Bulk metric reconstruction from boundary entanglement

Most of the literature in the \emph{bulk reconstruction program} in holography focuses on recovering local bulk operators propagating on a quasilocal bulk geometry and the knowledge of the bulk geometry is always assumed or guessed. The fundamental problem of the bulk reconstruction program, which is \emph{recovering the bulk background geometry (metric)} from the boundary CFT state is still outstanding. In this work, we formulate a recipe to extract the bulk metric itself from the boundary state, specifically, the modular Hamiltonian information of spherical subregions in the boundary. Our recipe exploits the recent construction of Kabat and Lifschytz \cite{Kabat:2017mun} to first compute the bulk two point function of scalar fields directly in the CFT without knowledge of the bulk metric or the equations of motion, and then to take a large scaling dimension limit (WKB) to extract the geodesic distance between two close points in the bulk i.e. the metric. As a proof of principle, we consider three dimensional bulk and selected CFT states such as the vacuum and the thermofield double states. We show that they indeed reproduce the pure AdS and the regions outside the Rindler wedge and the BTZ black hole \emph{up to a rigid conformal factor}. Since our approach does not rely on symmetry properties of the CFT state, it can be applied to reconstruct asymptotically AdS geometries dual to arbitrary general CFT states provided the modular Hamiltonian is available. We discuss several obvious extensions to the case of higher spacetime dimensions as well as some future applications, in particular, for constructing metric beyond the causal wedge of a boundary region. In the process, we also extend the construction of \cite{Kabat:2017mun} to incorporate the first order perturbative locality for AdS scalars.

The quantum fate of black hole horizons

The presence of a horizon is the principal marker for black holes as they appear in the classical theory of gravity. In General Relativity (GR), horizons have several defining properties. First, there exists a static spherically symmetric solution to vacuum Einstein equations which possesses a horizon defined as a null-surface on which the time-like Killing vector becomes null. Second, in GR, a co-dimension two sphere of minimal area is necessarily a horizon. On a quantum level, the classical gravitational action is supplemented by the quantum effective action obtained by integrating out the quantum fields propagating on a classical background. In this note we consider the case when the quantum fields are conformal and perform a certain non-perturbative analysis of the semiclassical equations obtained by varying the complete gravitational action. We show that, for these equations, both of the above aspects do not hold. More precisely, we prove that i) a static spherically symmetric metric that would describe a horizon with a finite Hawking temperature is, generically, {\it not} a solution; ii) a minimal $2$-sphere is {\it not} a horizon but a tiny throat of a wormhole. We find certain bounds on the norm of the Killing vector at the throat and show that it is, while non-zero, an exponentially small function of the Bekenstein-Hawking (BH) entropy of the classical black hole. We also find that the possible temperature of the semiclassical geometry is exponentially small for large black holes. These findings suggest that a black hole in the classical theory can be viewed as a certain (singular) limit of the semiclassical wormhole geometry. We discuss the possible implications of our results.

Connecting Fisher information to bulk entanglement in holography

In the context of relating AdS/CFT to quantum information theory, we propose a holographic dual of Fisher information metric for mixed states in the boundary field theory. This amounts to a holographic measure for the distance between two mixed quantum states. For a spherical subregion in the boundary we show that this is related to a particularly regularized volume enclosed by the Ryu-Takayanagi surface. We further argue that the quantum correction to the proposed Fisher information metric is related to the quantum correction to the boundary entanglement entropy. We discuss consequences of this connection.

An AdS/EFT correspondence at large charge

Considering theories in sectors of large global charge $Q$ results in a semiclassical effective field theory (EFT) description for some strongly-coupled conformal field theories (CFTs) with continuous global symmetries. Hence, when studying dualities at large charge, we can have control over the strongly coupled side of the duality and gain perturbative access to both dual pairs. In this work we discuss the AdS/CFT correspondence in the regime $Q \gg C_T \gg 1$ where both the EFT and gravity descriptions are valid and stable ($C_T$ being the central charge). We present the observation that the ground state energy as a function of the Abelian charge $Q$ for a simple EFT in some three-dimensional CFT coincides with the expression for the mass of an anti-de Sitter-Reissner-Nordström black hole as a function of its charge. This observation allows us to introduce a dictionary relating CFT, EFT and holographic descriptions. We also find agreement for the higher-derivative corrections on both sides, suggesting a large-$C_T$ expansion on the EFT side.

Holographic bulk reconstruction beyond (super)gravity

We outline a holographic recipe to reconstruct $α'$ corrections to AdS (quantum) gravity from an underlying CFT in the strictly planar limit ($N\rightarrow\infty$). Assuming that the boundary CFT can be solved in principle to all orders of the 't Hooft coupling $λ$, for scalar primary operators, the $λ^{-1}$ expansion of the conformal dimensions can be mapped to higher curvature corrections of the dual bulk scalar field action. Furthermore, for the metric pertubations in the bulk, the AdS/CFT operator-field isomorphism forces these corrections to be of the Lovelock type. We demonstrate this by reconstructing the coefficient of the leading Lovelock correction, aka the Gauss-Bonnet term in a bulk AdS gravity action using the expression of stress-tensor two-point function up to sub-leading order in $λ^{-1}$.

Firewalls as artefacts of inconsistent truncations of quantum geometries

In this paper we argue that a firewall is simply a manifestation of an inconsistent truncation of non-perturbative effects that unitarize the semiclassical black hole. Namely, we show that a naive truncation of quantum corrections to the Hawking spectrum at order ${\cal O}(e^{-S})$, inexorably leads to a "localised'' divergent energy density near the black hole horizon. Nevertheless, in the same approximation, a distant observer only sees a discretised spectrum and concludes that unitarity is achieved by ${\cal O}(e^{-S})$ effects. This is due to the fact that instead, the correct quantum corrections to the Hawking spectrum go like ${\cal O}( g^{tt} e^{-S})$. Therefore, while at a distance far away from the horizon, where $g^{tt}\approx 1$, quantum corrections {\it are} perturbative, they {\it do} diverge close to the horizon, where $g^{tt}\rightarrow \infty$. Nevertheless, these "corrections" nicely re-sum so that correlations functions are smooth at the would-be black hole horizon. Thus, we conclude that the appearance of firewalls is just a signal of the breaking of the semiclassical approximation at the Page time, even for large black holes.

Hologram of a pure state black hole

In this paper we extend the HKLL holographic smearing function method to reconstruct (quasi)local AdS bulk scalar observables in the background of a large AdS black hole formed by null shell collapse (a "pure state" black hole), from the dual CFT which is undergoing a sudden quench. In particular, we probe the near horizon and sub-horizon bulk locality. First we construct local bulk operators from the CFT in the leading semiclassical limit, $N\rightarrow\infty$. Then we look at effects due to the finiteness of $N$, where we propose a suitable coarse-graining prescription involving early and late time cut-offs to define semiclassical bulk observables which are approximately local; their departure from locality being non-perturbatively small in $N$. Our results have important implications on the black hole information problem.

An Effective Hamiltonian Approach to Quantum Random Walk

In this article we present an effective Hamiltonian approach for Discrete Time Quantum Random Walk. A form of the Hamiltonian for one dimensional quantum walk has been prescribed, utilizing the fact that Hamiltonians are the generators of time translations. Then an attempt has been made to generalize the techniques to higher dimensions. We find that the Hamiltonian can be written as the sum of a Weyl Hamiltonian and a Dirac comb potential. The time evolution operator obtained from this prescribed Hamiltonian is in complete agreement with that of the standard approach. But in higher dimension we find that the time evolution operator is additive, instead of being multiplicative \cite{Chandrasekhar:2013SREP08229}. We showed that in case of two-step walk, effectively the time evolution operator can have multiplicative form. In case of a square lattice, quantum walk has been studied computationally for different coins and the results for both the additive and the multiplicative approaches have been compared. Using the Graphene Hamiltonian the walk has been studied on a Graphene lattice and we conclude the preference of additive approach over the multiplicative one.

Holographic Representation of Higher Spin Gauge Fields

Extending the results of \cite{Heem}, \cite{KLRS} on the holographic representation of local gauge field operators in anti de Sitter space, here we construct the bulk operators for higher spin gauge fields in the leading order of $\frac{1}{N}$ expansion. Working in holographic gauge for higher spin gauge fields, we show that gauge field operators with integer spin $s>1$ can be represented by an integration over a ball region, which is the interior region of the spacelike bulk lightcone on the boundary. The construction is shown to be AdS-covariant up to gauge transformations, and the two-point function between higher spin gauge fields and boundary higher spin current exhibit singularities on both bulk and boundary lightcones. We also comment on possible extension to the level of three-point functions and carry out a causal construction for higher spin fields in de Sitter spacetime.

(A)dS Holography with a Cut-off

We find out the smearing/ transfer functions that relate a local bulk operator with its boundary values at a cut-off surface located at $z=z_0$ of the AdS Poincaré patch. We compare these results with de Sitter counterparts and comment on their connections with corresponding construction for dS/ CFT. As the boundary values can help define the required field theory at $z=z_0$ and encode bulk locality in terms of it, our work can provide key information about holographic RG in the context of AdS/ CFT.

Spinning Fluids: A Group Theoretical Approach

We extend the Lagrangian formulation of relativistic non-abelian fluids in group theory language. We propose a Mathisson-Papapetrou equation for spinning fluids in terms of the reduction limit of de Sitter group. The equation we find correctly boils down to the one for non-spinning fluids. We study the application of our results for an FRW cosmological background for fluids with no vorticity and for dusts in the vicinity of a Kerr black hole. We also explore two alternative approaches based on a group theoretical formulation of particles dynamics.

Black Hole Formation in Fuzzy Sphere Collapse

We study the collapse of a fuzzy sphere, that is a spherical membrane built out of D0-branes, in the BFSS model. At weak coupling, as the sphere shrinks, open strings are produced. If the initial radius is large then open string production is not important and the sphere behaves classically. At intermediate initial radius the back-reaction from open string production is important but the fuzzy sphere retains its identity. At small initial radius the sphere collapses to form a black hole. The crossover between the later two regimes is smooth and occurs at the correspondence point of Horowitz and Polchinski.

Black Hole Formation at the Correspondence Point

We study the process of bound state formation in a D-brane collision. We consider two mechanisms for bound state formation. The first, operative at weak coupling in the worldvolume gauge theory, is pair creation of W-bosons. The second, operative at strong coupling, corresponds to formation of a large black hole in the dual supergravity. These two processes agree qualitatively at intermediate coupling, in accord with the correspondence principle of Horowitz and Polchinski. We show that the size of the bound state and timescale for formation of a bound state agree at the correspondence point. The timescale involves matching a parametric resonance in the gauge theory to a quasinormal mode in supergravity.

Cosmic string interactions induced by gauge and scalar fields

We study the interaction between two parallel cosmic strings induced by gauge fields and by scalar fields with non-minimal couplings to curvature. For small deficit angles the gauge field behaves like a collection of non-minimal scalars with a specific value for the non-minimal coupling. We check this equivalence by computing the interaction energy between strings at first order in the deficit angles. This result provides another physical context for the "contact terms" which play an important role in the renormalization of black hole entropy due to a spin-1 field.

Holographic representation of bulk fields with spin in AdS/CFT

We develop the representation of bulk fields with spin one and spin two in anti-de Sitter space, as non-local observables in the dual CFT. Working in holographic gauge in the bulk, at leading order in 1/N bulk gauge fields are obtained by smearing boundary currents over a sphere on the complexified boundary, while linearized metric fluctuations are obtained by smearing the boundary stress tensor over a ball. This representation respects AdS covariance up to a compensating gauge transformation. We also consider massive vector fields, where the bulk field is obtained by smearing a non-conserved current. We compute bulk two-point functions and show that bulk locality is respected. We show how to include interactions of massive vectors using 1/N perturbation theory, and we comment on the issue of general backgrounds.
