Absence of Replica Symmetry Breaking in a Region of the Phase Diagram of the Ising Spin Glass

We prove that the distribution functions of magnetization and spin glass order parameter coincide on the Nishimori line in the phase diagram of the $\pm J$ Ising model in any dimension. This implies absence of replica symmetry breaking because the distribution function of magnetization consists only of two delta functions, suggesting the same simple structure for the distribution of spin glass order parameter. It then follows that the mixed (glassy) phase, where the ferromagnetic order coexists with complex phase space, should lie, if any, below the Nishimori line. We also argue that the AT line to mark the onset of RSB with a continous distribution of the spin glass order parameter, if any again, would start with an infinite slope from the multicritical point where paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and spin glass phases merge.

Continuous time dynamics of the Thermal Minority Game

We study the continuous time dynamics of the Thermal Minority Game. We find that the dynamical equations of the model reduce to a set of stochastic differential equations for an interacting disordered system with non-trivial random diffusion. This is the simplest microscopic description which accounts for all the features of the system. Within this framework, we study the phase structure of the model and find that its macroscopic properties strongly depend on the initial conditions.

Reply to Comment on ``Thermal Model for Adaptive Competition in a Market''

We reply to the Comment of Challet et al. [cond-mat/0004308] on our paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4429 (1999)]. We show that the claim of the Comment that the effects of the temperature in the Thermal Minority Game ``can be eliminated by time rescaling'' and consequently the behaviour is ``independent of T'' has no general validity.

Comment on "Phase Diagram of the Random Energy Model with Higher-Order Ferromagnetic Term and Error Correcting Codes due to Sourlas"

In a recent Physics Review Letter, Dorlas and Wedagedera have studied the random energy model with an additional p-spin ferromagnetic interaction. Here we note that (i) we have solved the corresponding problem of a spherical spin system with p-spin glass interactions and r-spin ferromagnetic interactions, and (ii) a simple mapping yields the results of DW and generalizations. p>2 spin glasses with first order ferromagnetic transitions

We consider an infinite-range spherical p-spin glass model with an additional r-spin ferromagnetic interaction, both statically using a replica analysis and dynamically via a generating functional method. For r>2 we find that there are first order transitions to ferromagnetic phases. For r =p only the replica symmetric phase exists.

Glass transition in self organizing cellular patterns

We have considered the dynamical evolution of cellular patterns controlled by a stochastic Glauber process determined by the deviations of local cell topology from that of a crystalline structure. Above a critical temperature evolution is towards a common equilibrium state from any initial configuration, but beneath this temperature there is a dynamical phase transition, with a start from a quasi-random state leading to non-equilibrium glassy freezing whereas an ordered start rests almost unchanged. A temporal persistence function decays exponentially in the high temperature equilibrating state but has a characteristic slow non-equilibrium aging-like behaviour in the low temperature glassy phase.

A thermal model for adaptive competition in a market

New continuous and stochastic extensions of the minority game, devised as a fundamental model for a market of competitive agents, are introduced and studied in the context of statistical physics. The new formulation reproduces the key features of the original model, without the need for some of its special assumptions and, most importantly, it demonstrates the crucial role of stochastic decision-making. Furthermore, this formulation provides the exact but novel non-linear equations for the dynamics of the system.

Competition between glassiness and order in a multi-spin glass

A mean-field multi-spin interaction spin glass model is analyzed in the presence of a ferromagnetic coupling. The static and dynamical phase diagrams contain four phases (paramagnet, spin glass, ordinary ferromagnet and glassy ferromagnet) and exhibit reentrant behavior. The glassy ferromagnet phase has anomalous dynamical properties. The results are consistent with a nonequilibrium thermodynamics that has been proposed for glasses.

Replica Symmetry Breaking in the Critical Behaviour of the Random Ferromagnet

We study the critical properties of the weakly disordered $p$-component random Heisenberg ferromagnet. It is shown that if the specific heat critical exponent of the pure system is positive, the traditional renormalization group (RG) flows at dimensions $D=4-\e$, which are usually considered as describing the disorder-induced universal critical behavior, are {\it unstable} with respect to replica symmetry breaking (RSB) potentials as found in spin glasses. It is demonstrated that the RG flows involving RSB potentials lead to fixed points which have the structure known as the 1 step RSB, and there exists a whole spectrum of such fixed points. It is argued that spontaneous RSB can occur due to the interactions of the fluctuating fields with the local non-perturbative degrees of freedom coming from the multiple local minima solutions of the mean-field equations. However, it is not clear whether or not RSB occurs for infinitesimally weak disorder. Physical consequences of these conclusions are discussed.
