Shocks in relativistic viscous accretion flows around Kerr black holes

We study the relativistic viscous accretion flows around the Kerr black holes. We present the governing equations that describe the steady state flow motion in full general relativity and solve them in 1.5D to obtain the complete set of global transonic solutions in terms of the flow parameters, namely specific energy (${\cal E}$), specific angular momentum (${\cal L}$) and viscosity ($α$). We obtain a new type of accretion solution which was not reported earlier. Further, we show for the first time to the best of our knowledge that viscous accretion solutions may contain shock waves particularly when flow simultaneously passes through both inner critical point ($r_{\rm in}$) and outer critical point ($r_{\rm out}$) before entering into the Kerr black holes. We examine the shock properties, namely shock location ($r_s$) and compression ratio ($R$, the measure of density compression across the shock front) and show that shock can form for a large region of parameter space in ${\cal L}-{\cal E}$ plane. We study the effect of viscous dissipation on the shock parameter space and find that parameter space shrinks as $α$ is increased. We also calculate the critical viscosity parameter ($α^{\rm cri}$) beyond which standing shock solutions disappear and examine the correlation between the black hole spin ($a_k$) and $α^{\rm cri}$. Finally, the relevance of our work is conferred where, using $r_s$ and $R$, we empirically estimate the oscillation frequency of the shock front ($ν_{QPO}$) when it exhibits Quasi-periodic (QP) variations. The obtained results indicate that the present formalism seems to be potentially viable to account for the QPO frequency in the range starting from milli-Hz to kilo-Hz as $0.386~{\rm Hz}\le ν_{QPO} \left(\frac{10M_\odot}{M_{BH}} \right) \le 1312$ Hz for $a_k=0.99$, where $M_{BH}$ stands for the black hole mass.

Probing the Holographic Fermi Arc with scalar field: Numerical and analytical study

Fermi arcs are disconnected contour of Fermi surface, which can be observed in the pseudo-gap phase of high temperature superconductors. Aiming to understand this pseudo-gap phenomena, we study a holographic Fermionic system coupled with a massive scalar field in an AdS black hole background. Depending on the boundary condition on the scalar field mode, we discuss two possible scenarios. When the scalar condenses below a critical temperature $T_c$, the Fermi surface undergoes a transition from normal phase to pseudo-gap phase. Hence $T_c$ can be the reminiscent of well-known cross over temperature $T^*$ in cuprate superconductor, below which pseudo-gap appears at constant doping. In the second scenario, the bulk scalar develops a non-normalizable profile at arbitrary temperature for non-zero source at the boundary. Therefore, we can tune the Fermi spectrum by tuning a dual source at the boundary. The dual source for this case can be the reminiscent of hole doping in the real cuprate superconductor. For both the cases we have studied Fermi spectrum and observed anisotropic gap in the spectral function depending on the model parameter and studied the properties of Fermi arcs across different phases.

CMB constraints on dark matter phenomenology via reheating in minimal plateau inflation

We consider the CMB constraints on reheating and dark matter parameter space for a specific plateau type inflationary model. The plateau inflationary models which are currently most favored models from data can be well approximated by a potential of the form $V(ϕ)\propto ϕ^n$ around $ϕ=0$. This fact makes it possible to study the reheating phase with general inflaton equation of state in a viable cosmological scenario. In addition, following our recent work[1], we generalize the connection between reheating and the present CMB data and the dark matter parameter space for general inflaton equation of state parameter.

Towards Searching for Entangled Photons in the CMB Sky

We explore the possibility of detecting entangled photon pairs from cosmic microwave background or other cosmological sources coming from two patches of the sky. The measurements use two detectors with different photon polarizer directions. When two photon sources are separated by a large angle relative to the earth, such that each detector has only one photon source in its field of view, a null test of unentangled photons can be performed. The deviation from this unentangled background is, in principle, the signature of photon entanglement. To confirm whether the deviation is consistent with entangled photons, we derive a photon polarization correlation to compare with, similar to that in a Bell inequality measurement. However, since photon coincidence measurement cannot be used to discriminate unentangled cosmic photons, it is unlikely that the correlation expectation value alone can violate Bell inequality to provide the signature for entanglement.

Reheating Constraints on Inflaton, Dark Matter: Swampland Conjecture

In this paper, we studied the phenomenological consequences of recently proposed swampland conjecture on the inflationary models though constraints on reheating. If dark matter is assumed to be produced during reheating, the conjecture will provide further constraints on the dark matter parameter space through its current relic abundance. As has been pointed out already and also analyzed in our present paper any successful inflationary scenario is in clear tension with the aforementioned conjecture in its current form. However considering the swampland parameters to be free and constrained by the inflationary observables, we studied in detail its consequence on the reheating and dark matter phenomenology. We point out the connection between swampland conjecture and the scalar spectral index $n_s$ by PLANCK within current $2 σ$ range, and associated constraints imposed on the reheating temperature and the dark matter annihilation cross-section.

Minimal inflationary cosmologies and constraints on reheating

With the growing consensus on simple power law inflation models not being favored by the PLANCK observation, dynamics for the non-standard form of the inflaton potential gain significant interest in the recent past. In this paper, we analyze in great detail classes of phenomenologically motivated inflationary models with non-polynomial potential which are the generalization of the potential introduced in \cite{mhiggs}. After the end of inflation, inflaton field will coherently oscillate around its minimum. Depending upon the initial amplitude of the oscillation and coupling parameters standard parametric resonance phenomena will occur. Therefore, we will study how the inflationary model parameters play an important role in understanding the resonant structure of our model under study. Subsequently, the universe will go through the perturbative reheating phase. However, without any specific model consideration, we further study the constraints on our models based on model independent reheating constraint analysis.

Minimal plateau inflationary cosmologies and constraints from reheating

With the growing consensus on simple power law inflation models not being favored by the PLANCK observations, dynamics for the non-standard inflation gain significant interest in the recent past. In this paper, we analyze in detail a class of supergravity inspired phenomenological inflationary models with non-polynomial potential based on Maity (Nucl.Phys. B919 (2017) 560), and compare the model predictions with the currently most favored Starobinsky and its generalized $α$-attractor models in the ($n_s$ , $r$) plane constrained by PLANCK. Importantly for a wide range of parameter space, our model provides successful inflation in the sub-Planckian regime. We also have performed model independent analysis of reheating in terms of the effective equation of state parameter. In particular, we consider two stages of reheating dynamics with generalized inflaton equation of state in the initial and relativistic equation of state in the later phase. Finally, we show how our generalized reheating analysis constrains the inflation models under consideration

Connecting CMB anisotropy and cold dark matter phenomenology via reheating

Understanding the properties of dark matter has proved to be one of the most challenging problems of particle phenomenology. In this paper, we have tried to understand the phenomenology of dark matter in light of very well understood properties of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. To connect these two, inflation and its subsequent evolution known as the reheating phase play the important role. Following the previous analysis, we first established a one-to-one correspondence between the CMB power spectrum and the reheating temperature assuming the perturbative reheating scenario. Further by incorporating a possible dark matter candidate through the radiation annihilation process during reheating and the current value of dark matter abundance, we constrain the dark matter parameter space through the inflationary power spectrum for different inflationary models.

Limitations of Pseudo-Newtonian approach in studying the accretion flow around Kerr black hole

We study the relativistic accretion flow around a generic stationary axisymmetric space-time and obtain an effective potential ($Φ^{\rm eff}$) that accurately mimics the general relativistic features of Kerr black hole having spin $0\le a_k <1$. Considering the accretion disc confined around the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole and using the relativistic equation of state, we examine the properties of the relativistic accretion flow and compare it with the same obtained form semi-relativistic as well as non-relativistic accretion flows. Towards this, we first investigate the transonic properties of the accretion flow around the rotating black hole where good agreement is observed for relativistic and semi-relativistic flows. Further, we study the non-linearities such as shock waves in accretion flow. Here also we find that the shock properties are in agreement for both relativistic and semi-relativistic flows irrespective of the black hole spin ($a_k$), although it deviates significantly for non-relativistic flow. In fact, when the particular shocked solutions are compared for flows with identical outer boundary conditions, the positions of shock transition in relativistic and semi-relativistic flows agree well with deviation of $6-12\%$ for $0 \le a_k \le 0.99$, but vast disagreement is observed for non-relativistic flow. In addition, we compare the parameter space for shock to establish the fact that relativistic as well as semi-relativistic accretion flow dynamics do show close agreement irrespective of $a_k$ values, whereas non-relativistic flow fails to do so. With these findings, we point out that semi-relativistic flow including $Φ^{\rm eff}$ satisfactorily mimics the relativistic accretion flows around Kerr black hole. Finally, we discuss the possible implications of this work in the context of dissipative advective accretion flow around Kerr black holes.

Studying G-axion Inflation model in light of PLANCK

With the Planck 2015 result, most of the well known canonical large field inflation models turned out to be strongly disfavored. Axion inflation is one of such models which is becoming marginalized with the increasing precession of CMB data. In this paper, we have shown that with a simple Galileon type modification to the marginally favored axion model calling G-axion, we can turn them into one of the most favored models with its detectable prediction of $r$ and $n_s$ within its PLANCK $1σ$ range for a wide range of parameters. Interestingly it is this modification which plays the important role in turning the inflationary predictions to be independent of the explicit value of axion decay constant $f$. However, dynamics after the inflation turned out to have a non-trivial dependence on $f$. For each G-axion model there exists a critical value of $f_c$ such that for $f>f_c$ we have the oscillating phase after inflation and for $f<f_c$ we have non-oscillatory phase. Therefore, we obtained a range of sub-Planckian value of model parameters which give rise to consistent inflation. However for sub-Planckian axion decay constant the inflaton field configuration appeared to be singular after the end of inflation. To reheat the universe we, therefore, employ the instant preheating mechanism at the instant of first zero crossing of the inflaton. To our surprise, the instant preheating mechanism turned out to be inefficient as opposed to usual non-oscillatory quintessence model. For another class of G-axion model with super-Planckian axion decay constant, we performed in detail the reheating constraints analysis considering the latest PLANCK result.

Symmetries near a generic charged null surface and associated algebra: an off-shell analysis

To understand the underlying degrees of freedom, near horizon symmetry analysis of a black has gain significant interest in the recent past. In this paper we generalized those analysis first by taking into account a generic null surface carrying $U(1)$ electromagnetic charge. With the appropriate boundary conditions near the surface under study, we identified the symmetry algebra among the subset of diffeomporphism and gauge generators which preserve the metric of the null surface and the form of the gauge field configuration. With the knowledge of those symmetries we further derived the algebra among the associated charges considering general Lanczos-Lovelock gravity theory and gauge theory. Importantly while computing the charges we not only considered general theory, but also used off-shell formalism which is believed to play crucial role in understanding quantum gravity. Both the non-extremal and extremal cases are addressed here.

Constraints through decaying inflaton: maximum reheating temperature

In this paper we study the reheating constraints on inflationary models considering perturbatively decaying inflaton. Important difference with the existing analysis is the inclusion of explicit decaying dynamics of inflaton during reheating. One of the important findings of our analysis is the possible existence of maximum reheating temperature $T_{re}^{max}$ considering perturbative reheating scenario. For all the models under consideration the value of this temperature turned out to be $T_{re}^{max} \sim 10^{15}$ GeV. Corresponding to this value of reheating temperature the duration of reheating period assumes naturally small value, $N_{re} \simeq 0.3$ which indicates instantaneous reheating. Most importantly, maximum reheating temperature $T^{max}_{re}$ also leads to a maximum values of scalar spectral index $n^{max}_s$ and inflationary e-folding number $N^{max}_{cmb}$ in association with the observed CMB scale. Based on our general analysis, we have studied four different inflationary models, and discuss their predictions and constraints.

Bouncing cosmology from warped extra dimensional scenario

From the perspective of four dimensional effective theory on a two brane warped geometry model, we examine the possibility of "bouncing phenomena"on our visible brane. Our results reveal that the presence of warped extra dimension lead to a non-singular bounce on the brane scale factor and hence can remove the "big-bang singularity". We also examine the possible parametric regions for which this bouncing is possible.

Constraining scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Inflation by Reheating, Unitarity and PLANCK

We revisit the inflationary dynamics in detail for theories with Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to scalar functions, in light of the Planck data. Considering the chaotic inflationary scenario, we constrain the parameters of two models involving inflaton-Gauss-Bonnet coupling by current Planck data. For non zero inflaton-Gauss-Bonnet coupling $β$, an inflationary analysis provides us a big cosmologically viable region in the space of $(m,β)$, where $m$ is the mass of inflaton. However, we study further on constraining $β$ arising from reheating considerations and unitarity of tree-level amplitude involving we have studied the constraints on $β$ arising from reheating considerations and unitarity of tree level amplitude involving $2$ graviton $\rightarrow 2$ graviton ($h h\rightarrow hh$) scattering. Our analysis, particularly on reheating significantly reduces the parameter space of $(m,β)$ for all models. he quadratic Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter turns out to be more strongly constrained than that of the linear coupling. For the linear Gauss-Bonnet coupling function, we obtain $β\lesssim 10^3$, with the condition $β(m/M_P)^2 \simeq 10^{-4}$. However, study of the Higgs inflation scenario in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet term turned out to be strongly disfavored.

Boson Stars in Higher Derivative Gravity

In this paper, we have constructed Boson star (BS) solutions in four dimensional scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (sGB) theory. In order to have non-trivial effect from Gauss-Bonnet term, we invoked non-minimal coupling between a complex scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet term with a coupling parameter, $α$. We show that the scalar field can no longer take arbitrary value at the center of the star. Furthermore, boson-stars in our higher derivative theory turn out to be slightly massive but much more compact than those in the usual Einstein's gravity. Interestingly, we found that for $α<-0.4$ and $α>0.8$, binding energy for all possible boson stars is always negative. This implies that these stars are intrinsically stable against the decay by dispersion. We also present the mass-radius and mass-frequency curves for boson-star and compare them with other compact objects in gravity models derived from Gauss-Bonnet term.

Minimal Higgs inflation

In this paper we propose two simple minimal Higgs inflation scenarios through a simple modification of the Higgs potential, as opposed to the usual non-minimal Higgs-gravity coupling prescription. The modification is done in such a way that it creates a flat plateau for a huge range of field values at the inflationary energy scale $μ\simeq (λ)^{1/4} α$. Assuming the perturbative Higgs quartic coupling, $λ\simeq {\cal O}(1)$, for both the models inflation energy scale turned out to be $μ\simeq (10^{14}, 10^{15})$ GeV, and prediction of all the cosmologically relevant quantities, $(n_s,r,dn_s^k)$, fit extremely well with observations made by PLANCK. Considering observed central value of the scalar spectral index, $n_s= 0.968$, our two models predict efolding number, $N = (52,47)$. Within a wide range of viable parameter space, we found that the prediction of tensor to scalar ratio $r (\leq 10^{-5})$ is far below the current experimental sensitivity to be observed in the near future. The prediction for the running of scalar spectral index, $dn_s^k$, approximately remains the same as was predicted by the usual chaotic and quartic inflation scenario. We also the computed the background field dependent unitarity scale $Λ(h)$, which turned out to be much larger than the aforementioned inflationary energy.

Pre-heating in the framework of massive gravity

In this paper we propose a mechanism of natural preheating of our universe by introducing an inflaton field dependent mass term for the gravitational wave for a specific class of massive gravity theory. For any single field inflationary model, the inflaton must go through the oscillatory phase after the end of inflation. As has recently been pointed out, if the gravitational fluctuation has inflaton dependent mass term, there will be a resonant amplification of the amplitude of the gravitational wave during the oscillatory phase of inflaton. Because of this large enhancement of the amplitude of the gravitational wave due to parametric resonance, we show that universe can naturally go through the pre-reheated phase with minimally coupled matter field. Therefore, during the reheating phase, there is no need to introduce any arbitrary coupling between the matter field and the inflaton .

Engineering Holographic Superconductor Phase Diagrams

We study how to engineer holographic models with features of a high temperature superconductor phase diagram. We introduce a field in the bulk which provides a tunable "doping" parameter in the boundary theory. By designing how this field changes the effective masses of other order parameter fields, desired phase diagrams can be engineered. We give examples of generating phase diagrams with phase boundaries similar to a superconducting dome and an anti-ferromagnetic phase by including two order parameter fields. We also explore whether the pseudo gap phase can be described without adding another order parameter field and discuss the potential scaling symmetry associated with a quantum critical point hidden under the superconducting dome in this phase diagram.
