Amerigo Vespucci and the discovery of the Southern Sky

During the voyages that led him to discover the new continent bearing his name, Amerigo Vespucci made interesting astronomical observations of the southern sky. In the past, his data have been interpreted with criteria that do not follow Vespucci's indications, resulting in identifications that are not credible or even leading to the assertion that the data themselves are incomprehensible. However, it is possible to construct a coherent picture of all the information, arriving at an identification that is in some cases very probable, in other cases almost certain, of the stars described by Vespucci. Analysis of documents shows that he made good-quality measurements, but his incomplete knowledge of ancient texts prevented him from distinguishing the new stars from the already known ones, giving rise to a period of confusion in 16th century celestial cartography.

Un contributo al dibattito sui rapporti tra i cataloghi stellari di Tolomeo e Ipparco

The uncertainty about the relationships between the star catalogue contained in the Almagest (books VII-VIII) and the catalogue of Hipparchus dates back to the origins of modern astronomy. The fact that Hipparchus' catalogue was lost and that his observations of a limited number of stars remained has favored the formulation of various hypotheses on the subject. The recent discovery of (at least) a part of Hipparchus' catalogue seems to indicate that there are various concordances between the two catalogues, but also differences sufficient to suggest that Ptolemy's catalogue also derives from sources independent of Hipparchus' catalogue. This article presents an additional element for the comparison between the two catalogues, based on the diversity of the observation locations of the two astronomers, which provides an argument against the originality of the Ptolemaic catalogue.

A measurement of the Earth's radius for high school students

In the Tuscan Archipelago (Italy) it's possible to make an approximate measurement of the Earth's radius from the Elba Island using the Pianosa Island as a ship that appears and disappears on the horizon depending on the observer's height above sea level. The necessary calculations require the mathematical skills of the first two years of high school. The measurement described here refers to a particular geographical location, but it can probably be repeated in similar situations around the world.

Component-aware Orchestration of Cloud-based Enterprise Applications, from TOSCA to Docker and Kubernetes

Enterprise IT is currently facing the challenge of coordinating the management of complex, multi-component applications across heterogeneous cloud platforms. Containers and container orchestrators provide a valuable solution to deploy multi-component applications over cloud platforms, by coupling the lifecycle of each application component to that of its hosting container. We hereby propose a solution for going beyond such a coupling, based on the OASIS standard TOSCA and on Docker. We indeed propose a novel approach for deploying multi-component applications on top of existing container orchestrators, which allows to manage each component independently from the container used to run it. We also present prototype tools implementing our approach, and we show how we effectively exploited them to carry out a concrete case study.

Design principles, architectural smells and refactorings for microservices: A multivocal review

Potential benefits such as agile service delivery have led many companies to deliver their business capabilities through microservices. Bad smells are however always around the corner, as witnessed by the considerable body of literature discussing architectural smells that possibly violate the design principles of microservices. In this paper, we systematically review the white and grey literature on the topic, in order to identify the most recognised architectural smells for microservices and to discuss the architectural refactorings allowing to resolve them.

Between Being and Becoming: a meta-theoretical approach to irreversibility

The relationship between reversible-dynamical and irreversible-thermodynamic descriptions is analyzed from a meta-theoretical point of view. A network of inter-theoretical relations is drawn by means of asymptotic relations and complementarity. It is argued that the "paradox" between micro-reversibility and macro-irreversibility can be overcome by assuming a meta-complementarity relation existing between different levels of physical description, preserving a realist conception.
