Hölder continuity of the solutions to a class of SPDEs arising from multidimensional superprocesses in random environment

We consider a $d$-dimensional branching particle system in a random environment. Suppose that the initial measures converge weakly to a measure with bounded density. Under the Mytnik-Sturm branching mechanism, we prove that the corresponding empirical measure $X_t^n$ converges weakly in the Skorohod space $D([0,T];M_F(\mathbb{R}^d))$ and the limit has a density $u_t(x)$, where $M_F(\mathbb{R}^d)$ is the space of finite measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also derive a stochastic partial differential equation $u_t(x)$ satisfies. By using the techniques of Malliavin calculus, we prove that $u_t(x)$ is jointly Hölder continuous in time with exponent $\frac{1}{2}-ε$ and in space with exponent $1-ε$ for any $ε>0$.

The functional Breuer-Major theorem

Let $X=\{ X_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{Z}}$ be zero-mean stationary Gaussian sequence of random variables with covariance function $ρ$ satisfying $ρ(0)=1$. Let $φ:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ be a function such that $E[φ(X_0)^2]<\infty$ and assume that $φ$ has Hermite rank $d \geq 1$. The celebrated Breuer-Major theorem asserts that, if $\sum_{r\in\mathbb{Z}} |ρ(r)|^d<\infty$ then the finite dimensional distributions of $\frac1{\sqrt{n}}\sum_{i=0}^{\lfloor n\cdot\rfloor-1} φ(X_i)$ converge to those of $σ\,W$, where $W$ is a standard Brownian motion and $σ$ is some (explicit) constant. Surprisingly, and despite the fact this theorem has become over the years a prominent tool in a bunch of different areas, a necessary and sufficient condition implying the weak convergence in the space ${\bf D}([0,1])$ of càdlàg functions endowed with the Skorohod topology is still missing. Our main goal in this paper is to fill this gap. More precisely, by using suitable boundedness properties satisfied by the generator of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup, we show that tightness holds under the sufficient (and almost necessary) natural condition that $E[|φ(X_0)|^{p}]<\infty$ for some $p>2$.

Total variation estimates in the Breuer-Major theorem

This paper provides estimates for the convergence rate of the total variation distance in the framework of the Breuer-Major theorem, assuming some smoothness properties of the underlying function. The results are proved by applying new bounds for the total variation distance between a random variable expressed as a divergence and a standard Gaussian random variable, which are derived by a combination of techniques of Malliavin calculus and Stein's method. The representation of a functional of a Gaussian sequence as a divergence is established by introducing a shift operator on the expansion in Hermite polynomials. Some applications to the asymptotic behavior of power variations of the fractional Brownian motions and to the estimation of the Hurst parameter using power variations are presented.

Continuous Breuer-Major theorem: tightness and non-stationarity

Let $Y=(Y(t))_{t\geq0}$ be a zero-mean Gaussian stationary process with covariance function $ρ:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ satisfying $ρ(0)=1$. Let $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ be a square-integrable function with respect to the standard Gaussian measure, and suppose the Hermite rank of $f$ is $d\geq 1$. If $\int_\mathbb{R} |ρ(s)|^dds<\infty$, then the celebrated Breuer-Major theorem (in its continuous version) asserts that the finite-dimensional distributions of $Z_\varepsilon:=\sqrt{\varepsilon}\int_0^{\cdot/\varepsilon}f(Y(s))ds$ converge to those of $σW$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$, where $W$ is a standard Brownian motion and $σ$ is some explicit constant. Since its first appearance in 1983, this theorem has become a crucial probabilistic tool in different areas, for instance in signal processing or in statistical inference for fractional Gaussian processes. The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we investigate the tightness in the Breuer-Major theorem. Surprisingly, this problem did not receive a lot of attention until now, and the best available condition due to Ben Hariz [1] is neither arguably very natural, nor easy-to-check in practice. In contrast, our condition very simple, as it only requires that $|f|^p$ must be integrable with respect to the standard Gaussian measure for some $p$ strictly bigger than 2. It is obtained by means of the Malliavin calculus, in particular Meyer inequalities. Secondly, and motivated by a problem of geometrical nature, we extend the continuous Breuer-Major theorem to the notoriously difficult case of self-similar Gaussian processes which are not necessarily stationary. An application to the fluctuations associated with the length process of a regularized version of the bifractional Browninan motion concludes the paper.

Symmetric weighted odd-power variations of fractional Brownian motion and applications

We prove a non-central limit theorem for the symmetric weighted odd-power variations of the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H< 1/2. As applications, we study the asymptotic behavior of the trapezoidal weighted odd-power variations of the fractional Brownian motion and the fractional Brownian motion in Brownian time Z_t:= X_{Y_t}, t >= 0, where X is a fractional Brownian motion and Y is an independent Brownian motion.

Drift parameter estimation for nonlinear stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion

We derive the strong consistency of the least squares estimator for the drift coefficient of a fractional stochastic differential system. The drift coeffcient is one-sided dissipative Lipschitz and the driving noise is additive and fractional with Hurst parameter $H \in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$. We assume that continuous observation is possible. The main tools are ergodic theorem and Malliavin calculus. As a by-product, we derive a maximum inequality for Skorohod integrals, which plays an important role to obtain the strong consistency of the least squares estimator.

Asymptotic expansion of Skorohod integrals

Asymptotic expansion of the distribution of a perturbation $Z_n$ of a Skorohod integral jointly with a reference variable $X_n$ is derived. We introduce a second-order interpolation formula in frequency domain to expand a characteristic functional and combine it with the scheme developed in the martingale expansion. The second-order interpolation and Fourier inversion give asymptotic expansion of the expectation $E[f(Z_n,X_n)]$ for differentiable functions $f$ and also measurable functions $f$. In the latter case, the interpolation method connects the two non-degeneracies of variables for finite $n$ and $\infty$. Random symbols are used for expressing the asymptotic expansion formula. Quasi tangent, quasi torsion and modified quasi torsion are introduced in this paper. We identify these random symbols for a certain quadratic form of a fractional Brownian motion and for a quadratic from of a fractional Brownian motion with random weights. For a quadratic form of a Brownian motion with random weights, we observe that our formula reproduces the formula originally obtained by the martingale expansion.

Stochastic Burgers' Equation on the Real Line: Regularity and Moment Estimates

In this project we investigate the stochastic Burgers' equation with multiplicative space-time white noise on an unbounded spatial domain. We give a random field solution to this equation by defining a process via a kind of Feynman-Kac representation which solves a stochastic partial differential equation such that its Hopf-Cole transformation solves Burgers' equation. Finally, we obtain Hölder regularity and moment estimates for the solution to Burgers' equation.

Crank-Nicolson scheme for stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motions

We study the Crank-Nicolson scheme for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by multidimensional fractional Brownian motion $(B^{1}, \dots, B^{m})$ with Hurst parameter $H \in (\frac 12,1)$. It is well-known that for ordinary differential equations with proper conditions on the regularity of the coefficients, the Crank-Nicolson scheme achieves a convergence rate of $n^{-2}$, regardless of the dimension. In this paper we show that, due to the interactions between the driving processes $ B^{1}, \dots, B^{m} $, the corresponding Crank-Nicolson scheme for $m$-dimensional SDEs has a slower rate than for the one-dimensional SDEs. Precisely, we shall prove that when $m=1$ and when the drift term is zero, the Crank-Nicolson scheme achieves the exact convergence rate $n^{-2H}$, while in the case $m=1$ and the drift term is non-zero, the exact rate turns out to be $n^{-\frac12 -H}$. In the general case when $m>1$, the exact rate equals $n^{\frac12 -2H}$. In all these cases the limiting distribution of the leading error is proved to satisfy some linear SDE driven by Brownian motions independent of the given fractional Brownian motions.

Symmetric stochastic integrals with respect to a class of self-similar Gaussian processes

We study the asymptotic behavior of the $ν$-symmetric Riemman sums for functionals of a self-similar centered Gaussian process $X$ with increment exponent $0<α<1$. We prove that, under mild assumptions on the covariance of $X$, the law of the weak $ν$-symmetric Riemman sums converge in the Skorohod topology when $α=(2\ell+1)^{-1}$, where $\ell$ denotes the smallest positive integer satisfying $\int_{0}^{1}x^{2j}ν(dx)=(2j+1)^{-1}$ for all $j=0,\dots, \ell-1$. In the case $α>(2\ell+1)^{-1}$, we prove that the convergence holds in probability.

Noncentral limit theorem for the generalized Rosenblatt process

We use techniques of Malliavin calculus to study the convergence in law of a family of generalized Rosenblatt processes $Z_γ$ with kernels defined by parameters $γ$ taking values in a tetrahedral region $Δ$ of $\RR^q$. We prove that, as $γ$ converges to a face of $Δ$, the process $Z_γ$ converges to a compound Gaussian distribution with random variance given by the square of a Rosenblatt process of one lower rank. The convergence in law is shown to be stable. This work generalizes a previous result of Bai and Taqqu, who proved the result in the case $q=2$ and without stability.

Large time asymptotics for the parabolic Anderson model driven by space and time correlated noise

We consider the linear stochastic heat equation on $\mathbb{R}^\ell$, driven by a Gaussian noise which is colored in time and space. The spatial covariance satisfies general assumptions and includes examples such as the Riesz kernel in any dimension and the covariance of the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in (\frac 14, \frac 12]$ in dimension one. First we establish the existence of a unique mild solution and we derive a Feynman-Kac formula for its moments using a family of independent Brownian bridges and assuming a general integrability condition on the initial data. In the second part of the paper we compute Lyapunov exponents and lower and upper exponential growth indices in terms of a variational quantity.

Parameter estimation for fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes of general Hurst parameter

This paper provides several statistical estimators for the drift and volatility parameters of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by fractional Brownian motion, whose observations can be made either continuously or at discrete time instants. First and higher order power variations are used to estimate the volatility parameter. The almost sure convergence of the estimators and the corresponding central limit theorems are obtained for all the Hurst parameter range $H\in (0, 1)$. The least squares estimator is used for the drift parameter. A central limit theorem is proved when the Hurst parameter $H \in (0, 1/2)$ and a noncentral limit theorem is proved for $H\in[3/4, 1)$. Thus, the open problem left in the paper by Hu and Nualart (2010) is completely solved, where a central limit theorem for least squares estimator is proved for $H\in [1/2, 3/4)$.

Modified Euler approximation scheme for stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motions

For a stochastic differential equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H> \frac12$ it is known that the classical Euler scheme has the rate of convergence $2H-1$. In this paper we introduce a new numerical scheme which is closer to the classical Euler scheme for diffusion processes, in the sense that it has the rate of convergence $2H-\frac12$. In particular, the rate of convergence becomes $\frac 12$ when $H$ is formally set to $\frac 12$ (the rate of Euler scheme for classical Brownian motion). The rate of weak convergence is also deduced for this scheme. The main tools are fractional calculus and Malliavin calculus. We also apply our approach to the classical Euler scheme.

An implicit numerical scheme for a class of backward doubly stochastic differential equations

In this paper, we consider a class of backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDE for short) with general terminal value and general random generator. Those BDSDEs do not involve any forward diffusion processes. By using the techniques of Malliavin calculus, we are able to establish the $L^p$-Hölder continuity of the solution pair. Then, an implicit numerical scheme for the BDSDE is proposed and the rate of convergence is obtained in the $L^p$-sense. As a by-product, we obtain an explicit representation of the process $Y$ in the solution pair to a linear BDSDE with random coefficients.

Functional limit theorem for the self-intersection local time of the fractional Brownian motion

Let $\{B_{t}\}_{t\geq0}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $0<H<1$, where $d\geq2$. Consider the approximation of the self-intersection local time of $B$, defined as \begin{align*} I_{T}^{\varepsilon} &=\int_{0}^{T}\int_{0}^{t}p_{\varepsilon}(B_{t}-B_{s})dsdt, \end{align*} where $p_\varepsilon(x)$ is the heat kernel. We prove that the process $\{I_{T}^{\varepsilon}-\mathbb{E}\left[I_{T}^{\varepsilon}\right]\}_{T\geq0}$, rescaled by a suitable normalization, converges in law to a constant multiple of a standard Brownian motion for $\frac{3}{2d}<H\leq\frac{3}{4}$ and to a multiple of a sum of independent Hermite processes for $\frac{3}{4}<H<1$, in the space $C[0,\infty)$, endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on compacts.
