On a sharper bound on the stability of non-autonomous Schrödinger equations and applications to quantum control

We study the stability of the Schrödinger equation generated by time-dependent Hamiltonians with constant form domain. That is, we bound the difference between solutions of the Schrödinger equation by the difference of their Hamiltonians. The stability theorem obtained in this article provides a sharper bound than those previously obtained in the literature. This makes it a potentially useful tool for time-dependent problems in Quantum Physics, in particular for Quantum Control. We apply this result to prove two theorems about global approximate controllability of infinite-dimensional quantum systems. These results improve and generalise existing results on infinite-dimensional quantum control.

Positive Hamiltonians cannot give exponential decay of positive observables

The survival probability of a quantum system with a finite ground energy is known to decay subexponentially at large times. Here we show that, under the same assumption, the average value of any quantum observable, whenever well-defined, cannot converge exponentially to an extremal value of the spectrum of the observable. Large-time deviations from the exponential decay are therefore a general feature of quantum systems. As a simple application of these results, we show that, when considering an open quantum system whose dynamics is generated by a Hamiltonian with a finite ground energy, a large-time exponential decay of populations is forbidden, whereas coherences may still decay exponentially.

Self-adjointness of a class of multi-spin-boson models with ultraviolet divergences

We study a class of quantum Hamiltonian models describing a family of $N$ two-level systems (spins) coupled with a structured boson field of positive mass, with a rotating-wave coupling mediated by form factors possibly exhibiting ultraviolet divergences (hence, non-normalizable). Spin-spin interactions which do not modify the total number of excitations are also included. Generalizing previous results in the single-spin case, we provide explicit expressions for the self-adjointness domain and the resolvent operator of such models, both of them carrying an intricate dependence on both the spin-field and spin-spin coupling via a family of concatenated propagators. This construction is also shown to be stable, in the norm resolvent sense, under approximations of the form factors via normalizable ones, for example an ultraviolet cutoff.

Quantum controllability on graph-like manifolds through magnetic potentials and boundary conditions

We investigate the controllability of an infinite-dimensional quantum system: a quantum particle confined on a Thick Quantum Graph, a generalisation of Quantum Graphs whose edges are allowed to be manifolds of arbitrary dimension with quasi-$δ$ boundary conditions. This is a particular class of self-adjoint boundary conditions compatible with the graph structure. We prove that global approximate controllability can be achieved using two physically distinct protocols: either using the boundary conditions as controls, or using time-dependent magnetic fields. Both cases have time-dependent domains for the Hamiltonians.

Dimensional reduction of the Dirac equation in arbitrary spatial dimensions

We investigate the general properties of the dimensional reduction of the Dirac theory, formulated in a Minkowski spacetime with an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. This is done by applying Hadamard's method of descent, which consists in conceiving low-dimensional theories as a specialization of high-dimensional ones that are uniform along the additional space coordinate. We show that the Dirac equation reduces to either a single Dirac equation or two decoupled Dirac equations, depending on whether the higher-dimensional manifold has even or odd spatial dimensions, respectively. Furthermore, we construct and discuss an explicit hierarchy of representations in which this procedure becomes manifest and can easily be iterated.

On the classicality of quantum dephasing processes

We analyze the multitime statistics associated with pure dephasing systems repeatedly probed with sharp measurements, and search for measurement protocols whose statistics satisfies the Kolmogorov consistency conditions possibly up to a finite order. We find a rich phenomenology of quantum dephasing processes which can be interpreted in classical terms. In particular, if the underlying dephasing process is Markovian, we find sufficient conditions under which classicality at every order can be found: this can be reached by choosing the dephasing and measurement basis to be fully compatible or fully incompatible, that is, mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). For non-Markovian processes, classicality can only be proven in the fully compatible case, thus revealing a key difference between Markovian and non-Markovian pure dephasing processes.

Dimensional reduction of the Dirac theory

We perform a reduction from three to two spatial dimensions of the physics of a spin-1/2 fermion coupled to the electromagnetic field, by applying Hadamard's method of descent. We consider first the free case, in which motion is determined by the Dirac equation, and then the coupling with a dynamical electromagnetic field, governed by the Dirac-Maxwell equations. We find that invariance along one spatial direction splits the free Dirac equation in two decoupled theories. On the other hand, a dimensional reduction in the presence of an electromagnetic field provides a more complicated theory in 2+1 dimensions, in which the method of descent is extended by using the covariant derivative. Equations simplify, but decoupling between different physical sectors occurs only if specific classes of solutions are considered.

Renormalization of spin$\unicode{x2013}$boson interactions mediated by singular form factors

We study and discuss the extension of the rotating-wave spin$\unicode{x2013}$boson model, together with more general models describing a system$\unicode{x2013}$field coupling with a similar rotating-wave structure, to interactions mediated by possibly singular (non-normalizable) form factors satisfying a weaker growth constraint. To this purpose, a construction of annihilation and creation operators as continuous maps on a scale of Fock spaces, together with a rigorous renormalization procedure, is employed.

On Markovianity and classicality in multilevel spin-boson models

We provide a detailed discussion about the unitary and reduced evolution induced by family of Hamiltonian models describing a multilevel system, with a ground state and a possibly multilevel excited sector, coupled to a multimode boson field via a rotating-wave interaction. We prove explicitly that the system, in the limit in which the coupling is flat with respect to the boson frequencies, is Markovian under sharp measurements in arbitrary bases; we also find necessary and sufficient conditions under which the process is classical, i.e. its family of multitime joint probability distributions satisfies the Kolmogorov consistency condition, and may thus be equivalently obtained by a classical stochastic process.

Boundary conditions for the quantum Hall effect

We formulate a self-consistent model of the integer quantum Hall effect on an infinite strip, using boundary conditions to investigate the influence of finite-size effects on the Hall conductivity. By exploiting the translation symmetry along the strip, we determine both the general spectral properties of the system for a large class of boundary conditions respecting such symmetry, and the full spectrum for (fibered) Robin boundary conditions. In particular, we find that the latter introduce a new kind of states with no classical analogues, and add a finer structure to the quantization pattern of the Hall conductivity. Moreover, our model also predicts the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect at high values of the applied electric field.

On global approximate controllability of a quantum particle in a box by moving walls

We study a system composed of a free quantum particle trapped in a box whose walls can change their position. We prove the global approximate controllability of the system. That is, any initial state can be driven arbitrarily close to any target state in the Hilbert space of the free particle with a predetermined final position of the box. To this purpose we consider weak solutions of the Schrödinger equation and use a stability theorem for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Excitation-damping quantum channels

We study a class of quantum channels describing a quantum system, split into the direct sum of an excited and a ground sector, undergoing a one-way transfer of population from the former to the latter; this construction, which provides a generalization of the amplitude-damping qubit channel, can be regarded as a way to upgrade a trace non-increasing quantum operation, defined on the excited sector, to a possibly trace preserving operation on a larger Hilbert space. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the complete positivity of such channels, and we also show that complete positivity is equivalent to simple positivity whenever the ground sector is one-dimensional. Finally, we examine the time-dependent scenario and characterize all CP-divisible channels and Markovian semigroups belonging to this class.

Quantum regression beyond the Born-Markov approximation for generalized spin-boson models

The quantum regression formula for an open quantum system consists in an infinite hierarchy of conditions for its multi-time correlation functions, thus requiring full access to the total "system+environment" evolution, and providing a stronger requirement than CP-divisibility. Here, we analyze CP-divisibility and check the validity of quantum regression beyond the Born-Markov approximation (e.g. weak coupling limit) for a class of generalized spin-boson (GSB) models giving rise to a multi-level amplitude-damping evolution; in all cases, it is possible to engineer the system-bath coupling in such a way that quantum regression is exactly satisfied.

Generalized spin-boson models with non-normalizable form factors

Generalized spin-boson (GSB) models describe the interaction between a quantum mechanical system and a structured boson environment, mediated by a family of coupling functions known as form factors. We propose an extension of the class of GSB models which can accommodate non-normalizable form factors, provided that they satisfy a weaker growth constraint, thus accounting for a rigorous description of a wider range of physical scenarios; we also show that such "singular" GSB models can be rigorously approximated by GSB models with normalizable form factors. Furthermore, we discuss in greater detail the structure of the spin-boson model with a rotating wave approximation (RWA): for this model, the result is improved via a nonperturbative approach which enables us to further extend the class of admissible form factors, as well as to compute its resolvent and characterize its self-adjointness domain.

The self-energy of Friedrichs-Lee models and its application to bound states and resonances

A system composed of two-level systems interacting with a single excitation of a one-dimensional boson field with continuous spectrum, described by a Friedrichs (or Friedrichs-Lee) model, can exhibit bound states and resonances; the latter can be characterized by computing the so-called self-energy of the model. We evaluate an analytic expression, valid for a large class of dispersion relations and coupling functions, for the self-energy of such models. Afterwards, we focus on the case of identical two-level systems, and we refine our analysis by distinguishing between dominant and suppressed contributions to the associated self-energy; we finally examine the phenomenology of bound states in the presence of a single dominant contribution.

Quantum regression in dephasing phenomena

We investigate the validity of quantum regression for a family of quantum Hamiltonians on a multipartite system leading to phase-damping reduced dynamics. After finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the CP-divisibility of the corresponding channel, we evaluate a hierarchy of equations equivalent to the validity of quantum regression under arbitrary interventions; in particular, we find necessary conditions for a nontrivial dephasing to be compatible with quantum regression. In this framework, we study a class of dephasing-type generalized spin-boson (GSB) models, investigating the existence of qubit-environment coupling functions that ensure the exact validity of quantum regression.

On the Schrödinger Equation for Time-Dependent Hamiltonians with a Constant Form Domain

We study two seminal approaches, developed by B. Simon and J. Kisyński, to the well-posedness of the Schrödinger equation with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In both cases the Hamiltonian is assumed to be semibounded from below and to have constant form domain but a possibly non-constant operator domain. The problem is addressed in the abstract setting, without assuming any specific functional expression for the Hamiltonian. The connection between the two approaches is the relation between sesquilinear forms and the bounded linear operators representing them. We provide a characterization of continuity and differentiability properties of form-valued and operator-valued functions which enables an extensive comparison between the two approaches and their technical assumptions.

Stationary excitation waves and multimerization in arrays of quantum emitters

We explore the features of an equally-spaced array of two-level quantum emitters, that can be either natural atoms (or molecules) or artificial atoms, coupled to a field with a single continuous degree of freedom (such as an electromagnetic mode propagating in a waveguide). We investigate the existence and characteristics of bound states, in which a single excitation is shared among the emitters and the field. We focus on bound states in the continuum, occurring in correspondence of excitation energies in which a single excited emitter would decay. We characterize such bound states for an arbitrary number of emitters, and obtain two main results, both ascribable to the presence of evanescent fields. First, the excitation profile of the emitter states is a sinusoidal wave. Second, we discuss the emergence of multimers, consisting in subsets of emitters separated by two lattice spacings in which the electromagnetic field is approximately vanishing.
