Lorentz-preserving fields in Lorentz-violating theories

We identify a fairly general class of field configurations (of spins 0, 1/2 and 1) which preserve Lorentz invariance in effective field theories of Lorentz violation characterized by a constant timelike vector. These fields concomitantly satisfy the equations of motion yielding cubic dispersion relations similar to those found earlier. They appear to have prospective applications in inflationary scenarios.

Masking singularities with $k-$essence fields in an emergent gravity metric

It is known that dynamical solutions of the $k$-essence equation of motion change the metric for the perturbations around these solutions and the perturbations propagate in an emergent spacetime with metric $\tilde G^{μν}$ different from the gravitational metric $g^{μν}$. We show that for observers travelling with the perturbations, there exist homogeneous field configurations for the lagrangian $L=[{1\over 2}g^{μν}\nabla_μϕ\nabla_νϕ]^{2}$ for which a singularity in the gravitational metric $g^{μν}$ can be masked or hidden for such observers. This is shown for the Schwarzschild and the Reissner-Nordstrom metrics.

Hawking temperature for a global monopole metric in the context of k- essence and emergent gravity

The Hawking temperature for the Barriola-Vilenkin global monopole metric is shown to be $T_{\mathrm BV}= {\hbar (1-α) ^{2}\over8πGM k_{\mathrm B}}$, where $α$ is the global monopole charge,$M$ the mass of the black hole, $k_{\mathrm B}$ is the Boltzmann constant and speed of light $c=1$. We then show that a similar metric can also be obtained for certain $k-$ essence field configurations in an emergent gravity situation. Therefore, in the context of Belgiorno {\it et al's} recent demonstration of spontaneous emission of photons in a gravitational analogue experiment, any future observation of $T_{\mathrm BV}$ need not necessarily imply the existence of global monopoles. An alternative implication might as well be a very indirect signature of dark energy in an emergent gravity scenario. This should lead to effects that may be detectable in refined and modified versions of Belgiorno {\it et al's} experiment.

On A Cosmological Invariant as an Observational Probe in the Early Universe

k-essence scalar field models are usually taken to have lagrangians of the form ${\mathcal L}=-V(ϕ)F(X)$ with $F$ some general function of $X=\nabla_μϕ\nabla^μϕ$. Under certain conditions this lagrangian in the context of the early universe can take the form of that of an oscillator with time dependent frequency. The Ermakov invariant for a time dependent oscillator in a cosmological scenario then leads to an invariant quadratic form involving the Hubble parameter and the logarithm of the scale factor. In principle, this invariant can lead to further observational probes for the early universe. Moreover, if such an invariant can be observationally verified then the presence of dark energy will also be indirectly confirmed.

Estimating Temperature Fluctuations in the Early Universe

A lagrangian for the $k-$ essence field is constructed for a constant scalar potential and its form determined when the scale factor was very small compared to the present epoch but very large compared to the inflationary epoch. This means that one is already in an expanding and flat universe. The form is similar to that of an oscillator with time-dependent frequency. Expansion is naturally built into the theory with the existence of growing classical solutions of the scale factor. The formalism allows one to estimate fluctuations of the temperature of the background radiation in these early stages (compared to the present epoch) of the universe. If the temperature at time $t_{a}$ is $T_{a}$ and at time $t_{b}$ the temperature is $T_{b}$ ($t_{b}>t_{a}$), then for small times, the probability for the logarithm of inverse temperature evolution can be estimated to be given by $$P(b,a)= |\langle ln~({1\over T_{b}}),t_{b}| ln~({1\over T_{a}}),t_{a}\rangle|^{2}$$ $$\approx\biggl({3m_{\mathrm Pl}^{2}\over π^{2} (t_{b}-t_{a})^{3}}\biggr) (ln~ T_{a})^{2}(ln~T_{b})^{2}\biggl(1 - 3γ(t_{a} + t_{b})\biggr)$$ where $0<γ<1$, $m_{\mathrm Pl}$ is the Planck mass and Planck's constant and the speed of light has been put equal to unity. There is the further possibility that a single scalar field may suffice for an inflationary scenario as well as the dark matter and dark energy realms.

Logarithm of the scale factor as a generalised coordinate in a lagrangian for dark matter and dark energy

A lagrangian for the $k-$ essence field is set up with canonical kinetic terms and incorporating the scaling relation of [1]. There are two degrees of freedom, {\it viz.},$q(t)= ln\enskip a(t)$ ($a(t)$ is the scale factor) and the scalar field $ϕ$, and an interaction term involving $ϕ$ and $q(t)$.The Euler-Lagrange equations are solved for $q$ and $ϕ$. Using these solutions quantities of cosmological interest are determined. The energy density $ρ$ has a constant component which we identify as dark energy and a component behaving as $a^{-3}$ which we call dark matter. The pressure $p$ is {\it negative} for time $t\to \infty$ and the sound velocity $c_{s}^{2}={\partial p\over\partialρ} << 1$. When dark energy dominates, the deceleration parameter $Q\to -1$ while in the matter dominated era $Q\sim {1\over 2}$. The equation of state parameter $w={p\over ρ}$ is shown to be consistent with $w={p\overρ}\sim -1$ for dark energy domination and during the matter dominated era we have $w\sim 0$. Bounds for the parameters of the theory are estimated from observational data. Keywords: k-essence models, dark matter, dark energy PACS No: 98.80.-k

The CNOT Quantum Logic Gate Using q-Deformed Oscillators

It is shown that the two qubit CNOT (controlled NOT) gate can also be realised using q-deformed angular momentum states via the Jordan-Schwinger mechanism. Thus all the three gates necessary for universality i.e. Hadamard, Phase Shift and the two qubit CNOT gate are realisable with q-deformed oscillators.

Spacetime Dependent Lagrangians and Electrogravity Duality

We apply the spacetime dependent lagrangian formalism [1] to the action in general relativity. We obtain a Barriola-Vilenkin type monopole solution by exploiting theelectrogravity duality of the vacuum Einstein equations and using a modified definition of empty space. An {\it upper bound} is obtained on the monopole mass ${\tt M}$, ${\tt M}\leq e^{(1-α)/α}/(1-α)^{2}{\tt G}$ where $α= 2k $ is the global monopole charge. Vacuum Expectation Value of the Higgs Field and Dyon Charge Quantisation from Spacetime Dependent Lagrangians

The spacetime dependent lagrangian formalism of references [1-2] is used to obtain is used to obtain a classical solution of Yang-Mills theory. This is then used to obtain an estimate of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field,{\it viz.} $ϕ_{a}=A/e$, where $A$ is a constant and $e$ is the Yang-Mills coupling (related to the usual electric charge). The solution can also accommodate non-commuting coordinates on the boundary of the theory which may be used to construct $D$-brane actions. The formalism is also used to obtain the Deser-Gomberoff-Henneaux-Teitelboim results [10] for dyon charge quantisation in abelian $p$-form theories in dimensions $D=2(p+1)$ for both even and odd $p$. Spacetime Dependent Lagrangians and Weak-Strong Duality : Sine Gordon and Massive Thirring Models

The formalism of spacetime dependent lagrangians developed in Ref.1 is applied to the Sine Gordon and massive Thirring models. It is shown that the well-known equivalence of these models (in the context of weak-strong duality) can be understood in this approach from the same considerations as described in [1] for electromagnetic duality. A further new result is that all these can be naturally linked to the fact that the holographic principle has analogues at length scales much larger than quantum gravity. There is also the possibility of {\it noncommuting coodinates} residing on the boundaries. PACS: 11.15.-q: 11.10/Ef

Duality In Equations of Motion from Spacetime Dependent Lagrangians

Starting from lagrangian field theory and the variational principle, we show that duality in equations of motion can also be obtained by introducing explicit spacetime dependence of the lagrangian. Poincare invariance is achieved precisely when the duality conditions are satisfied in a particular way. The same analysis and criteria are valid for both abelian and nonabelian dualities. We illustrate how (1)Dirac string solution (2)Dirac quantisation condition (3)t'Hooft-Polyakov monopole solutions and (4)a procedure emerges for obtaining {\it new} classical solutions of Yang-Mills (Y-M) theory. Moreover, these results occur in a way that is strongly reminiscent of the {\it holographic principle}.

Duality Invariance of Cosmological Solutions with Torsion

We show that for a string moving in a background consisting of maximally symmetric gravity, dilaton field and second rank antisymmetric tensor field, the $O(d) \otimes O(d)$ transformation on the vacuum solutions gives inequivalent solutions that are not maximally symmetric. We then show that the usual physical meaning of maximal symmetry can be made to remain unaltered even if torsion is present and illustrate this through two toy models by determining the torsion fields, the metric and Killing vectors. Finally we show that under the $O(d) \otimes O(d)$ transformation this generalised maximal symmetry can be preserved under certain conditions. This is interesting in the context of string related cosmological backgrounds.

Van der Waerden's Colouring Theorem and Weak-Strong Duality on the Lattice

Van der Waerden's (VDW) colouring theorem in combinatoric number theory [1] has scope for physical applications. The solution of the two colour case has enabled the construction of an explicit mapping of an infinite, one dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising system to an effective pseudo- ferromagnetic one with the coupling constants in the two cases becoming related [2].Here the three colour problem is solved and the results are used to obtain new insights in the theory of complex lattices, particularly those relating to ternary alloys. The existence of these mappings of a multicolour lattice onto a monochromatic one with different couplings illustrates {\it a new form of duality}.
