Quantum chimera states

We study a theoretical model of closed quasi-hermitian chain of spins which exhibits quantum analogues of chimera states, i.e. long life classical states for which a part of an oscillator chain presents an ordered dynamics whereas another part presents a disordered chaotic dynamics. For the quantum analogue, the chimera behavior deals with the entanglement between the spins of the chain. We discuss the entanglement properties, quantum chaos, quantum disorder and semi-classical similarity of our quantum chimera system. The quantum chimera concept is novel and induces new perspectives concerning the entanglement of multipartite systems.

Information transmission and control in a chaotically kicked spin chain

We study spin chains submitted to disturbed kick trains described by classical dynamical processes. The spin chains are coupled by Heisenberg and Ising-Z models. We consider chaotic processes by using the kick irregularity in the multipartite system (the spin chain). We show that the both couplings transmit differently the chaos disorder along the spin chain but conserve the horizon of coherence (when the disorder into the kick bath is transmitted to the spin chain). An example of information transmission between the spins of the chain coupled by a Heisenberg interaction shows the interest of the horizon of coherence. The use of some chosen stationary kicks disturbed by a chaotic environment allows to modify the information transmission between the spins and to perform a free control during the horizon of coherence.

Adiabatic theorem for bipartite quantum systems in weak coupling limit

We study the adiabatic approximation of the dynamics of a bipartite quantum system with respect to one of the components, when the coupling between its two components is perturbative. We show that the density matrix of the considered component is described by adiabatic transport formulae exhibiting operator-valued geometric and dynamical phases. The present results can be used to study the quantum control of the dynamics of qubits and of open quantum systems where the two components are the system and its environment. We treat two examples, the control of an atomic qubit interacting with another one and the control of a spin in the middle of a Heisenberg spin chain.

Analyses of the transmission of the disorder from a disturbed environment to a spin chain

We study spin chains submitted to disturbed kick trains described by classical dynamical processes. The spin chains are described by Heisenberg and Ising models. We consider decoherence, entanglement and relaxation processes induced by the kick irregularity in the multipartite system (the spin chain). We show that the different couplings transmit the disorder along the chain differently and also to each spin density matrix with different efficiencies. In order to analyze and to interpret the observed effects we use a semi-classical analysis across the Husimi distribution. It consists to consider the classical spin orientation movements. A possibility of conserving the order into the spin chain is finally analyzed.

Adiabatic quantum control hampered by entanglement

We study defects in adiabatic control of a quantum system caused by the entanglement of the system with its environment. Such defects can be assimilated to decoherence processes due to perturbative couplings between the system and the environment. To analyse these effects, we propose a geometric approach based on a field theory on the control manifold issued from the higher gauge theory associated with the $C^*$-geometric phases. We study a visualization method to analyse the defects of adiabatic control based on the drawing of the field strengths of the gauge theory. To illustrate the present methodology we consider the example of the atomic STIRAP (stimulated Raman adiabatic passage) where the controlled atom is entangled with another atom. We study the robustness of the STIRAP effect when the controlled atom is entangled with another one.

Almost quantum adiabatic dynamics and generalized time dependent wave operators

We consider quantum dynamics for which the strict adiabatic approximation fails but which do not escape too far from the adiabatic limit. To treat these systems we introduce a generalisation of the time dependent wave operator theory which is usually used to treat dynamics which do not escape too far from an initial subspace called the active space. Our generalisation is based on a time dependent adiabatic deformation of the active space. The geometric phases associated with the almost adiabatic representation are also derived. We use this formalism to study the adiabaticity of a dynamics surrounding an exceptional point of a non-hermitian hamiltonian. We show that the generalized time dependent wave operator can be used to correct easily the adiabatic approximation which is very unperfect in this situation.

Decoherence, relaxation and chaos in a kicked-spin ensemble

We study the dynamics of a quantum spin ensemble controlled by trains of ultrashort pulses. To model disturbances of the kicks, we consider that the spins are submitted to different kick trains which follow regular, random, stochastic or chaotic dynamical processes. These are described by dynamical systems on a torus. We study the quantum decoherence and the population relaxation of the spin ensemble induced by these classical dynamical processes disturbing the kick trains. For chaotic kick trains we show that the decoherence and the relaxation processes exhibit a signature of chaos directly related to the Lyapunov exponents of the dynamical system. This signature is a horizon of coherence, i.e. a preliminary duration without decoherence followed by a rapid decoherence process.

Geometric phases in quantum control disturbed by classical stochastic processes

We describe the geometric (Berry) phases arising when some quantum systems are driven by control classical parameters but also by outer classical stochastic processes (as for example classical noises). The total geometric phase is then divided into an usual geometric phase associated with the control parameters and a second geometric phase associated with the stochastic processes. The geometric structure in which these geometric phases take place is a composite bundle (and not an usual principal bundle), which is explicitely built in this paper. We explain why the composite bundle structure is the more natural framework to study this problem. Finally we treat a very simple example of a two level atom driven by a phase modulated laser field with a phase instability described by a gaussian white noise. In particular we compute the average geometric phase issued from the noise.

C\ast-geometric phase for mixed states: entanglement, decoherence and spin system

We study a kind of geometric phases for entangled quantum systems, and particularly a spin driven by a magnetic field and entangled with another spin. The new kind of geometric phase is based on an analogy between open quantum systems and dissipative quantum systems which uses a C\ast-module structure. We show that the system presents from the viewpoint of their geometric phases, two behaviours. The first one is identical to the behaviour of an isolated spin driven by a magnetic field, as the problem originally treated by Berry. The second one is specific to the decoherence process. The gauge structures induced by these geometric phases are then similar to a magnetic monopole gauge structure for the first case, and can be viewed as a kind of instanton gauge structure for the second case. We study the role of these geometric phases in the evolution of a mixed state, particularly by focusing on the evolution of the density matrix coherence. We investigate also the relation between the geometric phase of the mixed state of one of the entangled systems and the geometric phase of the bipartite system.

The role of the geometric phases in adiabatic populations tracking for non-hermitian hamiltonians

We show that the definition of instantaneous eigenstate populations for a dynamical non-self-adjoint system is not obvious. The naive direct extension of the definition used for the self-adjoint case leads to inconsistencies; the resulting artifacts can induce a false inversion of population or a false adiabaticity. We show that the inconsistency can be avoided by introducing geometric phases in another possible definition of populations. An example is given which demonstrates both the anomalous effects and their removal by our approach.

Constrained Adiabatic Trajectory Method (CATM): a global integrator for explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonians

The Constrained Adiabatic Trajectory Method (CATM) is reexamined as an integrator for the Schrödinger equation. An initial discussion places the CATM in the context of the different integrators used in the literature for time-independent or explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonians. The emphasis is put on adiabatic processes and within this adiabatic framework the interdependence between the CATM, the wave operator, the Floquet and the (t,t') theories is presented in detail. Two points are then more particularly analysed and illustrated by a numerical calculation describing the $H_2^+$ ion submitted to a laser pulse. The first point is the ability of the CATM to dilate the Hamiltonian spectrum and thus to make the perturbative treatment of the equations defining the wave function possible, possibly by using a Krylov subspace approach as a complement. The second point is the ability of the CATM to handle extremely complex time-dependencies, such as those which appear when interaction representations are used to integrate the system.

A new kind of geometric phases in open quantum systems and higher gauge theory

A new approach extending the concept of geometric phases to adiabatic open quantum systems described by density matrices (mixed states) is proposed. This new approach is based on an analogy between open quantum systems and dissipative quantum systems which uses a $C^*$-module structure. The gauge theory associated with these new geometric phases does not take place in an usual principal bundle structure but in an higher structure, a categorical principal bundle (so-called principal 2-bundle or non-abelian bundle gerbes) which is sometimes a non-abelian twisted bundle. This higher degree in the gauge theory is a geometrical manifestation of the decoherence induced by the environment on the quantum system.

Holonomy of a principal composite bundle connection, non-abelian geometric phases and gauge theory of gravity

We show that the holonomy of a connection defined on a principal composite bundle is related by a non-abelian Stokes theorem to the composition of the holonomies associated with the connections of the component bundles of the composite. We apply this formalism to describe the non-abelian geometric phase (when the geometric phase generator does not commute with the dynamical phase generator). We find then an assumption to obtain a new kind of separation between the dynamical and the geometric phases. We also apply this formalism to the gauge theory of gravity in the presence of a Dirac spinor field in order to decompose the holonomy of the Lorentz connection into holonomies of the linear connection and of the Cartan connection.

Geometric phases in adiabatic Floquet theory, abelian gerbes and Cheon's anholonomy

We study the geometric phase phenomenon in the context of the adiabatic Floquet theory (the so-called the $(t,t')$ Floquet theory). A double integration appears in the geometric phase formula because of the presence of two time variables within the theory. We show that the geometric phases are then identified with horizontal lifts of surfaces in an abelian gerbe with connection, rather than with horizontal lifts of curves in an abelian principal bundle. This higher degree in the geometric phase gauge theory is related to the appearance of changes in the Floquet blocks at the transitions between two local charts of the parameter manifold. We present the physical example of a kicked two-level system where these changes are involved via a Cheon's anholonomy. In this context, the analogy between the usual geometric phase theory and the classical field theory also provides an analogy with the classical string theory.

The cosmological constant and the coincidence problem in a new cosmological interpretation of the universal constant c

In a recent paper (Vigoureux et al. Int. J. Theor. Phys. 47:928, 2007) it has been suggested that the velocity of light and the expansion of the universe are two aspects of one single concept connecting space and time in the expanding universe. It has then be shown that solving Friedmann's equations with that interpretation (and keeping c = constant) can explain number of unnatural features of the standard cosmology (for example: the flatness problem, the problem of the observed uniformity in term of temperature and density of the cosmological background radiation, the small-scale inhomogeneity problem...) and leads to reconsider the Hubble diagram of distance moduli and redshifts as obtained from recent observations of type Ia supernovae without having to need an accelerating universe. In the present work we examine the problem of the cosmological constant. We show that our model can exactly generate $Λ$ (equation of state $P_φ= - ρ_φc^2$ with $Λ\propto R^{-2}$) contrarily to the standard model which cannot generate it exactly. We also show how it can solve the so-called cosmic coincidence problem.
