Ideals and structure of operator algebras

We continue the study of r-ideals, l-ideals, and HSA's in operator algebras. Some applications are made to the structure of operator algebras, including Wedderburn type theorems for a class of operator algebras. We also consider the one-sided $M$-ideal structure of certain tensor products of operator algebras.

A characterization and a generalization of W*-modules

We give a new Banach module characterization of $W^*$-modules, also known as selfdual Hilbert $C^*$-modules over a von Neumann algebra. This leads to a generalization of the notion, and the theory, of W*-modules, to the setting where the operator algebras are $σ$-weakly closed algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. That is, we find the appropriate weak* topology variant of our earlier notion of {\em rigged modules}, and their theory, which in turn generalizes the notions of C*-module, and Hilbert space, successively. Our {\em w*-rigged modules} have canonical `envelopes' which are W*-modules. Indeed, w*-rigged modules may be defined to be a subspace of a W*-module possessing certain properties.

Dual operator systems

We characterize weak* closed unital vector spaces of operators on a Hilbert space $H$. More precisely, we first show that an operator system, which is the dual of an operator space, can be represented completely isometrically and weak* homeomorphically as a weak* closed operator subsystem of $B(H)$. An analogous result is proved for unital operator spaces. Finally, we give some somewhat surprising examples of dual unital operator spaces.

Nuclearity-related properties for nonselfadjoint algebras

In analogy with the C*-algebra theory, we study variants appropriate to nonselfadjoint algebras of nuclearity, the local lifting property, exactness, and the weak expectation property. In addition, we study the relationships between these notions, and how they are connected with the classical C*-algebra theory through the use of C*-algebras generated by the algebra.

Morita equivalence of dual operator algebras

We consider a variant of the notion of Morita equivalence appropriate to weak* closed algebras of Hilbert space operators, which we call {\em weak Morita equivalence}. We obtain new variants, appropriate to the dual algebra setting, of the basic theory of strong Morita equivalence, and new nonselfadjoint variants of aspects of Rieffel's $W^*$-algebraic Morita equivalence.

Open partial isometries and positivity in operator spaces

We study positivity in C*-modules and operator spaces using open tripotents, and an ordered version of the `noncommutative Shilov boundary'. Because of their independent interest, we also systematically study open tripotents and their properties.

Extensions of operator algebras I

We transcribe a portion of the theory of extensions of C*-algebras to general operator algebras. We also include several new general facts about approximately unital ideals in operator algebras and the C*-algebras which they generate.

Ordered involutive operator spaces

This is a companion to recent papers of the authors; here we construct the `noncommutative Shilov boundary' of a (possibly nonunital) selfadjoint ordered space of Hilbert space operators. The morphisms in the universal property of the boundary preserve order. As an application, we consider `maximal' and `minimal' unitizations of such ordered operator spaces.

Applications of the Fuglede-Kadison determinant: Szegö's theorem and outers for noncommutative $H^p$

We first use properties of the Fuglede-Kadison determinant on $L^p(M)$, for a finite von Neumann algebra $M$, to give several useful variants of the noncommutative Szegö theorem for $L^p(M)$, including the one usually attributed to Kolmogorov and Krein. As an application, we solve the longstanding open problem concerning the noncommutative generalization, to Arveson's noncommutative $H^p$ spaces, of the famous `outer factorization' of functions $f$ with $\log |f|$ integrable. Using the Fuglede-Kadison determinant, we also generalize many other classical results concerning outer functions.

Von Neumann algebraic H^p theory

Around 1967, Arveson invented a striking noncommutative generalization of classical $H^\infty$, known as {\em subdiagonal algebras}, which include a wide array of examples of interest to operator theorists. Their theory extends that of the generalized $H^p$ spaces for function algebras from the 1960s, in an extremely remarkable, complete, and literal fashion, but for reasons that are `von Neumann algebraic'. Most of the present paper consists of a survey of our work on Arveson's algebras, and the attendant $H^p$ theory, explaining some of the main ideas in their proofs, and including some improvements and short-cuts. The newest results utilize new variants of the noncommutative Szegö theorem for $L^p(M)$, to generalize many of the classical results concerning outer functions, to the noncommutative $H^p$ context. In doing so we solve several of the old open problems in the subject. We include full proofs, for the most part, of the simpler `antisymmetric algebra' special case of our results on outers.

Hereditary subalgebras of operator algebras

In recent work of the second author, a technical result was proved establishing a bijective correspondence between certain open projections in a C*-algebra containing an operator algebra A, and certain one-sided ideals of A. Here we give several remarkable consequences of this result. These include a generalization of the theory of hereditary subalgebras of a C*-algebra, and the solution of a ten year old problem on the Morita equivalence of operator algebras. In particular, the latter gives a very clean generalization of the notion of Hilbert C*-modules to nonselfadjoint algebras. We show that an `ideal' of a general operator space X is the intersection of X with an `ideal' in any containing C*-algebra or C*-module. Finally, we discuss the noncommutative variant of the classical theory of `peak sets'.

Noncommutative function theory and unique extensions

We generalize to the setting of Arveson's maximal subdiagonal subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras, the Szegö $L^p$-distance estimate, and classical theorems of F. and M. Riesz, Gleason and Whitney, and Kolmogorov. In so doing, we are finally able to provide a complete noncommutative analog of the famous cycle of theorems characterizing the function theoretic generalizations of $H^\infty$. A sample of our other results: we prove a Kaplansky density result for a large class of these algebras, and give a necessary condition for when every completely contractive homomorphism on a unital subalgebra of a C*-algebra possesses a unique completely positive extension.

A Beurling theorem for noncommutative L^p

We extend Beurling's invariant subspace theorem, by characterizing subspaces $K$ of the noncommutative $L^p$ spaces which are invariant with respect to Arveson's maximal subdiagonal algebras, sometimes known as noncommutative $H^\infty$. It is significant that a certain subspace, and a certain quotient, of $K$ are $L^p({\mathcal D})$-modules in the recent sense of Junge and Sherman, and therefore have a nice decomposition into cyclic submodules. We also give general inner-outer factorization formulae for elements in the noncommutative $L^p$. These facts generalize the classical ones, and should be useful in the future development of noncommutative $H^p$ theory. In addition, these results characterize maximal subdiagonal algebras.

Duality and Operator Algebras II: Operator Algebras as Banach Algebras

We answer, by counterexample, several open questions concerning algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. The answers add further weight to the thesis that, for many purposes, such algebras ought to be studied in the framework of operator spaces, as opposed to that of Banach spaces and Banach algebras. In particular, the `nonselfadjoint analogue' of a W*-algebra resides naturally in the category of dual operator spaces, as opposed to dual Banach spaces. We also show that an automatic w*-continuity result in the preceding paper of the authors is sharp.

Characterizations of noncommutative $H^\infty$

We transfer a large part of the circle of theorems characterizing the generalization of classical $H^\infty$ known as `weak* Dirichlet algebras', to Arveson's noncommutative setting of subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras.

Duality and operator algebras

We investigate some subtle and interesting phenomena in the duality theory of operator spaces and operator algebras. In particular, we give several applications of operator space theory, based on the surprising fact that certain maps are always $w^*$-continuous on dual operator spaces. For example, this yields a new characterization of the $σ$-weakly closed (possibly nonunital and nonselfadjoint) operator algebras, and it makes possible a generalization of the theory of $W^*$-modules to the framework of modules over such algebras. We also give a Banach module characterization of $σ$-weakly closed spaces of operators which are invariant under the action of a von Neumann algebra.

Ordered C*-modules

In this first part of a study of ordered operator spaces, we develop the basic theory of `ordered C*-bimodules'. A crucial role is played by `open central tripotents', a JB*-triple variant of Akemann's notion of open projection.
