Overview of Ground-based Wide-Angle Cameras array

As one of the key ground-based facilities of the Chinese-French SVOM mission, the main scientific objectives of the Ground-based Wide Angle Camera array (GWAC) are to detect prompt optical emission of gamma-ray bursts or other short duration astronomical transients on a second-scale temporal resolution. GWAC is located at Xinglong observatory, China, and consists of 10 mounts and 40 cameras, providing a joint field of view of about 3600 square degrees. The detection ability is 16 magnitude in 10 seconds of exposure time in the visual band under the condition of the new moon phase. Here, we give an overview of GWAC and introduce the science motivation of the project, as well as the performance of the hardware and the software. The observation strategies and the data processing are briefly presented. The early sciences in the last 5 years since the first light are summarized.

From Occupations to Tasks: A New Perspective on Automatability Prediction Using BERT

As automation technologies continue to advance at an unprecedented rate, concerns about job displacement and the future of work have become increasingly prevalent. While existing research has primarily focused on the potential impact of automation at the occupation level, there has been a lack of investigation into the automatability of individual tasks. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a BERT-based classifier to predict the automatability of tasks in the forthcoming decade at a granular level leveraging the context and semantics information of tasks. We leverage three public datasets: O*NET Task Statements, ESCO Skills, and Australian Labour Market Insights Tasks, and perform expert annotation. Our BERT-based classifier, fine-tuned on our task statement data, demonstrates superior performance over traditional machine learning models, neural network architectures, and other transformer models. Our findings also indicate that approximately 25.1% of occupations within the O*NET database are at substantial risk of automation, with a diverse spectrum of automation vulnerability across sectors. This research provides a robust tool for assessing the future impact of automation on the labor market, offering valuable insights for policymakers, workers, and industry leaders in the face of rapid technological advancement.

Qibo: A Large Language Model for Traditional Chinese Medicine

Large Language Models (LLMs) has made significant progress in a number of professional fields, including medicine, law, and finance. However, in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), there are challenges such as the essential differences between theory and modern medicine, the lack of specialized corpus resources, and the fact that relying only on supervised fine-tuning may lead to overconfident predictions. To address these challenges, we propose a two-stage training approach that combines continuous pre-training and supervised fine-tuning. A notable contribution of our study is the processing of a 2GB corpus dedicated to TCM, constructing pre-training and instruction fine-tuning datasets for TCM, respectively. In addition, we have developed Qibo-Benchmark, a tool that evaluates the performance of LLM in the TCM on multiple dimensions, including subjective, objective, and three TCM NLP tasks. The medical LLM trained with our pipeline, named $\textbf{Qibo}$, exhibits significant performance boosts. Compared to the baselines, the average subjective win rate is 63%, the average objective accuracy improved by 23% to 58%, and the Rouge-L scores for the three TCM NLP tasks are 0.72, 0.61, and 0.55. Finally, we propose a pipline to apply Qibo to TCM consultation and demonstrate the model performance through the case study.

Fabrication of electronically conductive protein-heme nanowires for power harvesting

Electronically conductive protein-based materials could enable the creation of bioelectronic components and devices from sustainable and nontoxic materials, while also being well-suited to interface with biological systems, such as living cells, for biosensor applications. In addition, protein materials have other desirable properties such as inherent self-assembly and molecular recognition capabilities. However, as proteins are generally electrical insulators, the ability to render protein assemblies electronically conductive in a tailorable manner could usher in a plethora of useful materials. Here, we present an approach to fabricate electronically conductive protein nanowires by incorporating and aligning heme molecules in proximity along an ultrastable protein filament. The heme-incorporated protein nanowires demonstrated electron transfer over micrometer distances, with conductive atomic force microscopy showing individual nanowires having comparable conductance to naturally occurring bacterial nanowires. The heme-incorporated nanowires were also capable of harvesting energy from ambient humidity when deposited as multilayer films. Exposure of films to humidity produced electrical current, presumably through water molecules ionizing carboxy groups in the protein filament and creating an unbalanced total charge distribution that is enhanced by the presence of heme. A wide variety of other porphyrin molecules exist with varying electrochemical behaviors that could enable the electrical properties of protein assemblies to be tailored, paving the way to structurally- and electrically-defined protein-based bioelectronic devices.

Being Automated or Not? Risk Identification of Occupations with Graph Neural Networks

The rapid advances in automation technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, pose an increasing risk of automation for occupations, with a likely significant impact on the labour market. Recent social-economic studies suggest that nearly 50\% of occupations are at high risk of being automated in the next decade. However, the lack of granular data and empirically informed models have limited the accuracy of these studies and made it challenging to predict which jobs will be automated. In this paper, we study the automation risk of occupations by performing a classification task between automated and non-automated occupations. The available information is 910 occupations' task statements, skills and interactions categorised by Standard Occupational Classification (SOC). To fully utilize this information, we propose a graph-based semi-supervised classification method named \textbf{A}utomated \textbf{O}ccupation \textbf{C}lassification based on \textbf{G}raph \textbf{C}onvolutional \textbf{N}etworks (\textbf{AOC-GCN}) to identify the automated risk for occupations. This model integrates a heterogeneous graph to capture occupations' local and global contexts. The results show that our proposed method outperforms the baseline models by considering the information of both internal features of occupations and their external interactions. This study could help policymakers identify potential automated occupations and support individuals' decision-making before entering the job market.

Local Active Galactic Nuclei with Large Broad-H{\alpha} Variability Reside in Red Galaxies

Inspired by our serendipitous discovery of six AGNs with varying broad-Halpha fluxes over years out of our searching for intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), we conduct a systematic investigation of changing-look (CL) and large-variability AGNs. We collect all the CL AGNs at z<0.15 and the reverberation mapped AGNs with strongly variable broad Halpha, and perform careful decomposition fittings to both their images and spectra. We find two observational facts: (1) The host galaxies of local CL and large-variability AGNs, mainly being Seyferts, are in the red (gas-poor) tail of the general Seyfert galaxy population. (2) In contrast, there is a significant trend that their more luminous counterparts namely CL and extremely variable quasars (CLQs and EVQs) are different: CLQs are generally in blue galaxies; in terms of the diagram of SFR and M* local CL Seyfert galaxies are located in the green valley, whereas CLQ hosts are in the star-forming main sequence. We propose explanations for those strongly variable Seyferts and quasars, respectively, under the thought that accretion disks broadly depend on nuclear fueling modes. Local large-variability and CL Seyferts are in nuclear famine mode, where cold-gas clumps can be formed stochastically in the fueling flow, and their episodic infall produces sharp peaks in the accretion-rate curve. CLQs and EVQs are in feast fueling mode, which may account for both their preference to blue galaxies and their variability pattern (high-amplitude tail of the continuous distribution). Lastly, we propose a new thinking: to search for IMBHs by optical variability in red galaxies.

Challenge report:VIPriors Action Recognition Challenge

This paper is a brief report to our submission to the VIPriors Action Recognition Challenge. Action recognition has attracted many researchers attention for its full application, but it is still challenging. In this paper, we study previous methods and propose our method. In our method, we are primarily making improvements on the SlowFast Network and fusing with TSM to make further breakthroughs. Also, we use a fast but effective way to extract motion features from videos by using residual frames as input. Better motion features can be extracted using residual frames with SlowFast, and the residual-frame-input path is an excellent supplement for existing RGB-frame-input models. And better performance obtained by combining 3D convolution(SlowFast) with 2D convolution(TSM). The above experiments were all trained from scratch on UCF101.

A Deeply Buried Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Nucleus Uncovered in Scattered Light

We present spectropolarimetric and spectrophotometric observations of the peculiar active galactic nucleus (AGN) SDSS J120300.19+162443.7 (hereafter J1203+1624) at $z=0.1656$. Its optical total flux spectra clearly show broad emission lines (BELs) in H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$. After removal of narrow emission lines (NELs), the full width at half maximum of the lorentzian BEL is $FWHM_{\rm BEL} \approx 1,270$ km s$^{-1}$, fulfilling the conventional definition of a narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy. However, its NELs are unprecedentedly strong when compared to type 1AGNs. This, together with its large MIR excess ($g-W_4 = 13.172$ mag), implies that the observer and the narrow emission line region (NELR) might see a different ionization continuum. Our optical spectropolarimetry confirms its type 2 nature by detecting a polarized blue continuum and Balmer BELs ($FWHM_{\rm Polarized~BEL} \approx 1,183$ km s$^{-1}$), with a high polarization degree of $> 20$% in the blue wing. The mass and Eddington rate of the central black hole is estimated based on both transmitted and scattered AGN radiation, which is $M_{\bullet} < 2.9 \times 10^7 M_\odot$ and $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} > 1.5$. Severe extinction of the AGN emission also enables a clear view of the compact host galaxy. Discovery of J1203+1624 suggests that NLS1 follows AGN unfication scheme, studying of its analogs could blaze a new trail for exploring the connection between black hole growth and star formation in the host galaxy. Interesting features of J1203+1624 like the peculiar NELs, inflowing scattering clouds within sublimation radius are worth detailed follow-ups in the future.

The Xinglong 2.16-m Telescope: Current Instruments and Scientific Projects

The Xinglong 2.16-m reflector is the first 2-meter class astronomical telescope in China. It was jointly designed and built by the Nanjing Astronomical Instruments Factory (NAIF), Beijing Astronomical Observatory (now National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, NAOC) and Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. It is Ritchey-Chr\'{e}tien (R-C) reflector on an English equatorial mount and the effective aperture is 2.16 meters. It had been the largest optical telescope in China for $\sim18$ years until the Guoshoujing Telescope (also called Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, LAMOST) and the Lijiang 2.4-m telescope were built. At present, there are three main instruments on the Cassegrain focus available: the Beijing Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (BFOSC) for direct imaging and low resolution ($R\sim500-2000$) spectroscopy, the spectrograph made by Optomechanics Research Inc. (OMR) for low resolution spectroscopy (the spectral resolutions are similar to those of BFOSC) and the fiber-fed High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS, $R\sim30000-65000$). The telescope is widely open to astronomers all over China as well as international astronomical observers. Each year there are more than 40 ongoing observing projects, including 6-8 key projects. Recently, some new techniques and instruments (e.g., astro-frequency comb calibration system, polarimeter and adaptive optics) have been or will be tested on the telescope to extend its observing abilities.

Correlation Analysis of a Large Sample of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies: Linking Central Engine and Host Properties

We present a statistical study of a large, homogeneously analyzed sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, accompanied by a comparison sample of broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies. Optical emission-line and continuum properties are subjected to correlation analyses, in order to identify the main drivers of active galactic nuclei (AGN) correlation space, and of NLS1 galaxies in particular. For the first time, we have established the density of the narrow-line region as a key parameter in Eigenvector 1 space, as important as the Eddington ratio L/Ledd. This is important because it links the properties of the central engine with the properties of the host galaxy; i.e., the interstellar medium (ISM). We also confirm previously found correlations involving the line width of Hbeta, and the strength of the FeII and [OIII]5007 emission lines, and we confirm the important role played by L/Ledd in driving the properties of NLS1 galaxies. A spatial correlation analysis shows that large-scale environments of the BLS1 and NLS1 galaxies of our sample are similar. If mergers are rare in our sample, accretion-driven winds on the one hand, or bar-driven inflows on the other hand, may account for the strong dependence of Eigenvector 1 on ISM density.

Transient Super-strong Coronal Lines and Broad Bumps in the Galaxy SDSS J074820.67+471214.3

Variable super-strong coronal emission lines were observed in one galaxy, SDSS J095209.56+214313.3, and their origin remains controversy. In this paper, we report the detection of variable broad spectral bumps, reminiscent of supernova (SN) II-Plateau (II-P) spectra taken a few days after the shock breakout, in the second galaxy with variable super-strong coronal lines, SDSS J074820.67+471214.3. The coronal line spectrum shows unprecedented high ionization with strong [Fe X], [Fe XI], [Fe XIV], [S XII] and [Ar XIV], but without detectable optical [Fe VII] lines. The coronal line luminosities are similar to that observed in bright Seyfert galaxies, and 20 times more luminous than that reported in the hottest Type IIn SN 2005ip. The coronal lines ($σ~120-240$ km s-1) are much broader than the narrow lines ($σ\sim 40$ km/s) from the star forming regions in the galaxy, but at nearly the same systematic redshift. We also detected a variable non-stellar continuum in optical and UV. In the follow-up spectra taken 4-5 years later, the coronal lines, SN-like feature, and non-stellar continuum disappeared, while the [O III] intensity increased by about a factor of ten. Our analysis suggests that the coronal line region should be at least ten light days in size, and be powered either by a quasi-steady ionizing source with a soft X-ray luminosity at least a few 10^{42} erg s-1 or by a very luminous soft X-ray outburst. These findings can be more naturally explained by a star tidally disrupted by the central black hole than by an SN explosion.

The Narrow-Line Region of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

We have studied the physical properties of a sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, and present a summary of our previous results, and new results. In particular, we have previously shown that (1) the locus of NLS1 galaxies on the M_BH-sigma_[OIII] plane does follow the relation of non-active galaxies after removing objects obviously dominated by outflows as evidenced by their [OIII] core blueshifts. We have (2) identified a number of so-called 'blue outliers' with large outflow velocities revealed by their emission-line kinematic shifts. We also (3) present new correlations and trends which link black hole mass, Eddington ratio and physical parameters of the emission-line regions.

Narrow double-peaked emission lines of SDSS J131642.90+175332.5: signature of a single or a binary AGN in a merger, jet-cloud interaction, or unusual narrow-line region geometry

We present an analysis of the active galaxy SDSS J131642.90+175332.5, which is remarkable because all of its narrow emission lines are double-peaked, and because it additionally shows an extra broad component (FHWM ~ 1400 km/s) in most of its forbidden lines, peaking in between the two narrow systems. The peaks of the two narrow systems are separated by 400--500 km/s in velocity space. The spectral characteristics of double-peaked [O III] emission have previously been interpreted as a signature of dual or binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs), among other models. In the context of the binary scenario, SDSS J131642.90+175332.5 is a particularly good candidate because not just one line but all of its emission lines are double-peaked. However, we also discuss a number of other scenarios which can potentially account for double-peaked narrow emission lines, including projection effects, a two-sided outflow, jet-cloud interactions, special narrow-line region (NLR) geometries (disks, bars, or inner spirals), and a galaxy merger with only one AGN illuminating two NLRs. We argue that the similarity of the emission-line ratios in both systems, and the presence of the very unusual broad component at intermediate velocity, makes a close pair of unrelated AGNs unlikely, and rather argues for processes in a single galaxy or merger. We describe future observations which can distinguish between these remaining possibilities.

XMM-Newton observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 in an historical low X-ray flux state

We report the discovery of strong soft X-ray emission lines and a hard continuum above 2 keV in the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 during an extremely low X-ray flux state. Mrk 335 was observed for 22 ks by XMM-Newton in July 2007 as a Target of Opportunity to examine it in its X-ray low-flux state, which was discovered with Swift. Long-term light curves suggest that this is the lowest flux state this AGN has ever been seen in. However, Mrk 335 is still sufficiently bright that its X-ray properties can be studied in detail. The X-ray continuum spectrum is very complex and requires several components to model. Statistically, partial covering and blurred reflection models work well. We confirm the presence of a strong narrow Fe line at 6.4 keV. High-resolution spectroscopy with the XMM-RGS reveals strong, soft X-ray emission lines not detected in previous, higher signal-to-noise, XMM-Newton observations, such as: highly ionized Fe lines, O VII, Ne IX and Mg XI lines. The optical/UV fluxes are similar to those previously measured with Swift. Optical spectroscopy taken in 2007 September do not show any changes to optical spectra obtained 8 years earlier.

The narrow-line region of narrow-line and broad-line type 1 AGN I. A zone of avoidance in density

The properties of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, the links and correlations between them, and the physics behind them, are still not well understood. Apart from accretion rates and black hole masses, density and outflows were speculated to be among the main drivers of the NLS1 phenomenon. Here, we utilize the diagnostic power of the [SII]6716,6731 intensity ratio to measure the density of the NLR systematically and homogeneously for a large sample of NLS1 galaxies, and we perform a comparison with a sample of broad-line type 1 AGN. We report the discovery of a zone of avoidance in density in the sense that AGN with broad lines (FWHM_Hbeta > 2000 km/s) avoid low densities, while NLS1 galaxies show a wider distribution in the NLR density, including a significant number of objects with low densities. A correlation analysis further shows that the Eddington ratio L/L_Edd anti-correlates with density. We investigate a number of different models for the zone of avoidance in density. Supersolar metallicities and temperature effects, a strong starburst contribution in NLS1 galaxies, different NLR extents and selective obscuration are considered unlikely. Possible differences in the fraction of matter-bounded clouds and differences in the interstellar media of the host galaxies of NLS1 galaxies and broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies can only be tested further with future observations. We tentatively favor the effects of winds/outflows, stronger in NLS1 galaxies than in BLS1 galaxies, to explain the observations.

A narrow line Seyfert 1--blazar composite nucleus in 2MASX J0324+3410

We report the identification of 2MASX J032441.19+341045.9 (hereafter 2MASX J0324+3410) with an appealing object which shows the dual properties of both a narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) and a blazar. Its optical spectrum, which has a Hβline width about 1600 km s^-1 (FWHM), an [OIII] to Hβline ratio ~0.12, and strong FeII emission, clearly fulfills the conventional definition of NLS1s. On the other hand, 2MASX J0324+3410 also exhibits some behavior which is characteristic of blazars, including a flat radio spectrum above 1 GHz, a compact core plus a one-sided jet structure on mas-scale at 8.4 GHz, highly variable fluxes in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands, and a possible detection of TeV gamma-ray emission. On its optical image, obtained with the HST WFPC2, the active nucleus is displaced from the center of the host galaxy, which exhibits an apparent one-armed spiral structure extended to 16 kpc. The remarkable hybrid behavior of this object presents a challenge to current models of NLS1 galaxies and $γ$-ray blazars.
