Bayesian Inference of a Dependent Competing Risk Data

Analysis of competing risks data plays an important role in the lifetime data analysis. Recently Feizjavadian and Hashemi (Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, vol. 82, 19-34, 2015) provided a classical inference of a competing risks data set using four-parameter Marshall-Olkin bivariate Weibull distribution when the failure of an unit at a particular time point can happen due to more than one cause. The aim of this paper is to provide the Bayesian analysis of the same model based on a very flexible Gamma-Dirichlet prior on the scale parameters. It is observed that the Bayesian inference has certain advantages over the classical inference in this case. We provide the Bayes estimates of the unknown parameters and the associated highest posterior density credible intervals based on Gibbs sampling technique. We further consider the Bayesian inference of the model parameters assuming partially ordered Gamma-Dirichlet prior on the scale parameters when one cause is more severe than the other cause. We have extended the results for different censoring schemes also.

Order Restricted Bayesian Analysis of a Simple Step Stress Model

In this article we consider a simple step stress set up under the cumulative exposure model assumption. At each stress level the lifetime distribution of the experimental units are assumed to follow the generalized exponential distribution. We provide the order restricted Bayesian inference of the model parameters by considering the fact that the expected lifetime of the experimental units are larger in lower stress level. Analysis and the related results are extended to different censoring schemes also. The Bayes estimates and the associated credible intervals of the unknown parameters are constructed using importance sampling technique. We perform extensive simulation experiments both for the complete and censored samples to see the performances of the proposed estimators. We analyze two simulated and one real data sets for illustrative purposes. An optimal value of the stress changing time is obtained by minimizing the total posterior coefficient of variations of the unknown parameters.

A scaling theory of quantum breakdown in solids

We propose a new scaling theory for general quantum breakdown phenomena. We show, taking Landau-Zener type breakdown as a particular example, that the breakdown phenomena can be viewed as a quantum phase transition for which the scaling theory is developed. The application of this new scaling theory to Zener type breakdown in Anderson insulators, and quantum quenching has been discussed.

Fractal Models of Earthquake Dynamics

Our understanding of earthquakes is based on the theory of plate tectonics. Earthquake dynamics is the study of the interactions of plates (solid disjoint parts of the lithosphere) which produce seismic activity. Over the last about fifty years many models have come up which try to simulate seismic activity by mimicking plate plate interactions. The validity of a given model is subject to the compliance of the synthetic seismic activity it produces to the well known empirical laws which describe the statistical features of observed seismic activity. Here we present a review of two such models of earthquake dynamics with main focus on a relatively new model namely The Two Fractal Overlap Model.

Classical and quantum breakdown in disordered materials

We have discussed the classical failure of the fuse system, the dielectric breakdown and the quantum breakdown in the Anderson insulators. We have discussed how the extreme value statistics and the resulting Gumbel distribution arises in breakdown and failure processes, especially when the disorder concentration is low. At high concentration of disorder near the percolation threshold, we have discussed how the cross-over might take place from extreme value to percolation statistics. We have discussed the system size dependence that arises at the distribution of the failure current at low disordered regime. Finally, the extension of Zener breakdown phenomenon for band insulators to the disordered-induced Anderson insulators has been discussed.
