Topological Gluon Mass and Shear Viscosity of the Quark--Gluon Plasma

The quark--gluon plasma produced in relativistic heavy--ion collisions behaves as a nearly perfect fluid characterized by an exceptionally small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. Understanding the microscopic origin of this small viscosity remains an important problem in the theory of strongly interacting matter. In this work we investigate the transport properties of a gluonic plasma in a non--Abelian gauge theory in which gluons acquire a gauge--invariant mass through a topological $B\wedge F$ interaction. Integrating out the antisymmetric tensor field generates an effective massive gluon propagator that modifies the infrared behaviour of gluon exchange processes. Using relativistic kinetic theory and the Boltzmann transport equation we compute the shear viscosity of the plasma and derive the corresponding transport cross section for gluon scattering. The presence of the topological gluon mass provides a natural infrared regulator for $t$--channel gluon exchange, removing the divergence that appears in perturbative QCD with massless gluons. We show that when the topological mass scale is comparable to the soft momentum scale of the plasma, $m\sim gT$, the resulting viscosity to entropy density ratio naturally falls in the range inferred from hydrodynamic analyses of heavy--ion collision experiments. These results suggest that topological mass generation may provide a simple microscopic mechanism contributing to the near--perfect fluidity of the quark--gluon plasma.

The Polyakov loop dependence of bulk viscosity of QCD matter

In this work, we show the dependence of bulk viscosity on Polyakov loop in 3+1 dimensional topologically massive model (TMM). This model contains equally massive non-Abelian gauge fields without spontaneous symmetry breaking. In earlier works, the bulk viscosity was found from the trace anomaly in massless $ϕ^4$ model and Yang-Mills (YM) theory and its dependence on the quantum corrections was established. In TMM, the trace anomaly is absent due to the presence of kinetic term of a two-form field $B$ in the action. This model also provides the dependence of bulk viscosity on the mass of the gauge bosons. The mass of the gauge bosons in TMM acts as magnetic mass in the perturbative thermal field theory. This magnetic mass is gauge independent unlike what is found in massless YM theory. The ratio of bulk viscosity and entropy density vs temperature is plotted which shows the required behaviour near critical point. We also observe that the strong coupling constant has the same behaviour at high energy limit (i.e. asymptotic freedom) as that of massless YM theory at zero temperature.

HTL effective action of topologically massive gluons in 3+1 dimensions

We construct an effective action for "soft" gluons by integrating out hard thermal modes of topologically massive vector bosons at one loop order. The loop carrying hard gluons (momentum $\sim T$) are known as hard thermal loop (HTL). The gluons are massive in the non-Abelian topologically massive model (TMM) due to a quadratic coupling $B\wedge F$ where a 2-form field $B$ is coupled quadratically with the field strength $F$ of Yang-Mills (YM) field. The mass of the gluons plays an important role in the perturbative analysis of thermal field theory. Due to the presence of this infrared cut-off in the model, the color diffusion constant and conductivity can be analyzed in perturbative regime.

(3+1)-Dimensional Topologically Massive 2-form Gauge Theory: Geometrical Superfield Approach

We derive the complete set of off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to the combined "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetry transformations for the (3+1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive non-Abelian $(B \wedge F)$ theory with the help of geometrical superfield formalism. For this purpose, we use three horizontality conditions (HCs). The first HC produces the (anti-)BRST transformations for the 1-form gauge field and corresponding (anti-)ghost fields whereas the second HC yields the (anti-)BRST transformations for 2-form field and associated (anti-)ghost fields. The integrability of second HC produces third HC. The latter HC produces the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for the compensating auxiliary vector field and corresponding ghosts. We obtain five (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type conditions which emerge very naturally as the off-shoots of superfield formalism. Out of five CF-type conditions, two are fermionic in nature. These CF-type conditions play a decisive role in providing the absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST transformations and also responsible for the derivation of coupled but equivalent (anti-)BRST invariant Lagrangian densities. Furthermore, we capture the (anti-)BRST invariance of the coupled Lagrangian densities in terms of the superfields and translation generators along the Grassmannian directions $θ$ and $\bar θ$.

$β$-function for topologically massive gluons

We calculate the quantum corrections to the two-point function of four dimensional topologically massive non-Abelian vector fields at one loop order for $SU(N)$ gauge theory in Feynman-'t Hooft gauge. We calculate the beta function of the gauge coupling constant and find that the theory becomes asymptotically free faster than pure $SU(N)$ gauge theory.
