes' thermodynamics reveals that (d mu / dn)_T <0 in a small region of the phase diagram, indicating an instability. We comment on a possible new phase which may appear in this region.

Holographic Viscosity of Fundamental Matter

A holographic dual of a finite-temperature SU(N_c) gauge theory with a small number of flavours N_f << N_c typically contains D-branes in a black hole background. By considering the backreaction of the branes, we demonstrate that, to leading order in N_f/N_c, the viscosity to entropy ratio in these theories saturates the conjectured universal bound eta/s >= 1/4π. The contribution of the fundamental matter eta_fund is therefore enhanced at strong 't Hooft coupling lambda; for example, eta_fund ~ lambda N_c N_f T^3 in four dimensions. Other transport coefficients are analogously enhanced. These results hold with or without a baryon number chemical potential.

Holographic Phase Transitions with Fundamental Matter

The holographic dual of a finite-temperature gauge theory with a small number of flavours typically contains D-brane probes in a black hole background. At low temperature the branes sit outside the black hole and the meson spectrum is discrete and possesses a mass gap. As the temperature increases the branes approach a critical solution. Eventually they fall into the horizon and a phase transition occurs. In the new phase the meson spectrum is continuous and gapless. At large N and large 't Hooft coupling, this phase transition is always of first order, and in confining theories with heavy quarks it occurs at a temperature higher than the deconfinement temperature for the glue.

An Open String Landscape

The effect of fluxes on open string moduli is studied by analyzing the constraints imposed by supersymmetry on D-branes in type IIB flux backgrounds. We show that generically the conditions of supersymmetry cannot be maintained when moving along the geometrical moduli space of the brane, so that open string moduli are lifted. We argue that there is a disconnected and discrete set of supersymmetric solutions to the open string equations of motion, which extends the familiar closed string landscape to the open string sector.

Oscillator Level for Black Holes and Black Rings

Microscopic calculations of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of supersymmetric black holes in string theory are typically based on the application to a dual 2D CFT of Cardy's formula, S=2π\sqrt{c q /6}, where `c' is the central charge and `q' is the oscillator level. In the CFT, q is non-trivially related to the total momentum. We identify a Komar integral that equals q when evaluated at the horizon, and the total momentum when evaluated at asymptotic infinity, thus providing a gravitational dual of the CFT result.

Supersymmetric 4D Rotating Black Holes from 5D Black Rings

We present supersymmetric solutions describing black holes with non-vanishing angular momentum in four dimensional asymptotically flat space. The solutions are obtained by Kaluza-Klein reduction of five-dimensional supersymmetric black rings wrapped on the fiber of a Taub-NUT space. We show that in the four-dimensional description the singularity of the nut can be hidden behind a regular black hole event horizon and thereby obtain an explicit example of a non-static multi-black hole solution in asymptotically flat four dimensions.

Supersymmetric black rings and three-charge supertubes

We present supergravity solutions for 1/8-supersymmetric black supertubes with three charges and three dipoles. Their reduction to five dimensions yields supersymmetric black rings with regular horizons and two independent angular momenta. The general solution contains seven independent parameters and provides the first example of non-uniqueness of supersymmetric black holes. In ten dimensions, the solutions can be realized as D1-D5-P black supertubes. We also present a worldvolume construction of a supertube that exhibits three dipoles explicitly. This description allows an arbitrary cross-section but captures only one of the angular momenta.

A surprising new seven-parameter supersymmetric black ring solution of five-dimensional supergravity has recently been discovered. In this paper, M-theory is used to give an exact microscopic accounting of its entropy.

The Holographic Life of the eta'

In the string holographic dual of large-N_c QCD with N_f flavours of Kruczenski et al, the eta' meson is massless at infinite N_c and dual to a collective fluctuation of N_f D6-brane probes in a supergravity background. Here we identify the string diagrams responsible for the generation of a mass of order N_f/N_c, consistent with the Witten-Veneziano formula, and show that the supregravity limit of these diagrams corresponds to mixings with pseudoscalar glueballs. We argue that the dependence on the theta-angle in the supergravity description occurs only through the combination theta + 2 \sqrt{N_f} eta' / f_pi, as dictated by the U(1) anomaly. We provide a quantitative test by computing the linear term in the eta' potential in two independent ways, with perfect agreement.
