Continuity of Magnitude at Skew Finite Subsets of $\ell_1^N$

Magnitude is an isometric invariant of metric spaces introduced by Leinster. Although magnitude is nowhere continuous on the Gromov-Hausdorff space of finite metric spaces, continuity results are possible if we restrict the ambient space. In this paper, we focus on $\ell_1^N$ and prove that magnitude is continuous at every skew finite subset of $\ell_1^N$, that is, at every finite set whose coordinate projections are injective. For such sets, we analyze cubical thickenings and derive an explicit formula for their weight measures. This yields a formula for the magnitude of these thickenings, which we use to prove that their magnitude converges to that of the underlying finite set. Since skew finite subsets of $\ell_1^N$ form an open and dense subset of the space of all finite subsets, magnitude is continuous on an open dense subset of the space of finite subsets of $\ell_1^N$.

Finding the Homology of Manifolds using Ellipsoids

A standard problem in applied topology is how to discover topological invariants of data from a noisy point cloud that approximates it. We consider the case where a sample is drawn from a properly embedded C1-submanifold without boundary in a Euclidean space. We show that we can deformation retract the union of ellipsoids, centered at sample points and stretching in the tangent directions, to the manifold. Hence the homotopy type, and therefore also the homology type, of the manifold is the same as that of the nerve complex of the cover by ellipsoids. By thickening sample points to ellipsoids rather than balls, our results require a smaller sample density than comparable results in the literature. They also advocate using elongated shapes in the construction of barcodes in persistent homology.

Symmetric Polynomials in Tropical Algebra Semirings

The growth of tropical geometry has generated significant interest in the tropical semiring in the past decade. However, there are other semirings in tropical algebra that provide more information, such as the symmetrized (max, +), Izhakian-Rowen's extended and supertropical semirings. In this paper we identify in which of these upper-bound semirings we can express symmetric polynomials in terms of elementary ones. This allows us to determine the tropical algebra semirings where an analogue of the Fundamental Theorem of Symmetric Polynomials holds and to what extent.

The Higher-Dimensional Skeletonization Problem

Real data is often given as a point cloud, i.e. a finite set of points with pairwise distances between them. An important problem is to detect the topological shape of data --- for example, to approximate a point cloud by a low-dimensional non-linear subspace such as an embedded graph or a simplicial complex. Classical clustering methods and principal component analysis work well when given data points split into well-separated clusters or lie near linear subspaces of a Euclidean space. Methods from topological data analysis in general metric spaces detect more complicated patterns such as holes and voids that persist for a long time in a 1-parameter family of shapes associated to a cloud. These features can be visualized in the form of a 1-dimensional homologically persistent skeleton, which optimally extends a minimal spanning tree of a point cloud to a graph with cycles. We generalize this skeleton to higher dimensions and prove its optimality among all complexes that preserve topological features of data at any scale.
