Birkhoff-James orthogonality in complex Banach spaces and Bhatia-Šemrl Theorem revisited

We explore Birkhoff-James orthogonality of two elements in a complex Banach space by using the directional approach. Our investigation illustrates the geometric distinctions between a smooth point and a non-smooth point in a complex Banach space. As a concrete outcome of our study, we obtain a new proof of the Bhatia-Šemrl Theorem on orthogonality of linear operators.

Numerical radius and a notion of smoothness in the space of bounded linear operators

We observe that the classical notion of numerical radius gives rise to a notion of smoothness in the space of bounded linear operators on certain Banach spaces, whenever the numerical radius is a norm. We demonstrate an important class of \emph{real} Banach space $ \mathbb{X} $ for which the numerical radius defines a norm on $ \mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X}), $ the space of all bounded linear operators on $ \mathbb{X} $. We characterize Birkhoff-James orthogonality in the space of bounded linear operators on a finite-dimensional Banach space, endowed with the numerical radius norm. Some examples are also discussed to illustrate the geometric differences between the numerical radius norm and the usual operator norm, from the viewpoint of operator smoothness.

On Best approximations to compact operators

We study best approximations to compact operators between Banach spaces and Hilbert spaces, from the point of view of Birkhoff-James orthogonality and semi-inner-products. As an application of the present study, some distance formulae are presented in the space of compact operators. The special case of bounded linear functionals as compact operators is treated separately and some applications to best approximations in reflexive, strictly convex and smooth Banach spaces are discussed. An explicit example is presented in $ \ell_p^{n} $ spaces, where $ 1 < p < \infty, $ to illustrate the applicability of the methods developed in this article. A comparative analysis of the results presented in this article with the well-known classical duality principle in approximation theory is conducted to demonstrate the advantage in the former case, from a computational point of view.

On best approximations in Banach spaces from the perspective of orthogonality

We study best approximations in Banach spaces via Birkhoff-James orthogonality of functionals. To exhibit the usefulness of Birkhoff-James orthogonality techniques in the study of best approximation problems, some algorithms and distance formulae are presented. As an application of our study, we obtain some crucial inequalities, which also strengthen the classical Hölder's inequality. The relevance of the algorithms and the inequalities are discussed through concrete examples.

On approximate orthogonality and symmetry of operators in semi-Hilbertian structure

The purpose of the article is to generalize the concept of approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality, in the semi-Hilbertian structure. Given a positive operator $ A $ on a Hilbert space $ \mathbb{H}, $ we define $ (ε,A)- $approximate orthogonality and $ (ε,A)- $approximate orthogonality in the sense of Chmieli$\acute{n}$ski and establish a relation between them. We also characterize $ (ε,A)- $approximate orthogonality in the sense of Chmieli$\acute{n}$ski for $A$-bounded and $A$-bounded compact operators. We further generalize the concept of right symmetric and left symmetric operators on a Hilbert space. The utility of these notions are illustrated by extending some of the previous results obtained by various authors in the setting of Hilbert spaces.

Local approximate symmetry of Birkhoff-James orthogonality in normed linear spaces

Two different notions of approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality in nor\-med linear spaces have been introduced by Dragomir and Chmie\-liń\-ski. In the present paper we consider a global and a local approximate symmetry of the Birkhoff-James orthogonality related to each of the two definitions. We prove that the considered orthogonality is approximately symmetric in the sense of Dragomir in all finite-dimensional Banach spaces. For the other case, we prove that for finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces, the approximate symmetry of the orthogonality is equivalent to some newly introduced geometric property. Our investigations complement and extend the scope of some recent results on a global approximate symmetry of the Birkhoff-James orthogonality.

Norm derivatives and geometry of bilinear operators

We study the norm derivatives in the context of Birkhoff-James orthogonality in real Banach spaces. As an application of this, we obtain a complete characterization of the left-symmetric points and the right-symmetric points in a real Banach space in terms of the norm derivatives. We obtain a complete characterization of strong Birkhoff-James orthogonality in $\ell_1^n$ and $\ell_\infty^n$ spaces. We also obtain a complete characterization of the orthogonality relation defined by the norm derivatives in terms of some newly introduced variation of Birkhoff-James orthogonality. We further study Birkhoff-James orthogonality, approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality, smoothness and norm attainment of bounded bilinear operators between Banach spaces.

On the Davis-Wielandt shell of an operator and the Davis-Wielandt index of a normed linear space

We study the Davis-Wielandt shell and the Davis-Wielandt radius of an operator on a normed linear space $\mathcal{X}$. We show that after a suitable modification, the modified Davis-Wielandt radius defines a norm on $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{X})$ which is equivalent to the usual operator norm on $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{X})$. We introduce the Davis-Wielandt index of a normed linear space and compute its value explicitly in case of some particular polyhedral Banach spaces. We also present a general method to estimate the Davis-Wielandt index of any polyhedral Banach space.

Some remarks on orthogonality of bounded linear operators

We explore the relation between the orthogonality of bounded linear operators in the space of operators and that of elements in the ground space. To be precise, we study if $ T, A \in \mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X}, \mathbb{Y}) $ satisfy $ T \bot_B A,$ then whether there exists $ x \in \mathbb{X} $ such that $ Tx\bot_B Ax$ with $ \|x\| =1, \|Tx\| = \|T\|$, where $\mathbb{X}, \mathbb{Y} $ are normed linear spaces. In this context, we introduce the notion of Property $ P_n $ for a Banach space and illustrate its connection with orthogonality of a bounded linear operator between Banach spaces. We further study Property $ P_n $ for various polyhedral Banach spaces.

A study of orthogonality of bounded linear operators

We study Birkhoff-James orthogonality and isosceles orthogonality of bounded linear operators between Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. We explore Birkhoff-James orthogonality of bounded linear operators in light of a new notion introduced by us and also discuss some of the possible applications in this regard. We also study isosceles orthogonality of bounded (positive) linear operators on a Hilbert space and some of the related properties, including that of operators having disjoint support. We further explore the relations between Birkhoff-James orthogonality and isosceles orthogonality in a general Banach space.

On numerical radius and Crawford number attainment sets of a bounded linear operator

We completely characterize the Crawford number attainment set and the numerical radius attainment set of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space. We study the intersection properties of the corresponding attainment sets of numerical radius, Crawford number, norm, minimum norm of a bounded linear operator defined on a normed space. Our study illustrates the similarities and the differences of the extremal properties of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space and a general normed space.

Orthogonality in a vector space with a topology And a generalization of Bhatia-Semrl Theorem

We introduce the notion of orthogonality in a vector space with a topology on it. To serve our purpose, we define orthogonality space for a given vector space X, using the topology on it. We show that for a suitable choice of orthogonality space, Birkhoff-James orthogonality in a Banach space is a particular case of the orthogonality introduced by us. We characterize the right additivity of orthogonality in our setting and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a Banach space to be smooth as a corollary to our characterization. Finally, using our notion of orthogonality, we obtain a topological generalization of the Bhatia-Semrl Theorem.

A study of symmetric points in Banach spaces

We completely characterize the left-symmetric points, the right-symmetric points, and, the symmetric points in the sense of Birkhoff-James, in a Banach space. We obtain a complete characterization of the left-symmetric (right-symmetric) points in the infinity sum of two Banach spaces, in terms of the left-symmetric (right-symmetric) points of the constituent spaces. As an application of this characterization, we explicitly identify the left-symmetric (right-symmetric) points of some well-known three-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces.

Smoothness and norm attainment of bounded bilinear operators between Banach spaces

We study the smoothness and the norm attainment of bounded bilinear operators between Banach spaces, using the concepts of Birkhoff-James orthogonality and semi-inner-products. In the finite-dimensional case, we characterize Birkhoff-James orthogonality of bilinear operators in terms of the norm attainment set. This yields a nice characterization of smoothness of bilinear operators between Banach spaces, in the finite-dimensional case. Without any restriction on the dimension of the space, we obtain a complete characterization of the norm attainment set of a bounded bilinear operator using semi-inner-products, which is particularly useful when the concerned Banach spaces are smooth.

Extreme contractions on finite-dimensional polygonal Banach spaces-II

We introduce the concept of weak L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces, in the study of extreme contractions. We give examples of pairs of Banach spaces (not) satisfying weak L-P property and apply the concept to compute the exact number of extreme contractions between a particular pair of polygonal Banach spaces. We also study the optimality of our results on the newly introduced weak L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces, by considering appropriate examples.

Extreme contractions on finite-dimensional polygonal Banach spaces

We explore extreme contractions between finite-dimensional polygonal Banach spaces, from the point of view of attainment of norm of a linear operator. We prove that if $ X $ is an $ n- $dimensional polygonal Banach space and $ Y $ is any Banach space and $ T \in L(X,Y) $ is an extreme contraction, then $ T $ attains norm at $ n $ linearly independent extreme points of $ B_{X}. $ Moreover, if $ T $ attains norm at $ n $ linearly independent extreme points $ x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n $ of $ B_X $ and does not attain norm at any other extreme point of $ B_X, $ then each $ Tx_i $ is an extreme point of $ B_Y.$ We completely characterize extreme contractions between a finite-dimensional polygonal Banach space and a strictly convex Banach space. We introduce L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces and show that it has natural connections with our present study. We also prove that for any strictly convex Banach space $ X $ and any finite-dimensional polygonal Banach space $ Y, $ the pair $ (X,Y) $ does not have L-P property. Finally, we obtain a characterization of Hilbert spaces among strictly convex Banach spaces in terms of L-P property.

On the numerical index of polyhedral Banach spaces

The computation of the numerical index of a Banach space is an intriguing problem, even in case of two-dimensional real polyhedral Banach spaces. In this article we present a general method to estimate the numerical index of any finite-dimensional real polyhedral Banach space, by considering the action of only finitely many functionals, on the unit sphere of the space. We further obtain the exact numerical index of a family of $3$-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces for the first time, in order to illustrate the applicability of our method.

Approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality and smoothness in the space of bounded linear operators

We study approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality of bounded linear operators defined between normed linear spaces $\mathbb{X}$ and $\mathbb{Y}.$ As an application of the results obtained, we characterize smoothness of a bounded linear operator $T$ under the condition that $\mathbb{K}(\mathbb{X},\mathbb{Y}),$ the space of compact linear operators is an $M-$ideal in $\mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X},\mathbb{Y}),$ the space of bounded linear operators.
