Triple parton scatterings in proton-nucleus collisions at high energies

A generic expression to compute triple parton scattering (TPS) cross sections in high-energy proton-nucleus (pA) collisions is derived as a function of the corresponding single-parton cross sections and an effective parameter encoding the transverse parton profile of the proton. The TPS cross sections are enhanced by a factor of $9\,A\approx 2000$ in pPb compared to those in proton-nucleon collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. Estimates for triple charm ($c\overline{c}$) and bottom ($b\overline{b}$) production in pPb collisions at LHC and FCC energies are presented based on next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations for $c\overline{c}, b\overline{b}$ single-parton cross sections. At $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 8.8$ TeV, about 10% of the pPb events have three $c\overline{c}$ pairs produced in separate partonic interactions. At $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 63$ TeV, the pPb cross sections for triple-J$/ψ$ and triple-$b\overline{b}$ are ${\cal O}$(1--10 mb). In the most energetic cosmic-ray collisions observed on earth, TPS $c\overline{c}$-pair cross sections equal the total p-Air inelastic cross section.

Triple parton scatterings in high-energy proton-proton collisions

A generic expression to compute triple parton scattering (TPS) cross sections in high-energy proton-proton (pp) collisions is presented as a function of the corresponding single-parton cross sections and the transverse parton distribution in the proton encoded in an effective parameter $σ_{\rm eff,TPS}$. The value of $σ_{\rm eff,TPS}$ is closely related to the similar effective cross section that characterizes double-parton scatterings, and amounts to $σ_{\rm eff,TPS} = 12.5 \pm 4.5$ mb. Estimates for triple charm ($\rm c\overline{c}$) and bottom ($\rm b\overline{b}$) production in pp collisions at LHC and FCC energies are presented based on next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative calculations for single $\rm c\overline{c},\rm b\overline{b}$ cross sections. At $\sqrt{s}\approx$ 100 TeV, about 15% of the pp collisions produce three $\rm c\overline{c}$ pairs from three different parton-parton scatterings.

QCD and $γ\,γ$ studies at FCC-ee

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) is a post-LHC project aiming at searches for physics beyond the SM in a new 80--100~km tunnel at CERN. Running in its first phase as a very-high-luminosity electron-positron collider (FCC-ee), it will provide unique possibilities for indirect searches of new phenomena through high-precision tests of the SM. In addition, by collecting tens of ab$^{-1}$ integrated luminosity in the range of center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$~=90--350~GeV, the FCC-ee also offers unique physics opportunities for precise measurements of QCD phenomena and of photon-photon collisions through, literally, billions of hadronic final states as well as unprecedented large fluxes of quasireal $γ$'s radiated from the $\rm e^+e^-$ beams. We succinctly summarize the FCC-ee perspectives for high-precision extractions of the QCD coupling, for detailed analyses of parton radiation and fragmentation, and for SM and BSM studies through $γγ$ collisions.

$α_s$ and $\rm V_{cs}$ determination, and CKM unitarity test, from W decays at NNLO

The hadronic ($Γ^{\rm W}_{\rm had}$) and total ($Γ^{\rm W}_{\rm tot}$) widths of the W boson, computed at least at next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) accuracy, are combined to derive a new precise prediction for the hadronic W branching ratio ${\cal B}^{\rm W}_{\rm had} \equiv Γ^{\rm W}_{\rm had}/Γ^{\rm W}_{\rm tot}$ = $0.682 \pm 0.011_{\rm par}$, using the experimental Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements, or ${\cal B}^{\rm W}_{\rm had} = 0.6742 \pm 0.0002_{\rm th} \pm 0.0001_{\rm par}$ assuming CKM unitarity, with uncertainties dominated by the input parameters of the calculations. Comparing the theoretical predictions and experimental measurements for various W decay observables, the NNLO strong coupling constant at the Z pole, $α_s(m_Z) = 0.117 \pm 0.042_{\rm exp} \pm 0.004_{\rm th} \pm 0.001_{\rm par}$, as well as the charm-strange CKM element, $\rm V_{cs}$ = 0.973 $\pm$ 0.004$_{\rm exp}$ $\pm$ 0.002$_{\rm par}$, can be extracted under different assumptions. We also show that W decays provide today the most precise test of CKM unitarity for the 5 quarks lighter than $m_{\rm W}$, $\sum_{ u,c,d,s,b} |V_{ ij}|^2 = 1.999 \pm 0.008_{\rm exp} \pm 0.001_{\rm th}$. Perspectives for $α_s$ and $\rm V_{cs}$ extractions from W decays measurements at the LHC and future $e^+e^-$ colliders are presented.

Global properties of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 100 TeV

The global properties of the final states produced in hadronic interactions of protons at centre-of-mass energies of future hadron colliders (such as FCC-hh at CERN, and SppC in China), are studied. The predictions of various Monte Carlo (MC) event generators used in collider physics (PYTHIA 6, PYTHIA 8, and PHOJET) and in ultrahigh-energy cosmic-rays studies (EPOS, and QGSJET) are compared. Despite their different underlying modeling of hadronic interactions, their predictions for proton-proton (p-p) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 100 TeV are quite similar. The average of all MC predictions (except PHOJET) for the different observables are: (i) p-p inelastic cross sections $σ_{\rm inel}$ = 105 $\pm$ 2 mb; (ii) total charged multiplicity $\rm N_{_{\rm ch}}$ = 150 $\pm$ 20; (iii) charged particle pseudorapidity density at midrapidity $\rm dN_{ch}/dη|_{η=0} = 9.6 \pm 0.2$; (iv) energy density at midrapidity $\rm dE/dη|_{η=0} = 13.6 \pm 1.5$ GeV, and $\rm dE/dη|_{η=5} = 670 \pm 70$ GeV at the edge of the central region; and (v) average transverse momenta at midrapidities $\rm < p_{T}> = 0.76 \pm 0.07$ GeV/c. At midrapidity, EPOS and QGSJET-II predict larger per-event multiplicity probabilities at very low ($\rm N_{\rm ch}<3$) and very high ($\rm N_{\rm ch}>100$) particle multiplicities, whereas PYTHIA 6 and 8 feature higher yields in the intermediate region $\rm N_{\rm ch}\approx$ 30--80. These results provide useful information for the estimation of the detector occupancies and energy deposits from pileup collisions at the expected large FCC-hh/SppC luminosities.

$α_s$ review (2016)

The current world-average of the strong coupling at the Z pole mass, $α_s(m^2_{Z}) = 0.1181 \pm 0.0013$, is obtained from a comparison of perturbative QCD calculations computed, at least, at next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy, to a set of 6 groups of experimental observables: (i) lattice QCD "data", (ii) $τ$ hadronic decays, (iii) proton structure functions, (iv) event shapes and jet rates in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (v) Z boson hadronic decays, and (vi) top-quark cross sections in p-p collisions. In addition, at least 8 other $α_s$ extractions, usually with a lower level of theoretical and/or experimental precision today, have been proposed: pion, $Υ$, W hadronic decays; soft and hard fragmentation functions; jets cross sections in pp, e-p and $γ$-p collisions; and photon F$_2$ structure function in $γ\,γ$ collisions. These 14 $α_s$ determinations are reviewed, and the perspectives of reduction of their present uncertainties are discussed.

Measuring light-by-light scattering at the LHC and FCC

Elastic light-by-light scattering, $γγ\toγγ$, can be measured in electromagnetic interactions of lead (Pb) ions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC), using the large (quasi)real photon fluxes available in ultraperipheral collisions. The $γγ\toγγ$ cross sections for diphoton masses m$_{γγ}>$ 5 GeV in pp, pPb, and PbPb collisions at LHC ($\sqrt{\rm s_{_{NN}}}$ = 5.5, 8.8, 14 TeV) and FCC ($\sqrt{\rm s_{_{NN}}}$ = 39, 63, 100 TeV) center-of-mass energies are presented. The measurement has controllable backgrounds in PbPb collisions, and one expects about 70 and 2500 signal events per year at the LHC and FCC respectively, after typical detector acceptance and reconstruction efficiency selections.

Observing light-by-light scattering at the Large Hadron Collider

Elastic light-by-light scattering, $γγ\toγγ$, is open to study at the Large Hadron Collider thanks to the large quasi-real photon fluxes available in electromagnetic interactions of protons (p) and lead (Pb) ions. The $γγ\toγγ$ cross sections for diphoton masses $m_{γγ} > 5$ GeV amount to 105 fb, 260 pb, and 370 nb in p-p, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 14 TeV, 8.8 TeV, and 5.5 TeV respectively. Such a measurement has no substantial backgrounds in Pb-Pb collisions where one expects about 70 signal events per run, after typical detector acceptance and reconstruction efficiency selections.

Physics at the FCC-ee

The physics program accessible in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) is summarized. The FCC-ee aims at collecting multi-ab$^{-1}$ integrated luminosities in $e^+e^-$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 90, 160, 240, and 350 GeV, yielding 10$^{12}$ Z bosons, 10$^{8}$ W$^+$W$^-$ pairs, 10$^{6}$ Higgs bosons and $4\cdot 10^{5}$ top-quark pairs per year. Such huge data samples combined with a $\cal{O}(100 \rm keV)$ c.m. energy uncertainty will allow for Standard Model measurements with unparalleled precision and searches for new physics in regions not probed so far. The FCC-ee will be able to (i) indirectly discover new particles coupling to the Higgs and electroweak bosons up to scales $Λ\approx$ 7 and 100 TeV; (ii) perform competitive SUSY tests at the loop level in regions beyond the LHC reach; and (iii) achieve the best potential in direct collider searches for dark matter and sterile neutrinos with masses below 60 GeV.

Physics case of FCC-ee

The physics case for electron-positron beams at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) is succinctly summarized. The FCC-ee core program involves $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 90, 160, 240, and 350 GeV with multi-ab$^{-1}$ integrated luminosities, yielding about 10$^{12}$ Z bosons, 10$^{8}$ W$^+$W$^-$ pairs, 10$^{6}$ Higgs bosons and 4$\cdot$10$^{5}$ $t\bar{t}$ pairs per year. The huge luminosities combined with $\cal{100}$ keV knowledge of the c.m. energy will allow for Standard Model studies at unrivaled precision. Indirect constraints on new physics can thereby be placed up to scales $Λ_{_{\rm NP}} \approx$ 7 and 100 TeV for particles coupling respectively to the Higgs and electroweak bosons.

High-precision $α_s$ measurements from LHC to FCC-ee

This document provides a writeup of all contributions to the workshop on "High precision measurements of $α_s$: From LHC to FCC-ee" held at CERN, Oct. 12--13, 2015. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from 15 methods where high precision measurements are (or will be) available. Those include low-energy observables: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) pion decay factor, (iii) quarkonia and (iv) $τ$ decays, (v) soft parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, as well as high-energy observables: (vi) global fits of parton distribution functions, (vii) hard parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, (viii) jets in $e^\pm$p DIS and $γ$-p photoproduction, (ix) photon structure function in $γ$-$γ$, (x) event shapes and (xi) jet cross sections in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (xii) W boson and (xiii) Z boson decays, and (xiv) jets and (xv) top-quark cross sections in proton-(anti)proton collisions. The current status of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, the improvements expected from LHC data in the coming years, and future perspectives achievable in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) with $\cal{O}$(1--100 ab$^{-1}$) integrated luminosities yielding 10$^{12}$ Z bosons and jets, and 10$^{8}$ W bosons and $τ$ leptons, are thoroughly reviewed. The current uncertainty of the (preliminary) 2015 strong coupling world-average value, $α_s(m_Z)$ = 0.1177 $\pm$ 0.0013, is about 1\%. Some participants believed this may be reduced by a factor of three in the near future by including novel high-precision observables, although this opinion was not universally shared. At the FCC-ee facility, a factor of ten reduction in the $α_s$ uncertainty should be possible, mostly thanks to the huge Z and W data samples available.

Prospects for $γγ\to H$ and $γγ\to W^{+}W^{-}$ measurements at the FCC-ee

We study the possibilities for the measurement of two-photon production of the Higgs boson (in the $b \bar{b}$ decay channel), and of $W^{+}W^{-}$ pairs (decaying into four jets) in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee). The processes are simulated with the PYTHIA and MADGRAPH 5 Monte Carlo codes, using the effective photon approximation for the $e^{+}e^{-}$ photon fluxes, at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = $ 160 GeV and 240 GeV. The analyses include electron-positron tagging, realistic acceptance and reconstruction efficiencies for the final-state jets, and selection criteria to remove the backgrounds. Observation of both channels is achievable with the expected few ab$^{-1}$ integrated luminosities at FCC-ee.

$α_s$ determination at NNLO$^\star$+NNLL accuracy from the energy evolution of jet fragmentation functions at low $z$

The QCD coupling $α_s$ is extracted from the energy evolution of the first two moments (multiplicity and mean) of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions at low fractional hadron momentum $z$. Comparisons of the experimental $e^+e^-$ and deep-inelastic $e^\pm$p jet data to our NNLO$^*$+NNLL predictions, allow us to obtain $α_s(m_{_{\rm Z}})$ = 0.1205$\pm$0.0010$^{+0.0022}_{-0.0000}$, in excellent agreement with the current world average determined using other methods at the same level of accuracy.

Top-quark production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies and beyond

Single and pair top-quark production in proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future circular collider (FCC) energies, are studied with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations including nuclear parton distribution functions. At the LHC, the pair-production cross sections amount to sigma(t-tbar) = 3.4 mub in Pb-Pb at sqrt(s) = 5.5 TeV, and sigma(t-tbar) = 60 nb in p-Pb at sqrt(s) = 8.8 TeV. At the FCC energies of sqrt(s) = 39 and 63 TeV, the same cross sections are factors of 90 and 55 times larger respectively. In the leptonic final-state t-tbar --> W+b W-bbar --> b bbar l+l- nu+nu-, after typical acceptance and efficiency cuts, one expects about 90 and 300 top-quarks per nominal LHC-year and 4.7 10^4 and 10^5 per FCC-year in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions respectively. The total t-tbar cross sections, dominated by gluon fusion processes, are enhanced by 3--8% in nuclear compared to p-p collisions due to an overall net gluon antishadowing, although different regions of their differential distributions are depleted due to shadowing or EMC-effect corrections. The rapidity distributions of the decay leptons in t-tbar processes can be used to reduce the uncertainty on the Pb gluon density at high virtualities by up to 30% at the LHC (full heavy-ion programme), and by 70% per FCC-year. The cross sections for single-top production in electroweak processes are also computed, yielding about a factor of 30 smaller number of measurable top-quarks after cuts, per system and per year.

Determination of alpha_s at NLO*+NNLL from a global fit of the low-z parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions in e+e- and DIS collisions

The QCD coupling alpha_s is determined from a combined analysis of experimental e+e- and e-p jet data confronted to theoretical predictions of the energy evolution of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs) moments --multiplicity, peak, width, skewness-- at low fractional hadron momentum z. The impact of approximate next-to-leading order (NLO*) corrections plus next-to-next-to-leading log (NNLL) resummations, compared to previous LO+NLL calculations, is discussed. A global fit of the full set of existing data, amounting to 360 FF moments at collision energies sqrt(s)~1--200 GeV, results in alpha_s(m_Z^2)=0.1189^{+0.0025}_{-0.0014} at the Z mass.

Uncertainties on the determination of the strong coupling alpha_s from the energy evolution of jet fragmentation functions at low z

The QCD coupling alpha_s is determined at NLO*+NMLLA accuracy from the comparison of experimental jet data to theoretical predictions of the energy-evolution of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation function moments (multiplicity, peak, width, skewness) at low fractional hadron momentum z. From the existing e+e- and e-p jet data, we obtain alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1195 +/- 0.0021 (exp.) {+0.0015}_{-0.0} (scale) at the Z mass. The uncertainties of the extracted alpha_s value are discussed.

Pair production of quarkonia and electroweak bosons from double-parton scatterings in nuclear collisions at the LHC

Cross sections for the concurrent production of pairs of quarkonia (J/psi, Upsilon) and/or gauge bosons (W, Z) from double-parton scatterings (DPS) in high-energy proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC are calculated. The estimates are based on next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, including nuclear modifications of the parton densities, for the corresponding single-scattering cross sections. Expected event rates for J/psi+J/psi, J/psi+Upsilon, J/psi+W, J/psi+Z, Upsilon+Upsilon, Upsilon+W, Upsilon+Z, and same-sign W+W production in their (di)leptonic decay modes, after typical acceptance and efficiency losses, are given for pPb and PbPb collisions.
