Constraining the history of reheating with the NANOGrav 15-year data

Over the last few years, primordial black holes (PBHs) have emerged as a strong candidate for cold dark matter. A significant number of PBHs are produced when the strength of the primordial scalar power spectrum is enhanced on small scales (compared to the COBE normalized values on large scales). Such primordial spectra also inevitably lead to strong amplification of the scalar-induced, secondary gravitational waves (GWs) at higher frequencies. The recent detection of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) by the pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) has opened up the possibility of directly probing the very early universe. Different studies have shown that, when PBHs are assumed to have been formed during the epoch of radiation domination, the mechanism for the amplification of the scalar-induced GWs that is required to explain the PTA data can overproduce the PBHs over some ranges of masses. In this work, we assume a specific functional form for the primordial scalar power spectrum and examine the production of PBHs and the scalar-induced secondary GWs during the phase of reheating, which precedes the standard epoch of radiation domination. Specifically, we account for the uncertainties in the conditions for the formation of PBHs and ensure that the extent of PBHs produced remains within the observational bounds. We find that the scalar-induced SGWB generated during a phase of reheating with a steeper equation of state (than that of radiation) fit the NANOGrav 15-year data with a stronger Bayesian evidence than the astrophysical scenario involving GWs produced by merging supermassive binary black holes.

Black holes in thermal bath live shorter: implications for primordial black holes

Hawking radiation from a non-extremal black hole is known to be approximately Planckian. The thermal spectrum receives multiple corrections including greybody factors and due to kinematical restrictions on the infrared and ultraviolet frequencies. We show that another significant correction to the spectrum arises if the black hole is assumed to live in a thermal bath and the emitted radiation gets thermalised at the bath temperature. This modification reshapes the thermal spectrum, and leads to appreciable deviation from standard results including modification in the decay rate of black holes. We argue that this altered decay rate has significance for cosmology and, in a realistic setting, show that it alters the life time of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early universe. In particular, the very light PBHs formed right after the end of inflation decay faster which may have interesting phenomenological implications.

Study of a Tilted Thin Accretion Disk around a Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole

The accreting collapsed object GRO J1655-40 could contain the gravitomagnetic monopole (GMM), and it was shown to be better described by the Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime instead of the Kerr spacetime. The warped accretion disk has also been observed for the same collapsed object. Motivated by these, we study a tilted thin inner accretion disk around a KTN black hole. Such a tilting could have a significant effect on the X-ray spectral and timing features via the Lense-Thirring effect. Taking into account the contribution from the inner accretion disk for the KTN black hole, here we calculate the radial profile of a tilt angle. Depending on the numerical values of the viscosity of the accreting material and Kerr parameter, GMM tends the angular momentum of the disk to align along the black hole's spin axis, or to make it more tilted. Our solution for the radial profile of the tilted disk around a KTN black hole could be useful to probe the strong gravity regime, and could also give indirect evidence for the existence of GMM in nature.

Effect of scalar condensation on fermionic pole-skipping

In this paper, we investigated the holographic fermionic pole-skipping phenomena for a class of interacting theory in a charged AdS black hole background. We have studied two types of fermion-scalar interactions in the bulk: Dipole and Yukawa type interaction. Depending upon the interaction we introduced both real and charged scalar fields. We have particularly analyzed the effect of scalar condensation on the fermionic pole-skipping points and discussed their behaviour near critical temperatures.

Pole-skipping and chaos in D3-D7 brane systems

In this paper, we analyse the pole-skipping phenomena of finite temperature Yang-Mills theory with quark flavors which is dual to D3-D7 brane systems in bulk. We also consider the external electric field in the boundary field theory which is dual to the world volume electric field on the D7 brane. We will work in the probe limit where the D7 branes do not back-react to the D3 brane background. In this scenario, we decode the characteristic parameters of the chaos namely, Lyapunov exponent $λ_{L}$ and butterfly velocity $v_b$ from the pole-skipping points by performing the near effective horizon analysis of the linearised Einstein equations. Unlike pure Yang-Mills, once charged quarks with a background electric field are added into the system, the characteristic parameters of the chaos show non-trivial dependence on the quark mass and external electric field. We have observed that $λ_{L}$ and $v_b$ decreases with increasing electric field. We further perform the pole-skipping analysis for the gauge invariant sound, shear, and tensor modes of the perturbation in the bulk and discuss their physical importance in the holographic context.

Sonoluminescence: Photon production in time dependent analog system

Sonoluminescence is a well known laboratory phenomenon where an oscillating gas bubble in the appropriate environment periodically emits a flash of light in the visible frequency range. In this submission, we study the system in the framework of analog gravity. We model the oscillating bubble in terms of analog geometry and propose a non-minimal coupling prescription of the electromagnetic field with the geometry. The geometry behaves as an analogous oscillating time dependent background in which repeated flux of photons are produced in a wide frequency range through parametric resonance from quantum vacuum. Due to our numerical limitation, we could reach the frequency up to $\sim 10^5 ~\mbox{m}^{-1}$. However, we numerically fit the spectrum in a polynomial form including the observed frequency range around $\sim 10^7 ~\mbox{m}^{-1}$. Our current analysis seems to suggest that parametric resonance in analog background may play a fundamental role in explaining such phenomena in the quantum field theory framework.

Sonofermionescence: Fermions from Ringing Bubble of Sonoluminescence

Time-dependent gravitational background is well known as a theoretical laboratory for quantum mechanical particle production. In the present analysis, we explore such production in a time-dependent analog system. This is the follow-up of our earlier study on the Sonoluminescence phenomenon, which is modelled in terms of analog geometry coupled with the electromagnetic field exhibiting the quantum production of photons. In the same analog geometry, we studied fermion production. Although fermions have not been observed yet in the sonoluminescence experiment, we have shown here that such a system can produce a repeated flux of fermions via the parametric resonance from a quantum vacuum. Our analysis seems to suggest that in the laboratory setup, time-dependent analog systems could be an interesting playground where phenomena of quantum mechanical particle production can be observed.

Primordial black hole versus inflaton

We compare the dark matter(DM) production processes and its parameters space in the background of reheating obtained from two chief systems in the early Universe: the inflaton $ϕ$ and the primordial black holes (PBHs). We concentrated on the mechanism where DMs are universally produced only from the PBH decay and the generation of the standard model plasma from both inflton and PBHs. Whereas the distribution of Primordial Black Holes behaves like dust, the inflaton phenomenology depends strongly on its equation of state after the inflationary phase, which in turn is conditioned by the nature of the potential $V(ϕ)$. Depending upon the initial mass and population of PBHs, a large range of DM mass is shown to be viable if reheating is controlled by PBHs itself. Inflaton-dominated reheating is observed to further widen such possibilities depending on the initial population of black holes and its mass as well as the coupling of the inflaton to the standard model sector.

Quantum effects on the evaporation of PBHs: contributions to dark matter

We compute the relic abundance of dark matter in the presence of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) beyond the semiclassical approximation. We take into account the quantum corrections due to the memory burden effect, which is assumed to suppress the black hole evaporation rate by the inverse power of its own entropy. Such quantum effect significantly enhances the lifetime, rendering the possibility of PBH mass $\lesssim 10^{9}$ g being the sole dark matter (DM) candidate. However, Nature can not rule out the existence of fundamental particles such as DM. We, therefore, include the possibility of populating the dark sector by the decay of PBHs to those fundamental particles, adding the contribution to stable PBH whose lifetime is extended due to the quantum corrections. Depending on the strength of the burden effect, we show that a wide range of parameter space opens up in the initial PBH mass and fundamental dark matter mass plane that respects the correct relic abundance.

Study of relativistic hot accretion flow around Kerr-like Wormhole

We investigate the structure of relativistic, low-angular momentum, inviscid advective accretion flow in a stationary axisymmetric Kerr-like wormhole (WH) spacetime, characterized by the spin parameter ($a_{\rm k}$), the dimensionless parameter ($β$), and the source mass ($M_{\rm WH}$). In doing so, we self-consistently solve the set of governing equations describing the relativistic accretion flow around a Kerr-like WH in the steady state, and for the first time, we obtain all possible classes of global accretion solutions for transonic as well as subsonic flows. We study the properties of dynamical and thermodynamical flow variables and examine how the nature of the accretion solutions alters due to the change of the model parameters, namely energy ($\mathcal{E}$), angular momentum ($λ$), $a_{\rm k}$, and $β$. Further, we separate the parameter space in $λ-\mathcal{E}$ plane according to the nature of the flow solutions, and study the modification of the parameter space by varying $a_{\rm k}$ and $β$. Moreover, we retrace the parameter space in $a_{\rm k}-β$ plane that allows accretion solutions containing multiple critical points. Finally, we calculate the disc luminosity ($L$) considering free-free emissions for transonic solutions as these solutions are astrophysically relevant and discuss the implication of this model formalism in the context of astrophysical applications.

Gravitational neutrino reheating

Despite having important cosmological implications, the reheating phase is believed to play a crucial role in cosmology and particle physics model building. Conventionally, the model of reheating with an arbitrary coupling of inflaton to massless fields naturally lacks precise prediction and hence difficult to verify through observation. In this paper, we propose a simple and natural reheating mechanism where the particle physics model, namely the Type-I seesaw is shown to play a major role in the entire reheating process where inflaton is coupled with all the fields only gravitationally. Besides successfully resolving the well-known neutrino mass and baryon asymmetry problems, this scenario offers successful reheating, predicts distinct primordial gravitational wave spectrum and non-vanishing lowest active neutrino mass. Our novel mechanism opens up a new avenue of integrating particle physics and cosmology in the context of reheating.

Magnetogenesis from Anisotropic Universe

The existence of large-scale anisotropy can not be ruled out by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Over the years, several models have been proposed in the context of anisotropic inflation to account for CMB's cold spot and hemispheric asymmetry. However, any small-scale anisotropy, if exists during inflation, is not constrained due to its nonlinear evolution in the subsequent phase. This small-scale anisotropy during inflation can play a non-trivial role in giving rise to the cosmic magnetic field, which is the subject of our present study. Assuming a particular phenomenological form of an anisotropic inflationary universe, we have shown that it can generate a large-scale magnetic field at $1$-Mpc scale with a magnitude $\sim 4\times 10^{-20}~G$, within the observed bound. Because of the anisotropy, the conformal flatness property is lost, and the Maxwell field is generated even without explicit coupling. This immediately resolves the strong coupling problem in the standard magnetogenesis scenario. In addition, assuming very low conductivity during the reheating era, we can further observe the evolution of the electromagnetic field with the equation of state (EoS) $ω_{eff}$ and its effects on the present-day magnetic field.

Squeezing, Chaos and Thermalization in Periodically Driven Quantum Systems: The Case of Bosonic Preheating

The phenomena of Squeezing and chaos have recently been studied in the context of inflation. We apply this formalism in the post-inflationary preheating phase. During this phase, inflaton field undergoes quasi-periodic oscillation, which acts as a driving force for the resonant growth of quantum fluctuation or particle production. Furthermore, the quantum state of the fluctuations is known to have evolved into a squeezed state. In this submission, we explore the underlying connection between the resonant growth, squeezing, and chaos by computing the Out of Time Order Correlator (OTOC) of phase space variables and establishing a relation among the Lyapunov, Floquet exponents, and squeezing parameters. For our study, we consider observationally favored $α$-attractor E-model of inflaton which is coupled with the bosonic field. After the production, the system of produced bosonic fluctuations/particles from the inflaton is supposed to thermalize, and that is believed to have an intriguing connection to the nature of chaos of the system under perturbation. %By using this we calculated approximate lower bound of temperature ${\bar T}_{\rm MSS}$. We conjecture a relation between the thermalization temperature $({\bar T}_{\rm SS})$ of the system and quantum squeezing, which is further shown to be consistent with the well-known Rayleigh-Jeans formula for the temperature symbolized as ${\bar T}_{\rm RJ}$, and that is ${\bar T}_{\rm SS} \simeq {\bar T}_{\rm RJ}$. Finally, we show that the system temperature is in accord with the well-known lower bound on the temperature of a chaotic system proposed by Maldacena-Shenker-Stanford (MSS).

WIMPs, FIMPs, and Inflaton phenomenology via reheating, CMB and $ΔN_{eff}$

In this paper, we extensively analyzed the reheating dynamics after inflation and looked into its possible implication on dark matter (DM) and inflaton phenomenology. We studied the reheating through various possible channels of inflaton going into massless scalars (bosonic reheating) and fermions (fermionic reheating) via non-gravitational and gravity-mediated decay processes. We further include the finite temperature effect on the decay process. Along with their precise roles in governing the dynamics, we compared the relative importance of different temperature-corrected decay channels in the gradual process of reheating depending on the reheating equation of state (EoS), which is directly related to inflaton potential. Particularly, the universal gravitational decay of inflaton is observed to play a very crucial role in the reheating process for a large range of inflaton decay parameters. For our study, we consider typical $α$-attractor inflationary models. We further establish the intriguing connection among those different inflaton decay channels and the CMB power spectrum that can have profound implications in building up a unified model of inflation, reheating, and DM. We analyze both fermion and scalar DM with different physical processes being involved, such as gravitational scattering, thermal bath scattering, and direct inflaton decay. Gravitational decay can again be observed to play a crucial role in setting the maximum limit on DM mass that has already been observed earlier in the literature [52]. Depending on the coupling strength, we have analyzed in detail the production of both FIMP and WIMP-like DM during reheating and their detailed phenomenological implications from the perspective of various cosmological and laboratory experiments.

Inflaton phenomenology via reheating in light of primordial gravitational waves and the latest BICEP/$Keck$ data

We are in the era of precision cosmology which offers us a unique opportunity to investigate beyond standard model physics. Toward this endeavor, inflaton is assumed to be a perfect new physics candidate. In this submission, we explore the phenomenological impact of the latest observation of PLANCK and BICEP/$Keck$ data on the physics of inflation. We particularly study three different models of inflation, namely $α$-attractor E, T, and the minimal plateau model. We further consider two different post-inflationary reheating dynamics driven by inflaton decaying into bosons and fermions. Given the latest data in the inflationary $(n_s-r)$ plane, we derive detailed phenomenological constraints on different inflaton parameters and the associated physical quantities, such as inflationary $e$-folding number, $N_{ k}$, reheating temperatures $T_{\rm re}$. Apart from considering direct observational data, we further incorporate the bounds from primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) and different theoretical constraints. Rather than in the laboratory, our results illustrate the potential of present and future cosmological observations to look for new physics in the sky.

Gravitational reheating

Our present understanding of the reheating phase is incomplete due to a lack of observations. Apart from its cosmological implications, the reheating should play a vital role in particle physics and inflation model building. Conventionally reheating dynamics are modeled by invoking arbitrary coupling among the inflaton and daughter fields. Such an approach lacks robust cosmological predictions due to its arbitrary couplings and is difficult to verify through observation. In this paper, we propose a minimal reheating scenario where the inflaton is coupled with all the daughter fields only gravitationally. Besides being successful in reheating the Universe, the scenario offers a strong cosmological prediction of the primordial gravitational wave spectrum and discards a large number of possible models of dark matter and inflation that are otherwise consistent with Planck.

Primordial Black Hole Reheating

Post-inflationary reheating phase is usually said to be solely governed by the decay of coherently oscillating inflaton into radiation. In this submission, we explore a new avenue toward reheating through the evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs). After the inflation, if PBHs form, depending on its initial mass, abundance, and inflaton coupling with the radiation, we found two physically distinct possibilities of reheating the universe. In one possibility, the thermal bath is solely obtained from the decay of PBHs while inflaton plays the role of dominant energy component in the entire process. In the other possibility, we found that PBHs itself dominate the total energy budget of the Universe during the course of evolution, and then its subsequent evaporation leads to radiation dominated universe. Furthermore, we analyze the impact of both monochromatic and extended PBH mass functions and estimate the detailed parameter ranges for which those distinct reheating histories are realized.

Probing Non-classicality of Primordial Gravitational Waves and Magnetic Field Through Quantum Poincare Sphere

The universe is believed to be originated from a quantum state. However, defining measurable quantities for the quantum properties in the present universe has gained interest recently. In this submission, we propose a quantum Poincare sphere as an observable quantity that can hint at the quantumness of primordial gravitational waves and large-scale magnetic fields. The Poincare sphere is defined in terms of quantum stokes operators associated with the polarization of those fields, which can be measured directly. We have further studied the effects of the initial non-BD vacuum on the power spectrum and squeezing parameter of the primordial gravitational waves and magnetic field. We have found that the initial non-BD vacuum increases the value of the squeezing parameter as expected at the end of inflation, which further enhances the possibility of measuring the quantumness of the fields under consideration. To support our results, we further explored the possible Bell violation test for a set of generalized pseudo spin operators defined in the polarization space of those fields.
