Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity in 3D: Thermodynamics of cosmological solutions and black holes with torsion

We construct generalized sets of asymptotic conditions for both three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity and a novel extension that incorporates torsion through a deformation of the Maxwell algebra. These boundary conditions include the most general temporal components of the gauge fields that consistently preserve the corresponding asymptotic Maxwell algebras with identical classical central charges, while allowing for the inclusion of chemical potentials conjugate to the conserved charges. We show that both sets of asymptotic configurations admit nontrivial solutions carrying not only mass and angular momentum but also an additional global spin-2 charge. In the torsionless case, the theory admits locally flat cosmological spacetimes, whereas in the presence of torsion, it generalizes to BTZ-like black hole geometries. For each case, the thermodynamic properties are consistently derived in terms of the gauge fields and the topology of the Euclidean manifold, shown to correspond to a solid torus. Furthermore, we obtain a general expression for the entropy, depending on both the horizon area and its spin-2 analogues, which can be written as a reparametrization-invariant integral of the induced spin-2 fields on the spacelike section of the horizon.

Enhanced Conformal $BMS_3$ Symmetries

An enhanced version of the conformal BMS$_{3}$ algebra is presented. It is shown to emerge from the asymptotic structure of an extension of conformal gravity in 3D by Pope and Townsend that consistently accommodates an additional spin-2 field, once it is endowed with a suitable set of boundary conditions. The canonical generators of the asymptotic symmetries then span a precise nonlinear W$_{(2,2,2,2,1,1,1)}$ algebra, whose central extensions and coefficients of the nonlinear terms are completely determined by the central charge of the Virasoro subalgebra. The wedge algebra corresponds to the conformal group in four dimensions $SO(4,2)$ and therefore, enhanced conformal BMS$_{3}$ can also be regarded as an infinite-dimensional nonlinear extension of the AdS$_{5}$ algebra with nontrivial central extensions. It is worth mentioning that our boundary conditions might be considered as a starting point in order to consistently incorporate either a finite or an infinite number of conformal higher spin fields.

BMS$_{3}$ (Carrollian) field theories from a bound in the coupling of current-current deformations of CFT$_{2}$

Two types of Carrollian field theories are shown to emerge from finite current-current deformations of toroidal CFT$_{2}$'s when the deformation coupling is precisely fixed, up to a sign. In both cases the energy and momentum densities fulfill the BMS$_{3}$ algebra. Applying these results to the bosonic string, one finds that the electric-like deformation (positive coupling) reduces to the standard tensionless string. The magnetic-like deformation (negative coupling) yields to a new theory, still being relativistic, devoid of tension and endowed with an "inner Carrollian structure". Classical solutions describe a sort of "self-interacting null particle" moving along generic null curves of the original background metric, not necessarily geodesics. This magnetic-like theory is also shown to be recovered from inequivalent limits in the tension of the bosonic string. Electric- and magnetic-like deformations of toroidal CFT$_{2}$'s can be seen to correspond to limiting cases of continuous exactly marginal (trivial) deformations spanned by an SO(1,1) automorphism of the current algebra. Thus, the absolute value of the current-current deformation coupling is shown to be bounded. When the bound saturates, the deformation ceases to be exactly marginal, but still retains the full conformal symmetry in two alternative ultrarelativistic regimes.

Three-dimensional Hypergravity Theories and Semigroup Expansion Method

In this work we present novel and known three-dimensional hypergravity theories which are obtained by applying the powerful semigroup expansion method. We show that the expansion procedure considered here yields a consistent way of coupling different three-dimensional Chern-Simons gravity theories with massless spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ gauge fields. First, by expanding the $\mathfrak{osp}\left(1|4\right)$ superalgebra with a particular semigroup a generalized hyper-Poincar\'e algebra is found. Interestingly, the hyper-Poincar\'e and hyper-Maxwell algebras appear as subalgebras of this generalized hypersymmetry algebra. Then, we show that the generalized hyper-Poincar\'e CS gravity action can be written as a sum of diverse hypergravity CS Lagrangians. We extend our study to a generalized hyper-AdS gravity theory by considering a different semigroup. Both generalized hyperalgebras are then found to be related through an In\"on\"u-Wigner contraction which can be seen as a generalization of the existing vanishing cosmological constant limit between the hyper-AdS and hyper-Poincar\'e gravity theories.

Nonlinear automorphism of the conformal algebra in 2D and continuous $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformations

The conformal algebra in 2D (Diff($S^{1}$)$\oplus$Diff($S^{1}$)) is shown to be preserved under a nonlinear map that mixes both chiral (holomorphic) generators $T$ and $\bar{T}$. It depends on a single real parameter and it can be regarded as a ``nonlinear $SO(1,1)$ automorphism.'' The map preserves the form of the momentum density and naturally induces a flow on the energy density by a marginal $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformation. In turn, the general solution of the corresponding flow equation of the deformed action can be analytically solved in closed form, recovering the nonlinear automorphism. The deformed CFT$_{2}$ can also be described through the original theory on a field-dependent curved metric whose lapse and shift functions are given by the variation of the deformed Hamiltonian with respect to the energy and momentum densities, respectively. The conformal symmetries of the deformed theories can then also be seen to arise from diffeomorphisms that fulfill suitably deformed conformal Killing equations. Besides, Cardy formula is shown to map to itseft under the nonlinear automorphism. As a simple example, the deformation of $N$ free bosons is briefly addressed, making contact with recent related results and the dimensional reduction of the ModMax theory. Furthermore, the nonlinear map between the conformal algebra in 2D and its ultra/non-relativistic versions (BMS$_{3}$$\approx$CCA$_{2}$$\approx$GCA$_{2}$), including the corresponding finite $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformation, are recovered from a limiting case of the nonlinear automorphism. The extension to a three-parameter nonlinear $ISO(1,1)$ automorphism of the conformal algebra, and a discrete nonlinear automorphism of BMS$_{3}$ are also briefly discussed.

Mapping relativistic to ultra/non-relativistic conformal symmetries in 2D and finite $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformations

The conformal symmetry algebra in 2D (Diff($S^{1}$)$\oplus$Diff($S^{1}$)) is shown to be related to its ultra/non-relativistic version (BMS$_{3}$$\approx$GCA$_{2}$) through a nonlinear map of the generators, without any sort of limiting process. For a generic classical CFT$_{2}$, the BMS$_{3}$ generators then emerge as composites built out from the chiral (holomorphic) components of the stress-energy tensor, $T$ and $\bar{T}$, closing in the Poisson brackets at equal time slices. Nevertheless, supertranslation generators do not span Noetherian symmetries. BMS$_{3}$ becomes a bona fide symmetry once the CFT$_{2}$ is marginally deformed by the addition of a $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ term to the Hamiltonian. The generic deformed theory is manifestly invariant under diffeomorphisms and local scalings, but it is no longer a CFT$_{2}$ because its energy and momentum densities fulfill the BMS$_{3}$ algebra. The deformation can also be described through the original CFT$_{2}$ on a curved metric whose Beltrami differentials are determined by the variation of the deformed Hamiltonian with respect to $T$ and $\bar{T}$. BMS$_{3}$ symmetries then arise from deformed conformal Killing equations, corresponding to diffeomorphisms that preserve the deformed metric and stress-energy tensor up to local scalings. As an example, we briefly address the deformation of $\mathrm{N}$ free bosons, which coincides with ultra-relativistic limits only for $\mathrm{N}=1$. Furthermore, Cardy formula and the S-modular transformation of the torus become mapped to their corresponding BMS$_{3}$ (or flat) versions.

Hypersymmetric extensions of Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity in (2+1) dimensions

We present a consistent way of coupling three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity theory with massless spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ gauge fields. We first introduce the simplest hyper-Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity containing two massless spin-2 fields coupled with a massless Majorana fermion of spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ and whose novel underlying superalgebra is explicitly constructed. Then, we present three alternative hypersymmetric extensions of the Maxwell algebra which are shown to emerge from the In\"on\"u-Wigner contraction procedure of precise combinations of the $\mathfrak{osp}\left(1|4\right)$ and the $\mathfrak{sp}\left(4\right)$ algebras. This allow us to construct distinct types of hyper-Maxwell Chern-Simons theories that extend to include generically interacting non-propagating spin-$4$ fields accompanied by one or two spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ gauge fields.

The (super)conformal BMS$_3$ algebra

The conformal extension of the BMS$_{3}$ algebra is constructed. Apart from an infinite number of 'superdilatations,' in order to incorporate 'superspecial conformal transformations,' the commutator of the latter with supertranslations strictly requires the presence of nonlinear terms in the remaining generators. The algebra appears to be very rigid, in the sense that its central extensions as well as the nonlinear terms coefficients become determined by the central charge of the Virasoro subalgebra. The wedge algebra corresponds to the conformal group in three spacetime dimensions $SO(3,2)$, so that the full algebra can also be interpreted as an infinite-dimensional nonlinear extension of the AdS$_{4}$ algebra with nontrivial central charges. Moreover, since the Lorentz subalgebra ($sl(2,R)$) is non-principally embedded within the conformal (wedge) algebra, according to the conformal weight of the generators, the conformal extension of BMS$_{3}$ can be further regarded as a $W_{(2,2,2,1)}$ algebra. An explicit canonical realization of the conformal extension of BMS$_{3}$ is then shown to emerge from the asymptotic structure of conformal gravity in 3D, endowed with a new set of boundary conditions. The supersymmetric extension is also briefly addressed.

Integrable systems with BMS$_{3}$ Poisson structure and the dynamics of locally flat spacetimes

We construct a hierarchy of integrable systems whose Poisson structure corresponds to the BMS$_{3}$ algebra, and then discuss its description in terms of the Riemannian geometry of locally flat spacetimes in three dimensions. The analysis is performed in terms of two-dimensional gauge fields for $isl(2,R)$. Although the algebra is not semisimple, the formulation can be carried out à la Drinfeld-Sokolov because it admits a nondegenerate invariant bilinear metric. The hierarchy turns out to be bi-Hamiltonian, labeled by a nonnegative integer $k$, and defined through a suitable generalization of the Gelfand-Dikii polynomials. The symmetries of the hierarchy are explicitly found. For $k\geq 1$, the corresponding conserved charges span an infinite-dimensional Abelian algebra without central extensions, and they are in involution; while in the case of $k=0$, they generate the BMS$_{3}$ algebra. In the special case of $k=1$, by virtue of a suitable field redefinition and time scaling, the field equations are shown to be equivalent to a specific type of the Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV systems. For $k\geq 1$, the hierarchy also includes the so-called perturbed KdV equations as a particular case. A wide class of analytic solutions is also explicitly constructed for a generic value of $k$. Remarkably, the dynamics can be fully geometrized so as to describe the evolution of spacelike surfaces embedded in locally flat spacetimes. Indeed, General Relativity in 3D can be endowed with a suitable set of boundary conditions, so that the Einstein equations precisely reduce to the ones of the hierarchy aforementioned. The symmetries of the integrable systems then arise as diffeomorphisms that preserve the asymptotic form of the spacetime metric, and therefore, they become Noetherian. The infinite set of conserved charges is recovered from the corresponding surface integrals in the canonical approach.

Log corrections to entropy of three dimensional black holes with soft hair

We calculate log corrections to the entropy of three-dimensional black holes with "soft hairy" boundary conditions. Their thermodynamics possesses some special features that preclude a naive direct evaluation of these corrections, so we follow two different approaches. The first one exploits that the BTZ black hole belongs to the spectrum of Brown-Henneaux as well as soft hairy boundary conditions, so that the respective log corrections are related through a suitable change of the thermodynamic ensemble. In the second approach the analogue of modular invariance is considered for dual theories with anisotropic scaling of Lifshitz type with dynamical exponent z at the boundary. On the gravity side such scalings arise for KdV-type boundary conditions, which provide a specific 1-parameter family of multi-trace deformations of the usual AdS3/CFT2 setup, with Brown-Henneaux corresponding to z=1 and soft hairy boundary conditions to the limiting case z=0. Both approaches agree in the case of BTZ black holes for any non-negative z. Finally, for soft hairy boundary conditions we show that not only the leading term, but also the log corrections to the entropy of black flowers endowed with affine u(1) soft hair charges exclusively depend on the zero modes and hence coincide with the ones for BTZ black holes.

Soft hairy horizons in three spacetime dimensions

We discuss some aspects of soft hairy black holes and a new kind of "soft hairy cosmologies", including a detailed derivation of the metric formulation, results on flat space, and novel observations concerning the entropy. Remarkably, like in the case with negative cosmological constant, we find that the asymptotic symmetries for locally flat spacetimes with a horizon are governed by infinite copies of the Heisenberg algebra that generate soft hair descendants. It is also shown that the generators of the three-dimensional Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra arise from composite operators of the affine u(1) currents through a twisted Sugawara-like construction. We then discuss entropy macroscopically, thermodynamically and microscopically and discover that a microscopic formula derived recently for boundary conditions associated to the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy fits perfectly our results for entropy and ground state energy. We conclude with a comparison to related approaches.

Higher Spin Black Holes with Soft Hair

We construct a new set of boundary conditions for higher spin gravity, inspired by a recent "soft Heisenberg hair"-proposal for General Relativity on three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter. The asymptotic symmetry algebra consists of a set of affine $\hat u(1)$ current algebras. Its associated canonical charges generate higher spin soft hair. We focus first on the spin-3 case and then extend some of our main results to spin-$N$, many of which resemble the spin-2 results: the generators of the asymptotic $W_3$ algebra naturally emerge from composite operators of the $\hat u(1)$ charges through a twisted Sugawara construction; our boundary conditions ensure regularity of the Euclidean solutions space independently of the values of the charges; solutions, which we call "higher spin black flowers", are stationary but not necessarily spherically symmetric. Finally, we derive the entropy of higher spin black flowers, and find that for the branch that is continuously connected to the BTZ black hole, it depends only on the affine purely gravitational zero modes. Using our map to $W$-algebra currents we recover well-known expressions for higher spin entropy. We also address higher spin black flowers in the metric formalism and achieve full consistency with previous results.

Boundary conditions for General Relativity on AdS$_{3}$ and the KdV hierarchy

It is shown that General Relativity with negative cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions admits a new family of boundary conditions being labeled by a nonnegative integer $k$. Gravitational excitations are then described by "boundary gravitons" that fulfill the equations of the $k$-th element of the KdV hierarchy. In particular, $k=0$ corresponds to the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions so that excitations are described by chiral movers. In the case of $k=1$, the boundary gravitons fulfill the KdV equation and the asymptotic symmetry algebra turns out to be infinite-dimensional, abelian and devoid of central extensions. The latter feature also holds for the remaining cases that describe the hierarchy ($k>1$). Our boundary conditions then provide a gravitational dual of two noninteracting left and right KdV movers, and hence, boundary gravitons possess anisotropic Lifshitz scaling with dynamical exponent $z=2k+1$. Remarkably, despite spacetimes solving the field equations are locally AdS, they possess anisotropic scaling being induced by the choice of boundary conditions. As an application, the entropy of a rotating BTZ black hole is precisely recovered from a suitable generalization of the Cardy formula that is compatible with the anisotropic scaling of the chiral KdV movers at the boundary, in which the energy of AdS spacetime with our boundary conditions depends on $z$ and plays the role of the central charge. The extension of our boundary conditions to the case of higher spin gravity and its link with different classes of integrable systems is also briefly addressed.

Soft Heisenberg hair on black holes in three dimensions

Three-dimensional Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant admits stationary black holes that are not necessarily spherically symmetric. We propose boundary conditions for the near horizon region of these black holes that lead to a surprisingly simple near horizon symmetry algebra consisting of two affine u(1) current algebras. The symmetry algebra is essentially equivalent to the Heisenberg algebra. The associated charges give a specific example of "soft hair" on the horizon, as defined by Hawking, Perry and Strominger. We show that soft hair does not contribute to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes and "black flower" generalizations. From the near horizon perspective the conformal generators at asymptotic infinity appear as composite operators, which we interpret in the spirit of black hole complementarity. Another remarkable feature of our boundary conditions is that they are singled out by requiring that the whole spectrum is compatible with regularity at the horizon, regardless the value of the global charges like mass or angular momentum. Finally, we address black hole microstates and generalizations to cosmological horizons.

Asymptotically flat black holes and gravitational waves in three-dimensional massive gravity

Different classes of exact solutions for the BHT massive gravity theory are constructed and analyzed. We focus in the special case of the purely quadratic Lagrangian, whose field equations are irreducibly of fourth order and are known to admit asymptotically locally flat black holes endowed with gravitational hair. The first class corresponds to a Kerr-Schild deformation of Minkowski spacetime along a covariantly constant null vector. As in the case of General Relativity, the field equations linearize so that the solution can be easily shown to be described by four arbitrary functions of a single null coordinate. These solutions can be regarded as a new sort of pp-waves. The second class is obtained from a deformation of the static asymptotically locally flat black hole, that goes along the spacelike (angular) Killing vector. Remarkably, although the deformation is not of Kerr-Schild type, the field equations also linearize, and hence the generic solution can be readily integrated. It is neither static nor spherically symmetric, being described by two integration constants and two arbitrary functions of the angular coordinate. In the static case it describes "black flowers" whose event horizons break the spherical symmetry. The generic time-dependent solution appears to describe a graviton that moves away from a black flower. Despite the asymptotic behaviour of these solutions at null infinity is relaxed with respect to the one for General Relativity, the asymptotic symmetries coincide. However, the algebra of the conserved charges corresponds to BMS$_{3}$, but devoid of central extensions. The "dynamical black flowers" are shown to possess a finite energy. The surface integrals that define the global charges also turn out to be useful in the description of the thermodynamics of solutions with event horizons.

Extended anti-de Sitter Hypergravity in $2+1$ Dimensions and Hypersymmetry Bounds

In a recent paper (JHEP {\bf 1508} (2015) 021), we have investigated hypersymmetry bounds in the context of simple anti-de Sitter hypergravity in $2+1$ dimensions. We showed that these bounds involved non linearly the spin-$2$ and spin-$4$ charges, and were saturated by a class of extremal black holes, which are $\frac14$-hypersymmetric. We continue the analysis here by considering $(M,N)$-extended anti-de Sitter hypergravity models, based on the superalgebra $osp(M \vert 4) \oplus osp(N \vert 4)$. The asymptotic symmetry superalgebra is then the direct sum of two-copies of a $W$-superalgebra that contains $so(M)$ (or $so(N)$) Kac-Moody currents of conformal weight $1$, fermionic generators of conformal weight $5/2$ and bosonic generators of conformal weight $4$ in addition to the Virasoro generators. The nonlinear hypersymmetry bounds on the conserved charges are derived and shown to be saturated by a class of extreme hypersymmetric black holes which we explicitly construct.

Asymptotically locally flat spacetimes and dynamical black flowers in three dimensions

The theory of massive gravity proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend is considered in the special case of the pure irreducibly fourth order quadratic Lagrangian. It is shown that the asymptotically locally flat black holes of this theory can be consistently deformed to "black flowers" that are no longer spherically symmetric. Moreover, we construct radiating spacetimes settling down to these black flowers in the far future. The generic case can be shown to fit within a relaxed set of asymptotic conditions as compared to the ones of general relativity at null infinity, while the asymptotic symmetries remain the same. Conserved charges as surface integrals at null infinity are constructed following a covariant approach, and their algebra represents BMS$_{3}$, but without central extensions. For solutions possessing an event horizon, we derive the first law of thermodynamics from these surface integrals.

Asymptotic structure of the Einstein-Maxwell theory on AdS$_{3}$

The asymptotic structure of AdS spacetimes in the context of General Relativity coupled to the Maxwell field in three spacetime dimensions is analyzed. Although the fall-off of the fields is relaxed with respect to that of Brown and Henneaux, the variation of the canonical generators associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors can be shown to be finite once required to span the Lie derivative of the fields. The corresponding surface integrals then acquire explicit contributions from the electromagnetic field, and become well-defined provided they fulfill suitable integrability conditions, implying that the leading terms of the asymptotic form of the electromagnetic field are functionally related. Consequently, for a generic choice of boundary conditions, the asymptotic symmetries are broken down to $\mathbb{R}\otimes U\left(1\right)\otimes U\left(1\right)$. Nonetheless, requiring compatibility of the boundary conditions with one of the asymptotic Virasoro symmetries, singles out the set to be characterized by an arbitrary function of a single variable, whose precise form depends on the choice of the chiral copy. Remarkably, requiring the asymptotic symmetries to contain the full conformal group selects a very special set of boundary conditions that is labeled by a unique constant parameter, so that the algebra of the canonical generators is given by the direct sum of two copies of the Virasoro algebra with the standard central extension and $U\left(1\right)$. This special set of boundary conditions makes the energy spectrum of electrically charged rotating black holes to be well-behaved.
