Generality of Lieb's Concavity Theorem

We show that Lieb's concavity theorem holds more generally for any unitarily invariant matrix function $ϕ:\mathbf{H}^n_+\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ that is monotone and concave. Concretely, we prove the joint concavity of the function $(A,B) \mapstoϕ\big[(B^\frac{qs}{2}K^*A^{ps}KB^\frac{qs}{2})^{\frac{1}{s}}\big] $ on $\mathbf{H}_+^m\times\mathbf{H}_+^n$, for any $K\in \mathbb{C}^{m\times n},s\in(0,1],p,q\in[0,1], p+q\leq 1$.

Improvement on a Generalized Lieb's Concavity Theorem

We show that Lieb's concavity theorem holds more generally for any unitary invariant matrix function $ϕ:\mathbf{H}_+^n\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_+^n$ that is concave and satisfies Hölder's inequality. Concretely, we prove the joint concavity of the function $(A,B) \mapstoϕ\big[(B^\frac{qs}{2}K^*A^{ps}KB^\frac{qs}{2})^{\frac{1}{s}}\big] $ on $\mathbf{H}_+^n\times\mathbf{H}_+^m$, for any $K\in \mathbb{C}^{n\times m}$ and any $s,p,q\in(0,1], p+q\leq 1$. This result improves a recent work by Huang for a more specific class of $ϕ$.

A generalized Lieb's theorem and its applications to spectrum estimates for a sum of random matrices

In this paper we prove the concavity of the $k$-trace functions, $A\mapsto (\text{Tr}_k[\exp(H+\ln A)])^{1/k}$, on the convex cone of all positive definite matrices. $\text{Tr}_k[A]$ denotes the $k_{\mathrm{th}}$ elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of $A$. As an application, we use the concavity of these $k$-trace functions to derive tail bounds and expectation estimates on the sum of the $k$ largest (or smallest) eigenvalues of a sum of random matrices.

A Fast Hierarchically Preconditioned Eigensolver Based On Multiresolution Matrix Decomposition

In this paper we propose a new iterative method to hierarchically compute a relatively large number of leftmost eigenpairs of a sparse symmetric positive matrix under the multiresolution operator compression framework. We exploit the well-conditioned property of every decomposition components by integrating the multiresolution framework into the Implicitly restarted Lanczos method. We achieve this combination by proposing an extension-refinement iterative scheme, in which the intrinsic idea is to decompose the target spectrum into several segments such that the corresponding eigenproblem in each segment is well-conditioned. Theoretical analysis and numerical illustration are also reported to illustrate the efficiency and effectiveness of this algorithm.
