From classical Lax ODEs to quantum integrable theories: the moduli

The general idea of this paper is to start from a classical integrable (partial differential) equation which arises as a compatibility condition for a matrix linear differential problem. For definitiveness' sake, a generalised sinh-Gordon equation depending on $2N-1$ complex coefficients or moduli is considered. Then, the connexion coefficients (Wronskians) of different solutions to this problem satisfy, in the spirit of the Ordinary Differential Equation/Integrable Model correspondence, functional relations, which can be considered, -- if supplemented by suitable asymptotic behaviours --, as identifying a specific state of a quantum integrable model: in fact they are the eigenvalues of extensions of Baxter operators $Q$ and $T$, the transfer matrix. Moreover, Y-system and (implementing the asymptotic conditions) thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations originate from them, without any passage through the scattering theory, and providing an invariant parametrisation of the monodromy space. The crucial novelty is the modification of all the relations because of their dependence on the moduli. For zero momentum, they fully describe physically the quantum homogeneous sine-Gordon model, {\it i.e.} scattering amplitudes of gauge fields in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM at strong coupling or their dual null polygonal light-like Wilson loops in $AdS_3$. As a direct consequence of the correspondence, two Zamolodchikov's conjectures, based on previous results, are also proven.

Integrability, susy $SU(2)$ matter gauge theories and black holes

We show that previous correspondence between some (integrable) statistical field theory quantities and periods of $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ deformed gauge theory still holds if we add $N_f=1,2$ flavours of matter. Moreover, the correspondence entails a new non-perturbative solution to the theory. Eventually, we use this solution to give exact results on quasinormal modes of black branes and holes.

On the origin of the correspondence between classical and quantum integrable theories

If we start from certain functional relations as definition of a quantum integrable theory, then we can derive from them a linear integral equation. It can be extended, by introducing dynamical variables, to become an equation with the form of Marchenko's. Then, we derive from the latter a classical (differential) Lax pair. We exemplify our method by focusing on the massive version of the ODE/IM (Ordinary Differential Equations/Integrable Models) correspondence from Quantum sine-Gordon (sG) with many moduli/masses to the classical sinh-Gordon (shG) equation, so describing, in a particular case, some super-symmetric gauge theories and the $AdS_3$ strong coupling scattering amplitudes/Wilson loops. Yet, we present it in a way which reveals its generality of application. In fact, we give some hints on how it works for spin chains.

Regular and Floquet bases for gauge and gravity theories: a non perturbative approach

The main topic of the paper is represented by the change of basis, in Heun-type equations, from the one of decaying (at two singular points) solutions to that of Floquet solutions. Crucial in the connection relations is the phase acquired by the Floquet solutions by going from a (ir)regular singularity to another. The new 'kink method' is exploited to compute the quantum momentum of the Floquet solutions as convergent series, explicitly at all orders. Hence, upon integrating it term by term, the acquired phase can be derived explicitly as a similar series. Since Heun equation and its confluences describe ${\cal N}=2$ SYM theories in the NS background as quantisation of Seiberg-Witten differentials and also appear in perturbations of gravity solutions, tests and predictions in both domains can be made. A very encouraging test is the matching of the acquired phase with the dual gauge period, $A_D$, as given by the Nekrasov instanton function. Actually, the procedure can be considered an alternative to instanton computations. On the gravity side, results for the wave functions are at leading order compatible with analogous expressions found by studying the Teukolsky (or others, like Regge-Wheeler) equation. Besides, the whole construction can represent an useful approach to these equations at all orders, shedding also light on non-perturbative contributions, which should reveal very interesting for the consequences in gravity perturbations.

From Painlevé equations to ${\cal N}=2$ susy gauge theories: prolegomena

We study the linear problems in $z,t$ (time) associated to the Painlevé III$_3$ and III$_1$ equations when the Painlevé solution $q(t)$ approaches a pole or a zero. In this limit the problem in $z$ for the Painlevé III$_3$ reduces to the modified Mathieu equation, while that for the Painlevé III$_1$ to the Doubly Confluent Heun Equation. These equations appear as Nekrasov-Shatashvili quantisations/deformations of Seiberg-Witten differentials for $SU(2)$ ${\cal N}=2$ super Yang-Mills gauge theory with number of flavours $N_f=0$ and $N_f=2$, respectively. These results allow us to conjecture that this link holds for any Painlevé equation relating each of them to a different matter theory, which is actually the same as in the well-established Painlevé gauge correspondence, but {\it with another deformation ($Ω$-background)}. An explicit expression for the dual gauge period (and then prepotential) is also found. As a by-product, a new solution to the connexion problem is illustrated.

A new method for exact results on Quasinormal Modes of Black Holes

We develop a new method for writing simple exact equations characterizing gravity solutions among which black holes and in particular the quasinormal modes. More precisely, we derive the full system of functional and Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz non linear integral equations of quantum integrability. In particular, we prove that the Quasinormal Modes verify different equivalent exact quantization conditions and identify them with Bethe roots. We numerically solve the integral equation and compare the results with other methods. Eventually, we can definitely certify its simplicity, accuracy and effectiveness. Furthermore, this method connects different unexpected fields and paves the way for innovative ways of investigations in gravity and gauge theories.

A Young diagram expansion of the hexagonal Wilson loop (amplitude) in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM

We shall interpret the null hexagonal Wilson loop (or, equivalently, six gluon scattering amplitude) in 4D ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills, or, precisely, an integral representation of its matrix part, via an ADHM-like instanton construction. In this way, we can apply localisation techniques to obtain combinatorial expressions in terms of Young diagrams. Then, we use our general formula to obtain explicit expressions in several explicit cases. In particular, we discuss those already available in the literature and find exact agreement. Moreover, we are capable to determine explicitly the denominator (poles) of the matrix part, and find some interesting recursion properties for the residues, as well.

$QQ$-system and non-linear integral equations for scattering amplitudes at strong coupling

We provide the two fundamental sets of functional relations which describe the strong coupling limit of scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM dual to Wilson loops in $AdS_3$: the basic $QQ$-system and the derived $TQ$-system. We use the $TQ$ relations and the knowledge of the main properties of the $Q$-function (eigenvalue of some $Q$-operator) to write the Bethe Ansatz equations, {\it viz.} a set of ('complex') non-linear-integral equations, whose solutions give exact values to the strong coupling amplitudes/Wilson loops. Moreover, they have some advantages with respect to the ('real') non-linear-integral equations of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and still reproduce, both analytically and numerically, the findings coming from the latter. In any case, these new functional and integral equations give a larger perspective on the topic.

$T$, $Q$ and periods in $SU(3)$ ${\cal N}=2$ SYM

We consider the third order differential equation derived from the deformed Seiberg-Witten differential for pure ${\cal N}=2$ SYM with gauge group $SU(3)$ in Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of $Ω$-background. We show that this is the same differential equation that emerges in the context of Ordinary Differential Equation/Integrable Models (ODI/IM) correspondence for $2d$ $A_2$ Toda CFT with central charge $c=98$. We derive the corresponding $QQ$ and related $TQ$ functional relations and establish the asymptotic behaviour of $Q$ and $T$ functions at small instanton parameter $q \rightarrow 0$. Moreover, numerical integration of the Floquet monodromy matrix of the differential equation leads to evaluation of the $A$-cycles $a_{1,2,3}$ at any point of the moduli space of vacua parametrised by the vector multiplet scalar VEVs $\langle \textbf{tr}\,ϕ^2\rangle$ and $\langle \textbf{tr}\,ϕ^3\rangle$ even for large values of $q$ which are well beyond the reach of instanton calculus. The numerical results at small $q$ are in excellent agreement with instanton calculation. We conjecture a very simple relation between Baxter's $T$-function and $A$-cycle periods $a_{1,2,3}$, which is an extension of Alexei Zamolodchikov's conjecture about Mathieu equation.

Integrability and cycles of deformed ${\cal N}=2$ gauge theory

To analyse pure ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit (or deformed Seiberg-Witten (SW)), we use the Ordinary Differential Equation/Integrable Model (ODE/IM) correspondence, and in particular its (broken) discrete symmetry in its extended version with {\it two} singular irregular points. Actually, this symmetry appears to be 'manifestation' of the spontaneously broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ R-symmetry of the original gauge problem and the two deformed SW cycles are simply connected to the Baxter's $T$ and $Q$ functions, respectively, of the Liouville conformal field theory at the self-dual point. The liaison is realised via a second order differential operator which is essentially the 'quantum' version of the square of the SW differential. Moreover, the constraints imposed by the broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ R-symmetry acting on the moduli space (Bilal-Ferrari equations) seem to have their quantum counterpart in the $TQ$ and the $T$ periodicity relations, and integrability yields also a useful Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) for the cycles ($Y(θ,\pm u)$ or their square roots, $Q(θ,\pm u)$). A latere, two efficient asymptotic expansion techniques are presented. Clearly, the whole construction is extendable to gauge theories with matter and/or higher rank groups.

Fermions and scalars in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Wilson loops at strong coupling and beyond

We study the strong coupling behaviour of null polygonal Wilson loops/gluon amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM, by using the OPE series and its integrability features. For the hexagon we disentangle the $SU(4)$ matrix structure of the form factors for fermions, organising them in a pattern similar to the Young diagrams used previously for the scalar sector \cite{BFPR2,BFPR3}. Then, we complete and extend the discussion of \cite{BFPR1} by showing, at strong coupling, the appearance of a new effective particle in the series: the fermion-antifermion bound state, the so-called meson. We discuss its interactions in the OPE series with itself by forming (effective) bound states and with the gluons and bound states of them. These lead the OPE series to the known $AdS_5$ minimal area result for the Wls, described in terms of a set of TBA-like equations. This approach allows us to detect all the one-loop contributions and, once the meson has formed, applies to $\mathcal{N}=2$ Nekrasov partition function via the parallel meson/instanton (in particular, they share the mechanism by which their bound states emerge and form the TBA node). Finally, to complete the strong coupling analysis, we consider the scalar sector for any polygon, confirming the emergence of a leading contribution from the non-perturbative theory on the sphere $S^5$.

$\mathcal{N} = 4$ polygonal Wilson loops: fermions

The contributions of scalars and fermions to the null polygonal bosonic Wilson loops/gluon MHV scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM are considered. We first examine the re-summation of scalars at strong coupling. Then, we disentangle the form of the fermion contribution and show its strong coupling expansion. In particular, we derive the leading order with the appearance of a fermion-anti-fermion bound state first and then effective multiple bound states thereof. This reproduces the string minimal area result and also applies to the Nekrasov instanton partition function $\mathcal{Z}$ of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories. Especially, in the latter case the method appears to be suitable for a systematic expansion.

Seiberg-Witten period relations in Omega background

Omega-deformation of the Seiberg-Witten curve is known to be written in terms of the qq-character, namely the trace of a specific operator acting in a Hilbert space spanned by certain Young diagrams. We define a differential form acting on this space and establish two discretised versions of the Seiberg-Witten expressions for the periods and related relations for the prepotential.

Quantum integrability of $\mathcal{N}=2$ 4d gauge theories

We provide a description of the quantum integrable structure behind the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA)-like equation derived by Nekrasov and Shatashvili (NS) for $\mathcal{N}=2$ 4d Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories. In this regime of the background, -- we shall show --, the instanton partition function is characterised by the solution of a TQ-equation. Exploiting a symmetry of the contour integrals expressing the partition function, we derive a 'dual' TQ-equation, sharing the same T-polynomial with the former. This fact allows us to evaluate to $1$ the quantum Wronskian of two dual solutions (for $Q$) and, then, to reproduce the NS TBA-like equation. The latter acquires interestingly the deep meaning of a known object in integrability theory, as its two second determinations give the usual non-linear integral equations (nlies) derived from the 'dual' Bethe Ansatz equations.

The full Quantum Spectral Curve for $AdS_4/CFT_3$

The spectrum of planar N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory, dual to type IIA superstring theory on $AdS_4 \times CP^3$, is accessible at finite coupling using integrability. Starting from the results of [arXiv:1403.1859], we study in depth the basic integrability structure underlying the spectral problem, the Quantum Spectral Curve. The new results presented in this paper open the way to the quantitative study of the spectrum for arbitrary operators at finite coupling. Besides, we show that the Quantum Spectral Curve is embedded into a novel kind of Q-system, which reflects the OSp(4|6) symmetry of the theory and leads to exact Bethe Ansatz equations. The discovery of this algebraic structure, more intricate than the one appearing in the $AdS_5/CFT_4$ case, could be a first step towards the extension of the method to $AdS_3/CFT_2$.

Conical Twist Fields and Null Polygonal Wilson Loops

Using an extension of the concept of twist field in QFT to space-time (external) symmetries, we study conical twist fields in two-dimensional integrable QFT. These create conical singularities of arbitrary excess angle. We show that, upon appropriate identification between the excess angle and the number of sheets, they have the same conformal dimension as branch-point twist fields commonly used to represent partition functions on Riemann surfaces, and that both fields have closely related form factors. However, we show that conical twist fields are truly different from branch-point twist fields. They generate different operator product expansions (short distance expansions) and form factor expansions (large distance expansions). In fact, we verify in free field theories, by re-summing form factors, that the conical twist fields operator product expansions are correctly reproduced. We propose that conical twist fields are the correct fields in order to understand null polygonal Wilson loops/gluon scattering amplitudes of planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

The contribution of scalars to ${\cal N}=4$ SYM amplitudes II: Young tableaux, asymptotic factorisation and strong coupling

We disentangle the contribution of scalars to the OPE series of null polygonal Wilson loops/MHV gluon scattering amplitudes in multicolour ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. In specific, we develop a systematic computation of the $SO(6)$ matrix part of the Wilson loop by means of Young tableaux (with several examples too). Then, we use a peculiar factorisation property (when a group of rapidities becomes large) to deduce an explicit polar form. Furthermore, we emphasise the advantages of expanding the logarithm of the Wilson loop in terms of 'connected functions' as we apply this procedure to find an explicit strong coupling expansion (definitively proving that the leading order can prevail on the classical $AdS_5$ string contribution).

The contribution of scalars to ${\cal N}=4$ SYM amplitudes

We analyse the contribution of $2n$ scalars to the Operator Product Expansion series for MHV gluon scattering amplitudes/polygonal Wilson loops in planar ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. Hence, we sum up on $2n$ for large coupling $λ$: the logarithm of the amplitude is proportional to $\sqrtλ$, thus competing, unexpectedly, with the famous classical contribution. We give explicit expressions for the first terms at large $λ$ in case of two and four scalars. For finalising this analysis, we find profitable an explicit computation of the $2n$-scalar term at any coupling by means of Young tableaux, paralleling, under certain aspects, the Nekrasov-Okounkov expressions for $\mathcal N =2$ SYM prepotential.
