Spectral interferometric polarised coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy

We have developed an interferometric implementation of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) which enables broadband coherent Raman spectroscopy free from non-resonant background (NRB), with a signal strength proportional to concentration. Spectra encode mode symmetry information into the amplitude response which can be directly compared to polarised spontaneous Raman spectra. The method requires only passive polarisation optics and is suitable for a wide range of laser linewidths and pulse durations

Dynamical Corrections to Spin Wave Excitations in Quantum Wells due to Coulomb Interactions and Magnetic Ions

We have measured dispersions of spin-flip waves and spin-flip single-particle excitations of a spin polarized two-dimensional electron gas in a CdMnTe quantum well using resonant Raman scattering. We find the energy of the spin-flip wave to be below the spin-flip single particle excitation continuum, a contradiction to the theory of spin waves in diluted magnetic semiconductors put forth in [Phys. Rev. B 70, 045205 (2004)]. We show that the inclusion of terms accounting for the Coulomb interaction between carriers in the spin wave propagator leads to an agreement with our experimental results. The dominant Coulomb contribution leads to an overall red shift of the mixed electron-Mn spin modes while the dynamical coupling between Mn ions results in a small blue shift. We provide a simulated model system which shows the reverse situation but at an extremely large magnetic field.

Exploring the Spectrum of QCD using the Lattice

The calculation of the spectrum of QCD is key to an understanding of the strong interactions, and vital if we are to capitalize on the experimental study of the spectrum. In this paper, we describe progress towards understanding the spectrum of resonances of both mesons and baryons from lattice QCD, focusing in particular on the resonances of the $I=1/2$ nucleon states, and of charmonium mesons composed of the heavy charmed quarks.

Spatially resolved enhancement of fluorescence and Raman scattering by Ag nanoparticle arrays

Highly ordered periodic arrays of silver nanoparticles have been fabricated which exhibit surface plasmon resonances in the visible spectrum. We demonstrate the ability of these structures to alter the fluorescence properties of vicinal dye molecules by providing an additional radiative decay channel. Using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, we have created high resolution spatial maps of the molecular lifetime components; these show an order of magnitude increase in decay rate from a localized volume around the nanoparticles, resulting in a commensurate enhancement in the fluorescence emission intensity. Spatial maps of the Raman scattering signal from molecules on the nanoparticles shows an enhancement of more than 5 orders of magnitude.

Nucleon Structure from Lattice QCD

Recent advances in lattice field theory, in computer technology and in chiral perturbation theory have enabled lattice QCD to emerge as a powerful quantitative tool in understanding hadron structure. I describe recent progress in the computation of the nucleon form factors and moments of parton distribution functions, before proceeding to describe lattice studies of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, I show how lattice studies of GPDs contribute to building a three-dimensional picture of the proton. I conclude by describing the prospects for studying the structure of resonances from lattice QCD.

Results and Frontiers in Lattice Baryon Spectroscopy

The Lattice Hadron Physics Collaboration (LHPC) baryon spectroscopy effort is reviewed. To date the LHPC has performed exploratory Lattice QCD calculations of the low-lying spectrum of Nucleon and Delta baryons. These calculations demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by obtaining the masses of an unprecedented number of excited states with definite quantum numbers. Future work of the project is outlined.

Hadronic Resonances from Lattice QCD

The determination of the pattern of hadronic resonances as predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics requires the use of non-perturbative techniques. Lattice QCD has emerged as the dominant tool for such calculations, and has produced many QCD predictions which can be directly compared to experiment. The concepts underlying lattice QCD are outlined, methods for calculating excited states are discussed, and results from an exploratory Nucleon and Delta baryon spectrum study are presented.

Measuring the spin polarization and Zeeman energy of a spin-polarized electron gas: Comparison between Raman scattering and photoluminescence

We compare resonant electronic Raman scattering and photoluminescence measurements for the characterization of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas embedded in $\text{Cd}_{1-x}\text{Mn}_x\text{Te}$ single quantum wells. From Raman scattering by single-particle excitations in a zero magnetic field, we measure the Fermi velocity and then obtain the Fermi energy (as well as the electron density), which is comparable to that extracted from photoluminescence for moderate electron densities, assuming a bare band-edge mass. At large electron densities, the Fermi energies derived from Raman scattering and photoluminescence differ. For an applied in-plane magnetic field and zero wave vector transferred to the electron gas, Raman scattering spectra show peaks at both the Zeeman energy $Z$, resulting from collective excitations of the spin-polarized electron gas, and the one electron spin-flip energy $Z^*$. Magneto-photoluminescence spectra show conduction band splitting that are equivalent to $Z$, suggesting that collective effects are present in the photoluminescence spectra. Assuming (as before) an uncorrected mass, the degree of spin polarization $ζ$ determined from the magneto-photoluminescence lineshape is found to differ from that derived from the magnetic field dependent Raman scattering measurements for large electron densities. We attribute the discrepancy in measuring $ζ$ and the Fermi energy to the renormalized mass resulting from many-body electron-electron interactions.

Exotic and higher spin mesons in the charmonium

Exotic and higher spin (> 1) mesons are still not throughly investigated in lattice QCD. Using a set of derivative based operators we report our exploratory study of these mesons in charmonium region. We use a 12^3 X 48 anisotropic (xi = 3) clover lattice with inverse temporal lattice spacing a^-1 = 6.05 GeV. Techniques developed in this exploratory study will be utilized in our future comprehensive study of light hybrid mesons that are to be explored in the 12 GeV GlueX experiment at Jefferson Laboratory.

Radiative Transitions in Charmonium

The form factors for the radiative transitions between charmonium mesons are investigated. We employ an anisotropic lattice using a Wilson gauge action, and domain-wall fermion action. We extrapolate the form factors to $Q^2 = 0$, corresponding to a real photon, using quark-model-inspired functions. Finally, comparison is made with photocouplings extracted from the measured radiative widths, where known. Our preliminary results find photocouplings commensurate with these experimentally extracted values.

Combining Quark and Link Smearing to Improve Extended Baryon Operators

The effects of Gaussian quark-field smearing and analytic stout-link smearing on the correlations of gauge-invariant extended baryon operators are studied. Gaussian quark-field smearing substantially reduces contributions from the short wavelength modes of the theory, while stout-link smearing significantly reduces the noise from the stochastic evaluations. The use of gauge-link smearing is shown to be crucial for baryon operators constructed of covariantly-displaced quark fields. Preferred smearing parameters are determined for a lattice spacing a_s ~ 0.1 fm.

Clebsch-Gordan Construction of Lattice Interpolating Fields for Excited Baryons

Large sets of baryon interpolating field operators are developed for use in lattice QCD studies of baryons with zero momentum. Operators are classified according to the double-valued irreducible representations of the octahedral group. At first, three-quark smeared, local operators are constructed for each isospin and strangeness and they are classified according to their symmetry with respect to exchange of Dirac indices. Nonlocal baryon operators are formulated in a second step as direct products of the spinor structures of smeared, local operators together with gauge-covariant lattice displacements of one or more of the smeared quark fields. Linear combinations of direct products of spinorial and spatial irreducible representations are then formed with appropriate Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the octahedral group. The construction attempts to maintain maximal overlap with the continuum SU(2) group in order to provide a physically interpretable basis. Nonlocal operators provide direct couplings to states that have nonzero orbital angular momentum.
