The Darkside-20k Data Acquisition System

DarkSide-20k is a WIMP search experiment using liquid argon as a target, designed to perform a background-free search for dark matter with unprecedented sensitivity, and is currently under construction at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The detector comprises a dual-phase Time Projection Chamber complemented with external veto systems and is equipped with a total of 2720 SiPM-based readout channels. This work presents the DAQ system designed for DarkSide-20k. The system is capable of continuous, triggerless digitisation of the waveforms with high single-photoelectron detection efficiency and online processing, ensuring data reduction for long-term storage. The DarkSide-20k DAQ system employs commercial CAEN VX2745 digitisers with custom FPGA firmware implementation. Timing and synchronisation across all 48 digitisers are provided by custom Global and Crate Data Manager boards distributing a phase-aligned clock derived from a disciplined rubidium standard. Waveform segments are processed in real time by Front End Processor machines. Data are organised into collections containing whole detector information and distributed across a farm of Time Slice Processors for event reconstruction, classification, and further reduction before storage and offline analysis. A full "Quadrant" of the system, corresponding to one quarter of the final DAQ, has been assembled and validated at TRIUMF laboratory in Canada. The Quadrant has been stress-tested with simultaneous pulses and demonstrated sustained digitizer readout exceeding expected physics rates and stable long-term performance.

The $\nu$EYE Neutrino Telescope: Conceptual Design Report

The $\bf\nu EYE$ neutrino project leverages the existing large pit at Yemilab located in South Korea, to reveal the existence of sterile neutrino, the up-turn of the neutrinos from the Sun, and the first minimum of the neutrino oscillation over distances on the order of tens of kilometers for the first time. This initiative is expected to facilitate a wide range of significant scientific and technological advancements within both South Korean and international communities engaged in neutrino science and technology. The $\bf\nu EYE$ aims to investigate the largely unexplored sector of almost-massless lepton in the elementary particle physics in detail. The emphasis will be placed on the study of real time nuclear processes and reactions involving possible sterile neutrinos on timescales down to nanoseconds in ultra-high intense or radioactive neutrino beams for the first time in the world; the $\bf\nu EYE$ looks at to-be universal oscillation (``up-turn'' in the electron neutrino survival probability) of neutrinos predicted by the three neutrino oscillation paradigm. This will confirm or deny our current understanding on the particle interactions of the lepton sector; and measurement of the first oscillation minimum between the first and second neutrinos in mass.

Improved liquid argon ionization model and its impact on the DarkSide low-mass WIMP search programme

DarkSide-50 achieved leading WIMP limits down to 1.2 GeV/c2 with an ionization-only analysis, despite its small active mass of 46 kg compared to multi-ton noble-liquid detectors. Accurate modelling of the nuclear-recoil ionization yield (Qy) is central to interpreting such searches. A new global fit combining nuclear-recoil response measurements from DarkSide-50, ARIS, SCENE, and the recent ReD experiment constrains Qy between 0.4 and 150 keV within the Thomas-Imel box framework. The dependence on screening potentials is addressed through a Bayesian model comparison, which rejects the ZBL and Moli\`ere functions and strongly favours the Lenz-Jensen one. The resulting model improves DarkSide-50 sensitivity below 3 GeV/c2 and refines the DarkSide-20k sensitivity accordingly.

Initial ideal of a general rational or elliptic curve on quadrics

Over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we prove that the generic initial ideal with respect to the degree reverse lexicographic term order of a general rational or elliptic curve on quadrics is almost revlex. Following constructive arguments, our proof combines features of a pencil of quadrics, interpolation methods and the notion of double generic initial ideal.

Enhancing European Cooperation in the Search for Dark Matter

The search for dark matter is an exciting topic that is pursued in different communities over a wide range of masses and using a variety of experimental approaches. The result is a strongly correlated matrix of activities across Europe and beyond, both on the experimental and the theoretical side. We suggest to encourage and foster the collaboration of the involved institutions on technical, scientific and organisational level, in order to realise the synergies that are required to increase the impact of dark matter research and to cope with the increasing experiment sizes. The suggested network -- loosely titled "DMInfraNet" -- could be realised as a new initiative of the European strategy or be based on existing structures like iDMEu or DRD. The network can also serve as a nucleus for future joint funding proposals.

Intersection cohomology and Severi varieties of quartic surfaces

We give two explicit versions of the decomposition theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein and Deligne applied to the universal family of quartic surfaces of $\mathbb{P}^3$. The starting point of our investigation is the remark that the nodes of a quartic surface impose independent conditions to the linear system $\mid \mathcal{O}_{\mathbb P^3}(4)\mid$. Although this property is known in literature, we provide a different argument more suited to our purposes. By a result of \cite{DGF}, the independence of the nodes implies in turn that each component of Severi's variety is smooth of the expected dimension and that the dual variety is a divisor with normal crossings around Severi's variety. This allows us to study the complex $R\pi{_*}\mathbb{Q}_{\mathcal{X}}$, the derived direct image of the constant sheaf over the universal family of quartic surfaces $ \mathcal{X} \stackrel{\pi}{\longrightarrow} \mathbb P^{34}$, both in the open set parametrizing smooth and nodal quartics and in a tubular neighborhood of the variety of Kummer surfaces. We obtain in both cases an explicit decomposition and a formality result for the complex $R\pi{_*}\mathbb{Q}_{\mathcal{X}}$.

3D{\pi}: Three-Dimensional Positron Imaging, A Novel Total-Body PET Scanner Using Xenon-Doped Liquid Argon Scintillator

Objective: This paper introduces a novel PET imaging methodology called 3-dimensional positron imaging (3D{\pi}), which integrates total-body (TB) coverage, time-of-flight (TOF) technology, ultra-low dose imaging capabilities, and ultra-fast readout electronics inspired by emerging technology from the DarkSide collaboration. Approach: The study evaluates the performance of 3D{\pi} using Monte Carlo simulations based on NEMA NU 2-2018 protocols. The methodology employs a homogenous, monolithic scintillator composed of liquid argon (LAr) doped with xenon (Xe) with silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) operating at cryogenic temperatures. Main results: Significant enhancements in system performance are observed, with the 3D{\pi} system achieving a noise equivalent count rate (NECR) of 3.2 Mcps which is approximately two times higher than uEXPLORER's peak NECR (1.5 Mcps) at 17.3 (kBq/mL). Spatial resolution measurements show an average FWHM of 2.7 mm across both axial positions. The system exhibits superior sensitivity, with values reaching 373 kcps/MBq with a line source at the center of the field of view. Additionally, 3D{\pi} achieves a TOF resolution of 151 ps at 5.3 kBq/mL, highlighting its potential to produce high-quality images with reduced noise levels. Significance: The study underscores the potential of 3D{\pi} in improving PET imaging performance, offering the potential for shorter scan times and reduced radiation exposure for patients. The Xe-doped LAr offers advantages such as fast scintillation, enhanced light yield, and cost-effectiveness. Future research will focus on optimizing system geometry and further refining reconstruction algorithms to exploit the strengths of 3D{\pi} for clinical applications.

Prospects for realtime characterization of core-collapse supernova and neutrino properties

Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) offer extremely valuable insights into the dynamics of galaxies. Neutrino time profiles from CCSNe, in particular, could reveal unique details about collapsing stars and particle behavior in dense environments. However, CCSNe in our galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud are rare and only one supernova neutrino observation has been made so far. To maximize the information obtained from the next Galactic CCSN, it is essential to combine analyses from multiple neutrino experiments in real time and transmit any relevant information to electromagnetic facilities within minutes. Locating the CCSN, in particular, is challenging, requiring disentangling CCSN localization information from observational features associated with the properties of the supernova progenitor and the physics of the neutrinos. Yet, being able to estimate the progenitor distance from the neutrino signal would be of great help for the optimisation of the electromagnetic follow-up campaign that will start soon after the propagation of the neutrino alert. Existing CCSN distance measurement algorithms based on neutrino observations hence rely on the assumption that neutrino properties can be described by the Standard Model. This paper presents a swift and robust approach to extract CCSN and neutrino physics information, leveraging diverse next-generation neutrino detectors to counteract potential measurement biases from Beyond the Standard Model effects.

A footnote to a paper of Deodhar

Let $X\subseteq G\slash B$ be a Schubert variety in a flag manifold and let $\pi: \tilde X \rightarrow X$ be a Bott-Samelson resolution of $X$. In this paper we prove an effective version of the decomposition theorem for the derived pushforward $R \pi_{*} \mathbb{Q}_{\tilde{X}}$. As a by-product, we obtain recursive procedure to extract Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials from the polynomials introduced by V. Deodhar in \cite{Deo}, which does not require prior knowledge of a minimal set. We also observe that any family of equivariant resolutions of Schubert varieties allows to define a new basis in the Hecke algebra and we show a way to compute the transition matrix, from the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis to the new one.

Nilpotent cone and bivariant theory

We exhibit a new proof, relying on bivariant theory, that the nilpotent cone is rationally smooth. Our approach enables us to prove a slightly more general statement.

An effective decomposition theorem for Schubert varieties

Given a Schubert variety $\mathcal{S}$ contained in a Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}_{k}(\mathbb{C}^{l})$, we show how to obtain further information on the direct summands of the derived pushforward $R \pi_{*} \mathbb{Q}_{\tilde{\mathcal{S}}}$ given by the application of the decomposition theorem to a suitable resolution of singularities $\pi: \tilde{\mathcal{S}} \rightarrow \mathcal{S}$. As a by-product, Poincar\'e polynomial expressions are obtained along with an algorithm which computes the unknown terms in such expressions and which shows that the actual number of direct summands happens to be less than the number of supports of the decomposition.

On the pseudo-manifold of quantum states

There are various statements in the physics literature about the stratification of quantum states, for example into orbits of a unitary group, and about generalized differentiable structures on it. Our aim is to clarify and make precise some of these statements. For A an arbitrary finite-dimensional C*-algebra and U(A) the group of unitary elements of A, we observe that the partition of the state space S(A) into U(A) orbits is not a decomposition and that the decomposition into orbit types is not a stratification (its pieces are not manifolds without boundary), while there is a natural Whitney stratification into matrices of fixed rank. For the latter, when A is a full matrix algebra, we give an explicit description of the pseudo-manifold structure (the conical neighborhood around any point). We then make some comments about the infinite-dimensional case.

Bivariant class of degree one

Let $f:X\to Y$ be a projective birational morphism, between complex quasi-projective varieties. Fix a bivariant class $θ\in H^0(X\stackrel{f}\to Y)\cong Hom_{D^{b}_{c}(Y)}(Rf_*\mathbb A_X, \mathbb A_Y)$ (here $\mathbb A$ is a Noetherian commutative ring with identity, and $\mathbb A_X$ and $\mathbb A_Y$ denote the constant sheaves). Let $θ_0:H^0(X)\to H^0(Y)$ be the induced Gysin morphism. We say that {\it $θ$ has degree one} if $θ_0(1_X)= 1_Y\in H^0(Y)$. This is equivalent to say that $θ$ is a section of the pull-back $f^*: \mathbb A_Y\to Rf_*\mathbb A_X$, i.e. $θ\circ f^*={\text{id}}_{\mathbb A_Y}$, and it is also equivalent to say that $\mathbb A_Y$ is a direct summand of $Rf_*\mathbb A_X$. We investigate the consequences of the existence of a bivariant class of degree one. We prove explicit formulas relating the (co)homology of $X$ and $Y$, which extend the classic formulas of the blowing-up. These formulas are compatible with the duality morphism. Using which, we prove that the existence of a bivariant class $θ$ of degree one for a resolution of singularities, is equivalent to require that $Y$ is an $\mathbb A$-homology manifold. In this case $θ$ is unique, and the Betti numbers of the singular locus ${\text{Sing}}(Y)$ of $Y$ are related with the ones of $f^{-1}({\text{Sing}}(Y))$.

Intersection cohomology and Severi's varieties

Let $X^{2n}\subseteq \mathbb{P} ^N$ be a smooth projective variety. Consider the intersection cohomology complex of the local system $R^{2n-1}π{_*}\mathbb{Q}$, where $π$ denotes the projection from the universal hyperplane family of $X^{2n}$ to ${(\mathbb{P} ^N)}^{\vee}$. We investigate the cohomology of the intersection cohomology complex $IC(R^{2n-1}π{_*}\mathbb{Q})$ over the points of a Severi's variety, parametrizing nodal hypersurfaces, whose nodes impose independent conditions on the very ample linear system giving the embedding in $\mathbb{P} ^N$.

Polynomial identities related to Special Schubert varieties

Let $\mathcal S$ be a single condition Schubert variety with an arbitrary number of strata. Recently, an explicit description of the summands involved in the decomposition theorem applied to such a variety has been obtained in a paper of the second author. Starting from this result, we provide an explicit description of the Poincaré polynomials of the intersection cohomology of $\mathcal S$ by means of the Poincaré polynomials of its strata, obtaining interesting polynomial identities relating Poincaré polynomials of several Grassmannians, both by a local and by a global point of view. We also present a symbolic study of a particular case of these identities.

Twisted Quadrics and Algebraic Submanifolds in $\mathbb{R}^n$

We propose a general procedure to construct noncommutative deformations of an algebraic submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, specializing the procedure [G. Fiore, T. Weber, Twisted submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$, arXiv:2003.03854] valid for smooth submanifolds. We use the framework of twisted differential geometry of Aschieri et al. (Class. Quantum Grav. 23, 1883-1911, 2006), whereby the commutative pointwise product is replaced by the $\star$-product determined by a Drinfel'd twist. We actually simultaneously construct noncommutative deformations of all the algebraic submanifolds $M_c$ that are level sets of the $f^a(x)$, where $f^a(x)=0$ are the polynomial equations solved by the points of $M$, employing twists based on the Lie algebra $Ξ_t$ of vector fields that are tangent to all the $M_c$. The twisted Cartan calculus is automatically equivariant under twisted $Ξ_t$. If we endow $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a metric, then twisting and projecting to normal or tangent components commute, projecting the Levi-Civita connection to the twisted $M$ is consistent, and in particular a twisted Gauss theorem holds, provided the twist is based on Killing vector fields. Twisted algebraic quadrics can be characterized in terms of generators and $\star$-polynomial relations. We explicitly work out deformations based on abelian or Jordanian twists of all quadrics in $\mathbb{R}^3$ except ellipsoids, in particular twisted cylinders embedded in twisted Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^3$ and twisted hyperboloids embedded in twisted Minkowski $\mathbb{R}^3$ [the latter are twisted (anti-)de Sitter spaces $dS_2$, $AdS_2$].

Self-duality of the local cohomology of the Jacobian ring and Gherardelli's Theorem

We prove that the $0$-th local cohomology of the jacobian ring of a projective hypersurface with isolated singularities has a nice interpretation it in the context of linkage theory. Roughly speaking, it represents a measure of the failure of Gherardelli's theorem for the corresponding graded modules. This leads us to a different and characteristic free proof of its self-duality, which turns out to be an easy consequence of Grothendieck's local duality theorem.

On the topology of a resolution of isolated singularities, II

Let $Y$ be a complex projective variety of dimension $n$ with isolated singularities, $π:X\to Y$ a resolution of singularities, $G:=π^{-1}\left(\rm{Sing}(Y)\right)$ the exceptional locus. From the Decomposition Theorem one knows that the map $H^{k-1}(G)\to H^k(Y,Y\backslash {\rm{Sing}}(Y))$ vanishes for $k>n$. It is also known that, conversely, assuming this vanishing one can prove the Decomposition Theorem for $π$ in few pages. The purpose of the present paper is to exhibit a direct proof of the vanishing. As a consequence, it follows a complete and short proof of the Decomposition Theorem for $π$, involving only ordinary cohomology.
