The Partonic Nature of Instantons

In both Yang-Mills theories and sigma models, instantons are endowed with degrees of freedom associated to their scale size and orientation. It has long been conjectured that these degrees of freedom have a dual interpretation as the positions of partonic constituents of the instanton. These conjectures are usually framed in d=3+1 and d=1+1 dimensions respectively where the partons are supposed to be responsible for confinement and other strong coupling phenomena. We revisit this partonic interpretation of instantons in the context of d=4+1 and d=2+1 dimensions. Here the instantons are particle-like solitons and the theories are non-renormalizable. We present an explicit and calculable model in d=2+1 dimensions where the single soliton in the CP^N sigma-model can be shown to be a multi-particle state whose partons are identified with the ultra-violet degrees of freedom which render the theory well-defined at high energies. We introduce a number of methods which reveal the partons inside the soliton, including deforming the sigma model and a dual version of the Bogomolnyi equations. We conjecture that partons inside Yang-Mills instantons hold the key to understanding the ultra-violet completion of five-dimensional gauge theories.

Non-Abelian Berry Phases and BPS Monopoles

We study a simple quantum mechanical model of a spinning particle moving on a sphere in the presence of a magnetic field. The system has two ground states. As the magnetic field is varied, the ground states mix through a non-Abelian Berry phase. We show that this Berry phase is the path ordered exponential of the smooth SU(2) 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. We further show that, by adjusting a potential on the sphere, the monopole becomes BPS and obeys the Bogomolnyi equations. For this choice of potential, it turns out that there is a hidden supersymmetry underlying the system and the Bogomolnyi equations are analogous to the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa. We conjecture that the Bogomolnyi equations also govern the Berry phase of N=(2,2) supersymmetric sigma models with other target spaces.

Berry Phase and Supersymmetry

We study the constraints of supersymmetry on the non-Abelian holonomy given by U=P exp(i\int A), the path-ordered exponential of a connection A. For theories with four supercharges, we show that A satisfies the tt* equations if it is a function of chiral multiplets. In contrast, when A is a function of vector multiplets, it satisfies the Bogomolnyi monopole equations. We describe applications of these results to the Berry connection in supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

The Geometric Phase in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We explore the geometric phase in N=(2,2) supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The Witten index ensures the existence of degenerate ground states, resulting in a non-Abelian Berry connection. We exhibit a non-renormalization theorem which prohibits the connection from receiving perturbative corrections. However, we show that it does receive corrections from BPS instantons. We compute the one-instanton contribution to the Berry connection for the massive CP^1 sigma-model as the potential is varied. This system has two ground states and the associated Berry connection is the smooth SU(2) 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole.

Quantum Vortex Strings: A Review

The quantum worldsheet dynamics of vortex strings contains information about the 4d non-Abelian gauge theory in which the string lives. Here I tell this story. The string worldsheet theory is typically some variant of the CP^{N-1} sigma-model, describing the orientation of the string in a U(N) gauge group. Qualitative parallels between 2d sigma-models and 4d non-Abelian gauge theories have been known since the 1970s. The vortex string provides a quantitative link between the two. In 4d theories with N=2 supersymmetry, the exact BPS spectrum of the worldsheet coincides with the bulk spectrum in 4d. Moreover, by tuning parameters, the CP^{N-1} sigma-model can be coaxed to flow to an interacting conformal fixed point which is related to the 4d Argyres-Douglas fixed point. For theories with N=1 supersymmetry, the worldsheet theory suffers dynamical supersymmetry breaking and, more interestingly, supersymmetry restoration, in a way which captures the physics of Seiberg's quantum deformed moduli space.

Instantons, Fermions and Chern-Simons Terms

In five spacetime dimensions, instantons are finite energy, solitonic particles. We describe the dynamics of these objects in the presence of a Chern-Simons interaction. For U(N) instantons, we show that the 5d Chern-Simons term induces a corresponding Chern-Simons term in the ADHM quantum mechanics. For SU(N) instantons, we provide a description in terms of geodesic motion on the instanton moduli space, modified by the presence of a magnetic field. We show that this magnetic field is equal to the first Chern character of an index bundle. All of these results are derived by a simple method which follows the fate of zero modes as fermions are introduced, made heavy, and subsequently integrated out.

The Dynamics of Chern-Simons Vortices

We study vortex dynamics in three-dimensional theories with Chern-Simons interactions. The dynamics is governed by motion on the moduli space M in the presence of a magnetic field. For Abelian vortices, the magnetic field is shown to be the Ricci form over M; for non-Abelian vortices, it is the first Chern character of a suitable index bundle. We derive these results by integrating out massive fermions and following the fate of their zero modes.

Membranes on an Orbifold

We harvest clues to aid with the interpretation of the recently discovered N=8 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory with SO(4) gauge symmetry. The theory is argued to describe two membranes moving in the orbifold R8/Z2. At level k=1 and k=2, the classical moduli space M coincides with the infra-red moduli space of SO(4) and SO(5) super Yang-Mills theory respectively. For higher Chern-Simons level, the moduli space is a quotient of M. At a generic point in the moduli space, the massive spectrum is proportional to the area of the triangle formed by the two membranes and the orbifold fixed point.

DBI in the Sky

We analyze the spectrum of density perturbations generated in models of the recently discovered "D-cceleration" mechanism of inflation. In this scenario, strong coupling quantum field theoretic effects sum to provide a DBI-like action for the inflaton. We show that the model has a strict lower bound on the non-Gaussianity of the CMBR power spectrum at an observable level, and is thus falsifiable. This in particular observationally distinguishes this mechanism from traditional slow roll inflation generated by weakly interacting scalar fields. The model also favors a large observable tensor component to the CMBR spectrum.

The Geometric Phase and Gravitational Precession of D-Branes

We study Berry's phase in the D0-D4-brane system. When a D0-brane moves in the background of D4-branes, the first excited states undergo a holonomy described by a non-Abelian Berry connection. At weak coupling this is an SU(2) connection over R^5, known as the Yang monopole. At strong coupling, the holonomy is recast as the classical gravitational precession of a spinning particle. The Berry connection is the spin connection of the near-horizon limit of the D4-branes, which is a continuous deformation of the Yang and anti-Yang monopole.

The Berry Phase of D0-Branes

We study SU(2) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with N=2,4,8 and 16 supercharges. This describes the non-relativistic dynamics of a pair of D0-branes moving in d=3,4,6 and 10 spacetime dimensions respectively. We show that as the D0-branes orbit, states undergo a Berry holonomy described by the four Hopf maps. For the N=2 theory, the associated Hopf map is the Mobius bundle and its effect is to turn the D0-branes into anyons with exchange statistics +i and -i. For the N=4,8 and 16 theories, the Hopf maps give rise to Berry connections that are familiar to physicists: the U(1) Dirac monopole; the SU(2) Yang monopole; and the SO(8) octonionic monopole.

The Quantum Dynamics of Heterotic Vortex Strings

We study the quantum dynamics of vortex strings in N=1 SQCD with U(N_c) gauge group and N_f=N_c quarks. The classical worldsheet of the string has N=(0,2) supersymmetry, but this is broken by quantum effects. We show how the pattern of supersymmetry breaking and restoration on the worldsheet captures the quantum dynamics of the underlying 4d theory. We also find qualitative matching of the meson spectrum in 4d and the spectrum on the worldsheet.

Aspects of Non-Abelian Gauge Dynamics in Two-Dimensional N=(2,2) Theories

We study various aspects of N=(2,2) supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theories in two dimensions, with applications to string vacua. We compute the Witten index of SU(k) SQCD with N>0 flavors with twisted masses; the result is presented as the solution to a simple combinatoric problem. We further claim that the infra-red fixed point of SU(k) gauge theory with N massless flavors is non-singular if (k,N) passes a related combinatoric criterion. These results are applied to the study of a class of U(k) linear sigma models which, in one phase, reduce to sigma models on Calabi-Yau manifolds in Grassmannians. We show that there are multiple singularities in the middle of the one-dimensional Kahler moduli space, in contrast to the Abelian models. This result precisely matches the complex structure singularities of the proposed mirrors. In one specific example, we study the physics in the other phase of the Kahler moduli space and find that it reduces to a sigma model for a second Calabi-Yau manifold which is not birationally equivalent to the first. This proves a mathematical conjecture of Rodland.

Superconformal Vortex Strings

We study the low-energy dynamics of semi-classical vortex strings living above Argyres-Douglas superconformal field theories. The worldsheet theory of the string is shown to be a deformation of the CP^N model which flows in the infra-red to a superconformal minimal model. The scaling dimensions of chiral primary operators are determined and the dimensions of the associated relevant perturbations on the worldsheet and in the four dimensional bulk are found to agree. The vortex string thereby provides a map between the A-series of N=2 superconformal theories in two and four dimensions.

Instantons and Emergent AdS_3 x S^3 Geometry

Two dimensional N=(4,4) gauge theories flow to interacting superconformal field theories on their Higgs branch. We examine worldsheet instantons in these theories through the eyes of a D-brane construction. The effective instanton partition function is shown to reveal an emergent background AdS_3 x S^3 geometry.

D-Branes in Field Theory

Certain gauge theories in four dimensions are known to admit semi-classical D-brane solitons. These are domain walls on which vortex flux tubes may end. The purpose of this paper is to develop an open-string description of these D-branes. The dynamics of the domain walls is shown to be governed by a Chern-Simons-Higgs theory which, at the quantum level, captures the classical "closed string" scattering of domain wall solitons.

TASI Lectures on Solitons

These lectures cover aspects of solitons with focus on applications to the quantum dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories and string theory. The lectures consist of four sections, each dealing with a different soliton. We start with instantons and work down in co-dimension to monopoles, vortices and, eventually, domain walls. Emphasis is placed on the moduli space of solitons and, in particular, on the web of connections that links solitons of different types. The D-brane realization of the ADHM and Nahm construction for instantons and monopoles is reviewed, together with related constructions for vortices and domain walls. Each lecture ends with a series of vignettes detailing the roles solitons play in the quantum dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories in various dimensions. This includes applications to the AdS/CFT correspondence, little string theory, S-duality, cosmic strings, and the quantitative correspondence between 2d sigma models and 4d gauge theories.
