Post-pulse dipole instability in adiabatic TDDFT: fact or artifact?

Recent real-time TDDFT calculations have reported an unexpected delayed growth of molecular dipole oscillations some time after an extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulse is applied. We show that numerical and analytical arguments suggest that this instability is an artifact of an incorrect non-linearity introduced by the computational approach: Propagation with an adiabatic exchange-correlation approximation within the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) tends to amplify initially small and pure sinusoidal oscillations in a system. On the other hand, when this same adiabatic approximation is used within the recent response-reformulated RR-TDDFT,the instability is absent. The absorbing boundary condition plays a crucial role consistent with our argument. We demonstrate this explicitly on the N2 molecule subject to an XUV pulse, with a range of adiabatic functionals.

Harnessing dressed time-dependent density functional theory for the non-perturbative regime: Electron dynamics with double excitations

Recent progress has been made in capturing spectral features of electronic states of double-excitation character in time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) through a frequency-dependent kernel. While it might appear that this development is limited to the perturbative regime, we show that when used within response-reformulated TDDFT, it accurately captures strong-field dynamics involving states of double-excitation character. More generally, this demonstrates how RR-TDDFT enables exchange-correlation functional developments in the response regime, which have so far been more successful than those in the non-linear regime, to be exploited for non-perturbative dynamics, thus significantly broadening their range of applications.

Capturing the elusive curve-crossing in low-lying states of butadiene with dressed TDDFT

A striking example of the need to accurately capture states of double-excitation character in molecules is seen in predicting photo-induced dynamics in small polyenes. Due to the coupling of electronic and nuclear motions, the dark 2$^1$Ag state, known to have double-excitation character, can be reached after an initial photo-excitation to the bright $^1$Bu state via crossings of their potential energy surfaces. However, the shapes of the surfaces are so poorly captured by most electronic structure methods, that the crossing is missed or substantially mis-located. We demonstrate that the frequency-dependent kernel of dressed TDDFT beyond Tamm-Dancoff successfully captures the curve-crossing, providing an energy surface close to the highly accurate but more expensive $δ$-CR-EOMCC(2,3) benchmark reference. This, along with its accurate prediction of the excitation character of the state makes dressed TDDFT a practical and accurate route to electronic structure quantities needed in modeling ultrafast dynamics in molecules.

Reformulation of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory for Non-Perturbative Dynamics: The Rabi Oscillation Problem Resolved

Rabi oscillations have long been thought to be out of reach in simulations using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), a prominent symptom of the failure of the adiabatic approximation for non-perturbative dynamics. We present a reformulation of TDDFT which requires response quantities only, thus enabling an adiabatic approximation to predict such dynamics accurately because the functional is evaluated on a density close to the ground-state, instead of on the fully non-perturbative density. Our reformulation applies to it any real-time dynamics, redeeming TDDFT far from equilibrium. Examples of a resonantly-driven local excitation in a model He atom, and charge-transfer in the LiCN molecule are given.

Oscillator strengths and excited-state couplings for double excitations in time-dependent density functional theory

Although useful to extract excitation energies of states of double-excitation character in time-dependent density functional theory that are missing in the adiabatic approximation, the frequency-dependent kernel derived earlier [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 120}, 5932 (2004)] was not designed to yield oscillator strengths. These are required to fully determine linear absorption spectra and they also impact excited-to-excited-state couplings that appear in dynamics simulations and other quadratic response properties. Here we derive a modified non-adiabatic kernel that yields both accurate excitation energies and oscillator strengths for these states. We demonstrate its performance on a model two-electron system, the Be atom, and on excited-state transition dipoles in the LiH molecule at stretched bond-lengths, in all cases producing significant improvements over the traditional approximations.
