Experimental Verification of 3D Plasmonic Cloaking in Free-Space

We report the experimental verification of metamaterial cloaking for a 3D object in free space. We apply the plasmonic cloaking technique, based on scattering cancellation, to suppress microwave scattering from a finite-length dielectric cylinder. We verify that scattering suppression is obtained all around the object in the near- and far-field and for different incidence angles, validating our measurements with analytical results and full-wave simulations. Our near-field and far-field measurements confirm that realistic and robust plasmonic metamaterial cloaks may be realized for elongated 3D objects with moderate transverse cross-section at microwave frequencies.

Plasmonic Cloaking of Cylinders: Finite Length, Oblique Illumination and Cross-Polarization Coupling

Metamaterial cloaking has been proposed and studied in recent years following several interesting approaches. One of them, the scattering-cancellation technique, or plasmonic cloaking, exploits the plasmonic effects of suitably designed thin homogeneous metamaterial covers to drastically suppress the scattering of moderately sized objects within specific frequency ranges of interest. Besides its inherent simplicity, this technique also holds the promise of isotropic response and weak polarization dependence. Its theory has been applied extensively to symmetrical geometries and canonical 3D shapes, but its application to elongated objects has not been explored with the same level of detail. We derive here closed-form theoretical formulas for infinite cylinders under arbitrary wave incidence, and validate their performance with full-wave numerical simulations, also considering the effects of finite lengths and truncation effects in cylindrical objects. In particular, we find that a single isotropic (idealized) cloaking layer may successfully suppress the dominant scattering coefficients of moderately thin elongated objects, even for finite lengths comparable with the incident wavelength, providing a weak dependence on the incidence angle. These results may pave the way for application of plasmonic cloaking in a variety of practical scenarios of interest.

Probing new physics with long-lived charged particles produced by atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos

As suggested by some extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, dark matter may be a super-weakly interacting lightest stable particle, while the next-to-lightest particle (NLP) is charged and meta-stable. One could test such a possibility with neutrino telescopes, by detecting the charged NLPs produced in high-energy neutrino collisions with Earth matter. We study the production of charged NLPs by both atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos; only the latter, which is largely uncertain and has not been detected yet, was the focus of previous studies. We compute the resulting fluxes of the charged NLPs, compare those of different origins, and analyze the dependence on the underlying particle physics setup. We point out that even if the astrophysical neutrino flux is very small, atmospheric neutrinos, especially those from the prompt decay of charmed mesons, may provide a detectable flux of NLP pairs at neutrino telescopes such as IceCube. We also comment on the flux of charged NLPs expected from proton-nucleon collisions, and show that, for theoretically motivated and phenomenologically viable models, it is typically sub-dominant and below detectable rates.

QCD Radiation in the Production of High s-hat Final States

In the production of very heavy final states - high Mandelstam s-hat - extra QCD radiation can play a significant role. By comparing several different parton shower approximations to results obtained with fixed-order perturbation theory, we quantify the degree to which these approaches agree (or disagree), focussing on initial state radiation above pT = 50 GeV, for top pair production at the Tevatron and at the LHC, and for SUSY pair production at the LHC. Special attention is paid to ambiguities associated with the choice of the maximum value of the ordering variable in parton shower models.

Pseudo-Axions in Little Higgs Models

In Little Higgs models, the Higgs mass is stabilized at the one-loop level by the mechanism of collective symmetry breaking. Typically, the basic ingredient of these models is a large(r) global symmetry group spontaneously broken at a scale of several TeV. The (light) Higgs appears as a Goldstone boson corresponding to a non-diagonal broken generator of this global symmetry. There could also be physical pseudoscalar particles present which belong to diagonal generators, having the properties of axions with masses in the range from several GeV up to the electroweak scale. We investigate the interesting phenomenology of these pseudo-axions at the linear collider as well as the photon collider.

Increased Yield of ttbb at Hadron Colliders in Low-Energy Supersymmetry

Light bottom squarks and gluinos have been invoked to explain the b quark pair production excess at the Tevatron. We investigate the associated production of ttbb at hadron colliders in this scenario, and find that the rates for this process are enhanced over the Standard Model prediction. If light gluinos exist, it may be possible to detect them at the Tevatron, and they could easily be observed at the LHC.

Measuring the Higgs Boson Self Coupling at the LHC and Finite Top Mass Matrix Elements

Inclusive Standard Model Higgs boson pair production and subsequent decay to same-sign dileptons via weak gauge W bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider has the capability to determine the Higgs boson self-coupling, lambda. The large top quark mass limit is found not to be a good approximation for the signal if one wishes to utilize differential distributions in the analysis. We find that it should be possible at the LHC with design luminosity to establish that the Standard Model Higgs boson has a non-zero self-coupling and that lambda/lambda(SM) can be restricted to a range of 0--3.7 at 95% confidence level if its mass is between 150 and 200 GeV.

Top quark associated production of topcolor pions at hadron colliders

We investigate the associated production of a neutral physical pion with top quarks in the context of topcolor assisted technicolor. We find that single-top associated production does not yield viable rates at either the Tevatron or LHC. tt-associated production at the Tevatron is suppressed relative to Standard Model ttH, but at the LHC is strongly enhanced and would allow for easy observation of the main decay channels to bottom quarks, and possible observation of the decay to gluons.

Probing the MSSM Higgs Sector via Weak Boson Fusion at the LHC

In the MSSM weak boson fusion produces the two CP even Higgs bosons with a combined strength equivalent to the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson. The tau tau decay mode --- supplemented by gamma gamma --- provides a highly significant signal for at least one of the CP even Higgs bosons at the LHC with reasonable luminosity. The accessible parameter space covers the entire physical range which will be left unexplored by LEP2.
