Magnetic flows on 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds via the Rumin complex

We show that the appropriate notion of magnetic field on three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifolds is given by a closed Rumin differential two-form. We introduce horizontal magnetic flows starting from magnetic potential one-forms, proving that the flow depends only on the Rumin differential of the potential. Notably, in dimension three the Rumin differential acts on one-forms as a second-order differential operator. We further prove that such magnetic flows can be interpreted as a geodesic flow on a suitably lifted sub-Riemannian structure, which is of Engel type when the magnetic field is non-vanishing. In the general case, when the magnetic field may vanish, we analyze the geometry of the lifted structure, characterizing its step and abnormal trajectories in terms of the analytical properties of the magnetic field. Our work is inspired by the classical correspondence, first observed by Montgomery, between Riemannian magnetic flows and sub-Riemannian geometry.

Curvature measures and the sub-Riemannian Gauss-Bonnet theorem

We adopt a measure-theoretic perspective on the Riemannian approximation scheme proving a sub-Riemannian Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces in 3D contact manifolds. We show that the zero-order term in the limit is a singular measure supported on isolated characteristic points. In particular, this provides a unified interpretation of previous results. Moreover we give natural geometric conditions under which our result holds, namely when the surface admits characteristic points of finite order of degeneracy. This notion, which we introduce, extends the concept of mildly degenerate characteristic points for the Heisenberg group. As a byproduct, we prove that the mean curvature around an isolated characteristic point of finite order of degeneracy is locally integrable. In particular, this positively answers a question for analytic surfaces in every analytic 3D contact manifold.

Refined Strichartz Estimates for sub-Laplacians in Heisenberg and $H$-type groups

We obtain refined Strichartz estimates for the sub-Riemannian Schrödinger equation on $H$-type Carnot groups using Fourier restriction techniques. In particular, we extend the previously known Strichartz estimates previously obtained for the Heisenberg group also to non radial initial data. The same arguments permits to obtain refined Strichartz estimates for the wave equation on $H$-type groups. Our proof is based on estimates for the spectral projectors for sub-Laplacians and reinterprets Strichartz estimates as Fourier restriction theorems for nilpotent groups in the context of trace-class operator valued measures.

Unified synthetic Ricci curvature lower bounds for Riemannian and sub-Riemannian structures

Recent advances in the theory of metric measures spaces on the one hand, and of sub-Riemannian ones on the other hand, suggest the possibility of a "great unification" of Riemannian and sub-Riemannian geometries in a comprehensive framework of synthetic Ricci curvature lower bounds. With the aim of achieving such a unification program, in this paper we initiate the study of gauge metric measure spaces.

Steiner and tube formulae in 3D contact sub-Riemannian geometry

We prove a Steiner formula for regular surfaces with no characteristic points in 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds endowed with an arbitrary smooth volume. The formula we obtain, which is equivalent to a half-tube formula, is of local nature. It can thus be applied to any surface in a region not containing characteristic points. We provide a geometrical interpretation of the coefficients appearing in the expansion, and compute them on some relevant examples in three-dimensional sub-Riemannian model spaces. These results generalize those obtained in 10.1016/j.na.2015.05.006 and arXiv:1703.01592v3 for the Heisenberg group.

Intrinsic sub-Laplacian for hypersurface in a contact sub-Riemannian manifold

We construct and study the intrinsic sub-Laplacian, defined outside the set of characteristic points, for a smooth hypersurface embedded in a contact sub-Riemannian manifold. We prove that, away from characteristic points, the intrinsic sub-Laplacian arises as the limit of Laplace-Beltrami operators built by means of Riemannian approximations to the sub-Riemannian structure using the Reeb vector field. We carefully analyse three families of model cases for this setting obtained by considering canonical hypersurfaces embedded in model spaces for contact sub-Riemannian manifolds. In these model cases, we show that the intrinsic sub-Laplacian is stochastically complete and in particular, that the stochastic process induced by the intrinsic sub-Laplacian almost surely does not hit characteristic points.

Spectral summability for the quartic oscillator with applications to the Engel group

In this article, we investigate spectral properties of the sublaplacian $-Δ_{G}$ on the Engel group, which is the main example of a Carnot group of step 3. We develop a new approach to the Fourier analysis on the Engel group in terms of a frequency set. This enables us to give fine estimates on the convolution kernel satisfying $F(-Δ_{G})u=u\star k_{F}$, for suitable scalar functions $F$, and in turn to obtain proofs of classical functional embeddings, via Fourier techniques. This analysis requires a summability property on the spectrum of the quartic oscillator, which we obtain by means of semiclassical techniques and which is of independent interest.

On sub-Riemannian geodesic curvature in dimension three

We introduce a notion of geodesic curvature $k_ζ$ for a smooth horizontal curve $ζ$ in a three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold, measuring how much a horizontal curve is far from being a geodesic. We show that the geodesic curvature appears as the first corrective term in the Taylor expansion of the sub-Riemannian distance between two points on a unit speed horizontal curve $$ d_{SR}^2( ζ(t),ζ(t+ε))=ε^2-\frac{k_ζ^2(t)}{720} ε^6 +o(ε^{6}). $$ The sub-Riemannian distance is not smooth on the diagonal, hence the result contains the existence of such an asymptotics. This can be seen as a higher-order differentiability property of the sub-Riemannian distance along smooth horizontal curves. It generalizes the previously known results on the Heisenberg group.

Strichartz estimates and Fourier restriction theorems on the Heisenberg group

This paper is dedicated to the proof of Strichartz estimates on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^d$ for the linear Schrödinger and wave equations involving the sublaplacian. The Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{H}^d$ is an example of a totally non-dispersive evolution equation: for this reason the classical approach that permits to obtain Strichartz estimates from dispersive estimates is not available. Our approach, inspired by the Fourier transform restriction method initiated by Tomas and Stein, is based on Fourier restriction theorems on $\mathbb{H}^d$, using the non-commutative Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group. It enables us to obtain also an anisotropic Strichartz estimate for the wave equation, for a larger range of indices than was previously known.

On the induced geometry on surfaces in 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds

Given a surface $S$ in a 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifold $M$, we investigate the metric structure induced on $S$ by $M$, in the sense of length spaces. First, we define a coefficient $\widehat K$ at characteristic points that determines locally the characteristic foliation of $S$. Next, we identify some global conditions for the induced distance to be finite. In particular, we prove that the induced distance is finite for surfaces with the topology of a sphere embedded in a tight coorientable distribution, with isolated characteristic points.

Stochastic processes on surfaces in three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifolds

We are concerned with stochastic processes on surfaces in three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifolds. Employing the Riemannian approximations to the sub-Riemannian manifold which make use of the Reeb vector field, we obtain a second order partial differential operator on the surface arising as the limit of Laplace-Beltrami operators. The stochastic process associated with the limiting operator moves along the characteristic foliation induced on the surface by the contact distribution. We show that for this stochastic process elliptic characteristic points are inaccessible, while hyperbolic characteristic points are accessible from the separatrices. We illustrate the results with examples and we identify canonical surfaces in the Heisenberg group, and in ${\rm SU}(2)$ and ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ equipped with the standard sub-Riemannian contact structures as model cases for this setting. Our techniques further allow us to derive an expression for an intrinsic Gaussian curvature of a surface in a general three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold.

Bakry-Émery curvature and model spaces in sub-Riemannian geometry

We prove comparison theorems for the sub-Riemannian distortion coefficients appearing in interpolation inequalities. These results, which are equivalent to a sub-Laplacian comparison theorem for the sub-Riemannian distance, are obtained by introducing a suitable notion of sub-Riemannian Bakry-Émery curvature. The model spaces for comparison are variational problems coming from optimal control theory. As an application we establish the sharp measure contraction property for 3-Sasakian manifolds satisfying a suitable curvature bound.

A Bonnet-Myers type theorem for quaternionic contact structures

We prove a Bonnet-Myers type theorem for quaternionic contact manifolds of dimension bigger than 7. If the manifold is complete with respect to the natural sub-Riemannian distance and satisfies a natural Ricci-type bound expressed in terms of derivatives up to the third order of the fundamental tensors, then the manifold is compact and we give a sharp bound on its sub-Riemannian diameter.

Sub-Riemannian interpolation inequalities

We prove that ideal sub-Riemannian manifolds (i.e., admitting no non-trivial abnormal minimizers) support interpolation inequalities for optimal transport. A key role is played by sub-Riemannian Jacobi fields and distortion coefficients, whose properties are remarkably different with respect to the Riemannian case. As a byproduct, we characterize the cut locus as the set of points where the squared sub-Riemannian distance fails to be semiconvex, answering to a question raised by Figalli and Rifford in [Geom. Funct. Anal. (2010) 20: 124]. As an application, we deduce sharp and intrinsic Borell-Brascamp-Lieb and geodesic Brunn-Minkowski inequalities in the aforementioned setting. For the case of the Heisenberg group, we recover in an intrinsic way the results recently obtained by Balogh, Kristály and Sipos in [Calc. Var. PDE (2018) 57: 61], and we extend them to the class of generalized H-type Carnot groups. Our results do not require the distribution to have constant rank, yielding for the particular case of the Grushin plane a sharp measure contraction property and a sharp Brunn-Minkowski inequality.

Volume geodesic distortion and Ricci curvature for Hamiltonian dynamics

We study the variation of a smooth volume form along extremals of a variational problem with nonholonomic constraints and an action-like Lagrangian. We introduce a new invariant describing the interaction of the volume with the dynamics and we study its basic properties. We then show how this invariant, together with curvature-like invariants of the dynamics, appear in the expansion of the volume at regular points of the exponential map. This generalizes the well-known expansion of the Riemannian volume in terms of Ricci curvature to a wide class of geometric structures, including all sub-Riemannian manifolds.

Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck operators in dimension two: heat kernel and curvature

We consider the heat equation associated with a class of hypoelliptic operators of Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck type in dimension two. We explicitly compute the first meaningful coefficient of the small time asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel on the diagonal, and we interpret it in terms of curvature-like invariants of the optimal control problem associated with the diffusion. This gives a first example of geometric interpretation of the small-time heat kernel asymptotics of non-homogeneous Hörmander operators which are not associated with a sub-Riemannian structure, i.e., whose second-order part does not satisfy the Hörmander condition.
