Quantitative isoperimetric inequalities in capillarity problems and cones in strong and barycentric forms

We study quantitative isoperimetric inequalities for two different perimeter-type functionals. We first consider classical capillarity functionals, which measure the perimeter of sets in a Euclidean half-space, assigning a constant weight $\lambda \in (-1, 1)$ to the portion of the boundary that lies on the boundary of the half-space. We then consider the relative perimeter of sets contained in some suitable convex cone in the Euclidean space. In both settings, we establish sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequalities in the so-called strong form. More precisely, we show that the isoperimetric deficit of a competitor not only controls the Fraenkel asymmetry, but it also controls an oscillation asymmetry that measures how much the unit normals to the boundary of a competitor deviate from those of an isoperimetric set. Our technique is also able to explicitly identify a center that can be employed to compute the asymmetries. In particular, we also derive barycentric versions of these quantitative isoperimetric inequalities (both in the classical and in the strong form). The proofs are based on the derivation of Fuglede-type estimates for graphs defined on general spherically convex domains, in combination with a new application of the selection principle that directly provides the inequalities in barycentric form.

Particle approximation of nonlocal interaction energies

We consider Riesz-type nonlocal energies with general interaction kernels and their discretizations related to particle systems. We prove that the discretized energies $\Gamma$-converge in the weak-$*$ topology to the Riesz functional defined over the space of probability measures. We also address the minimization problem for the discretized energies, and prove the existence of minimal configurations of particles in a very general and natural setting.

Maximizers of nonlocal interactions of Wasserstein type

We characterize the maximizers of a functional that involves the minimization of the Wasserstein distance between sets of equal volume. We prove that balls are the only maximizers by combining a symmetrization-by-reflection technique with the uniqueness of optimal transport plans. Further, in one dimension, we provide a sharp quantitative refinement of this maximality result.

On the existence of minimizing sets for a weakly-repulsive non-local energy

We consider a non-local interaction energy over bounded densities of fixed mass $m$. We prove that under certain regularity assumptions on the interaction kernel these energies admit minimizers given by characteristic functions of sets when $m$ is sufficiently small (or even for every $m$, in particular cases). We show that these assumptions are satisfied by particular interaction kernels in power-law form, and give a certain characterization of minimizing sets. Finally, following a recent result of Davies, Lim and McCann, we give sufficient conditions on the interaction kernel so that the minimizer of the energy over probability measures is given by Dirac masses concentrated on the vertices of a regular $(N+1)$-gon of side length 1 in $\mathbb{R}^N$.

On the existence and boundedness of minimizing measures for a general form of non-local energies

In this paper we consider a very general form of a non-local energy in integral form, which covers most of the usual ones (for instance, the sum of a positive and a negative power). Instead of admitting only sets, or $L^\infty$ functions, as admissible objects, we define the energy for all the Radon measures. We prove the existence of optimal measures in a wide generality, and we show that in several cases the optimal measures are actually $L^\infty$ functions, providing an a priori bound on their norm. We also derive a uniqueness result for minimizers.

A note on some non-local variational problems

We study two non-local variational problems that are characterized by the presence of a Riesz-like repulsive term that competes with an attractive term. The first functional is defined on the subsets of $\mathbb{R}^N$ and has the fractional perimeter $\mathcal{P}_s$ as attractive term. The second functional instead is defined on $L^1(\mathbb{R}^N;[0,1])$ and contains an attractive term of positive-power-type. For both of the functionals we prove that balls are the unique minimizers in the appropriate volume constraint range, generalizing the results already present in the literature for more specific energies.

Minimality of balls in the small volume regime for a general Gamow type functional

We consider functionals given by the sum of the perimeter and the double integral of some kernel $g:\mathbb R^N\times\mathbb R^N\to \mathbb R^+$, multiplied by a "mass parameter" $\varepsilon$. We show that, whenever $g$ is admissible, radial and decreasing, the unique minimizer of this functional among sets of given volume is the ball as soon as $\varepsilon\ll 1$.
