Continuity of Magnitude at Finite Subsets of $\ell_1^N$

Magnitude is an isometric invariant of metric spaces introduced by Leinster in 2011. It is nowhere continuous on the Gromov--Hausdorff space of finite metric spaces, however, positive continuity results do exist if we restrict the ambient space. In this paper, we prove that magnitude is continuous at every finite subset $F$ of $\ell_1^N$. We do this by first deriving the weight measure for a finite union of cubes, i.e.\ cubical thickenings of the points in $F$, and then showing that these thickenings converge to the magnitude of the underlying finite set.

Tractable Metric Spaces and Magnitude Continuity

Magnitude is an isometric invariant of metric spaces introduced by Leinster. Since its inception, it has inspired active research into its connections with integral geometry, geometric measure theory, fractal dimensions, persistent homology, and applications in machine learning. In particular, when it comes to applications, continuity and stability of invariants play an important role. Although it has been shown that magnitude is nowhere continuous on the Gromov--Hausdorff space of finite metric spaces, positive results are possible if we restrict the ambient space. In this paper, we introduce the notion of tractable metric spaces, provide a characterization of these spaces, and establish several continuity results for magnitude in this setting. As a consequence, we offer a new proof of a known result stating that magnitude is continuous on the space of compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}$ with respect to the Hausdorff metric. Furthermore, we show that the magnitude function is Lipschitz when restricted to bounded subspaces of $\mathbb{R}$.

Synthetic Topology and Constructive Metric Spaces

The thesis presents the subject of synthetic topology, especially with relation to metric spaces. A model of synthetic topology is a categorical model in which objects possess an intrinsic topology in a suitable sense, and all morphisms are continuous with regard to it. We redefine synthetic topology in order to incorporate closed sets, and several generalizations are made. Real numbers are reconstructed (to suit the new background) as open Dedekind cuts. An extensive theory is developed when metric and intrinsic topology match. In the end the results are examined in four specific models.

Symmetric Polynomials in Upper-bound Semirings

The fundamental theorem of symmetric polynomials over rings is a classical result which states that every unital commutative ring is fully elementary, i.e. we can express symmetric polynomials with elementary ones in a unique way. The result does not extend directly to polynomials over semirings, but we do have analogous results for some special semirings, for example, the tropical, extended and supertropical semirings. These all fall into a larger class of upper-bound semirings. In this paper we extend the known results and give a complete characterization of fully elementary upper-bound semirings. We further improve this characterization statement in the case of linearly ordered upper-bound semirings.

Unified Approach to Real Numbers in Various Mathematical Settings

We provide a setting-independent definition of reals by introducing the notion of a streak. We show that various standard constructions of reals satisfy our definition. We study the structure of reals by noting that its pieces correspond to reflections on the category of streaks.

Continuity and Algebraic Structure of the Urysohn space

The Urysohn space is a complete separable metric space, universal among separable metric spaces for extending finite partial isometries into it. We present an alternative construction of the Urysohn space which enables us to show that extending isometries can be done in a canonical and continuous way, and allows us to equip the Urysohn space with algebraic structure. This is achieved in a constructive setting without assuming any choice principles.
