Bulk viscosity in kaon condensed matter

We investigate the effect of $K^-$ condensed matter on bulk viscosity and r-mode instability in neutron stars. The bulk viscosity coefficient due to the non-leptonic process $n \rightleftharpoons p + K^-$ is studied here. In this connection, equations of state are constructed within the framework of relativistic field theoretical models where nucleon-nucleon and kaon-nucleon interactions are mediated by the exchange of scalar and vector mesons. We find that the bulk viscosity coefficient due to the non-leptonic weak process in the condensate is suppressed by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, kaon bulk viscosity may not damp the r-mode instability in neutron stars.

Exotic bulk viscosity and its influence on neutron star r-modes

We investigate the effect of exotic matter in particular, hyperon matter on neutron star properties such as equation of state (EoS), mass-radius relationship and bulk viscosity. Here we construct equations of state within the framework of a relativistic field theoretical model. As hyperons are produced abundantly in dense matter, hyperon-hyperon interaction becomes important and is included in this model. Hyperon-hyperon interaction gives rise to a softer EoS which results in a smaller maximum mass neutron star compared with the case without the interaction. Next we compute the coefficient of bulk viscosity and the corresponding damping time scale due to the non-leptonic weak process including $Λ$ hyperons. Further, we investigate the role of the bulk viscosity on gravitational radiation driven r-mode instability in a neutron star of given mass and temperature and find that the instability is effectively suppressed.

Effect of hyperon-hyperon interaction on bulk viscosity and r-mode instability in neutron stars

We investigate the effect of hyperon matter including hyperon-hyperon interaction on bulk viscosity. Equations of state are constructed within the framework of a relativistic field theoretical model where baryon-baryon interaction is mediated by the exchange of scalar and vector mesons. Hyperon-hyperon interaction is also taken into account by the exchange of two strange mesons. This interaction results in a smaller maximum mass neutron star compared with the case without the interaction. The coefficient of bulk viscosity due to the non-leptonic weak process is determined by these equations of state. The interacting hyperon matter reduces the bulk viscosity coefficient in a neutron star interior compared with the no interaction case. The r-mode instability is more effectively suppressed in hyperon-hyperon interaction case than that without the interaction.

Hadrons in compact stars

We discuss $β$-equilibrated and charge neutral matter involving hyperons and $\bar K$ condensates within relativistic models. It is observed that populations of baryons are strongly affected by the presence of antikaon condensates. Also, the equation of state including $\bar K$ condensates becomes softer resulting in a smaller maximum mass neutron star.

Exotica in rotating compact stars

The determination of mass and radius of a single neutron star EXO 0748-676 has been reported recently. Also, the estimate of radius from the measurement of moment of inertia of pulsar A in double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 would be possible in near future. Here we construct models of static and uniformly rotating neutron stars involving exotic matter and compare our theoretical calculations with the recent findings from observations to probe dense matter in neutron stars.

Strange matter in rotating compact stars

We have constructed equations of state involving various exotic forms of matter with large strangeness fraction such as hyperon matter, Bose-Einstein condensates of antikaons and strange quark matter. First order phase transitions from hadronic to antikaon condensed and quark matter are considered here. The hadronic phase is described by the relativistic field theoretical model. Later those equations of state are exploited to investigate models of uniformly rotating compact stars. The effect of rotation on the third family branch for the equation of state involving only antikaon condensates is investigated. We also discuss the back bending phenomenon due to a first order phase transition from $K^-$ condensed to quark matter.

Rotating compact stars with exotic matter

We have constructed models of uniformly rotating compact stars including hyperons, Bose-Einstein condensates of antikaons and quarks. First order phase transitions from hadronic to antikaon condensed matter and then to quark matter are considered here. For the equation of state undergoing phase transitions to antikaon condensates, the third family of compact stars are found to exist in the fixed angular velocity sequences. However, the third family solution disappears when the compact stars rotate very fast. For this equation of state, the fixed baryon number supramassive sequence shows a second stable part after the unstable region but no back bending phenomenon. On the other hand, we observe that the rotation gives rise to a second maximum beyond the neutron star maximum for the equation of state involving phase transitions to both antikaon condensed and quark matter. In this case, the back bending phenomenon has been observed in the supramassive sequence as a consequence of the first order phase transition from $K^-$ condensed to quark matter. And the back bending segment contains stable configurations of neutron stars.

Exotic phases in compact stars

We discuss how the co-existence of hyperons, antikaon condensate and color superconducting quark matter in neutron star interior influences the gross properties of compact stars such as, the equation of state and mass-radius relationship. We compare our results with the recent observations. We also discuss about superdense stars in the third family branch which may contain a pure color-flavor-locked (CFL) core.

Color superconducting quark matter core in the third family of compact stars

We investigate first order phase transitions from $β$-equilibrated hadronic matter to color flavor locked quark matter in compact star interior. The hadronic phase including hyperons and Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^-$ mesons is described by the relativistic field theoretical model with density dependent meson-baryon couplings. The early appearance of hyperons and/or Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^-$ mesons delays the onset of phase transition to higher density. In the presence of hyperons and/or $K^-$ condensate, the overall equations of state become softer resulting in smaller maximum masses than the cases without hyperons and $K^-$ condensate. We find that the maximum mass neutron stars may contain a mixed phase core of hyperons, $K^-$ condensate and color superconducting quark matter. Depending on the parameter space, we also observe that there is a stable branch of superdense stars called the third family branch beyond the neutron star branch. Compact stars in the third family branch may contain pure color superconducting core and have radii smaller than those of the neutron star branch. Our results are compared with the recent observations on RX J185635-3754 and the recently measured mass-radius relationship by X-ray Multi Mirror-Newton Observatory.

Density dependent hadron field theory for neutron stars with antikaon condensates

We investigate $K^-$ and $\bar K^0$ condensation in $β$-equilibrated hyperonic matter within a density dependent hadron field theoretical model. In this model, baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by the exchange of mesons. Density dependent meson-baryon coupling constants are obtained from microscopic Dirac Brueckner calculations using Groningen and Bonn A nucleon-nucleon potential. It is found that the threshold of antikaon condensation is not only sensitive to the equation of state but also to antikaon optical potential depth. Only for large values of antikaon optical potential depth, $K^-$ condensation sets in even in the presence of negatively charged hyperons. The threshold of $\bar K^0$ condensation is always reached after $K^-$ condensation. Antikaon condensation makes the equation of state softer thus resulting in smaller maximum mass stars compared with the case without any condensate.

Bose-Einstein condensation in dense nuclear matter and strong magnetic fields

Bose-Einstein condensation of antikaons in cold and dense beta-equilibrated matter under the influence of strong magnetic fields is studied within a relativistic mean field model. For magnetic fields $> 5 \times 10^{18}$G, the phase spaces of charged particles are modified resulting in compositional changes in the system. The threshold density of $K^-$ condensation is shifted to higher density compared with the field free case. In the presence of strong fields, the equation of state becomes stiffer than that of the zero field case.

Bose-Einstein condensation in dense matter and the third family of compact stars

We investigate antikaon condensation in compact star matter using a relativistic mean field model. Antikaon condensates make the equation of state softer resulting in a smaller maximum mass star compared to the case without condensate. It is found that the equation of state including antikaon condensates gives rise to a stable sequence of compact stars called the third family beyond the neutron star branch.

A third family of super dense stars in the presence of antikaon condensates

The formation of $K^-$ and $\bar K^0$ condensation in $β$-equilibrated hyperonic matter is investigated within a relativistic mean field model. In this model, baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by the exchange of mesons. It is found that antikaon condensation is not only sensitive to the equation of state but also to antikaon optical potential depth. For large values of antikaon optical potential depth, $K^-$ condensation sets in before the appearance of negatively charged hyperons. We treat $K^-$ condensation as a first order phase transition. The Gibbs criteria and global charge conservation laws are used to describe the mixed phase. Nucleons and $Λ$ hyperons behave dynamically in the mixed phase. A second order phase transition to $\bar K^0$ condensation occurs in the pure $K^-$ condensed phase. Along with $K^-$ condensation, $\bar K^0$ condensation makes the equation of state softer thus resulting in smaller maximum mass stars compared with the case without any condensate. This equation of state also leads to a stable sequence of compact stars called the third family branch, beyond the neutron star branch. The compact stars in the third family branch have different compositions and smaller radii than that of the neutron star branch.

Antikaon condensation and the metastability of protoneutron stars

We investigate the condensation of $\bar K^0$ meson along with $K^-$ condensation in the neutrino trapped matter with and without hyperons. Calculations are performed in the relativistic mean field models in which both the baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by meson exchange. In the neutrino trapped matter relevant to protoneutron stars, the critical density of $K^-$ condensation is shifted considerably to higher density whereas that of $\bar K^0$ condensation is shifted slightly to higher density with respect to that of the neutrino free case. The onset of $K^-$ condensation always occurs earlier than that of $\bar K^0$ condensation. A significant region of maximum mass protoneutron stars is found to contain $\bar K^0$ condensate for larger values of the antikaon potential. With the appearance of $\bar K^0$ condensation, there is a region of symmetric nuclear matter in the inner core of a protoneutron star. It is found that the maximum mass of a protoneutron star containing $K^-$ and $\bar K^0$ condensate is greater than that of the corresponding neutron star. We revisit the implication of this scenario in the context of the metastability of protoneutron stars and their evolution to low mass black holes.

Antikaon condensation in neutron stars

We investigate the condensation of charged $K^-$ meson and neutral $\bar K^0$ meson in dense neutron star matter. Calculations are performed in relativistic mean field models in which both the baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by meson exchange. It is found that $\bar K^0$ condensation is quite sensitive to the antikaon optical potential and depends more strongly on the nucleonic equation of state. For moderate values of antikaon potential and a rather stiff equation of state, a significant region of maximum mass star will contain $\bar K^0$ meson. The critical density of $\bar K^0$ condensation is always higher than that of $K^-$ condensation. With the appearance of $K^-$ and $\bar K^0$ condensates, pairs of $p-K^-$ and $n-\bar K^0$ are produced with equal proportion leading to a perfectly symmetric matter of nucleons and antikaons in neutron stars. Along with $K^-$ condensate, $\bar K^0$ condensate makes the equation of state much softer resulting in smaller maximum mass stars compared to the case without any condensate.

Nuclear symmetry energy in presence of hyperons in the nonrelativistic Thomas-Fermi approximation

We generalise the finite range momentum and density dependent Seyler-Blanchard nucleon-nucleon effective interaction to the case of interaction between two baryons. This effective interaction is then used to describe dense hadronic matter relevant to neutron stars in the nonrelativistic Thomas-Fermi approach. We investigate the behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy in dense nuclear and hyperon matter relevant to neutron stars. It is found that the nuclear symmetry energy always increases with density in hyperon matter unlike the situation in nuclear matter. This rising characteristic of the symmetry energy in presence of hyperons may have significant implications on the mass-radius relationship and the cooling properties of neutron stars. We have also noted that with the appearance of hyperons, the equation of state calculated in this model remains causal at high density.

Strong magnetic field in a protoneutron star

We investigate the influence of a strong interior magnetic field on the structure and composition of a protoneutron star allowing quark-hadron phase transition. In contrast to protoneutron stars with noninteracting quark phase, the stars with interacting quark phase have smaller maximum star masses than those of neutrino-free stars. The strong field makes the overall equation of state softer compared to the field-free case favoring the evolution of a protoneutron star more towards a neutron star than a black hole.

Rapid cooling of magnetized neutron stars

The neutrino emissivities resulting from direct URCA processes in neutron stars are calculated in a relativistic Dirac-Hartree approach in presence of a magnetic field. In a quark or a hyperon matter environment, the emissivity due to nucleon direct URCA processes is suppressed relative to that from pure nuclear matter. In all the cases studied, the magnetic field enhances emissivity compared to the field-free cases.
