Singularities of Dirac-Coulomb propagators

In this paper we study singularities of propagators and $N$-point functions for Dirac fields in a Coulomb potential, possibly with a $t$-dependent smooth part for $|t|<T<\infty$. We show that the in and out Dirac-Coulomb vacua are Hadamard states for $r\neq 0$. Furthermore, we prove that the relative charge density of any two Hadamard states is well-defined as a locally integrable function including near $r=0$. The results are based on a diffractive propagation of singularities theorem for the Dirac-Coulomb system previously obtained by the first and third authors, generalized here to the case of $t$-dependent potentials.

The Klein-Gordon equation on asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes: the Feynman propagator

We develop a theory of Feynman propagators for the massive Klein--Gordon equation with asymptotically static perturbations. Building on our previous work on the causal propagators, we employ a framework based on propagation of singularities estimates in Vasy's 3sc-calculus. We combine these estimates to prove global spacetime mapping properties for the Feynman propagator, and to show that it satisfies a microlocal Hadamard condition. We show that the Feynman propagator can be realized as the inverse of a mapping between appropriate $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces with additional regularity near the asymptotic sources of the Hamiltonian flow, realized as a family of radial points on a compactified spacetime.

The Klein-Gordon equation on asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes: causal propagators

We construct the causal (forward/backward) propagators for the massive Klein-Gordon equation perturbed by a first order operator which decays in space but not necessarily in time. In particular, we obtain global estimates for forward/backward solutions to the inhomogeneous, perturbed Klein-Gordon equation, including in the presence of bound states of the limiting spatial Hamiltonians. To this end, we prove propagation of singularities estimates in all regions of infinity (spatial, null, and causal) and use the estimates to prove that the Klein-Gordon operator is an invertible mapping between adapted weighted Sobolev spaces. This builds off work of Vasy in which inverses of hyperbolic PDEs are obtained via construction of a Fredholm mapping problem using radial points propagation estimates. To deal with the presence of a perturbation which persists in time, we employ a class of pseudodifferential operators first explored in Vasy's many-body work.

Price's law on Minkowski space in the presence of an inverse square potential

We consider the pointwise decay of solutions to wave-type equations in two model singular settings. Our main result is a form of Price's law for solutions of the massless Dirac-Coulomb system in (3+1)-dimensions. Using identical techniques, we prove a similar theorem for the wave equation on Minkowski space with an inverse square potential. One novel feature of these singular models is that solutions exhibit two different leading decay rates at timelike infinity in two regimes, distinguished by whether the spatial momentum along a curve which approaches timelike infinity is zero or non-zero. An important feature of our analysis is that it yields a precise description of solutions at the interface of these two regions which comprise the whole of timelike infinity.

Asymptotics of the radiation field for the massless Dirac-Coulomb system

We consider the long-time behavior of the massless Dirac equation coupled to a Coulomb potential. For nice enough initial data, we find a joint asymptotic expansion for solutions near the null and future infinities and characterize explicitly the decay rates seen in the expansion. This paper can be viewed as a successor to previous work on asymptotic expansions for the radiation field. The key new elements are propagation estimates near the singularity of the potential, building on work of the first author with Wunsch and an explicit calculation with hypergeometric functions to determine the rates of decay.

Diffraction for the Dirac-Coulomb propagator

The Dirac equation in $\mathbb{R}^{1,3}$ with potential Z/r is a relativistic field equation modeling the hydrogen atom. We analyze the singularity structure of the propagator for this equation, showing that the singularities of the Schwartz kernel of the propagator are along an expanding spherical wave away from rays that miss the potential singularity at the origin, but also may include an additional spherical wave of diffracted singularities emanating from the origin. This diffracted wavefront is 1-0 derivatives smoother than the main singularities and is a conormal singularity.

Riemann moduli spaces are quantum ergodic

In this note we show that the Riemann moduli spaces $M_{g, n}$ equipped with the Weil--Petersson metric are quantum ergodic for $3g+n \geq 4$. We also provide other examples of singular spaces with ergodic geodesic flow for which quantum ergodicity holds.

The radiation field on product cones

We consider the wave equation on a product cone and find a joint asymptotic expansion for solutions near null and future infinities. The rates of decay seen in the expansion at future infinity are the resonances of a hyperbolic cone and were computed by the authors in a previous paper. The expansion treats an asymptotic regime not considered in the influential work of Cheeger and Taylor. The main result adapts the blueprint laid out in the asymptotically Minkowski setting with key new elements including propagation estimates near the conic singularities. The proof of the propagation estimates extends prior work of Melrose-Vasy-Wunsch and Gannot-Wunsch.

Scattering resonances on truncated cones

We consider the problem of finding the resonances of the Laplacian on truncated Riemannian cones. In a similar fashion to Cheeger--Taylor, we construct the resolvent and scattering matrix for the Laplacian on cones and truncated cones. Following Stefanov, we show that the resonances on the truncated cone are distributed asymptotically as Ar^n + o(r^n), where A is an explicit coefficient. We also conclude that the Laplacian on a non-truncated cone has no resonances away from zero.

Locating resonances on hyperbolic cones

In this note we explicitly compute the resonances on hyperbolic cones. These are hyperbolic manifolds with a conic singularity equipped with a warped product metric. The calculation is based on separation of variables and Kummer's connection formulae for hypergeometric functions. To our knowledge this is the one of the few explicit calculations of resonances that does not rely on the resolvent being a two-point function.

An explicit description of the radiation field in 3+1-dimensions

In previous work with A. Vasy and J. Wunsch, the author established an asymptotic expansion for the radiation field on asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes and showed that the exponents seen in the expansion are given by the poles of a meromorphic family of operators on the spacetime's "boundary at infinity". This note provides an explicit accounting of these poles when the spacetime is 3+1-dimensional Minkowski space. We conclude by stating the "resonant states" for the first few resonances and then posing a combinatorial problem.

Asymptotics of scalar waves on long-range asymptotically Minkowski spaces

We show the existence of the full compound asymptotics of solutions to the scalar wave equation on long-range non-trapping Lorentzian manifolds modeled on the radial compactification of Minkowski space. In particular, we show that there is a joint asymptotic expansion at null and timelike infinity for forward solutions of the inhomogeneous equation. In two appendices we show how these results apply to certain spacetimes whose null infinity is modeled on that of the Kerr family. In these cases the leading order logarithmic term in our asymptotic expansions at null infinity is shown to be nonzero.

Sharp high-frequency estimates for the Helmholtz equation and applications to boundary integral equations

We consider three problems for the Helmholtz equation in interior and exterior domains in R^d (d=2,3): the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann and Neumann-to-Dirichlet problems for outgoing solutions, and the interior impedance problem. We derive sharp estimates for solutions to these problems that, in combination, give bounds on the inverses of the combined-field boundary integral operators for exterior Helmholtz problems.

Asymptotics of radiation fields in asymptotically Minkowski space

We consider a non-trapping $n$-dimensional Lorentzian manifold endowed with an end structure modeled on the radial compactification of Minkowski space. We find a full asymptotic expansion for tempered forward solutions of the wave equation in all asymptotic regimes. The rates of decay seen in the asymptotic expansion are related to the resonances of a natural asymptotically hyperbolic problem on the "northern cap" of the compactification. For small perturbations of Minkowski space that fit into our framework, we show a rate of decay that improves on the Klainerman--Sobolev estimates.

Radiation fields on Schwarzschild spacetime

In this paper we define the radiation field for the wave equation on the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. In this context it has two components: the rescaled restriction of the time derivative of a solution to null infinity and to the event horizon. In the process, we establish some regularity properties of solutions of the wave equation on the spacetime. In particular, we prove that the regularity of the solution across the event horizon and across null infinity is determined by the regularity and decay rate of the initial data at the event horizon and at infinity. We also show that the radiation field is unitary with respect to the conserved energy and prove support theorems for each piece of the radiation field.

Strichartz estimates on exterior polygonal domains

Using a new local smoothing estimate of the first and third authors, we prove local-in-time Strichartz and smoothing estimates without a loss exterior to a large class of polygonal obstacles with arbitrary boundary conditions and global-in-time Strichartz estimates without a loss exterior to a large class of polygonal obstacles with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In addition, we prove a global-in-time local smoothing estimate in exterior wedge domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions and discuss some nonlinear applications.

Equipartition of energy in geometric scattering theory

In this note, we use an elementary argument to show that the existence and unitarity of radiation fields implies asymptotic partition of energy for the corresponding wave equation. This argument establishes the equipartition of energy for the wave equation on scattering manifolds, asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, asymptotically complex hyperbolic manifolds, and the Schwarzschild spacetime. It also establishes equipartition of energy for the energy-critical semilinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{3}$.
