Orbital-selective Dirac fermions and extremely flat bands in frustrated kagome-lattice metal CoSn

Layered kagome-lattice 3d transition metals are emerging as an exciting platform to explore the frustrated lattice geometry and quantum topology. However, the typical kagome electronic bands, characterized by sets of the Dirac-like band capped by a phase-destructive flat band, have not been clearly observed, and their orbital physics are even less well investigated. Here, we present close-to-textbook kagome bands with orbital differentiation physics in CoSn, which can be well described by a minimal tight-binding model with single-orbital hopping in Co kagome lattice. The capping flat bands with bandwidth less than 0.2 eV run through the whole Brillouin zone, especially the bandwidth of the flat band of out-of-plane orbitals is less than 0.02 eV along G-M. The energy gap induced by spin-orbit interaction at the Dirac cone of out-of-plane orbitals is much smaller than that of in-plane orbitals, suggesting orbital-selective character of the Dirac fermions.

Dirac Fermions in Antiferromagnetic FeSn Kagome Lattices with Combined Space Inversion and Time Reversal Symmetry

Symmetry principles play a critical role in formulating the fundamental laws of nature, with a large number of symmetry-protected topological states identified in recent studies of quantum materials. As compelling examples, massless Dirac fermions are jointly protected by the space inversion symmetry $P$ and time reversal symmetry $T$ supplemented by additional crystalline symmetry, while evolving into Weyl fermions when either $P$ or $T$ is broken. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we reveal that massless Dirac fermions are present in a layered FeSn crystal containing antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic Fe kagome layers, where each of the $P$ and $T$ symmetries is individually broken but the combined $PT$ symmetry is preserved. These stable Dirac fermions protected by the combined $PT$ symmetry with additional non-symmorphic $S_{\rm{2z}}$ symmetry can be transformed to either massless/massive Weyl or massive Dirac fermions by breaking the $PT$ or $S_{\rm{2z}}$ symmetry. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments indeed observed the Dirac states in the bulk and two-dimensional Weyl-like states at the surface. The present study substantially enriches our fundamental understanding of the intricate connections between symmetries and topologies of matter, especially with the spin degree of freedom playing a vital role.

A note on singular equivalences and idempotents

Let $Λ$ be an Artin algebra and let $e$ be an idempotent in $Λ$. We study certain functors which preserve the singularity categories. Suppose $\mathrm{pd}Λe_{eΛe}<\infty$ and $\mathrm{id}_Λ\tfrac{Λ/\langle e\rangle}{\mathrm{rad}Λ/\langle e\rangle} < \infty$, we show that there is a singular equivalence between $eΛe$ and $Λ$.

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator phases in the Sb doped MnBi2Te4 bulks and thin flakes

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) offer a combination of topologically nontrivial characteristics and magnetic order and show promise in terms of potentially interesting physical phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and topological axion insulating states. However, the understanding of their properties and potential applications have been limited due to a lack of suitable candidates for MTIs. Here, we grow two-dimensional single crystals of Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 bulk and exfoliate them into thin flakes in order to search for intrinsic MTIs. We perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, low-temperature transport measurements, and first-principles calculations to investigate the band structure, transport properties, and magnetism of this family of materials, as well as the evolution of their topological properties. We find that there exists an optimized MTI zone in the Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 phase diagram, which could possibly host a high-temperature QAH phase, offering a promising avenue for new device applications.

Flat band magnetism and helical magnetic order in Ni-doped SrCo$_2$As$_2$

A series of Sr(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals was synthesized allowing a comprehensive phase diagram with respect to field, temperature, and chemical substitution to be established. Our neutron diffraction experiments revealed a helimagnetic order with magnetic moments ferromagnetically (FM) aligned in the $ab$ plane and a helimagnetic wavevector of $q=(0,0,0.56)$ for $x$ = 0.1. The combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that the tuning of a flat band with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital character drives the helimagnetism and indicates the possibility of a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism.

Epitaxial growth and characterization of high quality Bi2O2Se thin films on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition

Recently, Bi2O2Se is discovered as a promising two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor for next generation electronics, due to its moderate bandgap size, high electron mobility and pronounced ambient stability. Meanwhile, it has been predicted that high quality Bi2O2Se-related heterostructures may possess exotic physical phenomena, such as piezoelectricity and topological superconductivity. Herein, we report the first successful heteroepitaxial growth of Bi2O2Se films on SrTiO3 substrates via pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Films obtained under optimal conditions show an epitaxial growth with the c axis perpendicular to the film surface and the a and b axes parallel to the substrate. The growth mode transition to three dimensional (3D) island from quasi-2D layer of the heteroepitaxial Bi2O2Se films on SrTiO3 (001) substrates is observed as prolonging deposition time of films. The maximum value of electron mobility reaches 160 cm2/V-1s-1 at room temperature in a 70nm-thick film. The thickness dependent mobility provides evidence that interface-scattering is likely to be the limiting factor for the relatively low electron mobility at low temperature, implying that the interface engineering as an effective method to tune the low temperature electron mobility. Our work suggests the epitaxial Bi2O2Se films grown by PLD are promising for both fundamental study and practical applications.

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and stripe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $\textbf{Q}_{\rm AF}$=(1,0) and $\textbf{Q}_{\rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$ are closely associated with a flat band of the $e_g$ orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the $t_{2g}$ orbitals in superconducting SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$. Therefore, Co-substitution in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ induces a $t_{2g}$ to $e_g$ orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity.

Experimental observation of bulk nodal lines and electronic surface states in ZrB$_2$

Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by the line-contact bulk band crossings and the topological surface states. Breaking certain protecting symmetry turns this system into a Dirac semimetal or Weyl semimetal that hosts zero-dimensional isolated nodal points. Recent advances in band theory predicted a topological nodal-line semimetal state possessing a new type of nodal line in AlB$_2$-type diborides. Here, we report an experimental realization of nodal-line fermions and associated surface states near the Fermi energy in ZrB$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations. The Dirac nodal lines in ZrB$_2$ wind into two groups of nodal rings, which are linked together along the $Γ$-$K$ direction. We further observe a distinct surface state connecting to each nodal line, indicative of the nontrivial topological nature of the bulk nodal lines. Therefore, our results provide convincing experimental evidence of the nodal-line semimetal states in ZrB$_2$ both in the bulk and on the surface, suggesting ZrB$_2$ as a remarkable platform for discovering unique phenomena induced by nodal-line fermions.

Experimental Observation of Dirac Nodal Links in Centrosymmetric Semimetal TiB$_2$

The topological nodal-line semimetal state, serving as a fertile ground for various topological quantum phases, where a topological insulator, Dirac semimetal, or Weyl semimetal can be realized when the certain protecting symmetry is broken, has only been experimentally studied in very few materials. In contrast to discrete nodes, nodal lines with rich topological configurations can lead to more unusual transport phenomena. Utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, here, we provide compelling evidence of nodal-line fermions in centrosymmetric semimetal TiB$_2$ with a negligible spin-orbit coupling effect. With the band crossings just below the Fermi energy, two groups of Dirac nodal rings are clearly observed without any interference from other bands, one surrounding the Brillouin zone (BZ) corner in the horizontal mirror plane $σ_h$ and the other surrounding the BZ center in the vertical mirror plane $σ_v$. The linear dispersions forming Dirac nodal rings are as wide as 2 eV. We further observe that the two groups of nodal rings link together along the $Γ$-$K$ direction, composing a nodal-link configuration. The simple electronic structure with Dirac nodal links mainly constituting the Fermi surfaces suggests TiB$_2$ as a remarkable platform for studying and applying the novel physical properties related to nodal-line fermions.

Differential projective modules over algebras with radical square zero

Let $Q$ be a finite quiver and $Λ$ be the radical square zero algebra of $Q$ over a field. We give a full and dense functor from the category of reduced differential projective modules over $Λ$ to the category of representations of the opposite of $Q$. If moreover $Q$ has oriented cycles and $Q$ is not a basic cycle, we prove that the algebra of dual numbers over $Λ$ is not virtually Gorenstein.

Large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 with magnetic Weyl fermions

The origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic materials is one of the most intriguing aspect in condensed matter physics and has been controversial for a long time. Recent studies indicate that the intrinsic AHE is closely related to the Berry curvature of occupied electronic states. In a magnetic Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, there are significant contributions on Berry curvature around Weyl nodes, which would lead to a large intrinsic AHE. Here, we report the large intrinsic AHE in the half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 single crystal. By systematically mapping out the electronic structure of Co3Sn2S2 theoretically and experimentally, the large intrinsic AHE should originate from the Weyl fermions near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization and this can be attributed to the sharp decrease of magnetization and the change of topological characteristics.

Observation of semi-localized dispersive states in the strongly correlated electron-doped ferromagnet Eu$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$O

Chemical substitution plays a key role in controlling the electronic and magnetic properties of complex materials. For instance, in EuO, carrier doping can induce a spin-polarized metallic state, colossal magnetoresistance, and significantly enhance the Curie temperature. Here, we employ a combination of molecular-beam epitaxy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and an effective model calculation to investigate and understand how semi-localized states evolve in lightly electron doped Eu$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$O above the ferromagnetic Curie temperature. Our studies reveal a characteristic length scale for the spatial extent of the donor wavefunctions which remains constant as a function of doping, consistent with recent tunneling studies of doped EuO. Our work sheds light on the nature of the semiconductor-to-metal transition in Eu$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$O and should be generally applicable for doped complex oxides.

A description of Gorenstein projective modules over the tensor products of algebras

Let $A$ be a coherent algebra and $B$ be a finite-dimensional Gorenstein algebra over a field $k$. We describe finitely presented Gorenstein projective $A\otimes_k B$-modules in terms of their underlying onesided modules. Moreover, if the global dimension of $B$ is finite, we give a more precise description of finitely presented Gorenstein projective $A\otimes_k B$-modules.

The Gorenstein-projective modules over a monomial algebra

We classify indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective modules over a monomial algebra via the notion of perfect paths. We apply this classification to a quadratic monomial algebra and describe explicitly the stable category of its Gorenstein-projective modules.

The singularity category of a Nakayama algebra

Let $A$ be a Nakayama algebra. We give a description of the singularity category of $A$ inside its stable module category. We prove that there is a duality between the singularity category of $A$ and the singularity category of its opposite algebra. As a consequence, the resolution quiver of $A$ and the resolution quiver of its opposite algebra have the same number of cycles and the same number of cyclic vertices.

Quantum many-body interactions in digital oxide superlattices

Controlling the electronic properties of interfaces has enormous scientific and technological implications and has been recently extended from semiconductors to complex oxides which host emergent ground states not present in the parent materials. These oxide interfaces present a fundamentally new opportunity where, instead of conventional bandgap engineering, the electronic and magnetic properties can be optimized by engineering quantum many-body interactions. We utilize an integrated oxide molecular-beam epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy system to synthesize and investigate the electronic structure of superlattices of the Mott insulator LaMnO3 and the band insulator SrMnO3. By digitally varying the separation between interfaces in (LaMnO3)2n/(SrMnO3)n superlattices with atomic-layer precision, we demonstrate that quantum many-body interactions are enhanced, driving the electronic states from a ferromagnetic polaronic metal to a pseudogapped insulating ground state. This work demonstrates how many-body interactions can be engineered at correlated oxide interfaces, an important prerequisite to exploiting such effects in novel electronics.

A note on resolution quivers

Recently, Ringel introduced the resolution quiver for a connected Nakayama algebra. It is known that each connected component of the resolution quiver has a unique cycle. We prove that all cycles in the resolution quiver are of the same size. We introduce the notion of weight for a cycle in the resolution quiver. It turns out that all cycles have the same weight.
