The optical architecture of a heterogenous quantum network deployed in production facilities

Quantum Communications promise advances in cryptography, quantum computing and clock synchronisation, among other emerging applications. However, communication based on quantum phenomena requires an extreme level of isolation from external disturbances, complicating the co-propagation of quantum and classical signals. The challenge is greater when deploying networks that are both heterogeneous (e.g., multiple vendors) and installed in production facilities, given that this type of infrastructure already supports networks loaded with their own requirements. Moreover, to achieve a broad acceptance among network operators, the joint management and operation of quantum and classical resources, compliance with standards, and legal and quality assurance need to be addressed. This article presents solutions to the aforementioned challenges validated in the Madrid quantum network during the implementation of the projects CiViC and OpenQKD. This network was designed to integrate quantum communications in the telecommunications ecosystem by installing quantum-key-distribution modules from multiple providers in production nodes of two different operators. The modules were connected through an optically-switched network with more than 130~km of deployed optical fibre. The tests were done in compliance with strict service level agreements that protected the legacy traffic of the pre-existing classical network. The goal was to ensure full quantum-classical interoperability at all levels, while limiting the modifications to optical transport and encryption and complying with relevant standards. This effort is intended to lay the foundation for large-scale quantum network deployments.

Quantifier elimination for lovely pairs of strongly geometric fields

Let $T$ be a complete strongly geometric theory of fields with quantifier elimination. We show that the theory of lovely pairs of $T$ has quantifier elimination in Delon's definitional expansion by predicates for linear independence and function symbols for the corresponding coordinate functions. Apart from recovering Delon's original results for pairs of algebraically closed fields and dense pairs of algebraically closed valued fields, we obtain as particular cases, quantifier elimination for theories of dense pairs of real closed and $p$-adically closed fields.

Multi-party Holomeetings: Toward a New Era of Low-Cost Volumetric Holographic Meetings in Virtual Reality

Fueled by advances in multi-party communications, increasingly mature immersive technologies being adopted, and the COVID-19 pandemic, a new wave of social virtual reality (VR) platforms have emerged to support socialization, interaction, and collaboration among multiple remote users who are integrated into shared virtual environments. Social VR aims to increase levels of (co-)presence and interaction quality by overcoming the limitations of 2D windowed representations in traditional multi-party video conferencing tools, although most existing solutions rely on 3D avatars to represent users. This article presents a social VR platform that supports real-time volumetric holographic representations of users that are based on point clouds captured by off-the-shelf RGB-D sensors, and it analyzes the platform's potential for conducting interactive holomeetings (i.e., holoconferencing scenarios). This work evaluates such a platform's performance and readiness for conducting meetings with up to four users, and it provides insights into aspects of the user experience when using single-camera and low-cost capture systems in scenarios with both frontal and side viewpoints. Overall, the obtained results confirm the platform's maturity and the potential of holographic communications for conducting interactive multi-party meetings, even when using low-cost systems and single-camera capture systems in scenarios where users are sitting or have a limited translational movement along the X, Y, and Z axes within the 3D virtual environment (commonly known as 3 Degrees of Freedom plus, 3DoF+)
