The Hubble Advanced Spectral Product (HASP) Program

The Hubble Advanced Spectral Products (HASP) program is designed to robustly coadd Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) spectra within the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) in an automated fashion such that coadds are available for new data or archival data with updated calibrations. For each target within a visit or program, HASP employs a meticulous multi-stage filtering process to ensure data quality and creates coadded products for all central wavelengths (CENWAVEs) within specific gratings, as well as combined products using different gratings and instruments. The project also emphasizes making the code accessible to the user community for custom coaddition. As calibrations improve and new data are added to the archive, HASP products are re-created automatically so that they represent the best reduction of a given visit or program. Automated coadditions like those achieved by HASP can significantly enhance the combination of different CENWAVES, increase signal-to-noise ratios, and increase wavelength coverage. These properties make HASP a vital resource for astronomers using archival spectroscopic data from HST.

Evaluating Model Testing and Model Checking for Finding Requirements Violations in Simulink Models

Matlab/Simulink is a development and simulation language that is widely used by the Cyber-Physical System (CPS) industry to model dynamical systems. There are two mainstream approaches to verify CPS Simulink models: model testing that attempts to identify failures in models by executing them for a number of sampled test inputs, and model checking that attempts to exhaustively check the correctness of models against some given formal properties. In this paper, we present an industrial Simulink model benchmark, provide a categorization of different model types in the benchmark, describe the recurring logical patterns in the model requirements, and discuss the results of applying model checking and model testing approaches to identify requirements violations in the benchmarked models. Based on the results, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of model testing and model checking. Our results further suggest that model checking and model testing are complementary and by combining them, we can significantly enhance the capabilities of each of these approaches individually. We conclude by providing guidelines as to how the two approaches can be best applied together.

A Horizontal Vane Radiometer: Experiment, Theory, and Simulation

The existence of two motive forces on a Crookes radiometer has complicated the investigation of either force independently. The thermal creep shear force in particular has been subject to differing interpretations of the direction in which it acts and its order of magnitude. In this article we provide a horizontal vane radiometer design which isolates the thermal creep shear force. The horizontal vane radiometer is explored through experiment, kinetic theory, and the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The qualitative agreement between the three methods of investigation is good expect for a dependence of the force on the width of the vane even when the temperature gradient is narrower than the vane which is present in the DSMC method results but not in the theory. The experimental results qualitatively resemble the theory in this regard. The quantitative agreement between the three methods of investigation is better than an order of magnitude in the cases examined. The theory is closer to the experimental values for narrow vanes and the simulations are closer to the experimental values for the wide vanes. We find that the thermal creep force acts from the hot side to the cold side of the vane. We also find the peak in the radiometer's angular speed as a function of pressure is explained as much by the behavior of the drag force as by the behavior of the thermal creep force.
