Inductive limit algebras from periodic weighted shifts on Fock space

Non-commutative multivariable versions of weighted shift operators arise naturally as `weighted' left creation operators acting on the Fock space Hilbert space. We identify a natural notion of periodicity for these $N$-tuples, and then find a family of inductive limit algebras determined by the periodic weighted shifts which can be regarded as non-commutative multivariable generalizations of the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras. We establish this by proving that the C*-algebras generated by shifts of a given period are isomorphic to full matrix algebras over Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras. This leads to an isomorphism theorem which parallels the Bunce-Deddens and UHF classification scheme.

Isometric dilations of non-commuting finite rank $n$-tuples

A contractive $n$-tuple $A=(A_1,...,A_n)$ has a minimal joint isometric dilation $S=(S_1,...,S_n)$ where the $S_i$'s are isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. This determines a representation of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra. When $A$ acts on a finite dimensional space, the \wot-closed nonself-adjoint algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ generated by $S$ is completely described in terms of the properties of $A$. This provides complete unitary invariants for the corresponding representations. In addition, we show that the algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ is always hyper-reflexive. In the last section, we describe similarity invariants. In particular, an $n$-tuple $B$ of $d\times d$ matrices is similar to an irreducible $n$-tuple $A$ if and only if a certain finite set of polynomials vanish on $B$.

A class of limit algebras associated with directed graphs

Every directed graph defines a Hilbert space and a family of weighted shifts that act on the space. We identify a natural notion of periodicity for such shifts and study their C*-algebras. We prove the algebras generated by all shifts of a fixed period are of Cuntz-Krieger and Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger type. The limit C*-algebras determined by an increasing sequence of positive integers, each dividing the next, are proved to be isomorphic to Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and the linking maps are shown to arise as factor maps. We derive a characterization of simplicity and compute the $K$-groups for these algebras. We prove a classification theorem for the class of algebras generated by simple loop graphs.

A quantum computing primer for operator theorists

This is an exposition of some of the aspects of quantum computation and quantum information that have connections with operator theory. After a brief introduction, we discuss quantum algorithms. We outline basic properties of quantum channels, or equivalently, completely positive trace preserving maps. The main theorems for quantum error detection and correction are presented and we conclude with a description of a particular passive method of quantum error correction.

The $H^\infty$ algebras of higher rank graphs

We begin the study of a new class of operator algebras that arise from higher rank graphs. Every higher rank graph generates a Fock space Hilbert space and creation operators which are partial isometries acting on the space. We call the weak operator topology closed algebra generated by these operators a 'higher rank semigroupoid algebra'. A number of examples are discussed in detail, including the single vertex case and higher rank cycle graphs. In particular the cycle graph algebras are identified as matricial multivariable function algebras. We obtain reflexivity for a wide class of graphs and characterize semisimplicity in terms of the underlying graph.

Universal collective rotation channels and quantum error correction

We present and investigate a new class of quantum channels, what we call `universal collective rotation channels', that includes the well-known class of collective rotation channels as a special case. The fixed point set and noise commutant coincide for a channel in this class. Computing the precise structure of this C*-algebra is a core problem in a particular noiseless subsystem method of quantum error correction. We prove that there is an abundance of noiseless subsystems for every channel in this class and that Young tableaux combinatorics can be used to explicitly compute these subsystems.

Free Semigroupoid Algebras

Every countable directed graph generates a Fock space Hilbert space and a family of partial isometries. These operators also arise from the left regular representations of free semigroupoids derived from directed graphs. We develop a structure theory for the weak operator topology closed algebras generated by these representations, which we call free semigroupoid algebras. We characterize semisimplicity in terms of the graph and show explicitly in the case of finite graphs how the Jacobson radical is determined. We provide a diverse collection of examples including; algebras with free behaviour, and examples which can be represented as matrix function algebras. We show how these algebras can be presented and decomposed in terms of amalgamated free products. We determine the commutant, consider invariant subspaces, obtain a Beurling theorem for them, conduct an eigenvalue analysis, give an elementary proof of reflexivity, and discuss hyper-reflexivity. Our main theorem shows the graph to be a complete unitary invariant for the algebra. This classification theorem makes use of an analysis of unitarily implemented automorphisms. We give a graph-theoretic description of when these algebras are partly free, in the sense that they contain a copy of a free semigroup algebra.

Applications of the Wold decomposition to the study of row contractions associated with directed graphs

Based on a Wold decomposition for families of partial isometries and projections of Cuntz-Krieger-Toeplitz-type, we extend several fundamental theorems from the case of single vertex graphs to the general case of countable directed graphs with no sinks. We prove a Szego-type factorization theorem for CKT families, which leads to information on the structure of the unit ball in free semigroupoid algebras, and show that joint similarity implies joint unitary equivalence for such families. For each graph we prove a generalization of von Neumann's inequality which applies to row contractions of operators on Hilbert space which are related to the graph in a natural way. This yields a functional calculus determined by quiver algebras and free semigroupoid algebras. We establish a generalization of Coburn's theorem for the C*-algebra of a CKT family, and prove a universality theorem for C*-algebras generated by these families. In both cases, the C*-algebras generated by quiver algebras play the universal role.

Partly Free Algebras from Directed Graphs

We say that a nonselfadjoint operator algebra is partly free if it contains a free semigroup algebra. Motivation for such algebras occurs in the setting of what we call free semigroupoid algebras. These are the weak operator topology closed algebras generated by the left regular representations of semigroupoids associated with finite or countable directed graphs. We expand our analysis of partly free algebras from previous work and obtain a graph-theoretic characterization of when a free semigroupoid algebra with countable graph is partly free. This analysis carries over to norm closed quiver algebras. We also discuss new examples for the countable graph case.

Ideal Structure in Free Semigroupoid Algebras from Directed Graphs

A free semigroupoid algebra is the weak operator topology closed algebra generated by the left regular representation of a directed graph. We establish lattice isomorphisms between ideals and invariant subspaces, and this leads to a complete description of the weak operator topology closed ideal structure for these algebras. We prove a distance formula to ideals, and this gives an appropriate version of the Caratheodory interpolation theorem. Our analysis rests on an investigation of predual properties, specifically the $A_n$ properties for linear functionals, together with a general Wold Decomposition for $n$-tuples of partial isometries. A number of our proofs unify proofs for subclasses appearing in the literature.

Partially Isometric Dilations of Noncommuting $N$-tuples of Operators

Given a row contraction of operators on Hilbert space and a family of projections on the space which stabilize the operators, we show there is a unique minimal joint dilation to a row contraction of partial isometries which satisfy natural relations. For a fixed row contraction the set of all dilations forms a partially ordered set with a largest and smallest element. A key technical device in our analysis is a connection with directed graphs. We use a Wold Decomposition for partial isometries to describe the models for these dilations, and discuss how the basic properties of a dilation depend on the row contraction.

Non-selfadjoint Operator Algebras generated by Weighted Shifts on Fock Space

Noncommutative multivariable versions of weighted shifts arise naturally as `weighted' left creation operators acting on Fock space. We investigate the unital weak operator topology closed algebras they generate. The unweighted case yields noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebras. The commutant can be described in terms of weighted right creation operators when the weights satisfy a condition specific to the noncommutative setting. We prove these algebras are reflexive when the eigenvalues for the adjoint algebra include an open set in complex $n$-space, and provide a new elementary proof of reflexivity for the unweighted case. We compute eigenvalues for the adjoint algebras in general, finding geometry not present in the single variable setting. Motivated by this work, we obtain general information on the spectral theory for noncommuting $n$-tuples of operators.

Factoring in Non-commutative Analytic Toeplitz Algebras

The non-commutative analytic Toeplitz algebra is the weak operator topology closed algebra generated by the left regular representation of the free semigroup on $n$ generators. The structure theory of contractions in these algebras is examined. Each is shown to have an $H^\infty$ functional calculus. The isometries defined by words are shown to factor only as the words do over the unit ball of the algebra. This turns out to be false over the full algebra. The natural identification of weakly closed left ideals with invariant subspaces of the algebra is shown to hold only for a proper subcollection of the subspaces.

The Curvature Invariant of a Non-commuting $N$-tuple

Non-commutative versions of Arveson's curvature invariant and Euler characteristic for a commuting $n$-tuple of operators are introduced. The non-commutative curvature invariant is sensitive enough to determine if an $n$-tuple is free. In general both invariants can be thought of as measuring the freeness or curvature of an $n$-tuple. The connection with dilation theory provides motivation and exhibits relationships between the invariants. A new class of examples is used to illustrate the differences encountered in the non-commutative setting and obtain information on the ranges of the invariants. The curvature invariant is also shown to be upper semi-continuous.

Quantum Channels, Wavelets, Dilations and Representations of $O_n$

We show that the representations of the Cuntz C$^\ast$-algebras $O_n$ which arise in wavelet analysis and dilation theory can be classified through a simple analysis of completely positive maps on finite-dimensional space. Based on this analysis, an application in quantum information theory is obtained; namely, a structure theorem for the fixed point set of a unital quantum channel. We also include some open problems motivated by this work.

On Bilateral Weighted Shifts in Noncommutative Multivariable Operator Theory

We present a generalization of bilateral weighted shift operators for the noncommutative multivariable setting. We discover a notion of periodicity for these shifts, which has an appealing diagramatic interpretation in terms of an infinite tree structure associated with the underlying Hilbert space. These shifts arise naturally through weighted versions of certain representations of the Cuntz C$^*$-algebras $O_n$. It is convenient, and equivalent, to consider the weak operator topology closed algebras generated by these operators when investigating their joint reducing subspace structure. We prove these algebras have non-trivial reducing subspaces exactly when the shifts are doubly-periodic; that is, the weights for the shift have periodic behaviour, and the corresponding representation of $O_n$ has a certain spatial periodicity. This generalizes Nikolskii's Theorem for the single variable case.
