Quantum symmetries and quantum isometries of compact metric spaces

We prove that a compact quantum group with faithful Haar state which has a faithful action on a compact space must be a Kac algebra, with bounded antipode and the square of the antipode being identity. The main tool in proving this is the theory of ergodic quantum group action on $C^*$ algebras. Using the above fact, we also formulate a definition of isometric action of a compact quantum group on a compact metric space, generalizing the definition given by Banica for finite metric spaces, and prove for certain special class of metric spaces the existence of the universal object in the category of those compact quantum groups which act isometrically and are `bigger' than the classical isometry group.

Quantum Isometry groups of the Podles Spheres

For $μ\in (0,1), c> 0,$ we identify the quantum group $SO_μ(3)$ as the universal object in the category of compact quantum groups acting by `orientation and volume preserving isometries' in the sense of \cite{goswami2} on the natural spectral triple on the Podles sphere $S^2_{μ, c}$ constructed by Dabrowski, D'Andrea, Landi and Wagner in \cite{Dabrowski_et_al}.

Quantum Isometry Group for Spectral Triples with Real Structure

Given a spectral triple of compact type with a real structure in the sense of [Dabrowski L., J. Geom. Phys. 56 (2006), 86-107] (which is a modification of Connes' original definition to accommodate examples coming from quantum group theory) and references therein, we prove that there is always a universal object in the category of compact quantum group acting by orientation preserving isometries (in the sense of [Bhowmick J., Goswami D., J. Funct. Anal. 257 (2009), 2530-2572]) and also preserving the real structure of the spectral triple. This gives a natural definition of quantum isometry group in the context of real spectral triples without fixing a choice of 'volume form' as in [Bhowmick J., Goswami D., J. Funct. Anal. 257 (2009), 2530-2572].

Some counterexamples in the theory of quantum isometry groups

By considering spectral triples on $S^{2}_{μ, c}$ ($c>0$) constructed by Chakraborty and Pal (\cite{chak_pal}), we show that in general the quantum group of volume and orientation preserving isometries (in the sense of \cite{goswami2}) for a spectral triple of compact type may not have a $C^*$-action, and moreover, it can fail to be a matrix quantum group. It is also proved that the category with objects consisting of those volume and orientation preserving quantum isometries which induce $C^*$-action on the $C^*$ algebra underlying the given spectral triple, may not have a universal object.

Quantum symmetries of classical spaces

We give a general scheme for constructing faithful actions of genuine (noncommutative as $C^*$ algebra) compact quantum groups on classical topological spaces. Using this, we show that: (i) a compact connected classical space can have a faithful action by a genuine compact quantum group, and (ii) there exists a spectral triple on a classical connected compact space for which the quantum group of orientation and volume preserving isometries (in the sense of \cite{qorient}) is a genuine quantum group.

Quantum isometries and noncommutative spheres

We introduce and study two new examples of noncommutative spheres: the half-liberated sphere, and the free sphere. Together with the usual sphere, these two spheres have the property that the corresponding quantum isometry group is "easy", in the representation theory sense. We present as well some general comments on the axiomatization problem, and on the "untwisted" and "non-easy" case.

Quantum Isometry Groups: Examples and Computations

In this follow-up of the article: Quantum Group of Isometries in Classical and Noncommutative Geometry(arXiv:0704.0041) by Goswami, where quantum isometry group of a noncommutative manifold has been defined, we explicitly compute such quantum groups for a number of classical as well as noncommutative manifolds including the spheres and the tori. It is also proved that the quantum isometry group of an isospectral deformation of a (classical or noncommutative) manifold is a suitable deformation of the quantum isometry group of the original (undeformed) manifold.

Quantum Isometry Groups of 0- Dimensional Manifolds

Quantum isometry groups of spectral triples associated with approximately finite-dimensional C*-algebras are shown to arise as inductive limits of quantum symmetry groups of corresponding truncated Bratteli diagrams. This is used to determine explicitly the quantum isometry group of the natural spectral triple on the algebra of continuous functions on the middlethird Cantor set. It is also shown that the quantum symmetry groups of finite graphs or metric spaces coincide with the quantum isometry groups of the corresponding classical objects equipped with natural Laplacians.

Quantum Group of Orientation preserving Riemannian Isometries

We formulate a quantum group analogue of the group of orinetation-preserving Riemannian isometries of a compact Riemannian spin manifold, more generally, of a (possibly $R$-twisted in the sense of a paper of one of the authors, and of compact type) spectral triple. The main advantage of this formulation, which is directly in terms of the Dirac operator, is that it does not need the existence of any `good ' Laplacian as in our previous works on quantum isometry groups. Several interesting examples, including those coming from Rieffel-type deformation as well as the equivariant spectral triples on $SU_μ(2)$ and $S^2_{μ0}$ are dicussed.

Some remarks on the action of Quantum Isometry Groups

We give a new sufficient condition on a spectral triple to ensure that the quantum group of orientation and volume preserving isometries defined in \cite{qorient} has a $C^*$-action on the underlying $C^*$ algebra.

Local Equivalence of Rank-Two Quantum Mixed States

We investigate the equivalence of quantum mixed states under local unitary transformations. For a class of rank-two mixed states, a sufficient and necessary condition of local equivalence is obtained by giving a complete set of invariants under local unitary transformations, such that two states in this class are locally equivalent if and only if all these invariants have equal values for them.

Quantum Group of Isometries in Classical and Noncommutative Geometry

We formulate a quantum generalization of the notion of the group of Riemannian isometries for a compact Riemannian manifold, by introducing a natural notion of smooth and isometric action by a compact quantum group on a classical or noncommutative manifold described by spectral triples, and then proving the existence of a universal object (called the quantum isometry group) in the category of compact quantum groups acting smoothly and isometrically on a given (possibly noncommutative) manifold satisfying certain regularity assumptions. In fact, we identify the quantum isometry group with the universal object in a bigger category, namely the category of `quantum families of smooth isometries', defined along the line of Woronowicz and Soltan. We also construct a spectral triple on the Hilbert space of forms on a noncommutative manifold which is equivariant with respect to a natural unitary representation of the quantum isometry group. We give explicit description of quantum isometry groups of commutative and noncommutative tori, and in this context, obtain the quantum double torus defined in \cite{hajac} as the universal quantum group of holomorphic isometries of the noncommutative torus.

On Equivariant Embedding of Hilbert C^* modules

We prove that an arbitrary (not necessarily countably generated) Hilbert $G$-$\cla$ module on a G-C^* algebra $\cla$ admits an equivariant embedding into a trivial $G-\cla$ module, provided G is a compact Lie group and its action on $\cla$ is ergodic.

Quantum random walks and vanishing of the second Hochschild cohomology

Given a conditionally completely positive map $\mathcal L$ on a unital $\ast$-algebra $\A$, we find an interesting connection between the second Hochschild cohomology of $\A$ with coefficients in the bimodule $E_{\mathcal L}=\B^a(\A \oplus M)$ of adjointable maps, where $M$ is the GNS bimodule of $\mathcal L$, and the possibility of constructing a quantum random walk (in the sense of \cite{AP,LP,L,KBS}) corresponding to $\mathcal L$.

Invariance and the twisted Chern character : a case study

We give details of the proof of the remark made in \cite{G2} that the Chern characters of the canonical generators on the K homology of the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ are not invariant under the natural $SU_q(2)$ coaction. Furthermore, the conjecture made in \cite{G2} about the nontriviality of the twisted Chern character coming from an odd equivariant spectral triple on $SU_q(2)$ is settled in the affirmative.

Local Invariants for a Class of Mixed States

We investigate the equivalence of quantum states under local unitary transformations. A complete set of invariants under local unitary transformations is presented for a class of mixed states. It is shown that two states in this class are locally equivalent if and only if all these invariants have equal values for them.

A Complete Formulation of Baum-Conens' Conjecture for the Action of Discrete Quantum Groups

We formulate a version of Baum-Connes' conjecture for a discrete quantum group, building on our earlier work (\cite{GK}). Given such a quantum group $\cla$, we construct a directed family $\{\cle_F \}$ of $C^*$-algebras ($F$ varying over some suitable index set), borrowing the ideas of \cite{cuntz}, such that there is a natural action of $\cla$ on each $\cle_F$ satisfying the assumptions of \cite{GK}, which makes it possible to define the "analytical assembly map", say $μ^{r,F}_i$, $i=0,1,$ as in \cite{GK}, from the $\cla$-equivariant $K$-homolgy groups of $\cle_F$ to the $K$-theory groups of the "reduced" dual $\hat{\cla_r}$ (c.f. \cite{GK} and the references therein for more details). As a result, we can define the Baum-Connes' maps $μ^r_i : \stackrel{\rm lim}{\longrightarrow} KK_i^\cla(\cle_F,\IC) \raro K_i(\hat{\cla_r}),$ and in the classical case, i.e. when $\cla$ is $C_0(G)$ for a discrete group, the isomorphism of the above maps for $i=0,1$ is equivalent to the Baum-Connes' conjecture. Furthermore, we verify its truth for an arbitrary finite dimensional quantum group and obtain partial results for the dual of $SU_q(2).$
