Observable Lepton Number Violation with Predominantly Dirac Nature of Active Neutrinos

We study a specific version of $SU(2)_R \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L}$ models extended by discrete symmetries where the new physics sector responsible for tiny neutrino masses at leading order remains decoupled from the new physics sector that can give rise to observable signatures of lepton number violation such as neutrinoless double beta decay. More specifically, the dominant contribution to light neutrino masses comes from a one-loop Dirac mass. At higher loop level, a tiny Majorana mass also appears which remains suppressed by many order of magnitudes in comparison to the Dirac mass. Such a model where the active neutrinos are predominantly of Dirac type, also predicts observable charged lepton flavour violation like $μ\rightarrow 3e, μ\rightarrow e γ$ and multi-component dark matter.

Common Origin of Neutrino Mass, Dark Matter and Dirac Leptogenesis

We study the possibility of generating tiny Dirac neutrino masses at one loop level through the \textit{scotogenic} mechanism such that one of the particles going inside the loop can be a stable cold dark matter (DM) candidate. Majorana mass terms of singlet fermions as well as tree level Dirac neutrino masses are prevented by incorporating the presence of additional discrete symmetries in a minimal fashion, which also guarantee the stability of the dark matter candidate. Due to the absence of total lepton number violation, the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated through the mechanism of Dirac leptogenesis where an equal and opposite amount of leptonic asymmetry is generated in the left and right handed sectors which are prevented from equilibration due to tiny Dirac Yukawa couplings. Dark matter relic abundance is generated through its usual freeze-out at a temperature much below the scale of leptogenesis. We constrain the relevant parameter space from neutrino mass, baryon asymmetry, Planck bound on dark matter relic abundance, and latest LUX bound on spin independent DM-nucleon scattering cross section. We also discuss the charged lepton flavour violation $(μ\rightarrow e γ)$ and electric dipole moment of electron in this model in the light of the latest experimental data and constrain the parameter space of the model.

Analysis of four-zero textures in $3+1$ framework

The presence of a zero texture in the neutrino mass matrix can indicate the presence of an underlying symmetry which can generate neutrino mass and mixing. In this paper, for the first time we study the four-zero textures of the low energy neutrino mass matrix in the presence of an extra light-sterile neutrino i.e., the 3+1 neutrino scheme. In our analysis we find that out of the 210 possible four-zero textures only 15 textures are allowed. We divide the allowed four-zero textures into two classes -- class $A$ in which the value of mass matrix element $M_{ee}$ is zero and class $B$ in which $M_{ee}$ is non-zero. In this way we obtain ten possible four-zero textures in class $A$ and five possible four-zero textures in class $B$. In our analysis we find that, for normal hierarchy the allowed number of textures in class $A$ ($B$) is nine (three). For the case of inverted hierarchy we find that, two textures in class $A$ are disallowed and these textures are different from the disallowed textures for normal hierarchy in class $A$. However, we find that all the five textures in class $B$ are allowed for the inverted hierarchy. Based on analytic expressions for the elements $M_{αβ}$, we discuss the reasons for certain textures being disallowed. We also discuss the correlations between the different parameters of the allowed textures. Finally, we present the implications of our study on experimental searches for neutrinoless double beta decay.

Light Sterile Neutrino and Dark Matter in Left-Right Symmetric Models Without Higgs Bidoublet

We present a class of left-right symmetric models where Dirac as well as Majorana mass terms of neutrinos can arise at one-loop level in a scotogenic fashion: with dark matter particles going inside the loop. We show the possibility of naturally light right handed neutrinos that can have interesting implications at neutrinoless double beta decay experiments as well as cosmology. Apart from a stable dark matter candidate stabilised by a remnant $Z_2$ symmetry, one can also have a long lived keV sterile neutrino dark matter in these models. This class of models can have very different collider signatures compared to the conventional left-right models.

Charged Lepton Flavour Violation and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in Left-Right Symmetric Models with Type I+II Seesaw

We study the new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) half-life and lepton flavour violation (LFV) amplitude within the framework of the minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRSM). Considering all possible new physics contributions to $0νββ$ and charged lepton flavour violation $μ\rightarrow e γ, μ\rightarrow 3e$ in MLRSM, we constrain the parameter space of the model from the requirement of satisfying existing experimental bounds. Assuming the breaking scale of the left-right symmetry to be $\mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV accessible at ongoing and near future collider experiments, we consider the most general type I+II seesaw mechanism for the origin of tiny neutrino masses. Choosing the relative contribution of the type II seesaw term allows us to calculate the right handed neutrino mass matrix as well as Dirac neutrino mass matrix as a function of the model parameters, required for the calculation of $0νββ$ and LFV amplitudes. We show that such a general type I+II seesaw structure results in more allowed parameter space compared to individual type I or type II seesaw cases considered in earlier works. In particular, we show that the doubly charged scalar masses $M_Δ$ are allowed to be smaller than the heaviest right handed neutrino mass $M_N$ from the present experimental bounds in these scenarios which is in contrast to earlier results with individual type I or type II seesaw showing $M_Δ > M_N$.

Subdominant Left-Right Scalar Dark Matter as Origin of the 750 GeV Di-photon Excess at LHC

We study the possibility of explaining the recently reported 750 GeV di-photon excess at LHC within the framework of a left-right symmetric model. The 750 GeV neutral scalar in the model is dominantly an admixture of neutral components of scalar bidoublets with a tiny fraction of neutral scalar triplet. Incorporating $SU(2)$ septuplet scalar pairs into the model, we enhance the partial decay width of the 750 GeV neutral scalar into di-photons through charged septuplet components in loop while keeping the neutral septuplet components as subdominant dark matter candidates. The model also predicts the decay width of the 750 GeV scalar to be around 36 GeV to be either confirmed or ruled out by future LHC data. The requirement of producing the correct di-photon signal automatically keeps the septuplet dark matter abundance subdominant in agreement with bounds from direct and indirect detection experiments. We then briefly discuss different possibilities to account for the remaining dark matter component of the Universe in terms of other particle candidates whose stability arise either due to remnant discrete symmetry after spontaneous breaking of $U(1)_{B-L}$ or due to high $SU(2)$-dimension forbidding their decay into lighter particles.

New U(1) Gauge Model of Radiative Lepton Masses with Sterile Neutrino and Dark Matter

An anomaly-free U(1) gauge extension of the standard model (SM) is presented. Only one Higgs doublet with a nonzero vacuum expectation is required as in the SM. New fermions and scalars as well as all SM particles transform nontrivially under this U(1), resulting in a model of three active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino, all acquiring radiative masses. Charged-lepton masses are also radiative as well as the mixing between active and sterile neutrinos. At the same time, a residual $Z_2$ symmetry of the U(1) gauge symmetry remains exact, allowing for the existence of dark matter.

Minimal Left-Right Symmetry Confronted with the 750 GeV Di-photon Excess at LHC

The recent results of 13 TeV ATLAS and CMS di-photon searches show an excess at di-photon invariant mass of 750 GeV. We look for possible explanation of this within minimal left right symmetric model (MLRSM). The possible candidate is a neutral Higgs of mass 750 GeV that can decay to di-photon via charged Higgs and right handed gauge boson loop. However, the cross-section is not consistent with the ATLAS and CMS results. We then discuss one possible variation of this model with universal seesaw for fermion masses that can explain this excess.

Relating Lepton Mixing Angles with Lepton Mass Hierarchy

We revisit the possibility of relating lepton mixing angles with lepton mass hierarchies in a model-independent way. Guided by the existence of such relations in the quark sector, we first consider all the mixing angles, both in charged lepton and neutrino sectors to be related to the respective mass ratios. This allows us to calculate the leptonic mixing angles observed in neutrino oscillations as functions of the lightest neutrino mass. We show that for both normal and inverted hierarchical neutrino masses, this scenario does not give rise to correct leptonic mixing angles. We then show that correct leptonic mixing angles can be generated with normal hierarchical neutrino masses if the relation between mixing angle and mass ratio is restricted to 1-2 and 1-3 mixing in both charged lepton and neutrino sectors leaving the 2-3 mixing angles as free parameters. We then restrict the lightest neutrino mass as well as the difference between 2-3 mixing angles in charged lepton and neutrino sectors from the requirement of producing correct leptonic mixing angles. We constrain the lightest neutrino mass to be around $0.002$ eV and leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ such that $\sin^2{δ_{CP}}\sim(0.35-0.50)$. We also construct the leptonic mass matrices in terms of $2-3$ mixing angles and lightest neutrino mass and briefly comment on the possibility of realizing texture zeros in the neutrino mass matrix.

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in Type I+II Seesaw Models

We study neutrinoless double beta decay in left-right symmetric extension of the standard model with type I and type II seesaw origin of neutrino masses. Due to the enhanced gauge symmetry as well as extended scalar sector, there are several new physics sources of neutrinoless double beta decay in this model. Ignoring the left-right gauge boson mixing and heavy-light neutrino mixing, we first compute the contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay for type I and type II dominant seesaw separately and compare with the standard light neutrino contributions. We then repeat the exercise by considering the presence of both type I and type II seesaw, having non-negligible contributions to light neutrino masses and show the difference in results from individual seesaw cases. Assuming the new gauge bosons and scalars to be around a TeV, we constrain different parameters of the model including both heavy and light neutrino masses from the requirement of keeping the new physics contribution to neutrinoless double beta decay amplitude below the upper limit set by the GERDA experiment and also satisfying bounds from lepton flavor violation, cosmology and colliders.

Common Origin of 3.55 keV X-Ray Line and Galactic Center Gamma Ray Excess in a Radiative Neutrino Mass Model

We attempt to simultaneously explain the recently observed 3.55 keV X-ray line in the analysis of XMM-Newton telescope data and the galactic center gamma ray excess observed by the Fermi gamma ray space telescope within an abelian gauge extension of standard model. We consider a two component dark matter scenario with tree level mass difference 3.55 keV such that the heavier one can decay into the lighter one and a photon with energy 3.55 keV. The lighter dark matter candidate is protected from decaying into the standard model particles by a remnant $Z_2$ symmetry into which the abelian gauge symmetry gets spontaneously broken. If the mass of the dark matter particle is chosen to be within $31-40$ GeV, then this model can also explain the galactic center gamma ray excess if the dark matter annihilation into $b\bar{b}$ pairs has a cross section of $\langle σv \rangle \simeq (1.4-2.0) \times 10^{-26} \; \text{cm}^3/\text{s}$. We constrain the model from the requirement of producing correct dark matter relic density, 3.55 keV X-ray line flux and galactic center gamma ray excess. We also impose the bounds coming from dark matter direct detection experiments as well as collider limits on additional gauge boson mass and gauge coupling. We also briefly discuss how this model can give rise to sub-eV neutrino masses at tree level as well as one-loop level while keeping the dark matter mass at few tens of GeV. We also constrain the model parameters from the requirement of keeping the one-loop mass difference between two dark matter particles below a keV. We find that the constraints from light neutrino mass and keV mass splitting between two dark matter components show more preference for opposite $CP$ eigenvalues of the two fermion singlet dark matter candidates in the model

Hybrid Textures of Neutrino Mass Matrix under the Lamppost of Latest Neutrino and Cosmology Data

We study all possible neutrino mass matrices with one zero element and two equal non-zero elements, known as hybrid texture neutrino mass matrices. In the diagonal charged lepton basis, we consider thirty nine such possible cases which are consistent with the latest neutrino data. Using the two constraints on neutrino mass matrix elements imposed by hybrid textures, we numerically evaluate the neutrino parameters like the lightest neutrino mass $m_{\text{lightest}}$, one Dirac CP phase $δ$ and two Majorana CP phases $α, β$ by using the global fit $3σ$ values of three mixing angles and two mass squared differences. We then constrain this parameter space by using the cosmological upper bound on the sum of absolute neutrino masses given by Planck experiment. We also calculate the effective neutrino mass matrix for this region of parameter space which may have relevance in future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. We finally discriminate between these hybrid texture mass matrices from the requirement of producing correct baryon asymmetry through type I seesaw leptogenesis. We also constrain the light neutrino parameter space as well as the lightest right handed neutrino mass from the constraint on baryon asymmetry of the Universe from Planck experiment.

Constraining Type I Seesaw with $A_4$ Flavor Symmetry From Neutrino Data and Leptogenesis

We study a type I seesaw model of neutrino masses within the framework of $A_4$ flavor symmetry. Incorporating the presence of both singlet and triplet flavons under $A_4$ symmetry, we construct the leptonic mass matrices involved in type I seesaw mechanism. We then construct the light neutrino mass matrix using the $3σ$ values of neutrino oscillation parameters keeping the presently undetermined parameters namely, the lightest neutrino mass $m_{\text{lightest}}$, one Dirac CP phase $δ$ and two Majorana phases $α, β$ as free parameters. Comparing the mass matrices derived using $A_4$ parameters as well as light neutrino parameters, we then evaluate all the $A_4$ parameters in terms of light neutrino parameters. Assuming some specific vacuum alignments of $A_4$ triplet flavon field, we then numerically evaluate all the free parameters in the light neutrino sector, using which we also find out the remaining $A_4$ parameters. We then use the numerical values of these parameters to calculate baryon asymmetry through the mechanism of leptogenesis. We not only constrain the $A_4$ vacuum alignments from the requirement of successful leptogenesis, but also constrain the free parameters in the light neutrino sector $(m_{\text{lightest}}, δ, α, β)$ to certain range of values. These values can be tested in ongoing and future neutrino experiments providing a way to discriminate between different possible $A_4$ vacuum alignments discussed in this work.

Discriminating Majorana Neutrino Textures in the light of Baryon Asymmetry

We study all possible texture zeros in the Majorana neutrino mass matrix which are allowed from neutrino oscillation as well as cosmology data when the charged lepton mass matrix is assumed to take the diagonal form. In case of one-zero texture, we write down the Majorana phases which are assumed to be equal and the lightest neutrino mass as a function of the Dirac CP phase. In case of two-zero texture, we numerically evaluate all the three CP phases and lightest neutrino mass by solving four real constraint equations. We then constrain texture zero mass matrices from the requirement of producing correct baryon asymmetry through the mechanism of leptogenesis. Adopting a type I seesaw framework, we consider the CP violating out of equilibrium decay of the lightest right handed neutrino as the source of lepton asymmetry. Apart from discriminating between the texture zero mass matrices and light neutrino mass hierarchy, we also constrain the Dirac and Majorana CP phases so that the observed baryon asymmetry can be produced. In two-zero texture, we further constrain the diagonal form of Dirac neutrino mass matrix from the requirement of producing correct baryon asymmetry.

Corrections to Scaling Neutrino Mixing: Non-zero $θ_{13}, δ_{CP}$ and Baryon Asymmetry

We study a very specific type of neutrino mass and mixing structure based on the idea of Strong Scaling Ansatz (SSA) where the ratios of neutrino mass matrix elements belonging to two different columns are equal. There are three such possibilities, all of which are disfavored by the latest neutrino oscillation data. We focus on the specific scenario which predicts vanishing reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and inverted hierarchy with vanishing lightest neutrino mass. Motivated by several recent attempts to explain non-zero $θ_{13}$ by incorporating corrections to a leading order neutrino mass or mixing matrix giving $θ_{13}=0$, here we study the origin of non-zero $θ_{13}$ as well as leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ by incorporating two different corrections to scaling neutrino mass and mixing: one where type II seesaw acts as a correction to scaling neutrino mass matrix and the other with charged lepton correction to scaling neutrino mixing. Although scaling neutrino mass matrix originating from type I seesaw predicts inverted hierarchy, the total neutrino mass matrix after type II seesaw correction can give rise to either normal or inverted hierarchy. However, charged lepton corrections do not disturb the inverted hierarchy prediction of scaling neutrino mass matrix. We further discriminate between neutrino hierarchies, different choices of lightest neutrino mass and Dirac CP phase by calculating baryon asymmetry and comparing with the observations made by the Planck experiment.

Connecting Leptonic CP Violation, Lightest Neutrino Mass and Baryon Asymmetry Through Type II Seesaw

We study the possibility of connecting leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ$, lightest neutrino mass and baryon asymmetry of the Universe within the framework of a model where both type I and type II seesaw mechanisms contribute to neutrino mass. Type I seesaw gives rise to Tri-Bimaximal (TBM) type neutrino mixing whereas type II seesaw acts as a correction in order to generate non-zero $θ_{13}$. We derive the most general form of type II seesaw mass matrix which can not only give rise to correct neutrino mixing angles but also can generate non-trivial value of $δ$. Considering both the cases where type II seesaw is sub-leading and is equally dominant compared to type I seesaw, we correlate the type II seesaw term with $δ$ and lightest neutrino mass. We further constrain the Dirac CP phase $δ$ and hence the type II seesaw mass matrix from the requirement of producing the observed baryon asymmetry through the mechanism of leptogenesis.

Galactic Center Gamma Ray Excess in a Radiative Neutrino Mass Model

The Fermi gamma ray space telescope data have pointed towards an excess of gamma rays with a peak around $1-3$ GeV in the region surrounding the galactic center. This anomalous excess can be described well by a dark matter candidate having mass in the range $31-40$ GeV annihilating into $b\bar{b}$ pairs with a cross section of $< σv > \simeq (1.4-2.0) \times 10^{-26} \; \text{cm}^3/\text{s}$. In this work we explore the possibility of having such a dark matter candidate within the framework of a radiative neutrino mass model. The model is a simple extension of the standard model by an additional $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry where the standard model neutrino masses arise both at tree level as well as radiatively by the anomaly free addition of one singlet fermion $N_R$ and two triplet fermions $Σ_{1R}, Σ_{2R}$ with suitable Higgs scalars. The spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking is achieved in such a way which results in a residual $Z_2$ symmetry and hence providing a stable cold dark matter candidate. We show that the singlet fermionic dark matter candidate in our model can give rise to the galactic center gamma ray excess. The parameter space which simultaneously satisfy the constraints on relic density, direct detection scattering as well as collider bounds essentially corresponds to an s-wave resonance where the gauge boson mass $m_X$ is approximately twice that of dark matter mass $m_χ$. We also discuss the compatibility of such a light fermion singlet dark matter with light neutrino mass.

Common Origin of Active and Sterile Neutrino Masses with Dark Matter

We propose an abelian extension of the Standard Model which can explain the origin of eV scale masses and mixing for active and sterile neutrinos and at the same time providing a natural cold dark matter candidate. One of the three active neutrinos acquires mass at tree level through seesaw mechanism whereas the other two active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino acquire eV scale masses at one-loop level. The model also allows non-trivial mixing between active and sterile neutrinos at one-loop level which could have interesting signatures at neutrino experiments. After the abelian gauge symmetry gets spontaneously broken down to a $Z_2$ symmetry, the lightest $Z_2$ odd particle can naturally give rise to the cold dark matter of the Universe. The phenomenology of both fermionic and scalar dark matter is briefly discussed by incorporating latest experimental constraints.
